Well as a huge Star Wars fan, I finally watched a couple of the Clone War CGI cartoons the other day. I have to say that it is definatly made for kids, and that's a good thing. I saw the two parter cartoon of the battle on the Twilek people's planet. If I had a little rascal, I would happily bounce him/her on my knee and watch the show.

However, I am not a child (contrary to popular belief), and personally did not like what I saw. Some of you might be wondering why I'm about to cry and moan about a KID'S show after admitting it was a good show for kids. Well, there are a couple of reasons. First, I'm bored. Second, I have the Dark Horse comics of the Clone Wars (which are really great comics) and I think the awesome and dark stories in the comic have been rubbed out for the cheesy and mild cartoon. Third, I've been wanting to have a conversation about this for awhile, but I moved away from my friends who are my equals at being Star Wars nerds. Fourth, I'm really bored.

While watching the cartoon, the thing that irked me the most, was how the CIS droids were a joke. I mean they seriously were a joke. I thought they were machines meant for KILLING, but no, I'm wrong. I guess the CIS hope the clones laugh themselves to death after seeing the stupid antics of the droids. The droids complain, crack little jokes, and get scared. In the comics, I don't recall the droids saying anything, only speaking to acknowledge orders. They would glady line up and march contently to their doom. In the comics, the droids actually acted like droids. I know C3PO is a droid that does the same thing, but he is not a war machine. He isn't suppose to kill things.

I will continue and add more to this later, as it seems I have some work to do...

OK, time to continue...

Another thing I didn't like was how the clones are now given different personalities. In the comics, the clones themselves actually acted like the way the droids should've acted. They only spoke when spoken to, they were never worried or concerned about preserving life, and they followed orders without question. Their only personality was to follow orders. Only the ARC Troopers had personalities (usually cruel and sarcastic), but they still had fanatical dedication to following orders. In the episodes of the CGI cartoon I saw, two clones went off on their own to scout ahead. During this they were talking, getting distracted, and eventually followed a little Twilek girl around. The comic clones wouldn't have been talking while on a mission, especially a scouting mission. And, the comic clones would probably just ignore and civillians they came across, since the civillians would've just been a burden. That's how I like to see the clones, cold and completly focused on the mission.

Now I can understand how some people like the clones in the cartoon better. The cartoon humanises the clones, makes them seem more like regular people. You can relate more to the cartoon clones, I get it. I would be able to accept this, but in the movie, Episode II, the creatures who made the clone army mentioned how the clones minds are modified to make them passive or something (it's been awhile since I've seen the movie, but I know he mentioned something about the clones thought process being changed). Therefore, I feel the comic clones were an accurate portrayal, but the cartoon has just crapped on that idea.

More to come...

OK, I have to ask which Clone Wars cartoons you are watching. The new, CGI one, or the older, classically animated one?

Either way, I like them. :P

But the newer one has had some pretty dark moments in it - I was surprised at seeing some of the things on a "kids show".

To be honest, though, I'm a crazy SW person and I think it's a great take on the universe.

I think the droids are good comic relief; they amuse me. In the movies, they were comic relief too, so it's true to the portrayal. It's nothing new that the battle droids are idiots.

Besides, it's mostly the battle droids. There was an episode with ninja droids that was awesome, and the super battle droids seem to be more of the "killing machine" you're looking for.

I meant the CGI ones. I probably should've mentioned that, whoops...

Yes I suppose you're right about the movies portraying the droids as goofy, but I only remember them acting that way in Episode III. I think the makers stupified the droids for that movie, because they were making plans for the CG cartoons and wanted, "funny," droids. I havn't seen Episode I in a long long time, but I don't recall the droids doing anything funny.

Now also, in the cartoons, where did this Anikin's apprentice come from, what's her name Ashoka or something? The idea of Anakin having an apprentice at the begining of the Clone Wars just baffles my mind. It came completely out of left field. I know Anakin is the most powerful Jedi ever and what not, but he didn't become a Jedi Knight until later in the Clone Wars. How does he get an apprentice when he isn't even a Jedi Knight yet (assuming the cartoon starts at the begining of the Clone Wars)? Or is he already a Knight in the cartoon? I don't know, but that just goes to show how the cartoon is messing up the story elements and cannon material of the comics.

Now something I find rather interesting about Ashoka, whatever her name is (Anakins apprentice) was the way she holds her lightsaber. She holds it using a reversed grip. I find that interesting, because later when Darth Vader is training Starkiller, Vader's secret apprentice, Starkiller uses his lightsaber with a reversed grip. I'm guessing Ashoka is going to die at some point in the end of the cartoon, and perhaps Vader trains Starkiller to resemble Ashoka. Hmmmmm.... that seems almost too clever for Star Wars though...

Anywho, I only saw a couple of the cartoons, so these are just the things that bother me at the moment. Also, the fact that the story in the comics I adore so much are now partially (maybe completely) obsolete upsets me.

The Clone Wars cartoons are based off of the Clone Wars movie, released last year. In the movie, Asoka is assigned to Anakin as an apprentice. It is sort of left-field, but in a time of war, they seem to be pushing out apprentices (I would imagine they have a shortage). Yoda assigns Asoka to Anakin.

Okay, I knew the movie was the first couple of episodes, but does the cartoon begin at the begining of the war? If Anakin is already a Jedi Knight I could see them giving him an apprentice, but if not, he is still technically a Padawan. I have a hard time buying that they would give a Padawan, no matter how powerful, an apprentice.

He no longer has the braid, so I think it's safe to say he's a knight.

IIRC, Anakin was made a knight at the end of Ep II. I believe the Clone Wars is set in between II and III.

And no, the movie was not the first couple of episodes. It was a full-length feature film released in theatres.

Really? It's been years since I saw the movie, and I probably blocked most of it from my memory. What did the droids do that was so funny?

Okay, so he must be a Knight. I can accept the apprentice idea. Thanks for clarifying.

Every one of there lines was goofy in one way or another. A lot of said goofiness came when the were being killed. You should maybe see about seeing it again so that you can see how the droids were.

I remember the droids saying Roger Roger, but that's about it. I'll just take your word for it. I'm not sure if I could stand watching the movie again. It seems the comics spoiled me.

I don't know what everyone's beef is with the new movies. As far as I'm concerned they are just as bad as the old ones. *shrug* *shakes head*

Yes, the Clone Wars begin at the end of II, and the war ends during III. You never see Anakin become a Knight in Ep. II. You see him being knighted in those cool little cartoons they made.

The Clone Wars take place between II and III. At the end of III I still don't think Anakin had become a knight. I think he was just a Padawan with extra privileges by the end of III.

He was a knight by then. If you ever saw those short cartoons, you see Anakin being knighted. Also, those cartoons end right at the begining of Ep. III.

I never saw the cartoons or the CGI. I do believe that he still called Obi-Wan "Master" in III. I can't remember because it's been a while.

That is more out of respect, than anything else. Anakin is a knight by ep. III.

EDIT: Obi-Wan is a Jedi Master by that point, so it may be for that reason, as well.

Obi Wan is a Jedi Master, calling him master would be appropriate. An example would be Master Yoda. Also for Anakin, calling Obi Wan master was a little affectionate thing he never stopped doing.

Okay, last night I watched the season finally of the cg cartoon, and well... I liked it.... That's right, I enjoyed it. Sure, it had a couple stupid stuff in it, but this episode entertained me.

First of all, I was very pleased to see droids that weren't retarded. If you read my earlier posts, you would see how the droids disgust me. Well, interestingly I read up on the Clone Wars fluff, and the B1 droids (the skinny stupid ones) are supposed to be stupid. You see, after the embarrasing defeat of the Trade Federation's droid army on Naboo (in Episode 1), the B1 droids were modified to operate without a command station (the command ship that Anakin blew up by accident...). The modification allowed the B1 droids to opperate on their own and gave them personality. This is why the B1 droids in the cartoon are always complaining and talking. They are cheaply massed produced and were meant to overwhelm enemies with sheer numbers, this is why they were so ineffective in combat. The average kill ratio of Clones to B1 droids was 1:50 in the first year of the Clone War. So, this is why the droids suck so much. It turns out Grievous hated the B1 models, due to their flaws.

Now, the reason the droids in this episode weren't so stupid is because they were IG-86 models. The IG86s were far more expensive, but had much better intelligence and well, better everything. I think part of the reason I enjoyed this so much, is because it used the IG86s and I am a huge fan of IG88. I was smiling on the inside as I was an IG86 beat up Anakin.

Another nice thing about this episode was Cad Bane. I originally thought he was going to be a waste of a bounty hunter character (a big fan of Durge myself), but he was actually pretty cool. Perhaps I will write more if I watch more episodes.

DISCUSS THIS WITH ME!!

:P See. Told ya.

Some of the episodes are silly, but some are really cool.

I highly recommend watching the one with the outpost. I don't remember the title, but it's one of the earlier ones. It features only clones and some super ninja-bots. It's a really good episodes.

It stands for Inter Galactic, since the Inter Galactic Banking Clan provided the loans for the original designs.
