 Even crabs...

If I ever get stinking rich, I'm going to spend like $50 million to build a real mansion out of LEGOs.

it looks like to me that the crab already had a shell and they just built legos around it, which seems like it would just hamper the crabs movement, but admitily i know next to nothing about hermit crabs, so maybe what i think looks like a shell is actually some sort of soft membrane or something?

They built a lego house around a shell, and placed it in the tank with other shells.

Hermit crabs, unlike most crabs, don't grow their own shell. They have soft bodies, so they use discarded shells of other animals for shelter. A hermit crab changes shells many times during it's life. Sometimes it outgrows the shell it's been using, but other times it finds a shell that, apparently, it likes better for some reason known only to the crab.

I had a hermit crab in my fishtank that showed a distinct preference for brightly colored shells. If it had the choice between a drab shell and a bright one of about the same size when its current shell got too small, it would inevitably pick the bright one. I even saw it leave it's new shell and try to squeeze into colorful shells that were too small for it on more than one occasion.

Hermit crabs are weird.

What, you wouldn't want to have the pimpest shell in the whole ocean?

No, I mean a real fully-functional completely up-to-code 15- or 20-room mansion, not a playhouse with fake newspapers and a fake cat...
