| #2Cpt_MichaApr 21, 2010 12:33:20 | I have to admit I'm impressed. 0-60 in sub five seconds in a Five Thousand Pound Vehicle. |
| #3zombie_babiesApr 21, 2010 12:43:02 | Yeah, that thing is a luxury rocket. Too bad they limit it to 155. I'd like to see if it actually could hit that 190. If it can, that's really a helluva price for what you're getting. |
| #4Cpt_MichaApr 21, 2010 12:52:53 | If it can. I'm suspicious about it being able to personally. It's 5500 lbs. I bet they get it up to 60 using a high ratio like a 3.83 or something in the axle. It's lacking quite abit of horse power to get the job done, (doing rough math in my head) so they must be doing it with gearing which means it might top out at like 175. I mean hell a ZO6 tops out at 198. And weighs a whole Lot Less. And isn't short that much horse power. The ZO6 probably also has a much lower drag coefficient. |
| #5zombie_babiesApr 21, 2010 13:20:17 | True. It's probably a generous estimate. I bet someone tunes the thing to find out, though. ;) Still, for a luxury car it's pretty sweet. It can really move and you're not gonna lack for cushiness. Overall, I think they've got a real winner on their hands. |
| #6Cpt_MichaApr 21, 2010 13:27:55 | Oh, I agree it's the first Rolls Royce i'd buy post 1960s. |

The car is supposed to Electronically restrict to 160 right? But if it's also geared to 160 and that increases the performance, then why aren't cars geared to 100 as thats well over most speed limits anyway? |

Why not gear them all too 700 mph? In other words, gearing them to 100 makes no more sense than gearing them to 160 makes no more sense than gearing them to 700. In all cases they still allow you to break the law, which dictates what a safe speed on that stretch of road is. The limits dont stop you from breaking the law, endangering yourself, or endangering others. It's all pointless really. Capping it appeases people who go "Why do they even let them make cars that go that damn fast! Noone needs to go that fast! It's unconcenable!". Capping it high means your less likely to drive off people who go "I don't wnat to drive no **** ass car that can't even top one fidy!" Perhapes 160 is just the sweet spot on the propaganda spectrum. |

Because gearing to 100mph would mean sub 20 miles per gallon capability. Something like a 2.73 ratio is how my car got anywhere from 35-45 mpg freeway/highway driving. Gearing a car to only hit 100 would result in that same car getting -maybe- 20mpgs. When you gear the car to go through the revs too quickly (which is what gearing cars to only hit 100 would be doing. It'd be something like a 6:11 to 1 final drive ratio at minimum) it hampers everything, including Gas Mileage, Engine Life, Sound levels, and Emissions quality. The aforementioned ZO6 gets 30 mpgs on the highway mostly due to the gearing, and secondarily the phenominal technology that went into that engine design. To put it another way, if you drive a Big Damn SUV right now and you are complaining about 18mpgs. Imagine getting 10mpgs -highway driving-. THAT is why cars aren't geared to only hit 100. It's flat out innefficient, in every category. Hence why some cars are Electronically Governed rather than through gearing. It allows for the best of both worlds hypothetically, except of course that let's face it Cop cars are ***** slow, even if the car's goverened if it's powerful enough (read anything faster than a 1987 Camaro Z28, or Iroc) it can leave a cop car in the dust, governor or no. And even in a Getaway situation rarely do speeds exceed 150. So all it does is create an Extra Step that car manufacturers have to go through to take their car Racing on a Track. This Rolls Royce though tossed out having mpgs and top end speed (because let's face it the owners don't worry about those), to get it's impressive 0-60 time (which is more than adequate to not only get away from the cops, but enough to frankly break Line Of Sight with Contemptuous Ease) it sacrificed gear ratios on the Top Speed end of things because there is not now nor ever will be a situation where this car is going to be running on a Track. Also there are countries that aren't nearly as Prissy Knickered as the US of A when it comes to speed limits. And many of the vehicles sold here are also sold in other markets. |
| #10zombie_babiesApr 22, 2010 8:57:14 | Considering Rolls is an English Brand now owned by BMW - a German company - it's incredibly likely that this ride will see some Autobahn time. |
| #11ShiftkittyApr 22, 2010 9:20:46 | Well, this is awkward. As soon as I saw the picture I thought about how much it reminded me of a Chrysler. Still, damned if I'd say 'no' to one. It'd just look silly in my tiny little garage that can barely hold a Camaro. Seriously, I wouldn't buy one. Not here, not in this town. Our roads are in terrible shape (but gosh, don't our parks look great!) and cracked windshields are the norm. I won't pay 300K* for a car just to have some Jasper in a Chevy Luv kick up a chunk of road and put it right through my windshield or pit my paint until the car looks like it's got a bad case of acne. Maybe someday, in my version of Heaven, where the roads are all regularly maintained... *I know the article said the car costs 245K, but I want the version they tested. |
