I don't know how many people on this part of the Wizards' boards play D20 Modern (or used to play it), but I was wondering:

Has anyone seen the anti 4e rhetoric on the modern board? Some of us suggested converting Modern to 4e, and were trying to come up with some houserules to do so, when we got jumped by flaming trolls.

Don't get me wrong, I;m not saying criticism makes someone a 4e hater. And there have certainly been some constructive moments (plus, recently a truce has been brokered by most parties). It just seems to me that the modern borad isn't safe for man or beast if they want to have anything to do with 4e.

Am I wrong? Or has anyone else noticed this as well?

Oh God...if we start running another Edition War we might need our own subforum...

I didn't wanna start one. I just wanted constructive advice about a 4e version of D20 Modern.

Unneccesary war is so sad.

Is D20 Modern anything like 3e? How 4e do you want to go? Do you want to switch all the way or do you want to get a hybrid?

D20 Modern is like the old 3.5, but Star Wars Saga Edition is widely considered to brindge part of the gap. If you use the Saga rules, it's more like 3.75

I would like to go full-on 4e though.

Use 1/2 level for everything such as attacks and skills. Have skill training be a flat +5 bonus instead of the normal system. Have spells be attacks that use the class' ability modifier that is used for DC. Instead of a DC that must be hit the caster instead attack a static defense. Defenses can be calculated the same way they are in 4e. You should use max hp per level or at least nobody can gain hp lower than half their hit dice. 0 level spells can be made into cantrips. Some level 1 and 2 spells can be made into at-wills and utilities quite easily. Most magical stuff should be made into encounter or daily powers, or into rituals. Put them at what ever level you feel is appropriate. Some spells would need to be reworded in order to fit into 4e rules. For non caster classes you can just give them 4e non caster powers. Give class feature bonuses. I suggest using the ones already in 4e. These are some of the basics. Once you've switched over the basic mechanics to a 4e system everything else like items and combat should fall in very easily.

Thanks for the advice. Much of it was common sense stuff; but after trying to go in-depth on a number of modern feats and things, a bare-bones outline was quite refreshing. Thanks again.

If you switch over the basic mechanics such as the attacking, hp, put in healing surges, skills and such then you can just use 4e feats.

I haven't seen any 4e feats that do the same things, effects wise, as double tap, burst fire, and other firearms feats.

Then find some that do similar things and modify them to fit what you need. I'm sure you can think of some slight modification that will give similar feats that right feel. If all else fails you can either try and convert a D20 Modern feat or just try and make a new 4e feat for your D20 Modern 4e homebrew.

That's what I've been trying to do (the conversion of Modern feats to 4e powers). That's actually what got me jumped in the modern boards, posting them with the desire for constructive feedback.

I could give you more help if I was familiar with the system. Since I ain't then I can't really help you out more than what I already have.

That's quite alright. As I said, your post about returning to the basic mechanics should give me something to work with while I take a break from the more specific and intensive stuff.
