This thread is a simple test, to see how far off topic a discussion will go over the course of a week.

So, what do you folks think about the new story arc for OotS?

So far it has been very interesting and lots of fun. It certainly has lots of potential.

P.S. After all, I am a fan of desert stories.

well, the first setting we've had OOTS in "generic fantasy land", then OOTS in "Japanland", i'm crossing my fingers for OOTS in "Dark Sun"

Me too! My favourite setting!

I'd guess this would be more in the direction of Al-Qadim than Dark Sun.

Yeah, Dark Sun isn't a place you go, it's a unique world.  Lots of stuff wouldn't fit with a Dark Sun style desert in OotS.

i'm just imagining belkar + the cannibal halflings of athas and a "i'm home!" moment.

Well, then.  That would be damned entertaining. :D  I wonder if V would be as tasty as Athas elves are ...

speaking of V... would he choose defiler or preserver?

That's a good question.  Right now, I think V would choose Preserver in order to make amends for the whole sold its soul thing.  Still, V's so quick to fly off the handle and loathe to let anything oppose its will, it may just go with Defiler by default.

I think it'll be neat to see V choose 'male' or 'female' at some point, too. :D

I don't get that preserver/defiler stuff at all, but V was acting rather male recently.

i'm glad that Haley finally upgraded to new armor. i was sad that the kingdom which was holding her father was probably so short lived that they can't easily track that down. i'd rather see them try to arrange a jailbreak.

it has been really nice to see that Elan has become more developed and able to manage his attention span better.

i'll really miss the overwhelming V as the soul splices are gone. i really liked that spell, Familicide. that was pretty cool.

but overall, i'm kinda concerned with a few points about the rifts and gates in relation to Xykon. he doesn't seem to express the understanding of what is behind those rifts, but he knows that he wants to control one of the gates. with three gates destroyed and those rifts open and allowed to expand, what possible strength could his threat bring if he thinks to control a gate?

personally, it is beginning to look like a confirmed end of world event is approaching; the rifts are enlarging and would pose an even greater threat to the entire world than total warfare against Xykon. given the choice, i'd rather die in combat against him even if he controls a gate and threatens the world with that, than to live in fear of him using that gate to do something terrible. ultimately it appears that the unraveling of these rifts will occur even if he says that he controls a gate.

that said, why doesn't he form a new gate over an existing rift and then control that and make his threats against the world? "oh, i control this gate that holds back an unknowable evil chaos that threatens to unmake the world. you should all surrender to me thus preventing my anger from releasing said unknowable evil chaos!"

that just doesn't hold water for me. he has no basis for credibility. there is nothing that confirms the idea that if the world didn't surrender to his rule he would actually want to simply destroy the entire world, as that would include his soul. there is also no foundation upon which to trust that once placed in worldwide governance he might not just release chaos and destruction for his own fun amusement, however short that might be.

considering that the original efforts of the group were centered and focused on destroying Xykon, and that there is little indication that they could arrange to remake the gates which have been destroyed, it seems that he should still be the focus of their quest. V knows that his philactery is somewhere in the vanquished Azure City, why not return there to search for it? i suppose i don't actualy want to watch countless strips of insurgent activity against a hobgoblin city, but it would make more sense to take that course of action.

I was getting a male vibe, too, but as far as I know it's still not confirmed.

Certainly a hot strip...

Dantracker:

What makes you think Xykon could build a new gate, even if he wanted to?  And why would he want to?  He knows where two other gates are, he's not afraid of anyone, and as far as he's concerned it'd be easier to take one of the remaining gates then build a new one.

As for what he hopes to do with one if he gets it... well, he doesn't actually have all the facts.  If you read Start of Darkness you'd remember that Redcloak didn't give him all the information about this ritual that supposedly would let them weaponize a gate.  Xykon thinks that they'll be able to turn a gate into a weapon of unparalleled power.  Redcloak knows that the spell might instead unravel all of creation.

Why did no one go off topic on this? I put a disclaimer at the top a everything!

The answer is simple TMK, people care. They actually care about the topic so they talk about it instead of getting off-topic.

You gave up too soon, too.  It's only been six days, not yet a week.  Your over anxiousness doomed your experiment.

OT: I like the new arc.  I'm wondering if Belkar will get his act together before he gets netted, though.

The new arc is a definite improvement. The previous one got boring real fast.

As for the fight, I think that Belkar will get netted, and he'll be stuck in it at least for a little while, Roy and the others will A) free him or B) start to get beaten back, and then Belkar will bust out and kill everything.

thri-kreen? slavers? giant bug mounts? ambushing a caravan? in the desert? i'm still smelling "dark sun"-land

I don't wanna see Belky down for even a minute.  He suffered enough already from that stoopid Mark of Justice.  If he gets netted, maybe his kitty pal can scratch him out of the problem. :P

Yeah, I'll concede that it does indeed smell like DS now.  That's awesome, too.  Isn't DS the next CS for 4e?  If so, that may be why.

Maybe one of us should suggest that to The_Giant? It would be amusing...

That's one way to guarantee it won't happen.  For various reasons Burlew doesn't take suggestions for jokes or storylines, and has even said that he has, on occasion, changed something because people guessed it ahead of time.  Part of why he doesn't read speculation posts on his forums.
