DMG or The Annotated Elminster?

Apr 09, 2009 6:49:39 No, not which I should by, but which I should bring.

I've got Jury Duty tomorrow, and want to bring some reading material. I've got the List narrowed down to those two.

The DMG- I should spend serious time with it and read it cover to cover. I keep promising myself someday that I will.

Elminster book- While the DMG is a great read, it's not a story. I've had this book on my desk (along with three others!) that I have yet to read.

Any thoughts?

Apr 09, 2009 7:19:13 Shouldn't you be paying attention while you're there? If I was on trial and one of the jurors was sitting there reading a novel, I'd go 800 lb gorilla in half a heartbeat.

If it's jury selection, take the DMG. They'll think you're some sort of geek and they won't take you. There's an advantage to our hobby. People don't take us seriously in the real world, so sometimes you can hoist the geek flag and skate on by.

Apr 09, 2009 8:56:05 The 4e DMG is a good read. I read it almost completely cover to cover. I skipped Fallcrest. I plan to go back through and read it including Fallcrest this time.

The DMG keeps surprising me. I find it actually has more good information than previous editions. That being said, I don't know the Elminster book, so that could be more entertaining (especially since jury duty is likely going to be very boring).

A jury of your peers is the deciding force in many legal cases. The jury is chosen from random eligible people who are forced participate in the jury. Jury duty is an important part of the American legal system, and a responsibility that is rather boring.

One of the few requirements is that you can't have any prior knowledge of the case. So you can't be part of the jury for the trial of your friend the car thief.

Yeah, but I may not be selected for the jury pool. In the meantime, there's nothing to do but sit and wait.

Personally, I take a novel with me every time I have to serve (4 times called in the 10 years I've been eligible) and usually get through a good portion of it. Just don't take the novel if you have less than 100 or so pages...you don't want to finish it and be left with nothing to do but sit there...
