Was trying to decide if I actually liked Adam Lambert's music, and heard this song on the radio so I looked it up on youtube later on, as it's easier to pay attention to lyrics when you're not paying attention to the road, and as I don't have a desire to end my life in a burning wreck on the side of the interstate... Anyway. So I found Lambert's version and saw a link to the Love and Logic version. As my SO put it when he first heard Lambert's version "this song would probably sound better if the singer didn't sound so whiny". And then I played the Love and Logic version and he said "yeah, like that." Anyway. Personally I prefer the more subdued, more mellow version of Love and Logic. Lambert's has a strange dichotomy of this poppy music with these ... sorrowful? Is that the right word? Let's go with it for the moment... his version seems to be creating a dissonant feel between the words and the music, and I don't think he pulled it off quite well (for examples of lyrical/music dissonance where I think it works, see half of Lily Allen's music). Anyway. What do other people think of the song (and it's version)? According to what I read it was originally written for Pink, but I don't know if there's a recording of that anywhere online. And so the Cover Comparison series is born. I consider my Hallelujah thread to be the first. Also of note: When I talk about music, I'm talking out of my ass. I know how to play the trumpet and oboe at the amateur level, and never had any formal education in musical theory or composition, so I pretty much only speak from how it sounds to me, and how it appeals to my sense of audio aesthetics. |
