So apparently EGM (Electronic Gaming Monthly) got canceled, so they decided to replace the remainder of their reader's subscriptions with copies of Maxim.
At least one mother is upset over her 12-year old son getting a copy of Maxim in the mail, especially since the notice to opt-out of this switch was delivered with the first issue of Maxim.
Anyway, I personally think this sounds like a rather poor judgement call on the part of whoever is in charge, and more then a bit skeevy on the company's part. A little amusing, sure, but it's quite understandable why someone that had an EGM subscription might not be happy with this at all.
So for most people really this is a non issue. *and yes I do know women that read Maxim... actually they read it more often than I do... go figure*

The option to opt out of a subscription is pretty much always sent with whatever default mag they decide on. As far as I know it's standard practice. And actually before this even, they had the option to Opt Out before they finally went out of business.
I remember reading about it in Game Informer and IGN, about how EGM customers could switch out their subscriptions early to a mag of their choice.
So really it's Mommy's fault for being lazy. or her kid's fault for not telling her.

Seriously, the standard answer for parents complaining about violent video games, movies, things on TV, etc. is "control what your kid watches. Don't let them do whatever they want, be a parent and not a door-mat".

I have a hard time feeling any sympathy when EGM made every effort already to give their customers advance warning. *shrugs*
It's not EGM nor Maxim's fault people ignore things like this especially when they reiterate the point months in advance of it happening.
I really don't know how much advance warning there was. The article I read made it sound like the first notice was with the replacement. I do not know if there were articles or discussions inside the last issues of EGM itself stating that the subscriptions were going to be replaced with Maxim, or how someone could cancel. Online only isn't enough (it was a print magazine) really, so I don't put much stock in you hearing about it on IGN or Game Informer.
I'm pretty sure if they heard about it, then EGM probably published it along with posting it on their website.
The article didn't specify Maxim that I read, however it did say you could replace it with a Subscription of your Choice before the magazine's final issue, and you would get your new subscription from that point on. They even gave the address, and phone numbers of the people you could contact in order to get it set up.
Then I saw it was EscherEnigma and I had to read again.

So, it seems that there was little warning. Not to mention that, if the mom has approved the magazine, why would she read every issue? That seems a bit ... over-controlling, even in the whole "protect your kid" kind of way. I mean, I let my child watch Word Word on PBS, but I'm not going to watch every episode, and if one of the episodes featured Sheep getting gunned-down by Pig, I'd be plenty ****** - it certainly wasn't what the show was presented as. Or, if it was suddenly replaced with Law and Order: SVU with little warning, I'd be annoyed. :P

I think it's dumb. It's probably a "great" marketing idea, but it's stupid. STUPID!! I don't care about marketing. I get enough of that BS justification for stupid ****.
