With the lack of 4e based D&D video games, I find myself comming back to the oldies more and more. With the only D&D video game released this year being NWN2 Mysteries of Westgate (just a downloadable adventure pack) it seems pretty slim on the video game front. Hopefully we will have another video game D&D revival using 4e rules, but for the moment I think that D&D has been worn out in the video game world.

So what D&D video games do you like, or left an impression on you?

For me its been games like Baldurs Gate (PC version, both 1&2), Planescape Torment, Icewind Dale, Neverwinter Nights (the Bioware one) and the like. I really liked NWN1 despite the backlash from the community when it was released. I loved the new options that the online features opened up, and I fondly remember many online NWN conventions hosted by NWConnections. It was amazing to see the video game merging as well as it did with the PnP game. I still log into that game and see how the online community is doing these days (still strong considering its age!)

I never really played the famed gold box series back in the day as I did not have a capable PC back in those days.

Anyways, I was considering reinstalling my copy of Baldurs Gate 1 and 2 to go through them again, so i started feeling all nostalgic and decided to post here and share!

Jun 07, 2009 1:39:41 I never did get to play Balder's Gate, but I keep Torment installed for inspiration. There's so much to draw from in that game...as well as (if you find it) one of the best tutorials of the planes I've ever seen.

Jun 07, 2009 3:52:21 Definitely Baldur's gate 2, though for some reason I never seem to be able to keep my hand on the expansion for 2 , I lost it again.

As far as I know thats the only D&D game I have in my collection.

Jun 07, 2009 12:16:44 Not sure on the title, but the first D&D game I ever played (video or otherwise) was some old one based around Darksun. In retrospect it probably wasn't nearly as awesome as my memory says it was, but my experience with it is what led me to pick up Baldur's Gate years later.

I'd say that of the D&D computer/video games I've played, Baldur's Gate II was probably the best. The interactions between the characters is what really made it for me, throw in a plot far too epic to be contained in one game, yet still feeling like there was resolution and progress at the end of each one, and it's easily one of my favorite video game series with II being the best of the best.

While Neverwinter Nights was OK, it didn't have that epic feel that the Baldur's Gate games had (even before they went Epic with a capital 'E'). I haven't actually finished Neverwinter Nights 2, as the plot got real boring for me.

Jun 07, 2009 15:18:38 I played NWN 1, and the plot just never got interesting past learning about the plague. I felt like I was just in the game to bash stuff, and was very limited to how I could interact with the world. It felt very limiting to me. This opposed to the excessive RP freedom of Torment, for example. But it was alright, I played it though, and still pull it out from time to time. I own NWN 2, but every time I start to play it, I just get sick of the opening. For one thing, it's railroading...you are forced to play an adopted teenager just reaching adulthood in a small village. The whole festival as an opening thing, just doesn't work for me. So I didn't stick with it long.

Jun 07, 2009 20:25:29 I've only bothered to play the Neverwinter Knights games (1&2+Expansions), and they were excellent. Never really got into the other games that attempted to mimic the world(s) of D&D.

Jun 09, 2009 19:53:26 When I was younger, I used to watch my uncle play Eye of the Beholder on SNES. Last year, I bought it for the Game Boy Advance (updated to 3rd edition rules). I also have Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance for the GBA, it is pretty fun. My favorite D&D video game is a tie between Demonstone for the PS2, and D&D Tactics for the PSP. D&D Tactics is pretty fun, if a bit lacking (no Wildshape, no multiclassing, and the spells Animate Dead and Create Undead function more like summon spells).

It would be cool (highly unlikely) if the made an 3.5 game that allowed you to play as a artificer or druid, and allowed you to follow their paths. Something along the lines of Baldur's Gate or Demonstone, but in a different world.

Jun 10, 2009 10:50:29 D&D is becoming too anime! Anime is based on D&D! D&D is becoming too video-gamey! Video-games are based on D&D! It's like we're in some sort of unrealistic world where things influence each other or something!

Jun 10, 2009 12:42:45 I would like to see a remake of Baldurs Gate 1&2 with the 4e rules. I loved those games so much, and it would be great to see them reimagined with current technology and 4th edition rules.

A sequel would be cool as well, but I don't think it could live up to what was accomplished with the 1st 2 games and expasions.

But the D&D video games I'd want to play if I had the chance? There have been, to my knowledge, not one, but TWO D&D arcade games. The best part? They are both beat-em-ups. I want to play them so badly.
