| #1saintkeeleonOct 11, 2008 19:33:33 | Break someone's arms? I loaned some joker sixty bucks to put some gas in his pickup. I had it so I didn't mind. I don't ever loan out money that I'm worried about seeing again. He promised to pay me back Tuesday when he got paid. That was back in September. He finally came in to the store where I work yesterday and said that he still didn't have it. I gave an exaggerated shrug, and smiled at him and said, "Alrighty! I guess I'll just have to break your arms!" When he left I told him to have a good one and I'd see him next time he was in. Nothing different than ever. I would never, could never hurt someone else. I don't think I have the physical strength to do so, let alone the will. I do have an odd sense of humor and it manifests in strange ways. Like the aforementioned. He came in today and gave me my money back. I felt kinda bad. Most people, I would have thought, would have realized it was foolery and let it go. Has something like this ever happened to anyone else? Did you ever make a joke that someone took in a totally weird way? |

Did you ever make a joke that someone took in a totally weird way? more then once: I'm very cynical, and am prone to making remarks without thinking first, so sometimes I make comments that are comprehended as rude ... |
| #3tiwaztyrsfistOct 12, 2008 2:26:38 | Often. Apparently being quite and bookish makes people think you're a serial killer or something. "Oh crap, he seems quite and normal, he's probably a Cannibal!" Seriously though, I like to make supersillious suggestions, totally facetious things, and people take them seriously all the time. Because apparently they're all perfectly willing to believe that I would roll a canon into the buffet and set it off, just to prove a point. EDIT: I still think having the fattest and oldest men at the restaurant dress up in drag and go hang out at the competition's place would increase our business. |

| #5saintkeeleonOct 15, 2008 7:52:11 | All the time. You'll get used to it eventually. And if you're lucky, it'll keep away people that annoy you. Y'know, there's something to that. The people that laugh are the people worth knowing right? Perspective check: Complete. Thanks dude! |
| #6maulornOct 15, 2008 19:31:16 | Hmm... To me if someone steals money from me then it was well worth the price to really know that person... Needless to say I had someone towards the beginning of the year steal about $800... For a passing minuscule moment...seconds really...I thought about touching him with a AR... Anyhow I didn't worry about it. Moved on...made more money...didnt try to find him or anything. If there is one thing I have learned...Karma is a b**** No biggie |
| #7saintkeeleonOct 16, 2008 10:20:10 | My dad told me once that only sleazes and half wits borrow money. He told me to make loans wisely and stingily. He also told me once when I told him about a dude that owed me ten dollars, "Remember what I said about people that borrow money. You got him out of your life for ten bucks. That's all around not a bad deal." |

| #9yellowdingoOct 17, 2008 4:22:40 | Wow a Loanshark in the making...your future is set. In this business a smile is as good as a handgun.;) |
| #10saintkeeleonOct 17, 2008 8:11:06 | I'm not so sure you're not one of my uncles... *Laff!* That's awesome! I always wondered if it wasn't his brand of advice and good humor that made me what I am. It's good to see that others had the same sort of influence and turned out at least a bit similar. No chance I'm your uncle though unless you're an extremely intelligent two year old! ;) That's funny. I actually thought of that particular line of business once upon a time. I don't have the killer instinct for it. On the other hand, I could practice my smile in the mirror and give it a go! *Gives a dashing smile* Need some cash? :D |
| #11goblin_prideOct 17, 2008 12:55:32 | No chance I'm your uncle though unless you're an extremely intelligent two year old! ;) Was a joke, mate. My grandfather used to say the same thing. |
| #12saintkeeleonOct 18, 2008 8:16:33 | *grins* Yeah, just another sterling example of my odd humor. |
| #13wight_chocolateOct 18, 2008 8:39:12 | Yes, you do. But then I just assume that everyone resembles their choice of avatar. This isn't something you should feel bad about anyway. He said that he was going to pay the money back, so he should have paid the money back, and now he has, even if it was only because he took your joke the wrong way. |
| #14Mad_JackOct 18, 2008 23:24:58 | It may have been that the guy actually was feeling a bit guilty on some level about not having the cash, and you commenting on it pushed him from I-have-it-if-I-don't-go-to-the-pub-every-night-this-week to actually biting the bullet and forking over the cash. I'm a big fan of deadpan humor. So, of course, people are always taking things I say the wrong way. For some odd reason, I can say the most bizarre yeah-right-like-I'm-really-serious stuff and if I say it in an earnest, truthful tone of voice... people believe me... ![]() I mean, really, I could be smiling and laughing - even juggling and hopping on one foot - but if I say I'm going to kill someone, about fifty percent of the time people start getting nervous. Sometimes it gets to the point where I've considered carrying around a flip-book of common internet smileys to illustrate whether I'm serious or not during verbal coversations... ![]() On the other hand, most of the time I do kind of enjoy being able to mess with peoples' heads so easily. :D |
| #15saintkeeleonOct 19, 2008 8:23:14 | Yes, you do. Laff! Do I look like the kind of cat- erm person that would bite someone in half? Seriously? :D It's true that I was glad to see it. I spent it on holiday stuff. Candy and some stuff to put in my window and on my porch so that trick -or- treaters will come by. I'll have to get some more candy before Halloween, but I only ate two of the window clings. @Mad_Jack: My favorite thing to do is to crack wise with something that can be taken in several ways and then say in a flat voice, usually accompanied by a nod, "I'm joking". It's funny to watch them try to sort it out. |
| #161_ton_ghostOct 21, 2008 13:59:17 | "Neither a borrower or lender be." -Shakespeare Or, never let money come between friends. This is why I typically do not engage in card games at parties. Always turn ugly when $ is on the line. That and you're stuck playing cards, not carousing and having a good time. I'd rather make new friends than strategize ways to get their cash. "A fool and his money are soon parted." -Grandpa and like every other old wise man in history I'd wager. This is how a blue collar nobody could put 2 kids through college and still come out w/ like $25k in stock dividends yearly. Conversely, this sets the standard for the housing market nightmare too; idiots buy more than they coudl afford. That's as American as mom and apple pie though... As for your friend (?), it was obvious in the sarcasm. You were at work even, so why press for aggravated menacing (if you were serious) w/ plenty of witnesses around, some of whom could fire you. Few are that dumb. It was implied you were joking and not your cross to bear. If anything, he should be extra grateful for the leave you gave him thus far. Set that baggage down and let him carry it for a change...it's not like you didn't take him at face value and lend him cash in good faith. You're in the clear, don't let it eat you up. Reciprocity then if all else fails. |
