| #1oxybeFeb 26, 2009 9:15:19 | alright, yesterday we were doing the 2nd session of our "Epic-Mid-Game-Not-Even-Close-To-Finishing-This-Campaign" combat. and things are looking hairy for the heroes i'm going to sblock as it's pretty long and contains spoilers, since we're using the Savage Tide adventure path. session 1 we're currently on the Isle of Dread, waiting for eventual pirate attacks. the past sessions were spent getting the town ready with equipment & supplies, as well as gathering allies from the neighboring locals. my warlock also did trip to the mainland to gather supplies for the group, as well as work with a local mage on a less common item, the warlock's scepter (magic item compendium). i came back with enough time to spare and we got ready for the fight: catapults at chokepoints & on the shoreline, quaal's anchor token things (5), dust of dryness (5), and a few more items for the rest of the party. myself, the paladin & the fighter took some of the tokens and got in position to anchor the ships as they come into perfect catapult range. i was flying invisible over the water, the fighter had our trusty Cloak of the Manta & the pally had water breathing cast on him & some sort of water moving/breathing spell on his mount. when the boats came into position, i used my telepathy to help coordinate the anchoring of the ships to block entry into town. this forced the enemies to go into rowboats and into the bay (where we had our own ships ready to attack). after anchoring the ships, i started using our wand of darkness to stop the enemy ships from seeing the shore and attacking us. they got a few good hits before i managed to create a proper veil of darkness though (5 large ships to darkness will take a while). when the party saw the first globe of darkness pop up, they knew the ships were stalled and they started the real attack, harrying the bay with rocks, fire & arrows, as well as a strafing run by our own ship. the pally and the fighter (they were under water, remember) noticed that 4 flesh golems were dropped from one of the ships and were lumbering towards the shore. the 2 of them rushed to warn the party and prepared themselves for the threat. the last ship i found contained 5 yuan-ti, one of which was an obvious caster (it was casting fireball). after darknessing the ship we ended the session due to time |
| #2rakeFeb 26, 2009 13:11:40 | Is it just me or does the OTT lean moderately toward 3.5 players? Seems like oxbye and a lot of others play both. From what I can tell, Mage-King, myself, and Crossroads play 3.5 or mainly 3.5, I think. I'm kind of surprised. What's the ratio? I know Micha is a 4.0-er, and Bats is 4.0 or both. |
| #3dirtyfrankFeb 26, 2009 13:16:26 | I only play 4e at the moment and I prefer 4e. I will play 3e if a game opens up for me to join in my area. |
| #4oxybeFeb 26, 2009 14:10:20 | @ rake: it's Oxybe not Oxbye... sheesh... :P lol i do indeed play both myself weekly... well, i play all editions actually. we had a really kickass BECMI game going on for a while with Keep on the Borderlands, i actually remade one of the PCs for the 4th ed game. the end game combat... Show where the keep is attacked by one of the white dragons was epic in it's own right. i won't go into too many details as that's been a while and it's not so fresh in my memory, but it ended fairly quickly when the bard drank a potion of enlarge person & crit the dragon for 50+ damage somehow. needless to say that dragon was dead... and bisected. |
| #5pigknightFeb 26, 2009 19:22:20 | Based on Edition War statistics it's mostly 4e but about even still. |
| #6jamfalcon_the_gnomeFeb 26, 2009 19:27:00 | I've only ever played 3.5. Me and my group only got into D&D a few years ago, so we have no desire to change yet. |
| #7crossroads_wandererFeb 26, 2009 19:33:28 | You're right, I do play mainly 3.5. I really like 2e a lot, though, and if I could find a group around my area that played it, I would join. |
| #8dirtyfrankFeb 26, 2009 19:53:13 | You're right, I do play mainly 3.5. I really like 2e a lot, though, and if I could find a group around my area that played it, I would join. Join a 2e group or are you talking about a 4e group? |
| #9crossroads_wandererFeb 26, 2009 19:54:46 | I meant 2e. I'm not a fan of 4e. I don't actually have a lot of the 2e books, though, so I should probably get those before I really go searching for a 2e group. |
| #10dirtyfrankFeb 26, 2009 19:56:08 | I meant 2e. I'm not a fan of 4e. I don't actually have a lot of the 2e books, though, so I should probably get those before I really go searching for a 2e group. I still got my 2e core books. ![]() |
| #11crossroads_wandererFeb 26, 2009 20:10:55 | I have access to my dad's 2e core books, but I was referring to the extra sourcebooks for Forgotten Realms. Then again, I'm such a FR geek that in my household it has been deemed that I will DM all FR games because I know far more about it than anyone else. As to epic battles, I have plans for a campaign I'm working on, but I don't want to write anything here in case anyone stumbles across it. |
| #12dirtyfrankFeb 26, 2009 20:22:40 | I can put my stuff here on the forums because my players don't come here. ![]() |
| #13crossroads_wandererFeb 26, 2009 20:29:05 | I don't know. One of my little brothers has a username here, but just about never visits. I don't know whether my dad visits here either, but he's also probably not going to be able to play in the campaign. |
| #14pigknightFeb 26, 2009 20:35:48 | The Edition War is basically the same general plot as my campain. And a battle with an undead bunny atop a flating ziggurat is as epic as it gets. |
| #15minja_dupFeb 27, 2009 11:44:48 | Mostly 3.5 for me. Got the books. Like them. I have seen no compelling reason to change and invest. I was playing a 3.5 ranged rogue type and our group was fighting a hasty retreat from the burial tomb under a giant pyramid that was collapsing all around us. From the springing of the trap when I cut the cord around the sarcophagus to the last person out of the crumbling rubble into the desert sands we kept the same initiative. The battle occurred over a single 12 hour session and we played on one of those giant 4'x8' mega-mats. The map kept shifting as rooms collapsed, hallways became obstructed and debris appeared around us. Did I mention the never ending horde of skeletons that was in pursuit? We lost 1 character on our way to the tomb, and 3 on the way out. 4 survivors. It was EPIC and absolutely AWESOME. I was one of the survivors of course. ;) |
| #16dirtyfrankFeb 27, 2009 12:24:04 | Mostly 3.5 for me. Got the books. Like them. I have seen no compelling reason to change and invest. If you switch over to 4e then you'll be as cool as dirtyfrank. Is that compelling enough? :P |
| #17rakeFeb 27, 2009 12:28:58 | If you switch over to 4e then you'll be as cool as dirtyfrank. Is that compelling enough? :P It sure is! Compelling enough to stick with 3.5! *gunfingers!* Edition War thread, go!!! |
| #18oxybeFeb 27, 2009 13:00:15 | different strokes for different folks. i had enough reasons to switch over and i'm glad i did. i still play 3.5 actively, but my D&D flavor of choice is #4. |
