| #1RustmonsterJan 22, 2009 13:05:24 | Hello everyone. In my local EB (Canadian equivilant to GameStop for you Americans), I have found a boxed set containing Diablo 1, Diablo 2, and an expansion thingy for Diablo 2 (and a strategy guide). It's about $45 (Canadian). I think it might be a neat buy, as my computer games currently suck (Nethack). Can anyone with experience with Diablo (epsecially Diablo 2) tell me if they think it's a worthy buy? Is it a fun game, even if it's mindless, time wasting fun, which is what I'm after? Thanks in advance. |
| #2batshidoJan 22, 2009 13:06:52 | It will eat your soul. I loved D2 (never played Diablo). It's a timesink, though. And it's got "just one more X" syndrome really bad. It's in my top 10 games ever played. |
| #3RustmonsterJan 22, 2009 13:08:56 | It will eat your soul. Awesome, sounds like EXACTLY what I want. Is it Nethack-hard though? (Read: Impossible?) |
| #4cherubaddonJan 22, 2009 13:09:13 | Weirdly enough, I never really got all that hooked up to Diablo 2... ... but cannot remember how many hours I spent playing Diablo 1. It's really old, but damn, that was a fine game. And all of my friends love Diablo 2, so I guess it can't be that bad either. However, it might be just me, but 45 bucks seems a lot, seeing how you could get it here (in Germany) for twenty, tops. Sure, there are tough bossfights, but overall, no, the games aren't too hard. Although in the second, you have the possibility of completely misbuilding your character if you don't know what you're doing. |
| #5RustmonsterJan 22, 2009 13:11:47 | However, it might be just me, but 45 bucks seems a lot, seeing how you could get it here (in Germany) for twenty, tops. That's because you Germans do not have a terrible, satanic game store like Electronics Boutique*. It's the only store near me though, so my only real choice. *I assume, at least. |
| #6Cpt_MichaJan 22, 2009 13:14:32 | Warning you now. Diablo is like crack. It nearly killed our Starcraft playing in our battlenet clan. :P Well Diablo II's expansion is anyway. |
| #7TouchfuzzyJan 22, 2009 13:41:54 | I never really got into Diablo... I played it... and it just bored me. (Oh, and just for the sake of pointing it out, we have EB's in the US as well... in fact, the store I always went to as a kid was an EB, until a Gamestop opened up in town... and then the EB became a Gamestop... considering the two companies merged...) |
| #8oxybeJan 22, 2009 13:55:07 | D2 has many aspect that eventually lead to WoW. multiplayer is limited to 8 if memory serves though. fun game for mindless hack-fest. got me through college at least :D fun fact: multi-shot lightning uniques are a to fight. that and the stupid ghosts that blast lightning bolts on the last few floors of Baal's level. especially in hell mode.durp durp durp... kablort! revive durp durp durp... kablort! revive ect... :P i only beat hell in multiplayer due to someone opening a portal at the final area XD. was a mighty fine barb though... if only i wasn't hacked. |
| #9rakeJan 22, 2009 14:05:02 | BUY IT. Install Diablo II. Ignore Diablo I. |
| #10aardwolfJan 22, 2009 14:12:01 | big time diablo and d2 fan, loved the expansion and cant wait for D3 :D well worth the money! |
| #11cherubaddonJan 22, 2009 14:22:09 | That's because you Germans do not have a terrible, satanic game store like Electronics Boutique*. It's the only store near me though, so my only real choice. Have you tried consulting the almighty Internet? |
| #12RustmonsterJan 22, 2009 14:40:39 | Have you tried consulting the almighty Internet? I don't have a credit card, nor the patience to wait for a package. And the internet has been cruel to me. I will not worship at it's feet! The first time you see Sonic the Hedgehog furry, you understand that there is no god. |
| #13cherubaddonJan 22, 2009 14:46:49 | The first two points, I can understand, seeing how they apply to me as well. But cruel? How? Is the Internet not the embodiment of all that is good, simplifying your life and easing long hours of boredom? |
| #14rakeJan 22, 2009 14:48:29 | Is the Internet not the embodiment of all that is good, simplifying your life and easing long hours of boredom? Must not... post... link to... tubgirl... ![]() |
| #15RustmonsterJan 22, 2009 14:50:17 | But cruel? How? Is the Internet not the embodiment of all that is good, simplifying your life and easing long hours of boredom? Yes, it does that. But it is also a wrathful entity. Loving, wrathful, it depends on it's mood. |
| #16zombie_babiesJan 22, 2009 14:51:59 | Must not... post... link to... tubgirl... Tubgirl is kid stuff. Hell, the last time I saw it my pal had the pic on his friggin' celly. He showed it to me at the bar. My reaction? Meh. If you want bad net stuff, One Guy One Cup is the new evil. ;) |
| #17rakeJan 22, 2009 14:56:18 | Tubgirl is kid stuff. Hell, the last time I saw it my pal had the pic on his friggin' celly. He showed it to me at the bar. My reaction? Meh. If you want bad net stuff, One Guy One Cup is the new evil. ;) I have so far evaded One Guy One Cup entirely. I assume it's a video, though. I have to say that videos are never quite as bad as images, because you can usually see where the video is going, and stop watching (as I did with Two Girls One Cup). You get tricked into clicking on tubgirl, though, and you're screwed. Tubgirl remains the only thing I've seen that's worse than goatse. |
| #18cherubaddonJan 22, 2009 15:04:06 | You see? Right there, the Internet makes long boring hours pass. No matter how gross those things might be, they appear to still be entertaining you, no? All right, you might be losing a few sanity points in the process, but I've never seen the point of those anyways. |

You get tricked into clicking on tubgirl, though, and you're screwed. It is a video. Were you to see it, you'd shut it off after about 1 sec. It starts terribly and ends worse. Awful. I'm generally a sucker for the awful stuff. I have managed to avoid Goatse and Lemon Party, though. I've also been able to stay away from beheadings. Maybe there is hope for me ... :P You see? Right there, the Internet makes long boring hours pass. No matter how gross those things might be, they appear to still be entertaining you, no? This is the right attitude. Kudos to you, sir. Kudos. :D |
| #20rakeJan 22, 2009 15:17:25 | ...wtf is Lemon Party? |
| #21zombie_babiesJan 22, 2009 15:19:49 | ...wtf is Lemon Party? From the description I've heard, it's three older gentleman engaging in some sort of sex act. You could always google it and see for yourself. ;) :P |
| #22batshidoJan 22, 2009 15:24:21 | This is the right attitude. Kudos to you, sir. Kudos. :D Just because you're reconciled yourself to losing all your SAN doesn't mean the rest of us are OK with it. |
| #23zombie_babiesJan 22, 2009 15:25:39 | Just because you're reconciled yourself to losing all your SAN doesn't mean the rest of us are OK with it. Don't worry. Once their gone, you'll not miss them at all! He he ha he ho ha he he ha ho ... |
| #24RustmonsterJan 22, 2009 15:29:05 | Okey, I need to catch a bus in a few minutes, so quickly: Does D2 have high graphic requirements? |
| #25rakeJan 22, 2009 15:31:41 | Okey, I need to catch a bus in a few minutes, so quickly: Does D2 have high graphic requirements? Nah, not really. |
| #26RustmonsterJan 22, 2009 15:32:02 | Nah, not really. Excellent, then I'm off! |
| #27MusicOfCreationJan 22, 2009 18:58:57 | I like the subtle references to Lemon Party in 30 Rock. Especially when Liz's dad says "It wouldn't be a Lemon party without old Dick." |
| #28boj0Jan 22, 2009 23:20:12 | Buy Diablo 2, then you can complain about Hammerdins with the rest of us twinked out WhirlyBarbs :D |
| #29RustmonsterJan 22, 2009 23:53:24 | UPDATE: My laptop can't properly run Diablo 1. Let's hope it does better with 2. |
| #30cherubaddonJan 23, 2009 7:55:19 | UPDATE: My laptop can't properly run Diablo 1. Let's hope it does better with 2. Eh? How come? @batshido: SAN points are like cursed swords: they're there, you don't want to give them up, they kind of work, and you can never get rid of them unless someone comes around to remove curse. And it is only then that you realize how much easier fighting gets without the -4 penalty. @ZB: Dude, looks like we've got some serious conversion work to do to rid our unseeing friends of their unnecessary baggage. Maybe we should start an online campaign or something... |
| #31ixien_kotharJan 23, 2009 13:41:49 | Diablo I is one of my favorite computer games. Diablo II on the other hand....(throws up in mouth, just a little bit). |
| #32toastedamphibianJan 23, 2009 19:26:31 | It says blizzard on the package. It will be quality. Might not be your cup of tea, but it won't be crap. |
| #33QubeJan 24, 2009 13:53:04 | Can anyone with experience with Diablo (epsecially Diablo 2) tell me if they think it's a worthy buy? Is it a fun game, even if it's mindless, time wasting fun, which is what I'm after? yes, yes, and if that last one is a question, yes. its a game I hold all other games in it's genre against. Loki? Diablo 2 was better ... Basically, thanks to the random treasure, you'll always want to go and kill the next Fallen, because last session, one of them dropped a green item (Seriously, my sorcerers killed a fallen, who dropped Hand of Death (gloves that makes you virtually immune to poison) Oi Andarial never stood a chance ... thanks to the fallen Fallen). |
| #34RustmonsterJan 24, 2009 13:59:06 | UPDATE: BY THE CLOCKWORK UNIVERSE! This is one of the best wastes of time I have ever had the chance to lose track of time while playing and end up staying up til 2 by complete accident. Definitly a great investment. HAHAHAHA! Go my skeleton minions! Kill things at random so that I may loot them! |
| #35aethelasJan 28, 2009 9:53:15 | Yeah. Fantastic game. I remember DI as having somewhat better...emotional effects. When you wandered around those dungeons, you were *scared*. DII is huge amounts of fun. It will in fact eat your life...gloriously. I have one friend who played it so much that he broke the CD so he'd stop. A few months later he bought it again...and after a few months broke the CD so he'd stop playing. He now has either his 3rd or 4th copy of Diablo II. I was never *quite* that bad....but it's really really fun. Damnit....talking about it is making me thing about picking it up again....nooooooo! I have no time! (working 50+ hours a week, in Masters classes, playing D&D, playing halo, and spending time with my fiancee = not a lot of time left over) |
| #36rakeJan 28, 2009 10:03:07 | *sigh* Yeah, this thread got me playing mine again, too. My pets kill things so far off-screen that I have to basically follow them around, picking up loot. I had a little trouble with Andariel, but so far my druid pets have effortlessly walked all over everything, including every other boss. |
| #37toastedamphibianJan 28, 2009 16:43:45 | yes, yes, and if that last one is a question, yes. I always seem to get uniques from barrels/baskets/urns ... |
| #38toastedamphibianJan 28, 2009 16:46:27 | Speaking of broken CD's A friend was at my house playing Diablo II with me. Then suddently, without warning, the cd drive door opened and spit out a hail of CD dirived shranel. Nealy nailed him in the face. Furtunatly for him he ducked and it just skimed the top of his head. Moral of the story: Watchout, the CD might attack you. I suggest you get Lord of Destruction and the newest patches so you dont have to use the CD. Lock it up where it cant get you. |
