I loved Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt, Super Mario Bros. 3, The Legend of Zelda, and Tecmo Bowl, but there was one game I could never get enough of. I could never find it for sale at a store, but the local grocery store had a rental copy of it: California Games.
I rented that game at least once a month for a year and a half. I was good at the BMX and rollerskating parts, OK at footbag and flying disk, and bad at skateboarding and surfing.
Another game that I always loved was Donkey Kong Country. The graphics were the prettiest I had ever seen. I just was never able to defeat King K. Rool, though.

I was really good with Mr. Grimm. I loved that character. He had a motorcycle and a sinister name. Badass.
And, IIRC*, he's the only one that Sweet Tooth doesn't kill at the end of story mode. Which just shows how much more awesome he is.*I haven't played this game in ten years, so my knowledge of the game is very spotty. Ah! I just remembered Watrhog. That one was fun to play, too. But not as much as Sweet Tooth. Honestly, Sweet Tooth is the coolest character in the game.
Second place goes to Super Mario Bros. 3. That game kick raccoon powered butt.
Otherwise it would be Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. I loved that game, and I'm actually (slowly) replaying it now.
On the computer, it would be Baldur's Gate. I think the reasoning is fairly obvious to those who visit this forum and are familiar with it.
Prince of Persia. I still dig it out every couple of years, load it up, and have some fun.
Battletoads 1 for the NES was really fun, but waaaay to impossible.

Dragon Warrior! I can't really find the words for what that game is to me. I think it could have something to do with the reason I draw breath. It's the standard to which all other games have been held and subsequently brushed aside.
The others in the series aren't bad either, but that was the best.
For a fight game, I really liked Eternal Champions and KI. Good stuff.

The original Legend of Zelda. Not only was it one of the first video games I ever played, but my earliest memories of my life are me playing that game with my family when I was 3.
My favrite vold school game might be Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, but it might Also be Final Fantasy 6 (Back when it was 3).
As for the original NES, Super Mario Bros 3 was king for me. 8 full worlds each with at least a dozen boards to play with, a slew of items and all the trouble you went through to get them, just to realize that you couldn't bear to use them because of how hard you worked to get them. Remember getting the Hammer Brothers outfit? There was like one in the game and you had to beat 3 boards to get it, buut it was just so cool it was worth it. Reading strategy guides and Nintendo Powers.... wow so nostalgic...
I mean back in the day that game was just so HUGE! All those places you can go, half the time there wasn't a set path to take so you could skip levels, or you can go to extra ones if you wanted to pick up some items...
In fact I might just have to give it the award for best old school game after all. I can't forgive Ocarina of time for introducing...fishing.

It's illegal to LARP in most public places in Kansas. There are quite a few groups here and there (mostly sponsored and private), but many have fallen into disarray from lack of players (especially the one in Lawrence, which I wanted to try
). I really can't afford to drive out to Wichita or Topeka just for a few hours of LARPing. :SNot too many in Germany, I'm afraid, unless you're talking Harry Potter LARPing.

What made it have such great replay value was the random levels/presents. It was never the same game twice.

Sonic Adventure 2 was actually pretty good, except for the treasure hunting levels. The mech levels were kind of hit or miss, and the Sonic/Shadow levels were usually pretty awesome (my favorite was probably Radical Highway). Most Sonic games since have been downright awful. There is some light in the darkness, though. I'm told Sonic Chronicles is actually pretty good, but it was developed by Bioware, not Sonic Team. Sonic Battle was also pretty fun, but a few of Shadow's moves were kind of broken.
I am shocked and appalled. Not all 71 of my previous respondents were Chrono Trigger. Have you guys not played it or something? Whats wrong with you people? Chrono Trigger changed my life. Twice.

Favorite old school game? Probably Sonic the Hedgehog 3 + Knuckles. Doomsday Zone is one of my favorite boss fights in videogame history.

I'm glad that they gave Shadow his own set of abilities in Sonic Battle and Sonic Chronicles. He was a flatter character when all he really had were the exact same powers as Sonic (actually, less in Sonic Adventure 2. Sonic gets the Magic Glove and the Bounce Attack, and Shadow gets no equivalent ability). In Sonic Battle, Shadow actually fights in a radically different manner from Sonic. Check it out (It's Shadow versus Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails. The player takes a beating early on, but makes a comeback). I actually prefer to think of Shadow as someone with a different skillset from Sonic, but still strong enough to fight him one on one (their big showdown at the end of the Hero/Dark stories in SA2 was epic).
I know some people dislike him, but he's actually one of my favorite characters in the series. His personal game was kind of terrible, though. The gunplay really shouldn't have been added, and none of the levels felt as fun as say, Radical Highway or White Jungle.
There are people who dislike Shadow? He's one of the best characters in the series!

-So many good years of my life. I was one of the first three people in my school to acknowledge the RPG phenomena, largely due to Final Fantasy (oh yeah!!!). Pirates was another great game on that system.
SNES:
-Final Fantasy 2 & 3 (I do not acknowledge the 'Japanese' numbering to this day b/c of the fond memories of these games), Chrono Trigger, Breath of Fire 2, TMNT: Turtles in Time, Super Metroid
Sega:
-During the Sega/SNES wars, I sided mostly w/ SEGA, despite the # of great games on the SNES. My favorites included Shining Force 1 & 2, Rings of Power, and one of the NHL hockey games... not sure which one. However, the hands-down favorite: Starflight (thanks for the earlier shout-out Webster).
Playstation:
-I was a late arrival to the PS1 world, but it shouldn't be a surprise that one of my first (and favorite) games was Final Fantasy 7. (Until FF12, it was the last one I truly enjoyed.) Resident Evil was a great game. However, my favorite PS1 RPG was hands-down Suidoken. I almost fried my PS1 the first time I played that game (b/c of how long I was on the system).
Other systems:
-I stepped out of hardcore video gaming after the PS1 (that's when I discovered my first d20 sourcebook), but there have been a few favorites. Soul Caliber 2 (rock on Heihachi). Eternal Darkness was great! I've also pulled out several old Heroes of Might & Magic games for my PC. All very nice.

Funny how that is.
Was avid in paintball for a while too. All those rigs can cost as much as, if not more than real firearms and ammo. Kendo and fencing wasn't exactly easy on my wallet either. The financial pain is equally as real as the physical.
Not that gaming isn't an expensive hobby either...
Also Dragon Warrior for the Nintendo, think that might be the first RPG I every played and what lead to me getting into D&D. I would tell you my first character's name but it would most likely get bleeped, lets just say a slang term for it is beaver. Luckily I have gotten better at the naming part over the years.
Getting more modern I would have to say that the Armored Core games for PS1, PS2 and PSP are my over all favorite console games.
Best game for PSP being Final Fantasy Tactics, better than the original.
