You underestimate the levels of stupidity that they can achieve.
The New York Stock Exchange should have a stupidity index. We need to be able to invest in stupidity. Investers could make billions off of such a comodity.

I'm counting on it. Job security and pay would be linked to job performance for all politicians. Think about it. Politician X proposes bill Y, and he claims it will reduce the national debt by Z amount. If it is shown to be false, he/she gets kicked out of office (no need to wait for his/her term to be up), loses his/her salary and benefits. That alone would be less wasted money on one idiot politician.
Imagine if this had been in place a few weeks ago when the two parties were playing around with the budget. They go in blaming each other. They screw around throwing accusations of the other party wanting the government to shut down. They finally get "serious" and make a deal. Both parties claiming they tried their best, but they could not get what they wanted. Still, they both claim to be saving a bunch of money. Turns out they were both full of it, and they only managed to save enough money to buy a cup of coffee... the cheap kind.
If a merit pay system was in place, we could have gotten rid of all those idiots. The next bunch of politicians that would come in would be on notice:
