#1 Shiftkitty Dec 09, 2009 14:41:44	Particularly those that seem unrelated to the situation at hand, have you ever suddenly found yourself using a skill or talent that you never thought you'd need? For example, the lab I work at was in a building with several other labs and offices. As I left my lab for a delivery run, I heard someone down the way calling for help. She sounded confused. There was nobody else that I could see, so I headed in the direction of her voice, calling to her. The echoes were a little disorienting, but I eventually found a blind woman standing with one hand pressed against the wall in a side corridor. She told me she was trying to get to the pharmacy but the layout of the building was impossible for her to figure out. She had been tapping the wall to figure out where she was, but the curves in the hallways were too much for her to navigate. I explained to her that there were no curves in the hallways. The buiding was linear, straight north and south, with larger east and west hallways at either end and one very large one in the middle. Halfway between the large hallways were small corridors that ran only to the east. There were large planters at irregular spacing down the main north-south corridor with round cement trashcans at one end of each planter. She insisted that there were curves. That was when I realized the building's architecture was throwing her off. The walls were slightly slanted to evoke the image of ancient Central American buildings, as were the sides of the planters. Add to that a slight raised area in front of each office door, and I could see how someone without vision could think they were in a curving, twisting passageway. It was fortunate for the both of us that she had been able to see at one point in her life, so she had at least a point of reference as I described the building to her as we walked along to the pharmacy. After seeing her safely inside I left for my deliveries, realizing only afterwards that I had been using my skills as a dungeonmaster to describe a building that the listener couldn't see except for in her mind's eye.
