So today's random assault of music is Set Fire to the Rain.  Originally performed (to the best of my knowledge) by Adele for her 21 album.

I like it.  It's got a slow tempo and a bit of a dirge feel, mourning the end of a chapter of a life.  And being the kinda guy I am, the refrain1 invokes all sorts of imagery that work with superhero or epic fantasy stories.  Some of the images I have in mind include a literal interpretation (confrontation between the lovers in a rain storm with the rain turning to flames).

Anyway.

Just came across Gavin Mikhail's cover of the song2.

Now, if you're a Gavin Mikhail fan like myself, you'd have expected him to make the song even more of a melodramatic funeral dirge3.  So I was kinda surprised that he made it an uptempo cover.  It's interesting (to me) 'cause it still has the regret and sadness there, but also a bit of an... I dunno... anger?  That word might work.  More anger and resentment.

Anyway.  That's enough of my amateur analysis.  Point being, I like the original and the cover, and thought I'd share along with my thoughts.
________
1"But I set fire to the rain
Watched it pour as I touched your face
Well, it burned while I cried
'Cause I heard it screaming out your name, your name"
2Normally I see his new cover videos when they first come out but that was when I was real busy with the new job and didn't actually have internet yet.  So yeah.  Didn't see it.
3Don't judge me.  I like bittersweet stories that use the characters as emotional punching bags.  When done well.

Ive actually never heard of either one. I liked the first one better, I dunno, I guess it had more going on, instead of a just a guy and his keyboard, not that he wasnt good, just, I dunno seemed to be missin something, of course I say this after hearing the first one by Adel, If I hadnt heard theat one Id probably say it (Gavin Mikhail's version) was perfect.

If I'd heard the cover version first, I'd probably haved liked it better than I did. His version is pretty good in and of itself, but just doesn't compare to the original - the original has serious power to it.

I kind of like this cover, by Australia's Got Talent winner Jack Vidgen... He's apparently supposed to be the Aussie's answer to Bieber. And yes, that's a 14-year-old male, lol. (actual song starts around 1:48 into the vid)

I can't believe I listened to Adele on purpose.    My mom listens to Adele.  How ... lame.

Anyhoo, there's somethin' about her voice that's both beautiful and incredibly annoying.  I don't know how she does it.  The cover?  Umm ... *listening* ... *listening* ... *listening* ... I like the tempo better, but his voice is too ... breathy or something.  It annoys me even in bands I like a lot (Ville from HIM does it, too, but even more exaggerated and it just bugs me) let alone from someone I've never heard of covering a song from an artist I'm not interested in.  But yeah, Adele wins.

An interview with ozzy is more comprehensible. It's like she stops in the middle of half her words and juuu kinnnn a ge mushi mushi.

Cannot understand what she is saying.
