| #1NovacatDec 17, 2009 23:16:58 | So I'm in the process of putting the finishing touches on my custom Star Trek RPG, for use by myself and my group. Since it's a custom system, it's kind of open to whatever options we want in regards playable character types. So, in the interest of making the system complete, I pose to you: If you were making a character for a Star Trek RPG, regardless the rule-set, what kind of character would you want to play? Note: It's TNG/DS9 era Star Trek, and set in the Alpha Quadrant, so no Voyager BS. |

Me, the ability to play civilians- Trader Captains or other similar creatures would be a plus. The FASA ST:RPG had Trader Captains and Merchant Princes as a supplement, but retained the general Star Trek formula. That one was also good for groups of up to ten players, and was exceedingly simple to work with. If you can still get access to it, you might want to look into it. -Sarena |

Me, the ability to play civilians- Trader Captains or other similar creatures would be a plus. My system doesn't assume anything about who the PCs are, except that they are the senior staff of a starship, or prominent support characters. They can be Federation, Klingons, Romulan spies, Ferengi raiders, or just freelance mercenaries. What I meant to ask was a little more specific. I'm looking for race choices and "professions", such as doctor, spy, engineer, merchant, etc. There's no set list. I'm just trying to see if my system can work to generate any character type that a player might want. |

Not that these stats will mean much without context, but here's my take on it: Human (I'm assuming) Physique 2 -Brawling -Shooting Mind 2 -Doctoring Savvy 3 -Intuition -Deceit -Awareness -Charisma Traits (11 Drama): Totally not a Spy "Your Secret's Safe With Me" Odd Sense of Humor Patriot Cruel "Don't Tell me the Odds!" More Women than Kirk Klingons Ate my Baby Compulsive Liar "I saw it on a holonovel once!" |

| #7NovacatDec 18, 2009 15:02:38 | I would love to see the rest of the system. Well, it's not finished yet, but I don't want to post what I have here because it then basically becomes property of WotC. It's kind of an amalgamation of the Spirit of the Century system (also known as the Fudge system) and Active Exploits, which is a diceless RPG. I'm especially proud of the starship combat system, which is 100% original, and I think adequately incorporates starship stats, tactics, and bridge crew stats, all while staying satisfyingly simple and abstract (no board or minis). |

A Gorn dual-autoshotgun wielding pirate who has a small ship with huge shield generators in order to ram other ships and who uses transporters as weapons. |
| #9NovacatDec 18, 2009 15:11:07 | In a nutshell, here's how to interpret the character stats. The items with numbers by them are the attributes. They're on a possible scale of 0 to 4 after racial adjustments. The items listed with them that have dashes before them are the character's trained skills. They provide a +2 bonus on related tasks. The list of traits are descriptive terms that define the character's personality, strengths, and weaknesses. If a trait applies to a situation in a positive way, the character can spend Drama to get a +2 bonus to a single task, or to all repetitive task (such as Shooting in a fire-fight) in a single scene. If a trait applies negatively, the player can choose to either automatically fail at a related task, or act in a way contrary to the character's interest, and gain one Drama in exchange. The difficulty of all tasks is a number from 0 to 8. 0 - Routine. You can do it in your sleep. 1 - No effort needed for even an average Joe. 2 - This is the “professional” level. Most daily starship duties are this level. 3 - Tricky, but not undoable. This is for people who are good at stuff. 4 - Talent alone can’t carry you here. You must have some advantage to succeed. 5 - Hard enough to make Wesley Crusher blush. This had better be your specialty. 6 - A long shot, even for the best. Extreme circumstances. 7 - Spock is going to tell you the odds of success (using large numbers). 8 - It is unreasonable to expect success at this difficulty level. |
| #10NovacatDec 18, 2009 15:21:41 | A Gorn dual-autoshotgun wielding pirate who has a small ship with huge shield generators in order to ram other ships and who uses transporters as weapons. I didn't have stats for Gorns, so I'm adding that in. Physique 4 -Brawling -Endurance -Shooting Mind 1 -Resolve Savvy 2 -Awareness -Deceit Traits (10 Drama): Aggressive Death Wish Slow Merciless Penchant for Destruction All for Me and All for Me Latinum is Forever Wanted Better you than me Fearless Unbreakable The ship: Weapons 3 Defenses 5 Maneuvering 5 Structure 3 Crew 2 EDIT: Replaced the trait Terrifying Presence with Penchant for Destruction, which is a more well-defined trait. |
| #11dirtyfrankDec 20, 2009 12:34:11 | Human scientist (physics) |
| #12scypioDec 22, 2009 13:11:42 | A fiesty command officer (First Officer?) with a background in engineering and a perchance for conflict. Not only can I command a tactical encounter and inspire my men, but I discuss why my ship is falling apart. I don't expect to be as good as a dedicated engineer, but I can use some tricks to form great stragems or rig a part if my engineer is gone. |

Race: Human (I assume) Position: Commander Physique 1 -Brawling Mind 3 -Engineering -Resolve Savvy 3 -Awareness -Intuition -Charisma -Diplomacy Traits (11 Drama): Cowboy Keep 'er Together Aggressive Friendly A Flaw in your Design Efficiency is Key History Buff Inspires Confidence Friends in High Places Optimist |

| #15zombie_babiesDec 23, 2009 9:25:46 | I would like to play a Breen Weapons Officer or Thot - if we're power gamin' and political. ;) I know that would make me a bad guy, but it's what I'd like to try. The Breen are cool. |
