| #1ShiftkittyJul 15, 2009 14:33:18 | Inspired by the "Funny Things In Your Hometown" thread: Work sucks for the most part, but thankfully some funny things happen that take the edge off. The most common thing I come across in my job are "famous name" people. We've made detures for people named Jeff Bridges, Don Johnson, Shirley Black (better known as Shirley Temple), Charlie Brown, Charles Manson, and (drum roll please)... George Washington. Oddities in names include two patients of one dentist; Peggy Christian and Mary Pagan. I also encountered "Nancy Gnoll". I wondered if Otto Orc was going to show up some time later. Instead I encountered a person whose last name was "Genasi". Two names sound right out of Star Trek; "Yakligian" and "Innerarity". (Captain! The vortex is causing an innerarity in the Yakligian sector!) The last one from the denture case department is a slight typo. The doctor meant to say in his note that the denture needed to be rushed because the patient was in a rest home. What he wrote was that the denture needed to be rushed because the patient was in a restroom. From the "Foreigners Are Funny" department, one co-worker who is from Cambodia has an interesting grasp of the English language. He knows he's shaky with it, but that doesn't stop him from singing along with the radio. "Bad to the Bone" was playing, and the line came up that said "When I walk the streets Kings and Queens step aside...", to which he warbled loudly, "I want to walk the streets and be a queen on the side..." I am so glad this guy can laugh at himself! And finally, from the "I Work with Idiots" department, two co-workers, whom I suspect smoke too many questionable cigarettes, suddenly forgot about our color-coding system when a dentist changes a due date. The first date we get is written in red. If it gets changed, the new date is in green, and further changes are in blue. I don't know why we do it that way, but we've been doing it for years. Anyway, they suddenly forgot and kept asking me which date they were supposed to go by. I told them in almost the same words I described it here, and they must have found something entertaining in it because they haven't shut up about it for a week. It's annoying everybody. Finally I told them the easiest way to remember was to "go by the strength of the color wavelengths on the visible spectrum, but ignore any effects that Red Shift may have on any particular aspect of the processes to which they must subject the individual cases, but I suspect you won't understand any of that." (That last line is the important one...) In unison they turned around and said "Huh?" I patted their shoulders and said "Exactly..." |

| #5TheMonkJul 16, 2009 17:25:22 | I hate it when customers pay with a 200 bill and when you say you just started your shift and can't take the 200 bill, the customer just stands there for approximately 15 seconds, doing absolutely nothing, and just stares at you like you're gonna pull the money out of your butt all of a sudden. When the 15 seconds are up, there comes the inevitable question: "What am I gonna do now?" And I always keep asking myself 3 things when this happens. One, why do they just stand there doing nothing and stare off somewhere, I mean, is it such a shock when someone says they can't exchange a 200 bill? Two, why do they ask what they're gonna do, what's that got to do with me? Three, why do most people's brains take 15 seconds to digest the information that I can't exchange a 200 bill? I don't understand these people, if someone told me the same thing, I'd just promptly say "Ok, no problem, thank you." Then I'd say bye and go about my business. It's weird, to be honest lol. I work on a gas station, btw. |
