DnD video games?

Oct 28, 2010 10:24:21 Im looking for a tactical rpg that has similar mechanics. I finished Vandal Hearts: FoJ on 360 and would like something similar but deeper.

Im limiting myself to 360 and PC as I dont want to buy a new game system just to play a few games. Any suggestions?

PS - I picked up Record of Agarest War and want to shoot myself.

It doesnt have to actually related to DnD just have that similar turn-based, tactical game play.

I also remember trying an Icewind Dale game and the Temple of Elemental Evil game. They were both okay, but kind of lacking in different ways. The Temple of Elemental Evil game was terribly buggy and really short if I remember it correctly.

I'd say try the first Neverwinter Nights.

D&D Tactics on the PSP might be what you're looking for.

I know you're trying to limit it to 360 but I'd also highly recommend Neverwinter Nights. You buy the game, which is dirt cheap now, including the expansions (under $50 for the whole package), and you can play single player, which is okay, multiplayer on LAN, which is much more fun, or multiplayer on any number of "persistent worlds" out there. Think MMORPG except instead of getting one massive world you get hundreds of smaller user-created worlds that run the gamit from crap to incredibly complex and creative. Lots of choices, all searchable from the in-game interface. I've gotten 1000s of hours out of NWN since it came out many years ago and still play it today. It also has a DM client so you can run through the games with other players, acting as a DM and manipulating things on the fly, and a toolset to build your own worlds as well as zillions of community based resources to add to the game. Super customizable and fodder for endless adventures.

Temple of Elemental evil WAS terribly buggy but after a couple of Atari fixes and NUMEROUS fan fixes/additions from Circle of Eight www.co8.org it's the BEST turn-based simulation of DnD 3.5 rules on any game system, period. Single player only. Highly recommended, but check out the Co8 website for many fixes that are virtually required to make this game change from buggy chunk of crap to very bug-free and very awesome. Very opened ended and supports parties of any alignment. The replay value comes with the fact that once you've played it through you can play as a different party and alignment and get a lot of new quests and objectives, though it's still the same area and dungeons.

Added benefit: both of these games will play well on older PCs and still look great, IMO.

Its good to know that they patched it and fan fixes made the game more playable. I only played it around its original release, so there weren't too many patches out yet. Nov 02, 2010 13:03:51 You don't really find games that are turn-based anymore. Just like the few above and before, I also highly recommend Neverwinter Nights, Baldur's Gate, and Dragon Age : Origins. The pause-and-play system in these games is probably the closest you will get nowadays to a game like D&D. Also the play-by-post group Garic's City is always recruiting if you want to give that a try. Nice little group that I joined a bit ago. You could also try games like Fire Emblem but they are mostly Nintendo games, and i'm pretty sure they don't make PC or Xbox.

If you want a fantasy, turn-based strategy game I've always been partial to Lords of Magic myself.

DDO is an MMORPG, not a strategy game.

OP, have you tried Final Fantasy Tactics? It was originally released for the first Playstation, later ported to the PSP.
