| #1gheishtMar 20, 2010 11:19:10 | Some odd questions, but I've been having very vivid dreams, and nightmares, recently for about seven months now. Usually any such dreams are vague, blurry images that I cannot remember upon waking. As of late though my dreams have become more intense and quite clear, with odd images and settings. I've been doing some research into the Dreamscape theories and such, and as my curiosity takes hold, I find myself wanting to hear the experiences of others. If you would indulge me? --- How do you feel about the dreamrealm, personally? Do you find it a place of relaxation, truth, perhaps even terror? How much stock do you put in such images? Has your life been altered by a dream or nightmare in the past, or were you able to overcome a personal challenge in reality based on the outcome of a dream or nightmare? Is the stuff of dreams just random images, blurred and distorted? Or set images that are quite clear and meaningful? Do you find dreams useful or simply a hindrance? An uplifting reward, or a terrible curse? |
| #2AbsintaMar 20, 2010 12:14:08 | I find dream interpretation a useful tool for analyzing my own thoughts and emotions that I may not otherwise realize I'm having, and I've had a few ESP experiences with dreams, as well as finding them an excellent source for creative inspiration. I wouldn't put it much higher than that, though. Sometimes it is just stress or illness messing with your brain. In general I feel better at times when I dream often and vividly, even if the dreams themselves are not particularly happy ones---but then I'm a chronic insomniac so any sleep is better than none. Lack of sleep is the real nightmare that leads to insanity, sometimes quite literally so in my case. |
| #3EscherEnigmaMar 20, 2010 12:24:01 | I'm a skeptic, so I tend to chalk people's claims of prophetic dreams up to perception bias and coicedence (namely, you're more likely to notice and remember when a dream comes true then all the other times that they don't). I suppose someone could work through some of their own issues in a dream-state, but the ability to influence, or predict, the outside world is something I'd be terribly suspicous of. That is to say, I have no reason to believe that the amount you can make accurate predictions in a dream is more then the sum of a randomly correct one and your ability to make an accurate prediction while awake. But as I said, I'm a skeptic. Your own experiences obviously vary. |
| #4zahkaryiiMar 20, 2010 12:28:06 | I too use dream interpretation in order to unravel the mysterious of the subconscious, though I always take everything with a grain of salt. Not all dream interpretation is accurate, let alone relevant, to every dream you may have. In general though I find my dreams to be my minds way of sorting out issues or problems I may not even know exist at the time. But, in order to be more specific: 1) I find the "dreamrealm" to be a highly personal experience, one that I share with only those whom I trust to take matters seriously. A retelling of a goofy dream is one thing; an intense, vivid nightmare of other events is quite another. 2) All of the above. Dreams & Nightmare are both at once; one and the same. They stem from the same source, so all feelings of emotion could leak through in terror for a light dream, or relaxation in a nightmare. A bit confusing, I know. Ha. 3) I put as much stock in those images as I feel is relevant to solving a problem grounded in reality, otherwise I ignore said images. 4) Yes, though that is a personal matter. I will share through a personal message if you wish, but not in full view of the public. 5) Often so yes, but that leads me to... 6) Often so yes, but see above (5)... 7) Both at once, quite often. The greatest hindrance can be the most useful at times, and in reverse as well. 8) Ha! A little over-dramatic, but I get the point. I'd say that dreams are more uplifting then a curse. |
| #5EscefMar 20, 2010 12:53:14 | I consider dreams to be a window into the workings of the mind. Which is why the often make little sense. I've had dreams in the past that had a person I knew in it that I'd have sworn was really in the dream too. Never bothered trying to find confirmation of it. I file such occurrences away as curiousities, and treat them as no more than such. |
| #6jinny_1909Mar 20, 2010 23:33:05 | "How do you feel about the dreamrealm, personally? Do you find it a place of relaxation, truth, perhaps even terror? How much stock do you put in such images?" Certainly not relaxation, but no longer terror. Since I've been having nightmares every night since I can remember I'm pretty used to it, but it's not relaxing. I don't remember ever waking up refreshed. As far as putting stock into them, I don't. Or at least, not too much. We do dream what we dream for a reason, whether because of diet or psychiatric problems. "Has your life been altered by a dream or nightmare in the past, or were you able to overcome a personal challenge in reality based on the outcome of a dream or nightmare? Is the stuff of dreams just random images, blurred and distorted? Or set images that are quite clear and meaningful? Do you find dreams useful or simply a hindrance? An uplifting reward, or a terrible curse?" I'm not entirely certain if my dreams just show what I really am and therefore allow me a view inside my twisted mind, or if there's something more to it. My first dream I can remember was when I was 4. My dreams are always insanely clear and vivid, and for a long time, were filled with terror and death. Every dream I can remember, someone has died. If I tell someone I dreamt about them, they ask if they died ^.^ I often wonder if my dreams are just showing the dark side of me, a side I've been running from, but that makes me wonder if I should embrace that side of me. Sounds dangerous. Either way, I've never had a happy dream, or what normal people consider a "dream" in general. Just nightmares. I don't think I've even found anyone else who's like me, always remembering each and every nightmare (or having only nightmares). It seems most people don't remember their dreams

| #7oxybeMar 21, 2010 10:54:50 | eh... i rarely dream but when i do my dreams are just that: my imagination running wild. i mean i barely remember the last dream i had (it was a few days ago). if anything, it was telling me i'm watching too much anime and reading too much manga since it was strait out of some slice-of-life shounen harem romantic comedy, though it was honestly entertaining in it's brevity. unless my next adversity is somehow regressing to high school-age and surviving the antics and shenanigans of a miko, a catgirl demon and a spunky sidekick who's high on pixie sticks, then the thing to do is go along with them and play the strait man to their antics, if going by what the protagonist in my dream was doing. then again, it could be telling me not to eat a deep-pan pizza and drink half a jug of cranberry cocktail while reading manga before bed. shrug. |

It seems most people don't remember their dreams Most people do not remember their dreams, though a good ritual is to repeat your dream out loud to yourself every morning after you wake up, and/or write it down as well. My girlfriend is of your dream-variety - she always remembers each and every dream/nightmare she has. It can be, as she says, quite a harrowing experience. |
| #9dragomMar 21, 2010 22:04:03 | Growing up every dream was a nightmare, but then I had an odd childhood. Since reaching maturity I don't have nightmares except for when I was recovering from a little break down. I've come to think that if your having a lot of nightmares maybe your in the wrong place for you. |
| #10zombie_babiesMar 22, 2010 11:53:55 | How do you feel about the dreamrealm, personally? The who? Do you find it a place of relaxation, truth, perhaps even terror? It's dreams, man. Dreams. How much stock do you put in such images? The bare minimum. They mean nearly nothing, really. Though occasionally I'll dream about something I'm feeling stressed about or drinking water when I'm hung over. Has your life been altered by a dream or nightmare in the past, or were you able to overcome a personal challenge in reality based on the outcome of a dream or nightmare? Yes, it has. I've had nightmares that woke me up during my sleep cycle. This makes me an unhappy camper in the morning. Is the stuff of dreams just random images, blurred and distorted? It can be. Or set images that are quite clear and meaningful? How about quite clear yet meaningless? I get those, too. Do you find dreams useful or simply a hindrance? They can be entertaining, I guess. And they can wake me up. That's a hindrance. An uplifting reward, or a terrible curse? A fact of life. |
| #11boraxeMar 22, 2010 13:19:54 | Dreams are you brain processing and sorting information. There is no "Dreamrealm", no spirits, no prophetic ability, no "past life" regression - no mysticism whatsoever. Dreams have no "meaning" beyond how the information thrown up relates to you, your experiences, and your mind, and all that dream analysis symbolism stuff (a snake = X, a cloud = Y, etc.) is complete and utter bull . |

| #13The-Mage-KingMar 22, 2010 13:30:56 | I feel that for the most part dreams are entirely things made of our imaginations, but sometimes they aren't... Let's just say that I have Deja Vu occasionally... |
| #14boraxeMar 22, 2010 14:31:53 | Let's just say that I have Deja Vu occasionally... Everyone has deja vu. It's simply a momentary neurological/perceptual anomaly. There is nothing remotely precognitive, mystical or supernatural about it and it is entirely unrelated to dreams and dreaming. |
| #15KillerGMMar 22, 2010 15:39:17 | I think dreams are a way of your mind to process all of the information that you receive every day. As infants, we have little to no "filter" for all the stimuli we are exposed to, and we develop that as we grow up. Your body is constantly receiving information that your brain analyzes and determines worth, and dreams are a way of "catching up" with all of that. IMO, they can have meaning, in that you are taking in information of which you are not aware. They can be prophetic, in that your body has picked up patterns and clues to future occurrances (or currently hidden actions) that you are not conscious of (such as someone disliking you, or losing your job). They can also be your brain trying to deal with a large amount of stress in your life, processing things as you sleep. Some people claim to have had their "great ideas" in dreams, which may be their brain operating in different ways than when awake. I believe that the sleeping mind can use the near-universal symbols as, well, symbols of things, because they have been ingrained in someone's mind through their culture. Though note I said near-universal, as I don't think that any symbol is actually universal. A dream guide (snake = X, cloud = Y) is really only useful if it correlates to the dreamer's culture. However, with the proliferation of different cultures, there is a better case for symbols becoming universal. So, yes, dreams can be prophetic and symbolic and helpful. I think the source of these things comes from internal reactions to unconsciously-notices cues from the waking world. |

I've been doing some research into the Dreamscape theories and such, and as my curiosity takes hold, I find myself wanting to hear the experiences of others. If you would indulge me? Yes-- I've been having strange dreams, too. It's weird-- it's like you can remember some of the highlights of your dreams, but the rest is like POOF!-- it's not there anymore... I kind of find dreams as very uplifting at times. You never know what happens... that's my opinion, anyways... How do you feel about the dreamrealm, personally? Eh... dreams are a strange phenom in the human's sub-conscious. I think it's something that needs a closer look into. Do you find it a place of relaxation, truth, perhaps even terror? Oh, yeah! Relaxing- Definintely; Truthful- sometimes; Terror- rarely How much stock do you put in such images? A lot of my dreams have been about adventuring and going to different places that I've either been to or places foreign to me... Sometimes I may have to do something specific, and other times I just wander around aimlessly. Has your life been altered by a dream or nightmare in the past, or were you able to overcome a personal challenge in reality based on the outcome of a dream or nightmare? Eh, my dreams have been very random, so it's hard to tell whether I've actually been affected by dreams or if I've had anything accomplished as a result of a dream. In truth... I've no clue. Is the stuff of dreams just random images, blurred and distorted? Or set images that are quite clear and meaningful? A lot of the times-- yes; however, some of the places I've visited in my dreams were very familiar. It just goes to show you how your memories are associated with your dreams-- which I have absolutely no clue how that works... Do you find dreams useful or simply a hindrance? An uplifting reward, or a terrible curse? Never a hindrance, I find dreams to be quite pleasent for me. Some dreams may curse me with everlasting images of something or things. |
| #18boraxeMar 23, 2010 8:12:04 | Because you said so it must be true.... No, because it's true I said so. |
| #19zahkaryiiMar 23, 2010 9:58:12 | So, yes, dreams can be prophetic and symbolic and helpful. I think the source of these things comes from internal reactions to unconsciously-notices cues from the waking world. A well said response, KillerGM. Quite true on many different levels. I use my dreams to help interpret information I may have missed in the waking world, and help me deal with future events as they come. A very useful tool in dealing with the anomalies of life, not to mention the other uses the Dream World carries with it. As a spiritual person myself I cannot speak for those who feel that the spiritual is nothing more then folly, and so I shan't. All I will say is that everyone is entitled to their own opinions and, so, we should not judge one another harshly or with contempt simply because we have differing views on a matter of personal interest. |
| #20zombie_babiesMar 23, 2010 10:30:14 | Actually, I think it's more a case of you're allowed to think me spiritually empty and I'm allowed to think you silly because, as I'm spriritually empty, my opinion can't mean anything to someone like you and, because you're silly, your opinion can't mean anything to someone like me. So it's all good. Or something. |
| #21zahkaryiiMar 23, 2010 10:31:57 | Touché. |
| #22jinny_1909Mar 24, 2010 1:40:03 | I don't think I've even found anyone else who's like me, always remembering each and every nightmare (or having only nightmares). It seems most people don't remember their dreams So what can it mean when the earliest dream you can remember involves you dragging a dead body through the forest? I was dragging a girl dressed in a white nightdress through a forest. She was covered in blood, as was I, and I stopped to wash up but when I looked up into the mirror, I saw her face staring back at me. I've been trying to figure out why I dream like this, why for as long as I can remember. rbdreamblog.blogspot.com/ I write the more exciting ones down sometimes. I can remember the details, they're always so clear. The smells, the emotions, the textures, the pain. |
