As a developer working on Digital Adventures iCharacter Sheet project, scheduled for release in the New Year, I thought I'd bring you some insider information on this exciting new product.  iCharacter Sheet 4e lets you take your favourite characters with you wherever you travel, and keeps all the character details at your fingertips at the gaming table.
  • Full screen character sheet, so you can see more at a glance;
  • Fully compatible with D&D 4e;
  • Stores multiple characters, allowing you to flip between them in an instant;
  • Email copies of your character to your friends or GM;
  • Really intuitive and easy to use;
  • A must-have accessory for your iPad.

I've included some pre-release screenshots, but watch out for the official launch in January 2011.

Have a great festive break,

It is a thaumatirugical device, providing faster-than-pigeon (FTP) communication and giving access to Forbidden Kowledge of the Sages (FKS).

While they're waiting for the iPad version to percolate through the system, my bosses are close to submitting the Mac version.  The iCharacter Sheet stuff was written to be multi-platform, and they expect iPad, Mac and (once the M$ App Store is running) Windows versions to work the same.

As a code monkey, I'm not privvy to exact timings but am just as keen as you guys to see this hit the streets.

BTW, while not yet announced I think there will be a free version with just about all the features but no save/email facilities.  *coughs* I only guess this because I was asked to write it...

The iCharacter Sheet - 4E product is now live for the iPad.  There is a free version (save and email functions disabled) for folks to test to see if they are interested, as well as the full version.

There will be an official press release, but not on this forum (promotion prohibited).

Thanks for the feedback and encouragement!

I tried out the free app. I'm not terribly impressed. Don't get me wrong, I like it but it seems rather primitive.

It feels like a computer app not an iPad app. There is no apparent use of gestures of any sort. Not even a swipe to the next page.
Even the scrolling is set up like you were clicking and dragging a scroll bar (push up to go down and down to go up)

There is no animatiion to it, pages don't turn or slide, text doesn't slide up (text jumps from one fixed line to the next)

I am also confused as to why the 1/2 level modifiers and ability modifiers are not filled in across the sheets.

I would prefer to get the 10-key keyboard when i am filling in numbers rather than the full qewrty that i have to switch to numbers each time.

Over all i don't see anything about it that is broken or unusable it could just use some polishing and tweaks to make it esier to use.
I must say I do like the symplicity of the sheet layouts, and I love the extra keyboard keys (tab forward, tab back, arrow keys, delete)

If there were a 3.5 version I would buy it (even with the quirks listed above) but I think i'll stick with my other app for 4th ed.

Thanks for your comments The_Tyger, I'm happy to expand a bit on the app and make a few other observations too.

We thought hard about taking advantage of the full iPad user interface, and it was a tough call, but we deliberately chose to keep it simple so that the same app could be offered across multiple platforms.  It was a fundamental design decision, and wasn't taken lightly, but we have this app working in-house on iPad, Mac and Windows devices (PCs and laptops), which we couldn't have achieved easily in any other way.

Where possible, we have taken advantage of some of the interface benefits of each platfrom (mouse-wheel and full keyboard for Windows PCs, multitouch/two-finger scrolling for iPad and Mac mousepad, etc), but generally the interface is consistent across the devices/operating systems.

We also stayed very strictly within the letter and spirit of the WotC GSL, and worked with them on this app.  That gave us only limited opportunity to automate anything (restricted to a few, straightforward totals), but other system licences allow greater automation.

What you do get however, IMHO, is a good-looking character sheet, with some neat functionality (like ENW campaign manager compatibility and the option to email high fidelity HTML character sheets to your friends/DM), for less than the cost of a pizza.

It is really important that folks get a chance to download and test-drive the app for free, and it won't be everyone's favourite, but I'd rather lose a potential customer than have an unhappy one ;)

On the subject of other game systems (such as 3.5), we are already in late development for another franchise, and there will be more to come later this year, so watch this space.

All the best

Although possibly necromancy...

The Mac version is proving troublesome (the copy-protection system presents some difficulties), but we have taken a good few steps forward with the Windows version.

As chief code monkey, I was tasked with developing some way to distribute the app without waiting for a MS App Store to appear, so I built a serial key system of our own.  The Windows version is therefore in late testing and I think we plan to release it on RPGNow and DriveThruRPG in the very near future...

Yay! The Windows version is now available!

If you don't have an eye-pad, you can still enjoy this app.

Enough necromancy on this thread: rest in peace.

*casts spell of Thread Necromancy*

Twelve months down the track and thought folks might like to know that version 2 has been launched, and now has rolling dice built into it.  If 4e isn't your thing, there is also a d20/3.5e version, and something for another game (its a troll lord thing).  A YouTube demo has been posted too.

The PC version for 4e is available here, for the eye-pad it is here, and for the Mac it is here.  Oh, and if you already have version 1, the upgrade is free!
