Originally created by a Canadian, the 'able to leap tall buildings in a single bound' Super Man reminiscent of the Super man like tyrant from OUT OF THE SILENCE by Erle Cox which emerged during the same time frame evolved from the pro NAZI Super Man era into a near invulnerable flying Alien with a 'Moses' Background story Remake.

1. Was it a mistake to translate him into the Flag waving US farmboy/E.T.?
2. Are Superman's Ethics out of touch with the 'Torture and Murder are OK because we want 3. Revenge' American of this post 9/11 Era?
4. Who Is Superman?
5. Is he the interposing Hand of Peace or the Nationalistic Superweapon?
6. What are the Physics of his Powers?

All this and more.

5. Is he the interposing Hand of Peace or the Nationalistic Superweapon?

Yes.

These are not actually opposed, as "peace" is not the same thing as "justice," peace is just an enforced system of order. So the nationalistic superweapon can be used to enforce a hard-edge sense of order, which creates the peace of a well-run prison.

Superman was never a "pro NAZI Super Man". He was originally based on the same Nietzschean superman source which Hitler later distorted for his own twisted means. Indeed it was Hitler's distortion of the Nietzschean idea that caused them to rethink their earlier ideas about the character. Superman was essentially a personification of the Jewish history, experience and values, a mythic golem coupled with a circus strongman.

Superman was created by two people, not one. The artist of the duo - Joe Shuster - was born in Toronto but his family moved to Cleveland when he was a kid. Intersting fact: Joe Shuster based the original design of the Daily Planet building on Toronto Western Hospital, now sadly unrecognizable after years of modernization and renovation.

Based off his success, I would have to say "no".

2. Are Superman's Ethics out of touch with the 'Torture and Murder are OK because we want

Getting a little political there.

3. Revenge' American of this post 9/11 Era?

Not sure I understand the question.

4. Who Is Superman?

Superman is the man, Clark Kent is the disguise.

5. Is he the interposing Hand of Peace or the Nationalistic Superweapon?

False dilemma.

6. What are the Physics of his Powers?

Comic book physics have only a very tenuous connection to real-world physics.  That is, whatever way they try to explain his powers, it won't make sense when you think about it, and they'll probably explain it a new way in ten years anyway.

1. Was it a mistake to translate him into the Flag waving US farmboy/E.T.?

Not really, it's more original than what was originally planned, and a lot of people have been copying it since.

2. Are Superman's Ethics out of touch with the 'Torture and Murder are OK because we want Revenge' American of this post 9/11 Era?

No, it just means he actually has ethics.  Although he's lawful good and I'm chaotic good, I have to admire him for sticking to his guns when everyone else heads towards an apathetic neutral that tolerates lawful neutral folks that tolerate lawful evil folks.

4. Who Is Superman?

Superman is really Methodist farmboy Clark Kent, who occasionally dresses up as Superman.

5. Is he the interposing Hand of Peace or the Nationalistic Superweapon?

At the moment, both.  If America became a fascist state and proceeded to engage in truly unjust wars, Supes would probably say "not in my America!"  Granted, he'd probably say it a few months after Batman suicide bombed the White House, but I do disagree with Frank Miller's take on Supes in The Dark Knight Strikes Again (course, this was after he only became capable of drawing with his off hand because he clutches a royalty check in his favored hand as he shouts "WHORES WHORES WHORES!")  I do agree with having Supes would try to stop Bats from becoming the thug-mob-leading dictator of Gotham in The Dark Knight Returns (although I can't bring myself to agree with either one of them), but Supes is ultimately aware that Batman faked his heart attack, and he does not go after him.

6. What are the Physics of his Powers?

Everytime you bring physics into a comic book discussion, God kills a cat girl, so I won't answer this question.

... that sounds like a good reasion *to* answer the question.  I think super-density was mentioned at one point, as was unconcious use of telekinesis.

Every time I hear that doing something will cause god to kill a cat girl, I do it.  I do it as much as I can.  I think the whole telekinesis thing makes a lot of sense.  It could be used to explain his flight, strength, bullet resistance (think telekinetic shell or something), etc.  So maybe that's it.  It also could be that he is simply a manifestation of Physics itself or something.  And then there's physics.  Physics physics physics, Superman physics, physics physics.  Super physics physics, physics, man physics physics.

It's what they were running with for a while, as laid out through his half-clone Superboy who had a concious use of his telekinesis.  They pretty much used that to explain how Superman can pick up a car by the bumper and not have the bumper tear off, why he doesn't leave footprints in concrete if he walks while carrying heavy things, how he's able to catch Lois Lane while she's falling without tri-secting her, and so-on.

But they've had one of their "crisis" things since then, so no clue as to the current explanation.

Hmm.  I was never a fan of Superman, but I am a fan of that explanation.  It makes sense - at least as much sense as can be made when talkin' about somethin' like this, ya know?  Anyhoo, I'm just glad we keep sorta talkin' physics.  Cuz catgirls continue to die.

'course, I have no clue how they explain the heat beam vision.  I mean, when a guy's eyes have an "extra crispy" setting, things are getting pretty weird.  I'm really not sure if there's any explanation for that...  Heck, I think the current explanation for Cyclops (of X-Men fame) doing that trick is that he has a dimensional portal in his eyeballs that goes directly to a sun or something.  How that's kept in check by a small ruby visor, no clue, but there ya have it.

Have I mentione that comic book physics is weird?  I mean, take the cold breath, for example.  How the heck is that supposed to work?  When air goes into your body, it tends to approach your body temperature.  Even if you say he has super lungs and compresses the air, assumming it's not changing states (but getting more dense) shouldn't it be getting hotter (unless I'm mis-remembering my basic physics/chemistry...)?

Superman's entire body chemistry and physics is just senseless, really.  I mean, did you know that super-weaving is one of his canon super powers?

Weaving?  No way.

I like the portal to the sun thing.  I don't like the visor thing, though.  But I do think the portal to a sun thing could work for Superman.  See, he's got all that unconscious telekineticosity to keep the sun's harmful effects at bay behind those baby blues.  His eyes are blue, right?  Oh well, you get the idea.  Same shielding effect he uses to protect himself somehow keeps the sun from doin' sun like stuff until he releases the shield and uses the telekinetic powahs to focus it.  That's way more plausible than ruby goggles, IMO.

I wonder if we should keep a tally of the now departed cat girls?  May be fun ...

If you wish.  I'm just satisfied with a job well done.  Speaking of which, have you ever read "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex" [link]?  It's an... interesting... discussion.  Sorta.  Kinda funny 'cause you just know that comic book writers would just ignore the questin anyway, ya know?

Hrmph. Superman gains his powers because Kryptionians evolved under a red sun, not a yellow one. His powers are a physiological reaction to exposure to the yellow, rather than red, light. Also, his heat vision is a by production of not using all the power available to him and waste energy builds up in his eyes, which he can emit at will. That’s right, waste in his eyes. He poops heat out of his eyes. That's why we call him superman. All perfectly reasonable science.

Speaking of Superman, me and my wife have this on-going argument about whether or not Superman could be gay. My reasoning is that hes a guy, so if hes, you know, with another guy, well then yeah, hes gay. She says that since he's Kryptonian, a higher form of life, that if he was to get with Jimmy Olson it would be beastiality not homosexuality. Yes, this is the kind of stuff we ussualy argue about.

By that logic, there's only three people he could "get" with where it wouldn't be beastiality, and they're all related to him (heck, one is even a half-clone!)

Wait, What!? Its been awhile since Ive followed Superman, well any comic book really, but I thought he was supposed to be the last survivor of Krypton and all that? So who are the other 3? And what the hey is a Half-Clone? And any way if theyre all related, by my wife's reasoning it still wouldn't be gay, that would be incest.

You're kinda missing the point... Anyway, if I'm current on my DC-comics (I'm probably not) there's currently SuperBoy, who was dead last time I checked, but he's Superman's clone, but because of some contrivance they used half of someone else's DNA.  There's also Powergirl, who I believe is the old Supergirl, but I think there's also a current Supergirl who's distinct from Powergirl (the old Supergirl), but I get fuzzy about that.

Regardless, I don't know whether they blinked Supergirl back out of the continuity (that's why we have Powergirl being named Powergirl, though they eventually decided she was really the old Supergirl), and I think Superboy is dead, but the third Robin (who I think is currently... Red Robin?) was his best friend and a bit of a mad scientist it seems, so he might have gotten better?  Who knows.

Anyway, point is, you're missing the point.  If it would be bestiality for Superman to have sex with a human man, then it's still bestiality if he has sex with a human woman, as bestiality is based on species of the partner, not sex of the partner.  That said, why can't incest be homosexual?  It's kinda a label you tack on-top of whatever else you would call a sex act...

Not true at all - regardless of wich eras continuity line you wish to follow.

Right now there's supposedly somewhere around 200k(+/- a few) other living Kryptonians in the main-line DC universe.  Only a tiny fraction who've been "named" or even directly shown on the pages.  And of those there's only a few whom he's actually related to (the closest being his cousin Supergirl).
I didn't inlude clones, alternate universe Kryptonians, or Kryptonian animals {Krypto the dog, etc} in the count.
In addition?  Superman knows exactly where to find most of his fellow Kryptonians atm.

I havnt missed the point Escher, I believe me and you are on the same page regarding gay Superman, It's my other half who has odd ideas about Superman's sexuality.

But any way it seems Ive missed alot in the comics. Last I heard Supergirl died in Crisis on Infinite Earths, and was replaced with a shape changer from an alternate reality where Lex luthor was the good guy, and Superman was the last Kryptonian, I remember the Superboy clone but I thought he was cloned from some one else, I didnt realize that he had any of Supermans DNA.

I used to really keep up on all that stuff, but after Superman turned into 2 different people, Wolverine lost his adamantium, Spiderman became a clone, Bat-man turned into the Punisher, and Punisher turned black, I had enough.

Regardless.

lol, aptly put. Yes that is the way my wife sees it, Not me! let me make that clear!

The way she puts it, and i guess she has a point to a degree, is that if youre walkin down the road and come across a guy and a goat, you know, youre not going to check if its a boy goat or a girl goat, youre going to say oh you sick goat ******!

But any way this is getting way off topic, and possibly venturing into the realm of CoC violation.

Wether a human is alien to an alien is not germaine to a conversation about supermans sexual orientation to begin with. Having sexual relations with an opposite gender of your own species does not make you gay, it is a typical result of being gay. Your wife's reasoning does not prevent Superman from being gay, it only means he is unable to act on thoes urges.

Good point TA

I guess the way I see it if a humanoid male has "relations" with another humanoid male, then yeah, thats gay, and Superman is humanoid. I wouldn't consider that bestiality.
And I really didnt mean to get anything started here, Superman just reminds me of that argument with my wife, that were having right now even as I type this. Just thought it was funny, and thought others may find amusement in it as well. I honestly did not intend to start a debate on gay incestuous aliens who are into bestiality and/or bondage.

That's not a cat girl.  That's a hawt chick that made herself slightly less hawt by dressing up like a cat girl.  If it weren't for entry level yiffers lovin' them some cat girl drawings, hawt chicks wouldn't be tempted to do this and compromise their dignity for the attention of some sicko fetishists.  Cat girls make hawt chicks look slightly less hawt and, last I checked, that was a crime against humanity.  Anything that rids the world of these abominations is a good thing.  Even physics.
