Class Rings?

So this is probably a bit of a weird question, but (if you got one) how long after high school did you continue to wear your class ring?

For myself, I'll be graduating with my bachelor's this December, and still wear mine1.  To be honest, I wear it everywhere... I actually freak out a little if I notice it's not on my finger2.  At this point it would feel weird to not wear it.  It's not like I have any particuarly attachment to graduating high school or think high school was a great place, it's just the ring itself that I've grown attached to.

But anyway, what about other people?  Did you wear your ring just for senior year?  A year or two after that?  Until you lost or pawned it?  Till you got a university class ring?  Did you never wear it?
________
1Being of the male persuassion, my ring is naturally one of those big bulky ones that could be used to clobber a small duck.  At it's widest point the band is probably a half-inch thick, with the stone rising a quarter inch over my finger.  Fortunately it's white gold, not the more usual gaudy yellow gold, so I like to think it doesn't look like I'm desperately trying to "bling" it out or something such as that.
2It's kinda funny, really.  My SO has seen me do it enough, the acting normal, suddenly looking at my hand and then dashing off to search for it, that he knows what I'm looking for without either of us saying anything.  Most often it's in my pant's pocket if I was washing dishes, but I still freak out a little every time I notice it's gone.

I think I was one of the few people in my high school class that actually got a class ring with a stone of the school color (blue).  The catalogue we got to order from seemed to assume everyone wanted to get their birthstone, which, oddly, seemed to be the case.  School color stone wasn't even technically an option, I had to pick the right color birthstone (not my own) to get it.

Anyway, I wore it for years.  I was strangely attached to my ring as well, and wore it all the time.

It was on a family vacation (big one, with some aunts and cousins) where we rented a house boat and roamed the Mississippi River that I lost it.  Since I always wore it, I didn't think to take it off before swimming in the river.  I'd had it slip off while swimming before, but in a pool I can easily get it back.  That doesn't work in a large river.

I told my sister I'd lost it, and she said she didn't believe me because she knew I wasn't stupid enough to have been wearing it in the river in the first place.
Again, since I always wore it, it took about 20 minutes for everyone to know it was lost, because my mother said "Hey, you're not wearing your ring!  Where is it?" as soon as she saw me.

There's still a bit of a mark from where it was like three years later, although the tan line is mostly gone.

I didn't bother getting a college class ring.

The graduating High School thing was a big deal in my family. Niether my Mom nor my Dad graduated so when it came to about that time for me my Mom made sure she had the money to get a ring for me. I wore it for about five years after high school. Now it sits in my Memory Box along with some other sentimental stuff. I don't think I'll ever get rid of it even if it didn't mean as much to me as it did my Mom.

I wore mine for a bit after HS.
I made sure that, other than the date on it, the design & stone I chose wasn't specific to high school and was something that I'd wear into the future.

I stopped wearing it because I lost some weight & it simply didn't fit anymore.
Now it resides in the bottom of a jewelry box alongside odd cufflinks, tie tacks, a favorite- but ruined - watch, etc.

I never did get a college ring.

when I was just about to graduate high school, my mom really wanted me to get a class ring. I really didn't want one and , as a joke, said I wanted a ring with all of the magic the gathering symbols around it. three weeks later my mom gave me a ring with all the magic symbols around it made of sterling silver. I graduated last year and wear it every where I go.

I never got a ring... Aside from being too poor to afford one at the time, I've got thick fingers and scarred, oversized knuckles, so it's hard to get any kind of ring that fits. Also, I just generally hate wearing jewelery on my hands, and usually wear my watch wrapped around one of my belt loops.

I was just happy to be done with that whole high school thing.  I didn't want anything to remember it by and I had no school spirit whatsoever.  So I didn't get one.  And I forget more about that place every single day.  It's not that I had a terrible time or anything like that.  Nobody made it miserable, I found it easy and didn't have to try or anything - I just didn't think much of it.  It made no difference to me.  The only thing I have from those days (aside from my diploma) are a couple of friends.  The rest?  Vanished into the nothingness it belongs in.  Oh, and reunions?  Howsabout no.

At my school, we got rings when we were Sophmores or Juniors (I can't remember which year). It definately wasn't Senior year or anything. I used to wear it until I finished high school and went to college. Now it just sit in a little obelisk on a DVD shelf in my living room.

And I wish my high school class was having a reunion. Since I'm not in Facebook, I have only to go on second hand news from friends, but it seems unlikely at this point (it would have been our 10 year). I guess I just want to see what other people are doing and compete/compare. Oh well =P

I wear my mom's class ring a lot, and we're going to be ordering ours this week. I'm a sophomore, and we get them as juniors to signify our ascent into "upperclassmenship". Mine'll probably be silver alloy with a peridot and my initials engraved in it. Our rings are done by Herff-Jones, apparently.

Oh, and my sentiments towards highschool are pretty similar to zb's.

It just means that we're upper classmen now, as opposed to underclassmen.

I got a highschool class ring. I only wear it every now and then. Being a guy, wearing a ring just seems a bit... weird, especially since I'm not married or anything (or likely to be at any point).

But that's what's great about it.  It's one of the few rings you can get away with wearing and people won't think it's odd.  Heck, I think I've only gotten many three comments about my ring in all the years I've worn it, and all three were "can I see?"

I'm still a little young for a class ring, but even so, we won't have the kinda money for that. Though my mom has already promised to buy me a lettersmen jacket when I letter in something(Band probably, maybe Academic Team if I do it next year), so I think that's pretty cool. Plus my fingers are wide from all the times I've broken/swollen them so it's rare to find a ring that fits me xD

I wasn't able to justify the price of a class ring when I was graduating from high school.  I did buy myself a cheap ring in a similar style, but I didn't wear it for more than a few months before I lost interest.   My dad wore his college class ring for decades, which was kind of why I was interested in having a class ring in the first place.

I go through ring-wearing phases, and I generally have one or two rings I prefer when I'm wearing rings, and the next time I start a ring-wearing phase, the one or two favorite rings will be different.  Right now I've got my commitment ceremony ring on one hand, and recently added my grandmother's wedding ring on the other hand.

I think it's pleasantly eye-catching to have a little bit of flash on someone's hand, male or female.  Especially a faceted stone, even if it's just glass or quartz or agate.

I got a class ring in HS, and I wore it constantly until I lost it. I didn't tell my father that I lost it because, before he agreed to buy it, he made a big deal about how much it cost and how I need to be careful with it. I found out this year, more than a decade after I lost it, that he found it on the bathroom countertop one day and put it away for safe keeping. I was relieved to find out that I hadn't actually lost it (I had taken it off to shower and forgot it by the bathroom sink). At the same time though, I couldn't help cussing out the old man in my mind. I spent the better part of a month looking for that ring (in secret) because I didn't want him to worry about it, and he never told me he found it.

Didn't have one. Thought the whole idea was incredibly stupid, thought they were ugly and massively overpriced, and I was at my last highschool for about three months and my main memories were of how massively, prickishly clique-ish the Chorus class was, especially the teacher, and how thanks to the bathroom smokers and one of the teacher's pets who was tracking that day, I spent my lunch on my 18th birthday in lunch detention because I was one. freaking. minute. late. to that class. Ugh.

(I got my vengeance on the class by just kind of casually being better than the pets. When the entire class, including people who don't like you, thinks you should have gotten a particular solo instead of the people who got it because unlike the people who actually got it you can actually DO that musical style and make the chorus class sound good to observers instead of awful... Or when me and a Teacher's Pet sang at baccalaureate and I sang a suitable piece in a style I'm comfortable in while Pet sang something semi-suitable in a style she's terrible at and I got a standing ovation and then she later got some polite clapping... )

With our rings, the "Economy Package" comes with: lifetime warranty; lost or theft coverage; school name around stone; custom school mascot; scholastic year date side; initials engraved; antique finish; choice of smooth birthstone; and polished palmside. Any differentiations are extra. Not bad, either. Only I'm either getting a gold alloy or silver alloy without the antique finish. Kinda cheaper that way.

But I might need your opinions: which looks better with peridot: silver or gold?

Silver and white gold ALWAYS looks better than yellow gold. But that's obviously just my opinion.

Yeah, I was starting to lean towards the silver myself. But to get the 10K gold and then upgrade to white gold would just be a hassle. And expensive. For the ring I want, the silver alloy costs $319 and the 10K yellow gold costs $369, plus $20 for the white gold.

I would think its worth it because you don't have to actually clean white gold like you do silver. Although I am lazy and like to waste money.

But the silver option seems pretty good. Gold's pretty overated anyway.

My ring is white gold and really, I think it looks much better then either yellow gold or silver would (yellow gold because it looks more dignified and less glitzy, silver because I don't have to clean it).  And really, what's 20 bucks?  If you have a job, that's less then a full day's work, and if you don't, go babysit for a few weeks and you'll have 20 bucks.

Certain things look better with yellow or white gold.  Peridot, being greenish, could easily work with either.  I think I'd prefer it with white because it's sort of light (lighter than emeralds - which look better in yellow).  That said, those prices made me gag.  Do you have any idea what it likely costs them to buy those?  Like, $80.  Yeah.  Maybe up to $120 or so.  Maybe.  Jewelry is ... heavily marked up.  Well, in most cases.  Not all, mind, but certainly most.  The good news?  Insurance values are pretty much always listed at a much higher number than you paid.  Of course, you need to get an estimate but that's no big deal.  Unless you get like 20 pieces done at once - like we did.  Ugh.  Expensive.  Totally worth it, though.

EDIT: Don't get platinum, though.  Very pretty, very shiny and very easy to scratch and mark up.  Unless you've got easy access to free cleaning, it's really tough to maintain.

I personally like the way the rich tones of yellow gold make the pale green peridot look cool and austere.  But you'd have to like yellow gold in the first place to enjoy that.

I'd be hard-pressed to justify paying an extra $70 to go from silver to white gold -- but I'd be disinclined to pay over $300 for a ring, so the scale I'm looking at is different in the first place.  And on top of that, I *like* the way silver tarnishes.  The last silver ring I wore, the tarnish settled into the low spots & the higher spots stayed shiny, and I thought that effect was lovely.

That said, the two rings I wear every day right now are both gold.  One's white gold with a rose gold stripe, the other's yellow gold. Both are 14k.

That sounds like something you should wear all the time.  Or not bother with, I can totally see not bothering with that kind of symbol and spending the money on something more practical.
But I can't imagine having one and not wearing it.

Not that it's any of my business what you do, anyway.  Just seems a bit odd.

With our rings, the "Economy Package" comes with: lifetime warranty; lost or theft coverage;

Y'know, seems my ring came with something like that.  I should probably look into that, see if I can get it replaced.  If so, I'll probably start wearing it again.

Silver, I think.  What're your school colors?

Our school colors are green and gold. But I look better with silver jewelry anyways, since I'm kinda pale...:P Thanks though.

And the cost is paid over six months with a $50 down, no matter what ring you get. To get the ring in white gold would actually probably cost the same as the 10K yellow if I order in school, but I'd still have to pay an extra $20 for a gold-on-gold finish as opposed to antique. But yea, I'm gonna go with the silver.

I also lost my wedding ring about 2 weeks after getting married.  Which is why we bought a $20 ring for the ceremony and also why I got this sweet tattoo!

Got one... work it all of ten minutes before I found out that it definitely triggered a metal allergy and made my hands swell up quite a bit.  Never wore a wedding ring because of that, though recently I've found that titanium doesn't trigger a reaction, so I just got a wedding band I can actually wear, after 19 years of marriage, a couple of months ago.

Reached a decision on the ring. Century style, antiqued silver with an imperial cut peridot. Final cost was $385 without tax/S&H. I can't wait till October now.
