Feb 23, 2009 11:21:04 Over the weekend, I bought and watched the movie, City of God. I have heard nothing but good things about this movie, and people always would say how it was such a great movie. The reviews I looked at all gave it high scores (I didn't actually read them, because I didn't want to see any spoilers). So, I figured it must be great and told my friends, "Hey City of God this weekend, it's suppose to be an amazing movie. I have no idea what it's about, but it's gonna be good."

After watching it, I have to say I was disapointed. I felt it was way too long and boring. I don't mind long movies, but there seemed to be so many parts of City of God that had no purpose at all. Like one scene where the villian visits some vodoo guy and gets a necklace that's suppose to make him invincible as long as he doesn't fornicate with it on. Sure, I'll take that, except during the whole movie it makes no reference to that scene. The movie didn't mention the necklace or vodoo guy once. What was the point? There were a lot of other scenes I would've cut if I was in charge, but I'm not gonna go into any more details about that.

There were other things I didn't like, but I think the biggest problem I had with the movie was that I felt empty during the whole thing. Sure there were a couple shocking and sad scenes, but I don't know what the movie was trying to accomplish. It wasn't some action thriller or love story. Was it about gun violence, the effect of drugs and poverty, or a combination of them all and then some? I have no idea. I have no clue as to what the movie was aiming at, and it left me bored. I couldn't even see why it was considered such a good movie and why it recieved all it's praise.

Has anyone else seen this movie, and more importantly, did you like it? If you liked it, please explain why this movie is, "good."

I agree there was little point in the voodoo scene, it was probably there either to establish the bad guy as really bad or it was something understood mostly by Brazilian people.

The point to the movie was: it sucks to live in the City of God, even though the narrator somehow managed to get by.

I was hoping for something a little deeper, but aw well. I guess my expectations going into it were too high. Perhaps I missed something with my American ignorance.

Feb 23, 2009 16:04:13 In retrospect, my OP must make it sound like this movie was terrible. It was a decent movie, it just wasn't anything mind blowing (which I thought it would be). Something it did very well was show how little value human life had in the city. The movie also did a good job at showing how terrible crime and corruption can be in some places of the world. A real eye opener.
