| #1deviknyteAug 04, 2008 11:11:22 | I'm a geek with 200% of my being (including my pee-pee). And with all the 4th and 3rd edition avengering and dooming it reminds me how traditional geeks cross over into most of the genres. Like the first video game or anime they watch is just a gateway which will eventually lead them down the path of multiple passions for multiple beautifuls worlds of sci-fi, fantasy and utter fanboydom. It even lead me to High Fidelitying my way into working at a comic book store and I'd do it full time if it weren't for bills. But my huge pull isn't helping that. But anyway what comics do you guys like? My favorite is are usually teen/kid oriented. My favorite series being The Runaways. Favorite character is Layla Miller followed by Iron Fist and Captian America. Marvel- Runaways, Young Avengers, Iron Fist, NYX, Anything Avengers, She-Hulk, Captian America Marvel Finished- House of M, Disassembled, NYX Vol. 1, Young Avengers Vol. 1 DC- Legion of Super-Heroes, Teen Titans, Anything (Green) Lantern, Robin, Grant Morrison's Batman, Dini's Detective Comics DC Finished- Identity Crisis Other- Kick-Ass, Fables, Jack of Fables, Echo Finished Others- The Watchmen, Wanted Favorite Writer- Bendis than Brubraker Favorite Artist- Micheal Turner, may he be making variant covers in the sky. |
| #2batshidoAug 04, 2008 11:33:34 | I'm mostly a Bat guy, though I've got a soft spot for anything by Gaiman or Moore as well. Outsiders, Birds of Prey, Nightwing, Robin, Batgirl, etc. I mostly stick to Gothamites in the DCU. Marvel U is a little more wide open. Captain America was always my number one guy. Cyke is a close second (almost called him "number 2," dodged a quoted bullet there ;) ), especially when Whedon was writing him. |
| #3deviknyteAug 04, 2008 11:37:47 | I love Moore! The Watchmen is a must have read for any comic book geek and anyone going to see the movie should read it first. Gaiman I actually can't say I've read a thing of his and although I love Whedon shows and movies. He can't get a book out on time and ruined the Runaways and ruined Astonishing's continuity. |
| #4AndronAug 04, 2008 11:39:57 | What I am reading right now: DC: Fables, Jack of Fables, Northlanders, House of Mystery, JLA, JSA, LSH, Flash, and supposedly the last on the Crisis series, Final Crisis. Marvel: Thor, the Twelve Dynamite entertainment: Project Superpowers Boom Studios: Fall of Cthulhu Out of all these the best is Fables. Of the superhero book JSA and Thor are the best. I really like the Vertigo titles overall even from before the titles were collected under that moniker. All my favorite writers are mostly from the British invasion of the 80's and 90's- Morrison, Gaiman, Milligan- okay he's Irish, Robinson, Ennis- another Irish writer, and of course Bill Willngham- an American. There are more but these are the big ones for me. My favorite artist of all time is Dave Mckean. For the regular super stuff I like Arthur Adams and Alex Ross. There are others but those are the top 2 I could think of quickly. The funniest thing is watching Marvel trying to make the Marvel Zombie put down a positive thing with the horrendous comic they are putting out. I like Dr Strange, but marvel doesn't do much with him. I always feel like I should like the X titles, but I just can't get into them, along with most of the Marvel titles. I do like Spider-man, but not enough to buy the monthly books. I am thinking about joining the Marvel's Digital Comics, but I am not too sure yet. Overall I like DC the best. |
| #5batshidoAug 04, 2008 11:44:08 | I love Moore! The Watchmen is a must have read for any comic book geek and anyone going to see the movie should read it first. I'm going to pick up another copy (my first was lost in a move) for my wife to read before it hits the theatres. It's a great story. Gaiman I actually can't say I've read a thing of his He's worth reading, for sure. He uses the same tropes over and over again, but his stories are incredible. Take a look at the Sandman collecteds to get an idea of his style, or the Eternals thing he did with Romita. Good stuff. and although I love Whedon shows and movies. He can't get a book out on time and ruined the Runaways and ruined Astonishing's continuity.[/FONT] I've gotten to where I only read trades anyway, so Whedon's four book run on astonishing didn't phase my sense of continuity any. If you like his work on TV, you should check out Fray, the book set in the future of the buffyverse. It's quality and it's all out in a collected now. Whedon is the only reason I have ever liked Wolverine as a character. The man has real life superpowers. |
| #6batshidoAug 04, 2008 11:45:40 | Out of all these the best is Fables. I was chopping through the Fables collecteds pretty quickly, but I lost track of where I was and gave up. Same with Walking Dead and several other ongoing books. I should really pick those back up. |
| #7skullport_denizenAug 04, 2008 12:45:51 | I am a total Marvel guy myself. Basically I like team books. Marvel: Anything X-men, Avengers, I like the Runaways and catch some of the other books time to time. Thor, Cap, Thunderbolts, etc. I also like the Stephen King series come to comic form. Novels into comic form is as great as TV on dvd. I have the old Y: the Last Man, Fables, and Watchers stuff on order. Starting from the beginning from those. DC: I used to read Teen Titans, JLA, some Batman/Superman, and Legion of Super Heroes. DC has become too mixed up for me right now. I stopped reading when the 52 series started. Favorite artists: Jim Lee, Mark Sylvestri, Michael Turner, Ian Churchill Some of the best stuff is X-men Legion Lost and Age of Apocalypse. Characters: Iceman, Cyclops, Beast, Deadpool, and others. |
| #8BloodsoulAug 04, 2008 13:33:57 | Strangers In Paradise Echo Bone Queen & Country V for Vendetta Batman: Year One Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Sin City Johnny the Homicidal Maniac Lenore the Cute Little Dead Girl Emily the Strange Neurotically Yours Death Note Earl Cain Saga/Godchild Hikaru no Go Nana Fist of the Blue Sky (haven't had a chance to read North Star, yet) Dragonball Baki the Grappler Slam Dunk Absolute Boyfriend Excel Saga ...eh, that's all that's coming to mind right now, less I start naming off webcomics. |
| #9ADHadhAug 04, 2008 13:35:34 | There once was a publisher of American comics with relatively low prices. It didn't last long, but I've managed to get my hands on some Ultimate X-Men and Spectacular Spider-man. I must say Humberto Ramos is probably my favourite comic artist. I've also got myself into Robert Kirkman's Walking Dead, but I couldn't get past the third volume. Charlie Adlards style sucks compared to that of Tony Moore and the story didn't look that interesting. I also collect Naruto manga regularly. Nothing much else really, I still miss the above mentioned publisher (others publish mostly European comics which I don't really like or are rather expensive). |
| #10The_White_SorcererAug 04, 2008 14:13:19 | I read the Marvel crossovers (because I like epics) and Incredible Hercules (mostly because of Amadeus Cho). I also like some Vertigo stuff (Sandman and Books of Magic were both great). Also Freshmen. |
| #11deviknyteAug 05, 2008 0:04:31 | I love reading the indie titles cause they're just a refreshing change of pace from the well established worlds of Marvel and DC. I read all the big cross overs (Marvel and DC) although they usually anger me for one reason or another. Secret Invasion's Avengers tie-ins are way better than the main title. Batman R.I.P and Final Crisis require wikiepedia to read due to Grant Morrison's love of digging things out of the archives. I stay away from DC and Marvel alternate realizes and futures (except the Legion of Super-Heroes). |
| #12AndronAug 05, 2008 10:03:28 | well, I keep trying to make a list of favorite comics, graphic novels, and TPB but there are just so many that I really enjoyed over the years. If I just stick to the ones that have just stuck with me I guess it would be: Sandman- Gaiman, V for Vendetta, Watchmen, Camelot 3000, Bratpack, Doom Patrol- Morrison, Animalman- Morrison, Shade the changing Man, Fables, Daredevil- the Miller years, the Killing Joke, Cerebus, Baker Street, Mister X, the Tick, Justice League- the Giffen years, especially the Batman one punch of Guy Gardner (which they tried to get even with in GL Rebirth but it didn't work as well.) That's all I can think of right now. |
| #13deviknyteAug 06, 2008 15:16:21 | Final Crisis was finally good today! ((Pun!)) HOORAY!! Plus the return of NYX. |
| #14Mournblade94Aug 06, 2008 15:30:23 | I love reading the indie titles cause they're just a refreshing change of pace from the well established worlds of Marvel and DC. Batman R.I.P and Final Crisis require wikiepedia to read due to Grant Morrison's love of digging things out of the archives. I stay away from DC and Marvel alternate realizes and futures (except the Legion of Super-Heroes). I agree on the Tie ins for Invasion being better than the Main title. I have always been a THOR and AVENGERS reader. I don't read ultimates, but I read everything else marvel puts out except the NEW WARRIORS. THOR is my all time favourite and then I cannot decide between SILVER SURFER, CAPTAIN AMERICA, Or IRON MAN for second, though Ms. MARVEL has recently worked her way in. ADRIANA MELO is the best artist I have seen yet. I wish she woould draw more titles. The only DC book I read is GREEN LANTERN, but I read a couple of independents. |
| #15hanzo187Aug 06, 2008 17:14:25 | I was wondering when this topic would show up. Personally, if it's anything by Moore or Miller, I'll read it, though I haven't read them all. I'm still trying to find Sin City's Hell and Back, and I'd like to read Watchmen before seeing it. As for Marvel/DC, I'm 97% Marvel (the rest goes to Batman). I've read ASM (though not since One More Day), X-Men (vol. 2), Uncanny X-Men, some Thor, Elektra: The Hand, anything Wolverine, and pretty much anything by Jim Lee and/or Chris Claremont. I still have the first three issues of WildCATS. I also read Dr. McNinja. I'm also really into manga. Death Note was terrific, and Naruto and Bleach aren't too bad right now, either. I'd like to read NANA, but I help but get the feeling someone's gonna come from behind and say, "What're you doing with something that's for girls?" I'll work that out, someday. And bloodsoul, how dare you forget Rurouni Kenshin!!! |
| #16BloodsoulAug 06, 2008 19:50:56 | I didn't mention Kenshin 'cause I haven't read a whole lot (outside of bits and pieces in Shônen Jump), and I don't remember the anime too well anymore. I'll have to borrow some from my girlfriend, it seems. :D |
| #17NivedAug 06, 2008 20:12:23 | I've been a DC boy since Marvel chased me away in the mid 90s with Onslaught and Heroes Reborn... though I do like Deadpool, and read Cable & Deadpool till it was canceled. My pull list is currently Green Lantern, Green Lantern Corps, Booster Gold, and Blue Beetle. I've been picking up the Batgirl, Trinity (so much better than Countdown, and has Fabian Niciea from Cable & Deadpool scripting), also been picking up Nightwing since Tomasai has been writing, might add it to my pull list. |
| #18doomsoughtAug 06, 2008 22:20:11 | I also read Dr. McNinja. I am not alone, Now, for the links. Belfry web comic index: lots of web comics with nice warnings, about half of those I read are on here. I'll have to borrow some from my girlfriend, it seems. :D The manga itself is awesome, but I found vols. 18-28 (the Jinchuu arc) to be beyond incredible. I am not alone, Glad to be of help. I really should get back into Hellsing, myself. |
| #20deviknyteAug 14, 2008 23:20:08 | Secret Invasion came out this week along with 5 tie-in. Marvel's killing me. But Secret Invasion is finally picking up the pace but I hating founding who on the ship wasn't a skrull. Action Comics' Brainiac arc is great. While Morrison isn't WOW!ing me enough to get caught up on Batman R.I.P. GLCorp was great as usual. Halo Uprising #3 actually came out. DC and Marvel are disappointing on the line the big events. DC cause Morrison's Final Crisis disjointed. And in both RIP and Crisis he's using his crazy ability to have every DC comic memorized and is pulling crazy stuff out of his arse. Tip: Anything Grant Morrison has writen should be read in front of a computer with Wikipedia up. And Marvel cause all the good stuff is in the New and Mighty Avengers. Secret Invasion is dropping the ball on tons of great ideas that every Marvel fan is thinking and wants. Screaming, "OH Come on! Not a single of them!" |
| #21Alter_BoyAug 14, 2008 23:46:52 | Great marvel reads: Civil War, World War Hulk, Secret Invasion. Terrible Marvel reads: Avenger Disassembled, Messiah CompleX, One More Day Despite being a Marvel fanboy, I am enjoying "The Long Halloween" and "Dark Victory". It is amazing how great Loeb's work is in these books, and how abysmal his Wolverine and Hulk runs were... |
| #22deviknyteAug 14, 2008 23:52:39 | I think you've got your terrible Marvel reads and great ones mixed up buddy. Only some of Civil War was good. The middle issues nothing happened and the end led to Initiative one of the biggest plot holes done in the name of political opinion. World War Hulk sucked cause nothing happened period. We all knew going in he couldn't and wasn't kill any of the Illuminati members. Hulks suppose to be a good guy, plus the Illum were too important at the time to be offed. And Secret Invasion sucks beyond issue 2. Read the Secret Invasion New Avengers, Mighty Avengers and Incredible Herc. That's good stuff. One More Day was garbage and Joe Quesada should die for it. Avenger Disassembled ruled! It's one of the greatest Marvel reads. Messiah Complex is hopefully leading up to something good. But it's an X-Man event. The only time they've effected the rest of the Marvel U was in House of M. Which was good, but unfortunately lead to the 198. |
| #23ArtifactAug 15, 2008 0:40:11 | Of all the comics I've read in my lifetime, I'm longest a reader of Amazing Spider-Man (steadily since the late 70's), although I lost track of the series in the mid-90's (amidst the Clone Saga). Straczynski's run was amazing but I again lost interest with One More Day. I'm hoping to jump back in with Brand New Day (soon). I just had to buy the 40th anniversary collection (500 issues) on CD ;). May do that with other series. I read a ton of comics in the early to mid-80s. My all-time favorite was New Teen Titans (Wolfman and Perez). For my steady reading, I mostly stuck with the staples for DC and Marvel: Superman, Batman, JLA, and Fantasic Four (Byrne's run). I also read Star Wars and Conan the Barbarian and Savage Sword of Conan steadily. I have 'em in trade paperback collection now ;). Some series I didn't get into until later. I didn't pick up on Claremont's X-Men until years later (via the Essential series, of all things ;)). Simonson's Beta Ray Bill saga (in Thor) is another recently discovered favorite. In the 90's I enjoyed the Ultraverse titles (specifically Mantra and Sludge), and jumped on early with Spawn but left just as quickly. I just recently got the massive Spawn trade paperback collection (currently on vol. 5). Speaking of trades, that how I do most of my collecting now days, rather than monthly newstand purchases. I love MAX Punisher (by Garth Ennis), and Daredvil (by Bendis). I've been following Ultimate Spider-Man since Book I. I can't seem to get into Immonen, preferring Bagley's style better; I've recently dropped the series. I've caught a few other Ultimate titles but just in passing. Teen Titans and Outsiders have been fun but I haven't bought the more recent books. I'm still waiting for the return of Trigon. I've ignored the massive events like Infinite Crisis and Civil War. I grew up during the original Crisis on Infinite Earths and Secret Wars; the new stuff just doesn't appeal to me though. I did finally skim over Infinite Crisis but wasn't too impressed. Before I go, wanna a recommendation for an oustanding comic series? BONE (by Jeff Smith). Check it out, you won't be disappointed ;). |
| #24deviknyteAug 20, 2008 12:51:28 | FINAL CRISIS LEGION OF THREE WORLDS came out this week. AMAZING if you like legion style stories. AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is suppose to be good this week and a good starting point for anyone trying to wash Brand New Day stains off their hands. I haven't read it yet but give it a try. INCREDIBLE HERCULES was great. This title only gets better now that the hulk is out of it and Planet Hulk rocked. IRON FIST ORIGIN OF DANNY RAND, good (Iron Fist Fan). In the X part of the Marvel Universe lies UNCANNY X-MEN 501 and X-FACTOR SPECIAL LAYLA MILLER. Both awesome. Plus Layla's okay! Hurray! Will Kick-Ass ever come in? But I digress on the lost world of many late books. Bonus! Store got in tees that say, "Your not the DM of me" |
| #251_ton_ghostAug 20, 2008 13:15:59 | Achaia Studio Press: Okko (fantasy oriental, bloody), The Killer (french as well, very intelligent/realistic). Image: The Walking Dead (very good human drama study, very realistic, trades 1-3 are the best) Devil's Due Publishing: Legend of Drizzt ("Homeland" particularly was excellent, good for you fanboys), Hack/Slash (goth chick & buddy hunt serial killers, pretty good, satirical sometimes). DC/Vertigo: DMZ (21st cen American Civil War, realistic, good study of current events), Fables (excellent, endless possibilities/material). Moore is brilliant. Incredible storywriter. From Hell, V, Watchmen, doesn't matter, everything he touches is gold. He doesn't 1/2 ass anything either. He's really pi$$ed about the Watchmen film though. |
| #26lachlanceallachAug 21, 2008 3:30:18 | Watchmen From Hell V For Vendetta The Crow Ultimate Spider-Man Spider-Man: Blue 1602 Powers Invincible Superman For All Seasons Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Batman: The Long Halloween Batman: The Killing Joke Trinity (Matt Wagner) Rising Stars All excellent books in my opinion. |
| #27werralAug 21, 2008 17:19:16 | [b]A Yep - read his Swampthing too. Also Neil Gaiman (who's been mentioned), Sandman is a must read. His novel, "American Gods" where old gods like Odin and various world mythologies battle against new gods like Television, Cars and Internet Also Transmetropolitan (a Sci Fi satire about a kind off HUnter S Thompson style journalist). The first episode sucks, but trust me it gets much much better. The Presidential election story is great. Also Preacher (though sometimes it just becomes a gross out fest and loses my interest). but there are some great episodes. There's an Italian comic called Dago (not the racist insult, it's a play on words, "daga" is Italian for daga and it's feminine, so a male daga would be "dago") by Robin Wood. He's this Venetian renegade/mercenary who fights on pretty much every side in 16th Century Europe - defending what he thinks is right. Sometimes he fights for the Turks against Christians, sometimes with Christian's against the Turks, sometimes for Catholics against Protestants (defending Rome during the sack of Rome in 1527 and sometimes Protestantss against Catholics (saving Dutch villages from French massacres). It's all set against a sweeping and unrelentingly grim historical backdrop, has moments of corniness but is really really worth reading. Also Persepolis, a great comic and a great book about Iran (it's an autobiography of an Iranian girl growing up around the time of the 1979 Revolution) |
| #28great_cthuhlozAug 22, 2008 1:51:01 | I get WAY too Much currently X-men (all incarnatiobs) X-factor Ultimate-FF Thor more or less all the Secret Invasion tie-ins Squadron Supreme (which is due to be cut from my list, i'm bored of it) Final Crisis Trinity Supergirl (also due to be cut - HOW many ret-cons can they give her!) Wonder woman Powers As an asside, from this weeks comics The Layla Miller one-off - VERY good, loved Ruby and, from another comic, does everyone agree with me over the Red Queen's identity? (to avoid spoilers, everyone who has read THAT comic will know what i mean, and everyone who hasn't won't have a clue! |
| #29AndronAug 22, 2008 11:25:55 | The Crow I can't believe I forgot that one. I also really liked Mage. |
| #30lachlanceallachAug 22, 2008 11:34:34 | I'll add "Justice League: New Frontier" as well. I promised myself I wouldn't watch the Bruce Timm version until after I read Darwyn Cook's. Having seen one and read the other, both are quite excellent! Any really good Flash stories out there? |
| #31lugnut71Aug 22, 2008 12:52:27 | Lets see I read a lot of comic books. The Moonknight revamp started out good then become average, then become good again and now I think they stopped it again. As far as favorites go. #1 is Superman #2 Hal Jordan (Sinestro Wars is great) #3 Runaways #4 Dust After that it gets kind of blurry depending on how the story is going. Personally I prefer DC over Marvel. I've liked everything I've read by Brian Vaughn. Gaiman is always good too. Mark Millar I like but it always seems like he is trying to hard to be dark to me. Ennis is awesome but Wanted tries to be too over the top that it is jarring to me. |
| #32AndronAug 23, 2008 11:55:32 | Any really good Flash stories out there? Well, there is a Crisis going on, so something interesting will happen with a Flash at the center. I think they are bringing back Barry Allen, that is just a guess. I haven't read Final Crisis yet because I am waiting for the whole thing to come out first so no one spoil it for me... But the run with Bart Allen, after Wally and family just disappeared, as the Flash was pretty good, especially towards the end. Then there was Salvation Run, which dealt with the rogues gallery and after that there was Flash: Rogue's Revenge that was pretty good. The current story is okay, but it has been better. I always enjoy the Flash's in JLA and JSA. All the Flash's have been one of my favorite characters. |
| #33hanzo187Aug 23, 2008 15:21:51 | I'm glad you agree with me on OMD, devilknyte. I was such a wretched retcon, and the way they covered Pete's identity was probably the most half-assed thing I've ever seen. "Ooh, everyone just...forgot." Yeah, very impressive. The least Marvel could've done with that part was tie it into Secret Invasion. You know, the Spidey who unmasked was actually a Skrull who got killed by Crossbones or something (kind of like what happened to Cap). It definitely beats the "World's Laziest Retcon". For some reason, I'm a little curious as to what people though of the Amalgam universe. It didn't last long (for obvious reasons), but I didn't think it was that bad. |
| #34viktor_von_doomAug 23, 2008 16:03:17 | All Star Superman Runaways The Sandman Watchmen Superman: Red Son Kingdom Come Green Lantern: Emerald Dawn Green Lantern: Emeral Rebirth Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps War Ultimate Spiderman Ultimates Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 Thor (The Current run) Immortal Iron Fist Scott Pilgrim Flash |
| #35nichomacheanAug 23, 2008 16:23:44 | I have never been able to get into comics. Mostly because they require such a time investment, and the aesthetics don't usually appeal to me. |
| #36ArtifactAug 23, 2008 16:33:14 | What kind of stories do you enjoy the most? Maybe we can offer some suggestions for good places to start (if you're interested ;)). There are all kinds of different stuff, not just super-heroes or kids stories (as might be expected). |
| #37nichomacheanAug 23, 2008 16:39:26 | What kind of stories do you enjoy the most? Maybe we can offer some suggestions for good places to start (if you're interested ;)). There are all kinds of different stuff, not just super-heroes or kids stories (as might be expected). I don't know. My favorite books are Dune, The Godfather, Starship Troopers, Brave New World, Lord of the Rings, and Ender's Game. My favorite movies are Man on Fire, The Hunted, Pirates of the Carribean (all three), Raging Bull, Goodfellas, The Professional, The Fifth Element, Resevoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. |
| #38werralAug 23, 2008 16:47:19 | Yeah for example you could try: Nichomachean - how about: Poison River (South American politics and women with huge breasts) Persepolis (an autobiography of an Iranian girl living through the revolution) Palestine (A journalist's experience in guess where) My Cancer Year (a true account of the writer's experience of cancer) Ghost World (two high school girls graduate and don't know what to do with themselves - there was a film) Manara (Italian porn comic with invisible men, historical periods, Greek myths and biblical stories) Jiro Ichi's The Man who Walks ( Japanese guy who goes for walks - it's actually surprising how pleasant it is to read) None of them are superheros and all have widely different aesthetics. It's a medium not a genre. |
| #39viktor_von_doomAug 23, 2008 16:47:19 | You might wanna look into Ex Machina and Powers Nichomachean. All so Pride of Bagdag. |
| #40deviknyteAug 23, 2008 18:53:06 | Nichomachean. If you like superheroes any of the reads we suggested are good starts. If capes and cowls aren't your thing "independent" comics are the way to go. Neil Gaiman's Sandman is good. Y the Last Man, Walking Dead, 100 Bullets, V for Vendetta. As per cost go for trade paper backs. You can always get good deals on them through Amazon or a major book store. Those places are sadly killing comic shops like the one I work at. FYI everyone. A Flash will not die in this Crisis. A Flash died in between the last crisis and this one. So DC is giving them a day off and actually just gave us Barry Allen back in Final Crisis #2 Yes. I thought that the Wanted comic was too over the top. Plus it's message was scattered all over the place with some of the things the Killer said and did. Hanzo187. The retcon was more about getting the Marvel U public to not know who Spidy is and mostly about breaking him and MJ up. Spider-man has always been the down to luck character and taking MJ and his unborn daughter away was just them kicking him in the nuts again to keep him relate able. The goverment and SHIELD still knows, as does half his villians. Read this weeks Amazing if you get the chance. Vemon is on the Thunderbolts. |
| #41squarecircleAug 23, 2008 19:10:34 | Some of my favorites are The Punisher, sometimes Batman, and for those who know what it is, Transmetropolitan. The Preacher was also pretty cool. |
| #42squarecircleAug 23, 2008 19:12:53 | I have never been able to get into comics. Mostly because they require such a time investment, and the aesthetics don't usually appeal to me. My wife is the same way. When handed a comic book, she just doesn't "get it" and can't get into it. Which actually frustrates HER, because ironically, she absolutely LOVES comic-book styled movies (Sin City, Kill Bill, The Dark Knight, Iron Man, etc). |
| #43AndronAug 24, 2008 7:44:38 | My wife is the same way. When handed a comic book, she just doesn't "get it" and can't get into it. Same with me for the most part. She does like Sandman and the Crow. I think if I could get her to look at it, she would absolutely love Fables since she liked a book called Aria from Image. But other than that, she really doesn't like them, especially the superhero comics though she thinks the movies are okay. My wife loved the movies From Hell, V for Vendetta, the Crow- the first one, some bits of the second, and the rest we pretend never came out- and a few of the anime like Howl's Moving castle, Princess Mononoke, and a lot of others. She actually likes the anime better, but she doesn't like the manga at all. I think her favorite anime is Witch Hunter Robin and Wolf's Rain- same with me along with FLCL. |
| #44viktor_von_doomAug 24, 2008 14:49:06 | I think her favorite anime is Witch Hunter Robin and Wolf's Rain- same with me along with FLCL. Then you and your wife got great taste. |

I actually really liked the 3rd Crow movie, even more than the 2nd (which I really didn't like at all, actually). Of course, YMMV. My wife also absolutely loves V for Vendetta, and 300 as well. But with comic books, it's not that she doesn't like them, but that she actually gets confused when she tries to read one, and doesn't even bother attempting any more. Trying to figure out the order of the word bubbles and the panels is something she doesn't like. She also likes LotR and things of that nature. I really think her inner-nerd is far geekier than mine, as I don't really get any more enjoyment from "nerdy" movies as I do from "traditional" action movies and the like, for example Die Hard, Rocky, Rambo, etc. |

I was dating my wife when the Crow first came out. I had no idea how much she got into it though until the second one came along. I had to laugh out loud when she ranted (yes, ranted ;)) that they had made the second one about nothing but "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" :D. Said the guy was a Brandon Lee "knock off". I've tried a few times to get her to read the original comic (which I enjoy more than the movie) but no go. Wasn't the third movie the one with Kristen Dunst (released straight to video didn't it)? |
| #47deviknyteAug 31, 2008 8:24:12 | OMG!! This weeks comics were sooo many and sooo good!!! First off, DC Universe Last Will And Testament #1!! Read this!! Like the JLA or JSA? Read this! Like the Titans or Teen Titans? Read this! Like DC? Read this! Like Slade Wilson, aka Deathstroke the Terminator? READ THIS! Just plain like comics? READ THIS! I hate the new Amazing Spider-man. But this arc is good, now that it's not focusing on showing you the new world without MJ. As least for now. New and Mighty Avengers are again! Better than the main title of Secret Invasion. Sorry folks. Kick-ass finally came out and it was awesome. Iron Fist (I miss the original artists)!!! Legion of Super-heroes, more Secret Invasion tie-ins (8 total), Teen Titans Year One, Jack of Fables, Blue Beetle! Final Crisis: Rogues Revenge! The Runaways Vol. 3 #1 came out. And I soooooo miss K. Vaughan (creator/writer), Adrian Alphona (creator/artist) and Jo Chen (hot young tai girl who drew the covers and needs to do a full book.... like the Runaways). Plus!!! Grey WW(bat symbol)D? Shirts!!! |
| #48ArtifactAug 31, 2008 16:40:12 | OMG!! This weeks comics were sooo many and sooo good!!! I like JLA but haven't read them since at least the late 80's ;). I got in early on the latest incarnation of Teen Titans but lost interest after Infinite Crisis. I dislike massive crossover events, they just ruin any flow a series has; nothing but marketing hooplah to sell a few extra issues. I only skimmed it, but Infinite Crisis killed Superboy and he was the Teen Titan I was most interested in; Kid Flash was also killed too I seem to recall. Anyway, big shake up afterwards and the story lost focus. Nice to see Donna Troy back, but still . . . Needless to say, I've no interest in Final Crisis or Secret Invasion. Massive Crossover Events are for the birds ;). I've read Amazing Spider-Man for years but lost interest during Civil War and One More Day. I'm looking into buying the Brand New Day hardcovers and jumping back in pretty soon. |

It's understandable. Skrulls have invaded the each in the most bad ass plan ever! But the tie in can be too much and I hate it when they're pointless. You don't have to read any of the DC major event tie-ins because they know not to make them that important. Good reads but not that important. Marvel on the other hands puts all the good stuff (the not punching and zapping) in the tie-ins as of late. For civil war all the good stuff was in Amazing Spider-man. The middle issues of the main title being lack luster or WTF? I need to read Spider-man. Mr. Parker goes to Washington was great! Same for Secret Invasion. All the good stuff is in the Mighty and New Avengers. Finding out who's be switched out and when and how and how the Skrull Empire is managing all this crap. That's the fun read. Anyways, I always tell people at the show to at least read the main titles of the major events if anything. But yeah. Crisis killed the Teen Titans. Although I hate Kryptonians and don't miss Connor at all. Kid Flash came back only to die again. But because the Flashes were at neg one we got a Flash back in Final Crisis instead of one dying. |

I suppose if you enjoy random bad-guys attacking the Avengers, pointless death scenes, and out-of-character actions/retcons, topped off by the Avengers, a group that saves the world on a weekly basis, quitting because an Avenger has mental issues. Not to be snarky or insulting of your taste, but that pretty much sums Infinite Crisis and Countdown to Final Crisis, IMO. |
