Speak to an associate at the store and ask them to call security to escort the guy off the premises.

This is an everyday occurrence for me. And I'm a guy.

You should have kindly invited him to follow you outside the store. then turn around and hit him in the face, then you should have asked him to leave you alone. If he continues to pester you then he has given you the OK to kick him in the family jewels. At this point is when you would proceed to do so. Once he falls on the ground you can go back into the store and continue to read the books.

This right here would have been great to see. :D

1) Kick him in the jewels 'till his rubies break.

OR the one that's more legal but teaches him less of a lession:

2) Yell for security.

I'd say you should tell him that such a vulgar and inappropriate request guaranties that it would never happen and threaten to call security.

Rusty serrated knife. Oil. Matches. Problem solved. I don't think that guys like that should keep their "jewels" since that was a very rude and brazen approach, showing a lack of respect for you and women in general. And that people like him are possibly rapists. More likely just a-holes. Make sure to tell him as you punish him that he needs a better pickup line.

I think this is the best way to deal with such things. While yeah, crazy creepy, there wasn't any physical threat (from what I can see in your post). If you did feel threatened, then calling for security or reacting physically would have been appropriate (IMO).

However, calling him on his behavior, and not trying to be "nice" about it is definitely needed - too many people don't speak up when someone acts like this, and therefore they continue.

What, pray tell, did you end up doing?

I'm curious to know that too. Unfortunately, disgusting, gross people are everywhere - my usual response to people like that is an ass-kicking, but as I get older, the prospect of a weekend in jail becomes less appealing.

I'm sorry that happened to you. I often wonder what the hell is going on in people's heads, but it's pointless. My best friend is a cop, and he tells me stories that make me wonder if a lot of people out there are even part of the same species.

Not to defend the idiot, BUT...

You could have said yes. Gotten a meal out of it all for the price of a quick grope thru your top.

Either way, I'm a bit disappointed that people immediatly go for the "Cut off his balls" approach to the situation. Say no, leave, call for help, whatever, but violence isn't the answer.

But yeah, at least he was straight forward about everything, even if it was a bit barbaric.

I'd reccomend, in that non-physically-threatening situation, to give him a verbal reaming. "What the hell is wrong with you!?" is always a good place to start, "Who the hell do you think you are" can usually be a good follow up, perhaps attatched to a "you are the most revolting individual I have met." I also reccomend speaking in a voice above the normal speaking tones, so that anyone nearby can hear and (with human curiosity as it is) come watch, as soon as you get one 'bystander', reiterate the degrading and disgusting thing he said with a good "Why the hell do you think you can walk up and ask to grab someone's breast? AND when you're refused think you can just offer to pay for it with food like some sort of hooker! Did you think this was one of your porns you filthy pervert? That women around secretly want you to sexually assault them or buy them off like a prostitute? That's what you think isn't it! That women go to book stores in the hopes that some grody slob will sexually assault them."

You see, with people watching, it's kind of a downer. Because at first he's all cocky for being 'ballsy' enough to just walk up and ask. But then there's all these people that know what he did, and they're surely giving him the 'look of shame'. All of the sudden, he has the disapproval of not just one person whos opinion he doesn't care about (I mean, come on, he obviously doesn't) but a whole group of strangers that he hadn't entered into the equation.

Oh, and one more thing. The law says that that sort of talk is sexual harassment. You still had grounds to call security. The law doesn't want you to stop going to stores because some grody perv is hanging around. So you can call anyone from security up to the police and file suit if you so please.

"Knowing is half the battle."

LOL, I sort of agree. It's definitely true that violence wouldn't solve the problem. In all human contact, it pays to be firm and stand by your convictions, but avoid unwarranted aggression. If you don't want him to grope you, OP did the right thing by saying no and sticking by it. If you're a bit more practical, make him give you the lunch up front (and keep an eye on that lunch).

Okay, in extreme quantities, violence might do the trick. But maybe the creepy bookstore dude is Satan himself (which would explain why he has the audacity to ask so explicitly in such a public place). What are you going to do? Kill evil itself with more evil? Wouldn't work. It would simply create more creepy bookstore dudes.

I have yet to encounter anything that can take more than one or five of my Maximisied Disintegrates and survive (much less the Snake Missile(s) to the organs thereafter).

On that off chance though, I am prepared for that eventuality; Forcecage, followed by orbital bombardment. Possibly even a planet-destroyer or a sun-buster torpedo if you're really fussy.

A supernova to the face is enough to at the very least mildly inconvenience anything short of an overdeity present in person.

I agree. Consider what Mr. Social will learn from the encounter:

Kick in the crotch: "Next time, don't warn the girl."
Talking: "Wow, maybe that was a bit inappropriate."

Most people are surprisingly cooperative if you talk to them in a reasonable manner. This is, of course, only an option if you're up to it; the situation would unsettle many people too much to allow a productive conversation. In that case, call for help or just brush him off and leave.

NOT clever, however, would be the (funny?) suggestions given earlier about leaving the bookstore with him or even agreeing to his proposal. That's the kind of risk taking that leads to becoming a victim.

As a final thought... don't know about the local laws, but what he was asking for (and the way he did it) may be a punishable offence. You might choose to report the incident to the police; it might help to prevent a more serious incident.

When you're dealing with someone that has demonstrated a complete lack of social understanding, aggression is not the best first choice. The guy already showed you that he has no regard for your comfort. He doesn't care about what you want. He knows what he wants and that's paramount to him. People like this can be incredibly dangerous. The disconnect displayed could run deeper than a simple lack of class. Any physical confrontation may be the spark needed to ignite further action towards you. The proper response, IMO, would be loudly berating the slob (as others have suggested) in order to draw attention to the situation, make an example and - most importantly - to surround yourself with potential "allies". ****-off a dude like this when you're alone, he may well end up eating your reproductive organs. Do it in front of a group and - at the very least - you'll have immediate help if things get uglier.

*sigh* Both posts, the one in this thread, and the one in the other, was not serious. Are you gonna keep following me around about that?

Anyways, the non-violent advice that was given is very good. Especially that part about telling him he'll never get laid. That really humiliates guys and wounds the ego.

Depends upon the guy. Some guys take this as a challenge, which means that they will not back down or give up. They will try and prove the girl wrong and what better way to do so then to prove her wrong personally.

I give the advice of violence because that is what I would expect to receive from women if I went around asking every woman I saw for some groping action.

I personally would not make a scene, but that is just because I don't want to be the center of attention (especially in a public place). If you don't want to make a scene then find an employee and complain about the guy.

What needs to be done is some social schooling for the random dude. He should have at least started by making a comment about drizzt or something. Yes, going straight in for the groping can work but quite often it will lead to a black eye.

His mistake was to roll a 1 on his diplomacy check when he doesn't have much of a skill bonus in diplomacy. Now, if guys can, more or less, be tough how to start a damn conversation, and how to keep one going, then we probably wouldn't have women (in book stores) contemplating how to hurt this guy. Instead she may think that the random dude is a bit charming, sweet, passionate, and well mannered.

The problem really isn't the guy but rather his tact.

Also another problem was were he decided to start the encounter. His approach would have worked better in a bar or dance club. He needs to learn to use a more civil approach when in a more civil place.

Exactly. I met this one girl at B&N who was looking for some Forgotten Realms books, and I helped her find the specific one she was looking for, and while we looked, we had a interesting conversation about D&D, Star Wars, and some idle chatter. Really, it's stupid how some guys think that the only goal with a girl is to get their head wet. They're the ones who have to shell out $50 an hour (or more) to get laid.

Yeah, this stuff happens, I get it sometimes, minus the whole "hugest I have ever seen" stuff. ;)

I find that disgusted glances followed up with a clear "no" and some kind of remark making sure they realize that their advance is not at all wanted is the way to go. Then I would say follow it up with the talk to security thing, although I have never had it go that far.

Violence isn't the answer,... yet. Now if the unwanted comment is followed up by unwanted touch, then.....
