Didn't they make wireless chargers a year or two ago that operated on that same idea?

A quick Google shows a number of companies doing this.

It is *very* well known.

"Well known" does not mean that everyone has heard of it.

I guess that it might be old news to someone working in a patent office

I am a tech nerd as well, and this crossed my blogosphere RSS feed a couple of years back. It has gotten to the point where they are looking into seeing if they can get it installed in pacemakers and the like. WOuld reduce the need for a battery back that the patient needs to wear, as ioppoosed to just being something that they cdould install in the bedroom or something like that. A quick Google search shows a number of things where you can do stuff like this. Currently mainly for iPhones and iPads.

There are stoves that use a similar type of technology as well. Inductive heating is the term for those stoves.

I guess that it might be old news to someone working in a patent office

If I worked in the electrical of mechanical divisions maybe. But this is purely a result of my love of gadgets.

The idea of inductive charging has been around for a while. Heck I have an inductive charger for my Wii remotes. You just set them on the charger (no connections) and they charge.

What they are talking about here is a little different. It uses the same principle, but they don't supply the base station for the inductive power. They are pulling it from all the EMF's being put out by things like radio stations, TV stations, Wi-Fi, and other EMF producing stuff. Basically its Nikola Tesla's 'free energy' for the modern age.

Do you have one of those USB rocket launchers?  I want one of those (and there is no real good reason why I don't own one yet)!!  ;)
