Not quite as flippant answer: Seeing as red-hair itself is a genetic anomaly that is most prevalent when kept "in the family" so to speak, it's certainly not unthinkable that it's possible that a family/clan/tribe/whatever could have a set of genes assert dominance in most members of the tribe/clan/family/whatever. I mean, hell, if that's not how it worked then we wouldn't have red hair being as common among the Irish and Scottish as it is.

Not flippant answer: It's a big world that's millions of years old. Is it really so hard to believe that such an unlikely event happened once at some point? Face it, each and every one of us is incredibly unlikely. So many small miracles and events that, had they gone ever so slightly differently, none of us would be here. With each and every one of us a statistically unlikely miracle, is it such a stretch that another extremely unlikely event happened in the past?
