| #1boraxeMay 14, 2010 14:36:11 | My wife and I recently "discovered" Corner Gas, an absolutely awesome Canadian sit com that has, in very short order, become one of my favourites. We were well aware of the show during its run but never watched it cos, well, the vast majority of Canadian TV series - especially comedies - are utterly ing awful. Corner Gas, it turns out, is an exception. Funny, clever, sweet and stupid all in equal measure; a real gem. The down side of this is a full six years of quality TV enjoyment completely missed. The upside is we can now devour the whole thing on DVD in just a few sitting, not having to wait weeks, even months, for a new episiode. So are there any series you've come to late, discovering them after they're off the air? Are there any that you specifically avoided during first-run and are planning to check them out later on DVD? Do you find the upside outweighs the down? |
| #2EscherEnigmaMay 14, 2010 14:57:46 | So are there any series you've come to late, discovering them after they're off the air? Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, Eli Stone, Dr. Who, Dead Like Me, probably any of the other shows the SO has tried to get me to watch in the last two years. Are there any that you specifically avoided during first-run and are planning to check them out later on DVD? Avatar the Last Airbender, Rick & Steve, and though I started watching the current episodes of Glee1, I missed a whole bunch of the beginning so I'll probably pick that up on DVD once it comes out. Do you find the upside outweighs the down? Eh. I don't watch too much TV (of those shows, the only one that I looked into myself was Rick & Steve and now Glee, the rest were all chosen by the SO) myself and so never got cable at any of my last three places, so for years it was pretty much DVD or nothing. With Hulu now I'm watching a few current TV shows2, but I'm still likely to pick up the ones I actually like on DVD afterwards so I can enjoy the full run at my leisure. So I suppose I'd say "yes", but it's more of getting a full season all at once then "after they're off the air", and that's mostly so I can watch them at my leisure without worrying about technology giving me a deadline (even with a Tivo or some such you can only store so much, and with Hulu they only have so many of the episodes). ________ 1It's got angsty teens, angsty adults, camp comedy, a no-nonsense funny villain that still occasionally gives good advice, and music. It's right up my alley, really. I can't believe no one told me about this show back when it started. 2The afore-mentioned Glee, Modern Family, and, when I'm really bored, V. What? It's not a bad show, but thrillers aren't my thing. And the alien-human baby-thing just makes me oh-so-disappointed. |

Besides everything he said I will say I just started watching Supernatural about a month ago and have caught up to everything except last night's finale. I do love watching things on DVD (5 seasons in 1 month!). EE, I assume you've seen (and own) Doctor Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog. Also check out Castle if you haven't. Side note, I don't have cable and I don't like watching things on my computer if I can avoid it (cuts into my gaming time). Other shows I discovered "late": Whitest Kids you Know Stella Battlestar Galactica (the recent one) |
| #4EscherEnigmaMay 14, 2010 16:42:32 | I was going to post something, but then EE posted everything I was going to say almost show for show... There's someone else that's heard of Rick & Steve? |
| #5evilveganMay 14, 2010 16:55:04 | I was going to post something, but then EE posted everything I was going to say almost show for show... Almost show for show. That was the only one I hadn't seen. Judging by the rest of your post I will be looking for it tonight, however. Edit: Wikipedia is my friend. Show looks great. Probably going to try to download it now, before we go to the bar tonight. The wife and I are going to check out a drag show for her friend's birthday, so it should make a good segue... |
| #6Mad_JackMay 15, 2010 3:18:59 | I'm not huge on tv. The only shows I currently watch are CSI on Thursdays (and sometimes The Mentalist because it's on right afterward) and NCIS and NCIS-LA on Teusdays. I think in my whole life I've only ever watched about four or five episodes of tv shows on my computer - a couple episodes of CSI and two NCIS episodes that I missed when they originally aired. Most of the shows that I don't keep up with regularly or didn't catch the first time I usually catch in daytime reruns on cable, such as... NCIS - I was either working nights or watched another show at that time slot for the majority of the previous seasons after the first, although I've been able to catch most of last season and the current one... I've seen all but a handful of in reruns on USA Bones - I only ever watch it in reruns on TNT, usually whenever I've seen whichever old episode of NCIS or Law & Order is playing opposite it on USA CSI:NY - not even sure what night it's on... I catch it at random times on Spike The various Law & Order shows - just too f-ing many to watch, lol. But I've probably seen at least 80% of all the episodes from all the shows in reruns The Unit - never watched an original episode when it aired, but I've seen the whole first season and bits of the second now Star Trek: TNG, Voyager, DS9 - I don't really consider myself a Trekkie of any sort, despite having actually caught up on every episode of all three series while they were in constant reruns on Spike I tend to put the tv on in the afternoons and at night as background noise and to help me keep track of time while working on other projects, so most of the shows that have managed to catch my interest happened to be on in heavy rotation. |
| #7ADHadhMay 15, 2010 10:24:57 | House MD. I started watching it while it was alread in 3rd or 4th season. Most fans say that this is where the series starts being really interesting though. |
| #8CCSMay 16, 2010 1:31:40 | For the most part I haven't watched evening TV in almost 5 years. And well before that I didn't watch much evening TV anyways. It's a combination of work schedule, gaming, better things to be doing, or simply being home only on an evening with nothing but poo playing (yay for the DVD player!). Sometimes I've gotten lucky enough to see some things (like Eureka) late nite/re-broardcast/DVR. So yes, I've missed many things. And I've watched a good number of seasons of stuff on DVD. Right now I'm watching Deadwood (meh). And I'm waiting for Pacific & the new V to go to DVD. Some I rent. Many get borrowed (my friends & I buy seasons & pass them around amongst ourselves like a private library). A few I buy. |
| #9Dark_StrykeMay 16, 2010 2:20:36 | I got into House MD and Firefly late (the latter after it had already been cancelled). I don't watch much TV, mostly just what my friends recommend or lend me. A friend gave me the first season of Supernatural on DVD and I found I just couldn't get into it. My roommate got Band of Brothers on Blu-Ray for christmas, so I've been watching that with him. Normally military stuff isn't my thing but wow. This show is incredibly gritty and realistic (it's based on the accounts of surviving members of a WWII airborne company, and doesn't try to 'hollywood-ify' the story at all), but also very well written. The only show I'm actively watching right now is Castle, and even that I'm only watching online, since I don't have cable. I'd highly recommend this one. |
| #10Ragnar_LodbrokMay 16, 2010 20:38:39 | I started watching Firefly and Monty Python's Flying Circus fairly recently. |
| #11boraxeMay 17, 2010 7:54:48 | There's someone else that's heard of Rick & Steve? Why wouldn't anyone have heard of it? It was on several nights a week in Canada. I never got into it, though. The humour seemed really forced. I prefer stuff that's more character-driven and situational. |
| #12EscherEnigmaMay 17, 2010 13:00:56 | ... because until now the only people I'd ever met that had even heard of it were the people I made sit down and watch it? |
| #13evilveganMay 22, 2010 8:02:48 | ... because until now the only people I'd ever met that had even heard of it were the people I made sit down and watch it? I watched the first episode. I found it mildly amusing, but being straight I was a bit scared to laugh for fear of inivisble PC police jumping me. But seriously, some of the stuff was face-palm-worthy/groan worthy (reminiscent of South Park, which I like), but all in all I think I liked it. My wife, did not. Too many jokes in the Low-brow/D*ck & Fart genre. |
| #14LadyNeferRaMay 23, 2010 12:51:06 | I miss Good vs Evil, with Deacon Jones as the head of the department. Cancelled in the first season, and it had so much promise. |
| #15toastedamphibianMay 26, 2010 6:26:36 | I still miss Brimstone.... wait, why are we talking about this again? |
| #16IdolisMay 26, 2010 20:54:00 | I miss Charmed. I didn't watch it when it was Network TV but caught it TNT. My wife really loved the show and so I kinda got into it watching it with her. You know since they're showing Sex in City 2, you would think someone would have made Charmed a movie. |
| #17death_isthe_beginingMay 27, 2010 7:33:07 | I miss Charmed. They still show Charmed on TNT right after Angel at 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. |
| #18IdolisMay 27, 2010 12:48:22 | Oh cool, but I meant. I was saddened that the series ended. It was a good ending but the ending kinda made it where new Charmed Ones could come along. That's where a movie would be a good idea and they could restart the series with a new cast. |
| #19lairstonMay 30, 2010 17:02:46 | Dr. Who Good news. Its still going strong.It wasn't canceled. |
| #20EscherEnigmaMay 30, 2010 17:13:58 | True. However, I'm a few years back. I'm still in 2005 and at this rate, I should be caught up to 2010 by a bout... 2015? 2016? |
| #21evilveganMay 31, 2010 4:26:41 | No hurry, the new Dr Who season is pretty much garbage. Or at least garbage compared to the last few seasons. |
| #22Silverblade_The_EnchanterJun 01, 2010 15:19:46 | Try "Ultraviolet" nothing to do with the films it was a short run British TV series, very adult, not due to sex/violence, but because it was very much a "thinking man's" take on vampirism. Can be found on DVD ![]() |
