Popular dream myths.

I know that many myths surround dreams. I'd like to dispel some here.

MYTH 1). You cannot feel pain in a dream. This is incorrect. I once dreamed that a crocodile sprang up from the floor and bit me. It hurt, allot.

MYTH 2). You cannot read in a dream. Though not common I do read things in dreams now and then.

Any other myths, thoughts, or stuff?

I think #2 is perpetuated largely due to the fact that people often remember their dreams only in vague generalizations. Specific memories of the dream are often lost upon waking up, and reading is pretty specific. At least for me, when I read something, I can remember it in detail, and can conjure up the image of the writing later. This is contrary to the nature of the types of memories we take away from dreams.

I don't remember any time where I felt pain in a dream, but I do know that fear wakes me up, instantly. I don't have any nightmares because I don't stay asleep long enough for them to get started. Pain, likely, would have the same effect on me, so once again, the myth may be spread simply due to lack of memory.

I don't know if it is still making the rounds, but there used to be a belief that either you can't die in dreams, or that if you die in your dream, you die in real life. Being as I have died in my dreams many times, and I am reasonably sure I am still alive, this seems to be false.

Or are you? Maybe you did die. Perhaps you are a ghost and don't even realize it. Prove to me that you are alive!

Other BS dream myths:
• Dreaming in colour is rare.
• Items in dreams have universal symbolic meanings (Snakes=X, flying=Y, etc.)
• Sex in a dream causes one to ejaculate in one's sleep

From what I have heard a lot of older people dream in black and white. Now by older I mean people that grew up with black and white TV.

MYTH 2). You cannot read in a dream. Though not common I do read things in dreams now and then.

1) I can feel pain in dreams.

2) I remember reading words in dreams, I just don't usu. remember what I read.

Dying in dreams:
I don't remember dying in dreams. I remember almost dying, but I wake up before I actually die. Though it is possible to die because you think you're dead.

Dreaming in color:
I dream in color. I also think in color.

Universal Meanings:
Stop being silly. Dreams are just your subconcious thoughts.

Sexy Dreams:
I will not comment.

Well, of course! Black and white's all they had. Television, newspapers, books.

..those.. those color paintings from the Renaissance? Do overs.

I'm still wondering if that nightmare I had about lobsters was what turned me off from seafood.

Myth one is confirmed, I've dreamed of having pain inflicted on me, and wokeup STILL feeling the pain..

Also it we didn't feel anything while we dream we wouldn't have wet ones..

Once I dreamed the stuff in my bookcase fell on me. I woke up and it had. (Thank lawful goodness I only had stuffed animals on it...what? Can't a straight guy own plush pigs?)

I remember that once I dreamed that someone cut my head off. I bolted out of the bed after that with my heart pounding.

Once I dreamed the stuff in my bookcase fell on me. I woke up and it had. (Thank lawful goodness I only had stuffed animals on it...what? Can't a straight guy own plush pigs?)

Outside stimulus can intrude into dreams. I've had this happen a couple times with having to pee.

I tried calling in to work, telling them I couldn't make it because I was dead. Didn't work, so I must be sorta alive, at least.

Dreams can hurt. See Quori, page # of Eberron Campaign Setting.

'Nother myth: eating red meat makes you dream weirder.
Actually, they're weird anyway. You just wake up with the gastric stresses, keeping the dreams suspended in the subconscious. Or something.
