Deader Than Disco: The Apocalypse Has Arrived!

Introduction

So, after some conversations I had with Pigknight a few days ago, and seeing how there isn't enough interest in the Edition War (which you might have seen if you are a long time OTTer), I decided to go ahead and try a new project I've been thinking about.

Said project is directing a zombie apocalypse, of sorts, where players will try to survive a zombie horde, and do one of three things:

A) Discover how the horde originated, and transmit that knowledge to any other survivors, to avoid the tragedy from happening again.

B) Surviving until rescue arrives.

C) Getting the hell out of dodge.

Your Role:

Those who sign up will take the role of a survivor, who has banded together with other people to try and escape infection. You don't know what has happened, you are poorly equipped, and you'll need all of your wits and courage to survive. The game will be mostly in the style of a Choose Your Own Adventure book, where characters will choose one from a set of predetermined decision, though some RPG elements will come up once in a while. If you want a better idea about the game, think of a Fighting Fantasy or Lone Wolf book, but the stats will matter far, far less.

Welcome To The Jungle:

Now, the setting: The city of Lionwhite is a sprawling metropolis, about as big as most capitals. A few days ago, it used to be a bustling hive of commerce...but that has changed. Today, packs of zombies, psychopaths, and jaded survivors roam the streets, showing little to no mercy to those outside of their cliques. Most of the infrastructure has survived the ravaging of the old voodoo children, but food is quickly becoming scarce, and weapon, vehicles, and shelter are increasingly hard to come by. Nobody knows what's happening...but one thing you know for sure: this place is not safe anymore. The Zacks are spreading fast, and you have to get out of here before you become one of them.

The Rules:

Now, those interested will have to submit a character sheet. Here it is:

Name:
Age:
Hair Color:
Eyes:
Height:
Weight:
Skin Color:
Build:
Occupation:
Demeanor:
How He/She Survived:
Traits:
Advantages:
Flaws:
Backstory:
Items:

The first ten are self-explanatory. Demeanor is how your character acts. Is he or she stiff and formal, or as cheerful and wisecracking as circumstances permit? Does he care for the rest of the group or does he/she see them as nothing more than tools to facilitate her escape from Lionwhite?

How You Survived is something to explain WHY you've formed a group. How did you escaped the hordes of undead and the psychopaths who have pushed their humanity into the background? How did you arrive to your current shelter?

Traits are a quick, one-word way of summarizing the character. Think of a cliff-notes version of Demeanor, Advantages, Flaws, and Backstory.

Advantages are the skills your character possesses. (A word of advice here: no Rambos will be allowed. Even professional military men will be just normal people, more weapon-savvy than those who aren't part of peacekeeping forces, but nothing more. Additionally, you'll need a good backstory to convince me about letting you keep amazingly useful stuff like a silenced rifle or body armor. I'd prefer it if you stuck to normal citizens, mostly. But enough of that) Their tenacity, their ability with computers, their driving skills...those are your abilities.

Flaws, meanwhile, are what your character is bad at. Their cowardice, their disastrous shooting skills, their bad luck...remember, flaws must be convincing and appropriate to the character. If your character is as strong as three normal men, he'll have to be crippled or similarly disadvantaged. You don't need many flaws or advantages, but they must be balanced to each other. A Character could have no advantages, but, conversely, no flaws, for instance. Additionally, slight advantages will probably be allowed with no penalt, such as having a steady hand when under pressure. This might be a zombie apocalypse, but I'm giving you a chance to win anyway. :P

Backstory is...well, the character's life experiences. Was he or she bullied in high school. Did she graduate from college two years earlier than expected? Was he set to be a prizefighter before an accident occurred?

Finally, Items is the stuff your character has. No need to explain it, I believe. You'll have to keep this updated throughout the game, so as to make bookkeeping easier for me.

...And that's all. The city is waiting for you...

Wait, wait, wait.

I thought PK was still in the works for his own Zombiepocalypse? What is this, a power snatch or somethin'? I'd still rather wait for PK's Zombie's, he had some swell ideas rattlin' 'round inside his noggin. Of course, if PK gives up on his idea 'cause of this thread, then I'll join you mate.

Pigknight seems to have given up on the idea, given how he mentioned it'd be up soon...a week ago. So, since I realized the potential of this idea, I decided to take the concept and run with it. If he wants to take over or make his own game, I'll close this down, but I figured its worth a shot.

Yeah, it seems interesting, Arms, but I don't wanna step on piggy's toes. If we get somethin' from him passin' it off to you or sayin' he bailed on his project for whatever reason, I'll certainly consider it. Though I was hopin' to play a zombie ... brains .... :P

I've plans for playing zombies, too, it's just that we need survivors to get the ball rolling. I'll outline the special roles if there's enough interest in this.

Also, d'you really want Pig directing this? We'd get anime references and zombie love triangles up the wazoo. :P

PS: To be honest, I DO want to see what he has in mind if he wants to continue with the project. It's just that I think there's so much potential that it'd be a shame to let it go to waste.

I wouldn't have to be a zombie. I'm cool with the survivor role, too. And I think it's kind of a neat idea to maybe allow survivors that don't to maybe play a zombie after they become one - if that's your angle. I honestly doubt piggy will give us his zombie game cuz he's workin' on that RPG or whatever. And I have no problem with you runnin' a game. It's just that I personally would be more comfortable if piggy says it's all good. And I kinda expect him to do just that. Sort of a courtesy thing since he mentioned it first IIRC. had you posed the idea originally, I'd be makin' my sheet up now. :D

If It's Cool I'll Join

Show

Name: Sheldon Wheeler
Age: 18
Hair Color: Black
Eyes: Green
Height: 6'2"
Weight:165 lbs.
Skin Color: Pasty White
Build: Medium, a bit out of shape thanks to his time spent mostly indoors.
Occupation: Comic Book Store worker (clerk, stock boy)

Demeanor: Sheldon is a bit of a goof. He is prone to make comic book, movie, Sci-Fi, and Fantasy references, even if people have no idea what he is talking about. He's generally calm in traumatic situations, and fancies himself a leader of men - despite being hardly suited to lead anyone. He is arrogant, but isn't afraid to help people. He imagines himself dying in a heroic way, but in reality, he can hardly imagine sacrificing himself. He attempts to form a strong bond with those around him. Sheldon has a tendency to be awkward around women. He thinks he is a suave, charming guy, but often he is rejected due to his stereotypical nerdiness.

How He/She Survived: When the Zombie Apocalypse broke out, Sheldon was at work. His owner was one of the first to succumb to whatever the plague was. Sheldon gathered his things, grabbing a backpack of things he had prepared for just such a situation. He'd watched Dawn of the Dead a few months earlier, and thought it might be a good idea. Sheldon fled, hoping to find someone like him who might be leaving the city.

Traits: Nerdy, Brave, Prepared, Calm, Talkative, Flirtatious

Advantages: Computer Skills (including Hacking), Nearly Unlimited Knowledge of: (Sci Fi, Fantasy Comic Book and geeky stuff), gifted in academia(Major Subjects: History, Physics), took a lightsaber dueling class, speaks: (English, Greek, Latin, Spanish, and Klingon), Intermediate Archery skill, and is a fast runner.

Flaws: Physically weak, requires high prescription glasses, no money, weakness for hard candy, clumsy, and has a terrible sense of direction, but believes he has a good sense of direction.

Backstory: Sheldon was near the top of his high school senior class before the ZA broke out. He worked hard at his menial job at the comic store, enjoying the chance to talk about the things he loved. His personality was a major influence on his school friends, as he was most comfortable with less academic students, and he found that the academic elite shunned him for his hobbies.

Items: Backpack containing 3 changes of clothes (all T-Shirts and shorts with various Scifi/Fantasy/Comic/Movie references on them), a bag of hard candy, phone (broken), flash drive containing a computer virus he has been working on, and a Shortbow with a quiver of 20 arrows, as well as the clothes on his back.

Just in case piggy gives Arms the go-ahead, here's the me I'll be if this goes down:

Show
Name: Randy Williams
Age: 42
Hair Color: Brown
Eyes: Blue
Height: 5' 8"
Weight: a robust 132 lbs
Skin Color: White (with a farmer's tan)
Build: Slight
Occupation: Mom an' Pop garage car mechanic.
Demeanor: Randy has developed a no-nonsense and pessimistic view of the world. The ZA to him is just another trial to be faced. He tends to approach things with a grim determination and a surprising confidence. If asked where this oddly calm courage comes from, he'd likely say something like "What's the worst thing that'll happen? They eat ya alive an' that's all ya know. The way I see it is ya either keep on fightin' or ya let 'em eat ya now. They're likely to getcha anyway so I don't begrudge no man for givin' up. My daddy taught me better'n 'at, though, so ya won't see me layin' down for no zombeh."
How He/She Survived: Randy survived because this is what he's been waiting for in one form or another for the better part of the last 25 years. Once the **** hit the fan, all of his survivalist instincts kicked in. He immediately donned his hunting clothes, grabbed his hunting pack, a gun and began heading towards the outskirts of the city. His only problem is that he doesn't know the city all that well. Having moved here recently, he needs the help of the group to find his way out.
Traits: Self-reliant, strong will to survive, eerily calm, quiet, espouses the KISS method
Advantages: Randy is a survivalist and an exceptional hunter. This helps him to find food, hide from danger and set plans to move through areas as undetected as possible. He is also skilled with a variety of firearms. His work in the garage and his poor beginnings have made him a good handyman. He can repair vehicles of most types and fix all sorts of odds and ends - provided the right tools.
Flaws: Randy doesn't know much about computers or any other high tech gadgetry. He also has very limited knowledge of the city's layout as he'd only been here for a limited time. He's not terribly comfortable around large groups of people and has little patience for men he deems "soft". Randy won't trust anyone until they've earned it and won't tolerate anyone that doesn't pull their weight. He can be abrasive at times.
Backstory: Randy Williams was brought up out in the country by a single father. He was an only child. His dad was a heavy drinker and would frequently beat him for the smallest infraction. Despite that, Randy feels that he deserved what he got and that his dad has forged him into the man he is today. Still, hanging around an abusive drunk is not the smartest thing to do and he avoided it as often as he could by escaping into the woods near his shack of a house. Randy befriended some hunters and trappers he met during his wanderings and they were kind enough to teach him how to make it in the outdoors. From tracking, stalking and shooting to cooking, camping and gathering, Randy got quite the education. Out there, he was living a good life. Unfortunately, he still had to go home. And home is where Randy got the rest of his learnin'. His father was prone to insane ramblings about the end of the world. He believed that city living had made people soft and that a disaster would come along sooner or later to wipe 'em all out. Looks like the ol' drunk was right. ;)

Eventually, Randy's father died. He was stabbed to death over some train wreck of a woman in a bar. Randy took over the farm and did the best he could to keep it afloat. It wasn't enough. With no real education to speak of and practically no people skills, Randy was forced off the family plot when the bank auctioned it off to cover the defaulted loans. He went to the city and found work at the garage he was employed at when the ZA began. Randy used most of his money to pay for his apartment, food and to get things for his hobby - hunting.
Items: When things began to spiral out of control, Randy grabbed what he could and took off. His gear includes hunting clothing (warm, water repellant), a backpack, fire starting gear, flares, a couple of knives, a whetstone, binoculars (10 power), 25' of nylon braided rope (1/4" dia), boots, a canteen and 47 rounds of .30-06 ammunition (hand loads). He was also able to bring his rifle, a Remington model 700 BDL in .30-06 topped with a Leupold VXIII 3x9 scope. Not exactly the best anti-zombie weapon, but he figures it'll help get food and take out the occasional brain eater.

Unfortunately, Randy was unable to bring any of his tools from the garage. If somethin' needs repaired, tools will need to be located before he can attempt it.

Since there's enough interest, it's about time to spill the beans.

Basically, I've been toying with the ideas for the game's plot. Where you'll go, your choices, and all that. In the end, I've three plot choices plus two style choices. They are:

A) Project Moontan: The goal of P. M. would be to discover the origin of the zombie horde, and escape would be secondary. A means to escape would be provided once you found out what happened. Zombies would be living, if dumb creatures. Special zombies might make an appearance late in the game.

B) Thriller Night: Rescue is on the way, and the idea is to survive until it comes. The first goal would be to find a shelter, and then you'd have to outlast any attackers. Zombies would probably be masses of Romero/Russo braindead mooks.

C) Highway Stars: The goal of this one would be simple: get out of the deathtrap that Lionwhite is, and fast. Zombies would be few and far between, but strong, fast, and intelligent.

Meanwhile, the style choices (besides the standard flavor of each possible plot) would be:

A) Monster Mash: Silliness, basically. A comedy game.

B) Dead In The Water: I'll be out to screw you. This game would be one where I'd act as a killer DM.

So, which one do you prefer?

Edit: El, I'm mostly waiting for something to happen. I don't really have anything to add right now.

Xavier

Name: Xaiver Vandoven
Age: 26
Hair Color: Black
Eyes: Blue
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 175lbs
Skin Color: Healthy Tan
Build: Athletic
Occupation: Congenitally Wealthy
Demeanor: Xavier is better than the average man, and they know it. He carries himself with cool and commanding confidence, secure in the knowledge that he is a natural born leader. Noone can resist his charms.
How He/She Survived: Busy hosting, and winning, a private fencing tournament, Xaiver did not notice the zombie apocaypse untill it was beating down his door. Rallying the fencers, Xavier lead the battle from the sidelines untill it became clear that the battle was doomed, at which point he sliped out the back into his garage, and took his car for a joy ride, crushing zombies beneath tires and battering the delicate frame. At this rate he will never make it to his country estate. He needs to find a mechanic, and fast.
Traits: Confident, Arrogant, Self absored, Charismatic
Advantages: Xavier owns a private wilderness retreat secluded in a nearby stretch of wilderness, not that hes spent much time there. He also has a private Yacht, docked in a city far to the south. He spends alot of time on his hobbies: fencing, racing, and traveling so he has a very good knowledge of the cityscape.
Flaws: Xavier has general disdane for the more mundane aspects of life and is lacking in the simplest of skills: cooking, cleaning, fixing, building. He has never handled a firearm beliving them to be clumsy and loud weapons, well beneath his status. He has phenominal knowledge of the local roadways in the region and where all the fine dining and entertainment spots are, but the low rent establishments are bellow his notice. He couldn't give you directions to a supermarket or auto mechanic if you put a gun to his head.
Backstory: Xaviers grandfather was an immigrant and successfull inventor, rising out of obscurity into comfortable wealth before passing his business estates to his young sun, Xavier's father, who consulidated the ventures into a sucessfull holding company, providing a comfortable retirement to the two men. Born much later, Xavier never had much patience for the simple things in life and has taken steps to distance himself from his grandfathers humble beginings. The company has seen huge growth since Xavier took over five years ago, after the death of his father. This growth was not do to any impresive guidance on Xaviers part, but rather to his ability to find the right peon for the right position and his willingness to keep his nose out of his own business affairs.
Items: Keys to the kingdom. Fencing suit and Epee. Antique fencing saber. Suitcase of exspensive suits. Trunk full of exspensive bottled water.

B For Plot. I like zombies as undead, unintelligent, slow, but only killed by headshots/destroyed brain. Romero FTW.

Though I'd be willing to do any of the three scenarios, I'm not a fan of fast Z's that are just humans who are alive but insane.

Name: James Ryman
Age: 17
Hair Color: blond
Eyes: green
Height: 5'7"
Weight: 140 lbs
Skin Color: fair
Build: athletic
Occupation: high school student / professional cosplayer / musician

Demeanor: James is an all around good guy, fond of childish pranks, and wild parties. He is naturally talented in many areas, but lacks the ambition to make something of himself, since he's content being a nerd. He hopes that he'll be able to get a job by either teaching the various Jedi lightsaber styles, or the band that he's in will get big. So, he's also a bit delusional.

How He/She Survived: James had ditched out of school on the day the zombie apocalypse began, hanging out in the mall with a few friends. The zombies quickly spread throughout the building, and James barely managed to escape. He got back home and found his house trashed, but found his lightsaber and robe in perfect condition. Grabbing that, along with random possessions, and some food, he left, hoping to get out of the city, and find his friends.

Traits: Reckless, thrill seeking, nerdy

Advantages: can run fast, knows the Jedi lightsaber techniques, has extensive Star Wars knowledge, skilled in computer use

Flaws: short attention span, has to wear glasses, weak ankles

Backstory: James was raised in a foster home until he was 13, when he was taken in by his parents, a police officer and a chef. He lived a normal life until the apocalypse began.

Items: Jedi robe, prop Lightsaber (double-bladed), backpack filled with clothes and food, cell phone with half a battery

Well, from what I learned, the Jedi fighting style was also made for actual combat (primarily one on one) but it isn't likely as practical as fencing, but you'll also be less likely to know what moves I'm going to use, so can we just say that half the time I win, half the time you win?

Ryan Fahey

Age: 36
Hair Color: brown
Eyes: brown
Height: 5’8’’
Weight: 165
Skin Color: white
Build: wiry

Occupation: Private Eye. Not the Hollywood type, either-- he investigates insurance fraud.

Demeanor: Slow to act (except when it counts), introspective, tries not to speak more than he has to.

How He/She Survived: After a long case investigating theft insurance, Ryan wandered into a local liquor store to pick up a pint of scotch, when warnings of the ZA first started belting over the owner’s radio. In fact, the old man owning the store probably saved Ryan’s life, because if he hadn’t insisted on locking the door and throwing down the shutters to the windows immediately-- practically taking Fahey hostage-- the PI probably would have drove home and woken up with a hang-over and an orgy of zombies outside his apartment. After nearly a week in the store, they gathered what supplies they had and took off to find other survivors (presumably splitting ways at some point).

Traits: Ill-shaven, slightly strung out. Ryan is usually slothful, but when pushed to action, or to ‘crack a case’ he can be a useful asset. He rarely gets overly upset and always tries to keep a level head… when possible.
Advantages: lie/mood detection, exceptional eye for detail and photographic memory, able (but reluctant) to handle firearms

Flaws: drinking and smoking, (possibly) cracks under threat (see backstory)

Backstory: Ryan Fahey began his career as an exceptional detective on the police force. His near photographic memory and uncanny ability to retain details allowed him to shoot to the top of his division. These traits not only helped at the crime scene, however, as Fahey discovered he could pick up subtle facial expressions and body language during interrogations to ‘read’ people.
Although decently trained with a firearm, Fahey never had reason to pull it. His partner was shot during the apprehension of a suspected murderer on a case four years ago. Officers found Fahey, gun in hand, in shock nearby. The suspect was never apprehended, and Fahey has never talked about it-- or his dismissal-- except during the interrogation... or one of his extreme bouts of drunkedness that began after the incident.

Items: Flashlight, registered revolver (only a half dozen spare bullets), cell phone, pack of cigarettes and a half pint of scotch

I think that the double saber is a unique enough weapon that TA's dood wouldn't know how to fight properly, plus the Jar'Kai and Juyo styles combined would make it even harder. That's like, three things that he prolly won't know how to fight.

Alright, so your assertion is that Jedi combat techniques are worthwhile. Got it.

What are you gonna do, poke a zombie with you thin blade. at least sabers/sting can headshot.

Yah I know, thats why I picked it. Pretty much have to stab them straight through the eye to stop them. Otherwise I can just blind them and dodge.

Okay here we go, I tried to keep him from being too overpowered. I'm not sure if I suceeded or not, so let me knowif I need to tone him down somewhat. Oh and I vote A for plot and don't care for the other question.

Show
Name: Ranadiel Marius

Age: Looks around 25, but claims to be centuries old

Hair Color: Drty blonde

Eyes: Green

Height: 6' 4"

Weight: 205 pounds

Skin Color: Very slightly tan

Build: Lanky with well defined muscles

Occupation: Appears to be mental patient, claims to be a dimensional wanderer

Demeanor: Ranadiel is very detatched from everything going on around him. As far as he is concerned, he's been through this sort of thing hundreds of times before, and he knows he'll manage to get through this one as well. He's more concerned with how he is going to get off this plane of existence then the apocolypse right in front of him.

How He Survived: He claims that he was forcefully teleported to this place during the middle of a war he was taking part in, and arrived shortly before meeting the rest of the group. The fact that he appeared walking out of a mental instition leaves that story as suspect.

Traits: Honorable, Honest(as far as he is concered), and Quite Weird

Advantages: He's quite skilled at the use of a longsword, specilizing in multiple opponents at once, and has decent skills with shortswords, throwing daggers, rapiers, and throwing stars. He is quite knowledgeable at biology and the occult. He also seems to quite resiliant to injuries(at least those that he causes to himself).

Flaws: He has no knowledge about technology beyond the PSP he carries with him. He lacks common sense. He has a poor grasp on how physics works, and he doesn't comprehend how the world is supposed to work. He has horrible aim with any form of ranged weaponry except those mentioned above. He has absolutely no knowledge of any place in the city(or at least claims not to).

Backstory: He claims to be a hero on his home plane who saved the world from being consumed from the void. He says that he has started travelling accross the planes in order to find some friends who were scattered accross the multiverse during the attack by the void. He says he has been to countless worlds in his travels. He also claims that for some reason his magic doesn't work on this plane so he is stuck here for the time being. He also walked staright out of a mental institute after the zombies broke down a wall.

Items: A longsword, twin retractable katars, twin boot blades, a chain mail vest, an outfit that would fit in at a renaisance festival, and a PSP that seems to never need to be recharged.

i wonder how were all gonna meet?

Xavier is driving around in an exspensive sports car in a fencing suit running over zombies while looking for a mechanic. Z_B is playing a mechanic..... Rex is playing a comicbook store clerc. Mabey the comic book store is across the road from the Mechanics shop where Z_B's character went to try and scrounge up a map of the city to try and leave.

Edit: Decaon came out of his house and bumped into Revolver Viking and, after a tense standoff they headed down the road together, where they saw a white form running over zombies in a fancy car, and, after jumping out of the way, followed it down the road to the mechanics.

Edit:Edit: Heather bumped into lunatic guy early on. Recognizing her danger in being alone, and taking pity on him for his obvious mental illnes (she knows how that feels) she let him come with her. They are wandering, looking for other survivors, when they hear someone talking way to loudly about the Justice league.

Bring on them Zombies!

Freelance Mercenary
Name: Kelly Archer Troy “KAT”
Age: 33
Hair Color: Chestnut
Eyes: Green
Height: 6' 1”
Weight: 220 lbs
Skin Color: Caucasian
Build: Athletic
Occupation: Police Officer (former), Freelance Mercenary (current)
Demeanor: Kelly is a tough, grumpy mercenary, strict and often prefers to use violence to solve problems rather then talking. He suffers from an overconfidence that has lead him into trouble on the field however, and he is more at home functioning on his own then in a group, but the current situation has forced him to adapt.
How He/She Survived: Kelly was in the Precinct when all the bad went down, allowing him to arm himself with numerous weapons and survival gear, most of which was taken out of the evidence lockers and storage. When the initial outbreak began, he made a terrific first-stand within the Precinct, killing many of his former colleagues in order to survive. He smashed his way out of the Precinct with an armored car, though it had to be abandoned after the damage from the crash. He's been making his way throughout the city since then, picking off zombies and scavenging using his advanced training when he can.
Traits: Tough, Trained, Gruff, Lonewolf, Antisocial, Overconfident
Advantages: Trained in a variety of firearm and martial styles, along with advanced survival training and a limited medical experience.
Flaws: Overconfident to a fault, doesn't work well with others he doesn't see as equals, likes to do things his own way, and can pick fights for the sake of fighting.
Backstory: Kelly is the son of a career soldier who died when he was in his teens, leaving him to a broken mother and a drug-addicted brother. His father, while alive, had often taken him hunting and shown him how to fire a gun and skin a animal for meat. Shortly after the death of his father, his brother, Sheldon, died from a mass drug-over dose. His mother, a woman suffering from depression, started selling herself on the street in her twisted grief. Abandoning his mother, Kelly fled the small town until he reached Lionwhite. He rented up with a relation, and when he was eighteen opted to enroll in the local law enforcement. He rose steadily through the ranks, though seven years into his post he found out his mother had been killed in a gang-related drive-by. Enraged, Kelly tracked down and inflicted near life-threatening wounds to those responsible. He was relieved of duty, with pay, and subject for two years of counseling He returned thereafter to the force, and joined the anti-gang squad. He was there for many years, cracking down on gang violence, druggies, pimp, street women and all other manner of sleazy hoodlums without remorse. While he's never unleashed his angry like he did so many years ago, it was clear he enjoyed busting knee caps and blowing holes in peoples feet to stop them from “resisting arrest”, or just to shut them up. Considered a loose canon, he was ultimately discharged, and left the force to start a one-man merc operation. Still friendly with his former Precinct, he used that influence to obtain files, arms and equipment when need be.
Items: Wearing standard-issue Kevlar anti-riot vest, a hip-holstered Glock 37 .45, shoulder-slung Mossberg 590, KM2000 combat knife in right shin holster, standard-issue police riot baton strapped to left hip. Shoulder-slung backpack with attached bedroll, contains: assorted limited ammunition, canteen, nylon rope, binoculars, portable burner, Swiss Army Knife, assorted medical kit and duct tape.

For those who want one, I'd like to remind everyone that there WAS an option C for style: you could vote for just sticking to the campaigns style, instead of being between the rock and hard place that would be comedy or killer DM'ing.

Also, I'll have to veto the number of weapons. I've no problem with a FEW weapons, but everyone is already pretty loaded, so I'm imposing a ban: three weapons at most, or four if you can convince me that there's a balancing factor for it. And no more than two projectile weapons, and no explosives unless you want a single grenade/molotov cocktail, which will take the space of one weapon. You're not supposed to toe-to-toe the zombies, for the most part. Fighting WILL draw psychos and Zack's to you, and you WILL be overwhelmed, even if I'm playing comedy or style, because you're normal people, not action heroes. In this game, discretion is the better part of valor.

Also, can someone tally up the votes for plot?

PS: I nearly forgot! Those who want to CAN play as undead, but I want a minimum of four survivors, so if too many people want that, we'll roll randomly to determine who get to be my lieutenants. :P

That's cool, though, if I say "My character was in a firearm loaded police Precinct when this bad went down, and simply raided the storage and evidence lockers", does this still get me off the hook? Don't make me choose between my guns man, don't do it!

That's a pretty good explanation. I s'pose you can keep 'em, if your character had the foresight to get there before anyone else. Let me reiterate, though: combat in areas where sound will travel is a Bad Idea (TM). You'll have to run like hell afterwards.

That's a pretty good explanation. I s'pose you can keep 'em, if your character had the foresight to get there before anyone else. Let me reiterate, though: combat in areas where sound will travel is a Bad Idea (TM). You'll have to run like hell afterwards.

Nah, don't worry 'bout it mate. Fair is fair. I'll stick with a Glock, a shotty, a combat knife and a riot baton. I don't think the Swiss Army Knife counts, unless I plan on uncorking some wine and tricking the zombies into getting drunk 'fore I blasty them. :D

Also, I'll have to veto the number of weapons. I've no problem with a FEW weapons, but everyone is already pretty loaded, so I'm imposing a ban: three weapons at most, or four if you can convince me that there's a balancing factor for it.

:D Oh time to go weapon shopping then! Would a pair of retractable katars count as one two weapons?

Yo know, the only flaw with people wanking off with all the melee weapons? While the sound may not carry, it means you gotta get closer to the zombies to slice 'em up. And since you gotta either hack off the head in one blow, or chop 'em up to pieces, you leave yourself close and vulnerable. A scratch, a bite, unprotected sex with one, leaves you open to Zombie Infection.

On the other hand, a firearm will kill 'em from a safer distance, often has splash damage, and looks cool. On the other wing of that, you **** off everyone around you. Damn, this sucks!

Why Not?
Name:Aaron Hawk

Age: 31

Hair Color: Brown

Eyes: Brown

Height: 5'11''

Weight: 172lbs

Skin Color: Tan

Build: Slightly Pudgy

Occupation: Protestant Minister

Demeanor: Flustered, Stressed, but Sincerely Concerned about Others

How He/She Survived: Since the Zombie Outbreak, Aaron has demonstrated a curious trait... invisibility to most zombies. Several times they have simply missed him. This seems to extend to people immediately next to him, but not much further. If Aaron creates too much noise or deliberately draws attention to himself, this protection fades.

Traits: Insightful, Protective

Advantages: Talented at Psychology, Can Read Human Emotions like a Book, Limited Survivalist Training (African Mission Trips), Curious "Invisibility" to Zombies when Calm, Experience with a Variety of Occult Traditions

Flaws: Will Go to Any Length for Someone in Need/No Concept of 'Lost Cause,' Distracted by the Search for his Missing Wife, No Real Combat Training

Backstory:

-Aaron & Bethany Hawk were high school sweethearts who married half-way through seminary. They both worked as International Missionaries, and spent a little over 5 years in Africa. Aaron was once "cursed" by a witch doctor, but earned the tribe's respect after surviving the bite of a poisonous spider.

Last year, Aaron & Bethany moved back to America to start a family (no children yet). They worked for a small church, and did a lot of volunteer work with the homeless.

Aaron & Bethany were working at a homeless shelter the night the zombie outbreak occurred. Aaron saw a particularly sickly homeless woman (actually a zombie) attack another resident. When Aaron intervened, the zombie clubbed Aaron violently, knocking him unconscious. Oddly, Aaron was not harmed any further, but awoke to immense carnage.

His wife was missing, but not among the bodies.

Aaron has been attempting to locate his wife since he awoke, and has even managed to protect a few other survivors (via his odd invisibility). After check the home of several of his church members, his home, and his church, he still doesn't have any leads on his wife. Aaron desperately hopes that his wife isn't among the living dead, but he will not leave the city until he knows for sure.

Items: 1983 Ford Pickup Truck (below average condition), Church Keys (including Food & Clothing Closet), Cell Phone (dead battery), Old Hardback Bible (KJV) w/ a lot of notes & commentary, Assorted Religious books, Cross Necklace, Old Photograph of Bethany (from Africa).

Game Preferences: "Discover the Source" / "Whatever Leads to a Good Story"

Since I'm a kind director and I've read the Zombie Survival Guide for a long time, I'll drop a hint: bludgeoning weapons and non-powder projectile weapons will be a good idea if I go with stupid zombies. Bikes and crossbows are your friends.

Meanwhile, if I run Project Moontan, which is a bit like Left 4 Dead on the highest difficulty level, don't worry about that, since the Zacks will be tracking you already, and go for the stuff that best downs a human.

If I run Highway Stars, though...I'll quote this guy:

We are on a D&D site and about half of us are playing nerds. We idolize the medieval and renaissance time periods, and when you romanticize those time periods you don't do it for the firearms or the bows, you do it for the swords and armor. Although my gut tells me that a renaissance era gun with a couple of modifications could be useful in a zombie invasion.

Slow zombies aren't really fit for campaigns on the move, really. If you see a normal zombie flick, the protagonists mostly hole up, which lets the zombie masses get to 'em. If you're moving like you should, ceiling to ceiling, creating decoys and stuff? The tension will be destroyed. That's why I tailormade the Zacks for each plot, so as to keep the tension high.

I'm open to suggestions though. If you have any ideas on how to keep slow zombies interesting while preparing a plot that promotes moving around, feel free to PM me.

Resident Evil doesn't offer you a plot with multiple branches, nor can you ask your director if you can take an option not on the list. Additionally, it takes place over a very, very short time period, of a few hours...while this game is likely to take place over a week or more. If you want an example of precisely WHY fast zombies are necessary for games on the move, look at RE4. How do you imagine that game would have worked with slow Zacks? Sure, you wouldn't have to content with Sherman Tank controls, but it would still be a DOOM clone.

Pretty much. Project Moontan's zombies are dumb, and take time to react, but they're rather persistent, and very dangerous. Here's an example.

Thriller Night's zombies are the ones who are braindead. Highway Stars zombies, meanwhile, are...dangerous. Fast, Intelligent, and really hungry.

Yep, but the characters that fight the horde die. It's the guys who run, run, and run some more who live. The Otaku and the blind man avoid combat for the most part and live, while the celebrities stay and die.

It's a Choose Your Own Adventure with a few RPG elements. I'll explain those when/if there's combat or a really important resolution. Basically, I'll take your traits, skills and flaws, and make stats for you using a special system of mine. Then, you'll be able to see them and can modify them a bit. Finally, you'll take turns taking one or two actions per turn until the Zacks are dead. Simple stuff, really, nothing fancy.

Current times, big metropolis (think New York, Buenos Aires, London, etc.), and don't care if something's anachronistic s'long as it isn't magic (supposedly magical trinkets are fine, but don't expect them to work every time or as intended, and they'll take a weapon slot), so swords, katars, and bows are fine, for instance.

Good morn...whoa.

Anyway, here's another survivor, a football manager:

Aris Papageorgakopoulos
Name: Aris Papageorgakopoulos
Age: 51
Hair Color: Grey
Eyes: Brown
Height: 5'9
Weight: 140 lbs.
Skin Color: Slightly tanned white
Build: Somewhat muscular.
Occupation: Football manager
Demeanor: Aris is in a very good shape for his age. Usually there's a slightly mocking smile on his face.
How He Survived: Aris was watching the local team playing a friendly match and taking notes when all hell broke loose:zombies got into the stadium! Granted, the referee probably deserved it, but still...Fortunately the stadium had next to no viewers. Aris ran as fast as he could and hid in the lockers room with a couple of others(thankfully, he was in a good starting position). Later, he managed to slip out.
Traits: Good planner, doesn't givew up easily, full of himself.
Advantages: Great organisational and planning skills, he doesn't panic easily, good in raising his team's morale, in a rather good shape.
Flaws: Somewhat quick to anger and disagreement. Full of himself. Awful driver.
Backstory: Aris Papageorgakopoulos is a Greek football manager who is well respected for his work in his country. After managing small clubs for years he managed to make his(mostly unknown 3 years ago) team one of the top 3 in the country and won a greek cup. Now that it's transfer season he visited Lionwhite in order to watch a young player for the local team who seems very promising.
Items: Aris is armed with a shovel he found, a whistle, 2 notebooks, 3 pens and a small camera.

Here's mine.

Ian Drake

Name: Ian Drake
Age: 17
Hair Color: Black
Eyes: Black
Height: 6' 1"
Weight: 175 lb.
Skin Color: Caucasian
Build: Lean

Occupation: Highschool Student
Demeanor: Kind, Protective, and Understanding.

How He Survived: Ian managed to grab a sturdy baseball bat, which he has been using to kill any zacks that attack him; he also has the help of his dog, Fenrir, a siberian husky. Though not a trained attack dog, Fenrir has shown that he is more than capable of protecting Ian several times over. For a while, Ian and Fenrir lived in an old trailer, which he had quickly reinforced with wood from the furniture. Unfortunatly, a group of Psychos drowve him out, and now, he and Fenrir scavange the streets for food, usually consisting of rats and other vermin, while they try to hide from the Zacks.

Traits: Quick, Good with Technology, Naive, Physically Weak, A.D.H.D., Looking for Brother.
Advantages: Quick, Superior Computer Skills, Good with Technology
Flaws: Naive, Below-Average Strength, A.D.H.D. (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder)

Backstory: Before the attack, Ian was your average high-school student; he was very skilled with computers, and had a similar knack for technology in general. However, physically, he wasn't much to look at. He was tall, but thin, almost like he'd been put through a taffy puller or something. This led to him being pushed around quite a bit in school. However, despite all of this, he has a very up-beat personality; even after the events of the last few days.

He had been living alone with his brother, Skyler, and their siberian husky, Fenrir. For a while, the three of them had travelled together, Ian with a baseball bat, and Skyler with a small pistol they'd kept in the house for self-defense. Unfortunatly, Skyler and Ian were later seperated during a Zack attack, and now, he and Fenrir wander the streets alone, searching for his brother.

Ian has several things with him, besides his clothing and baseball bat. He managed to scavange a good amount of tough leather from a western store, which he stitched into a form of underpadding; this provides a small amount of protection to his arms, hands, neck, face, legs, and feet, from the biting and clawing of the zombies. He also has his MP3 player, a relic from his past that happened to be in his pocket while he and Skyler fled their home, along with his headphones. He sometimes puts these on just before fighting zombies; when asked why, he claims that it makes him feel "cool," like he's an action hero with an awesome soundtrack.

Items: Wooden Baseball Bat, Fenrir (Siberian Husky), MP3 Player (with headphones), Clothing (Hoodie, T-Shirt, Jeans, Sneakers), Light Underpadding

They're kept in reserve until a climatic moment comes. You'll it when you see it. Trust me, there's a good reason for it. ;)

I assume that if I've a desire to participate that I need only post the 'sheet' here?

Cosette King

Name: Cosette King (originally Cosette LeRoi)
Age: 26, looks 40.
Hair Color: Foxtail, her hair was once dyed White, but the Mahogany roots have grown almost all the way back out.
Eyes: Hazel
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 190 lbs
Skin Color: Freckled Ivory
Build: Heavy Labor
Occupation: Coal Miner/Construction Worker
Demeanor: Confused, concerned, pessimistic

How She Survived: Cosette has been driving and refueling in a panicked two-step for so many days she can't count them. She doesn't know anything about the Zack, although running them over has worked pretty well. Driving south through the wilderness of northern quebec has isolated her from most zack attention, especially when the winters hit. She raided grocery stores, gas stations, and construction yards for food, fuel, and spare parts. She arrived in Lionwhite by chance (she really wasn't aiming for anything) when the truck finally coughed, sputtered, died, and drew the horde. Cosette had caught on enough by then to know she needed to beat feet. She snagged the CB radio from the truck along with the sledge, car battery, and a box of dynamite. Of course, her first attempt to hook the CB up to the car battery fried the damn thing. She's been laying low in a construction site, above the completed floors on the exposed frame work, raiding the city for supplies by rope.

Traits: Pragmatic, Overcompensator, Girlish, Self-Contradictory, Anxious
Advantages
-Personal: Tremendous Strength and Endurance, easy Camraderie, Mental Stability, Comfortable in the Dark, Calm under Pressure
-Training: Mining, Construction (infrastructure, joining and welding, air tools, hand tools, small heavy machinery, blasting), Brawling
Flaws: Indecisive, Isolophobia, No Gun Skills, Hot Temper

Backstory: Cosette was working in a mine (despite it being illegal) in northern quebec when the zacks came. She escaped after the lift failed and found that the work site devoid of people. Driving a company truck into town she found it also devoid of life, at least until she reached the town center, where the zacks had surrounded the historical fort from the colonial days. Inside survivors were fighting to keep them at back, but the truck's engine caught their attention. Someone from the fort must have realized, because the CB radio in the truck tuned in and told her to get the hell out of here. Without asking questions, she reversed and sped down the old roads. She drove for weeks, doing a nervous two-step of raiding and refueling. Gas stations, corner stores, anything that was on her way. She drove south as the winter approached, freezing the zake and making her travels easier. It didn't help that she had been rudely awakened nearly every night by that haunting moan or pounding fists. Cosette never aimed to end up in Lionwhite, she just did.

Items (Cosette is only carrying them all at once because she is 'moving'.
-Worn: Clothes: Construction boots (steel toe/shank), work jeans, knee pads, T-shirt (White), greaser leather jacket (scrounged, too loose), heavy work gloves, goggles, welding mask, hard hat, climbing harness.
-Attached to Harness: Caribiners!, sledge hammer, rope, fire axe
-Toolbox: Wrench, pliers, claw hammer, nails, hacksaw, replacement blades, knife, wire cutter, wire stripper, wire caps, measureing tape, spirit level, carpenter's square, pencils.
-Wooden Box: 8 Dynamite sticks, spool of wire fuse, a pillow, detonator, make-up compact, lotion, eyeliner, mascara, anti-wrinkle cream.

Looks fine. You'll have to wait until we make it out of the place we're currently in, though.

Or, alternatively, we could retcon one of our absent players out and put you in their place. What do you guys think?

Or thirdternatively, there's dynamite...

(that was, of course, humor)

If Heather dies do I start playing Zack?

For now, those who die will get another shot, as a different character. After a long enough while after we leave the institute, though, that chance will be gone, and people will only get a chance to try a new character if all of the party dies.

BTW, could anybody compile a list of character sheets for me? I'll probably need it soon, but I don't have enough time to look it up and keep up with the IC.

So I take no penalty for 2 shot, -2 for 4 shots...

Perhaps the roof would be a good place for Cosette to come in.

You'll have to sell me on it. Why would she be on the roof of an extremely elitist institute?

You'll have to sell me on it. Why would she be on the roof of an extremely elitist institute?

Well lets see...

A roof is a roof, no matter what the building is, so it's always safer than being on the ground. She's got to scavenge for food and supplies, and once a place gets either to barren or to zombietized it's time to abandon it and move on.

Fire escapes are mandatory on any high building. So she has a way up and down, and roofs have to be a lot safer than streets, even against climbing L4D zombies. Her prodigous strength and endurance would have helped her maintain a climb down-climb up routine for extended periods. Given her construction knowledge, she could roughly determine if a fire escape would hold her weight or if it was poorly built/old.

I don't know what buildings are adjacent to institute, or even on the same block, but if somewhere along the block there was a convenience store then she could have been going over the institute (or taking a break) when the gunshots summoned all the Zack. With the building surrounded, she couldn't very well use her fire escape to fire escape method (especially against zombies that can climb) and would be stuck there.

Oh! And furthermore, the roof access to most buildings automatically locks from the outside, so she wouldn't have been able to get in without making a racket.

I don't think she'd ever intentionally seek out the place, unless she'd thought beforehand that there were survivors there. But if she were just passing through I could totally see it.

Okay, that sounds plausible enough. I can see Cossette ending up trapped on the roof. We'll see what happens once the rest of the team gets up there.

I think some folks 'timed out' thinking they were waiting for a response. You might want to poll the remaining survivors to figure out what they want.

Maybe it's time to move on, making assumptions for non-responsive players?

Our characters are currently standing very still in order to avoid detection by the zombie hoards as we all know that they have eye sight like a t-rex.

So it didn't work so well then? Well, this would have been my character.

Name: Beaumont a.k.a. “Beefy” a.k.a. “B”
Age: 42
Hair Color: Long, Black, Wavy, Kept in a pony tail.
Eyes: Brown (almost black)
Height: 6’0”
Weight: 210
Skin Color: Olive complexion
Build: Beefy
Occupation: Drug Dealer
Demeanor: Self-confident, slightly sociopathic (motivated by self-preservation and gain), Short tempered, impulsive.

How He Survived: B was in business with some other individuals and a deal went bad. Because he owed them money he was hiding out. He has recently broken the cardinal rule and was getting high on his own supply. After a weeklong bender, he kicked all of the working girls and yes-men out of his backup pad and continued to use until he passed out in an almost comatose state. He remained in this state for 2 days while his body recuperated. When he woke up from his coma, the Zed’s had already done much of the damage.

Traits: Sociopathic (will not go back for anyone), respects strength and self-reliance,
Advantages: He will not think twice about killing an infected. He likes guns because of their motivational qualities and the fact that they “kill real good,” he is not trained in swordplay, but he owns a Thai Krhabi, used it once on a guys arm to make a point (he just doesn’t have it on him).
Flaws: Short Temper, somewhat manic, a bit of a junkie (though he hides it well, only a doc or a cop would probably tell and only under close scrutiny)

Backstory: B has been trying to make moves in the drug game. He still carries around the product he had with him when the apocalypse came down (1 Kilo of cocaine, Pharmaceutical grade amphetamine/200pills), and some of what he calls sleepy-time pills/142 pills). It is his contention that if society restarts there will still be a need for drugs. Before this all went down, he had been trying to get in on some deals as a go between the mob and some street hustlers. The hustlers, as is their nature, screwed him, drugged him, and skipped town. The mob has been looking for him to collect the 100 grand he owes, and will not leave with excuses. That was his problem before. He has no family that he’d care to meet or save. He has only paid for companionship, “dates for the night.” He has been in the game too long and was looking to become management. His last run was supposed to be his big break. In his mind this is the ultimate chance for a power grab. If he can survive, he is pretty sure he has the chops to be ruler of a post apocalyptic, he wants to run bartertown.
Items:
Weapons: He has two pistols, a .45 cal colt (silenced, red dot scope) which he refers to as “Pain” and a .50 Desert Ealgle stock military camo which he refers to as “Suffering.” He also has the fire axe from a box in the apartment building he walked out of.
Supplies: Carried in a Chrome ⁚ messenger bag. He has 10 clips for Pain (preloaded with ammo), He has 15 for Suffering (120/.45 cal ammo in clips, 90/.50 cal ammo in clips, and a box of and another 80 loose, not loaded in clips. He also has the aforementioned drugs, a stash of jerky, trail mix, bottled water and Gatorade, two walkie-talkies, an ipod with headphones and battery powered portable speakers.
Clothing: He wears black leather pants and a Black leather trench (never was very good about concealing his outlaw nature), he is wearing a designer Armani shirt that has seen better days, Motor cycle boots (also leather, not steel toe), a dewrag which he has fashioned into a sort of balaclava and a full face motorcycle helmet (not worn)
Transport: He is riding around on a Ducati monster.

I'm considering just running a second iteration this time, with less free choices and more Director intervention, to avoid this sort of stuff. If you want to play, I'll be happy to have you on board...though sociopathy isn't exactly not going back for people. That's pragmatism. :P
