| #1torynMar 17, 2009 14:21:29 | What is your favorite FF game? I have played most of the ones up to FFX (minus the ones for original Gameboy and Mystic Quest (never cared for it)for SNES), and my favorite is Final Fantasy 6 (Final Fantasy 3 for SNES). They remade it for the GBA (pretty much the same, music is redone, some dialog is modified, and some other minor changes) as well. To me, it had one of the best stories, as well as some of the best characters. My favorite characters were Shadow, Cyan and Celes. Cyan is awesome with a genji glove and the relic that doubles your attacks. Auron from FFX was cool as well. I didn't really care for FF8 for the Playstation. FF7 and FF9 were cool though. |
| #2Cpt_MichaMar 17, 2009 14:26:44 | Tactics for the Ps1. Second fav. Final Fantasy Third Final Fantasy II |
| #3ForgemberMar 17, 2009 14:30:06 | Tactics for the PSP |
| #4rakeMar 17, 2009 14:30:44 | Tough one to call. If we're including Tactics, I'll have to jump on Micha's wagon for the awesome gameplay, but even then it's hard for me to choose anything over ff3. I did love ff7, too (was heartbroken when Aerith died), but ff3 had the best characters and the best sense of humor in the series. I miss having adventures with Cyan and Locke. Ahh, nostalgia. |
| #5jhonesyMar 17, 2009 14:31:07 | Final Fantasy III. :D I'm not a fan of the "current" FF's, too flashy, too emo and too completely unlike the original goodness that made me love 'em. |
| #6torynMar 17, 2009 14:39:24 | My brother loves the newer ones, but I can't get into them. The GBA remakes of FF3 and FF 1 & 2 were good as well. I haven't played the remakes of FF4, I am still looking for a copy. |
| #7cherubaddonMar 17, 2009 14:41:05 | Never played any of them - I missed the Golden Age of console gaming - but I do love VII (I think) for One Winged Angel. That is just of a seldom-seen kind of awesome. |
| #8ciaranMar 17, 2009 14:54:19 | FF3 is the only one I really played. It was fun. |
| #9Lord_VentnorMar 17, 2009 15:20:02 | My personal favorite is the FF1 remake for the GBA. I've played and replayed it quite a few times. Even did a solo run once with a Red Mage. (That was fun). |
| #10jhonesyMar 17, 2009 15:22:24 | *snip* ... Even did a solo run once with a Red Mage. Red Mage 4 Teh Wyn! :D |
| #11pigknightMar 17, 2009 21:25:37 | Crystal Chronicles |
| #12skyodinMar 17, 2009 21:43:39 | I simply have too much nostalgia for Final Fantasy 6 (Final Fantasy 3 when I first bought it) to not pick it as my favorite. Final Fantasy 4 is not far behind, as it was the game that turned me into the hardcore RPG fan I am today, and the game that made me make my first D&D character a Paladin. Past that, I have trouble coming up with a cohesive list, since most Final Fantasy games have something really unique going for them. Tactics has the single best implementation of the Job system to date in the series. VII is Final Fantasy VII, what more is there to say? X has one of the most well-built and coherent worlds of the entire series. X-2 is in competition with Tactics for best implementation of the Job system. Final Fantasy VIII was flawed is some ways, but was innovative and had some strong characters. IX was just plain fun, and had my favorite FF minigame of all time: Chocobo Hot and Cold. V was all around solid, with the best final dungeon of the entire series. III has some surprisingly emotionally powerful moments. There are only two Final Fantasy games that I will actually say are bad: Final Fantasy II, because of the atrocious "level up abilities by using them" system makes it very hard to play, and Final Fantasy XII, because it's characters and plot are severely lacking and has boring gameplay. Final Fantasy XI is the only one I haven't played, since I am not a big MMO gamer. Some of the stuff I have read about it actually sounds kinda cool. |
| #13MusicOfCreationMar 17, 2009 23:03:22 | IMO Final Fantasy 7 is hands down the best. Final Fantasy 4 and the original Final Fantasy both come in 2nd and 3rd respectively. Final Fantasy 6 is severely overrated but a decent game. Final Fantasy 2 is an example of man's inhumanity to man and is the videogame equivalent of Return of the Living Dead 4/5 and the Garbage Pail Kids movie. |
| #14CrackerjakeMar 17, 2009 23:14:16 | Final Fantasy VIII I don't know why, I just do. |
| #15crimson_lancerMar 17, 2009 23:34:08 | I love 6, but I've beaten it so many times now that I just don't even need to play it anymore to enjoy it; it's pretty much just locked into my skull, and I can replay it in my sleep. ![]() It's a toss-up between Tactics (I still have my PS1 version sitting on my desk, right next to my copy of Xenogears and the original Super Smash Bros! :D) and FF9. Actually, I'd say 9, because my personal problem with Tactics is that I end up spending far more time just putting effort into character versions of my friends and the like than I do actually playing through the storyline (though it is admittedly an excellent storyline). Also, the PS1 version is, IMO, better than the PSP one; even though I love the language, they took out the whole, "Announce your spells and powers before you destroy your enemies!" thing, and I loved that so much. It was simply stupendous pretty much every time. ![]() 9 is at the top because of the mini-games (the card game was the best one ever, and yes, Chocobo Hot and Cold was amazingly fun every single time!), the fact that you couldn't just make everyone a clone of everyone else, indispensable characters (though admittedly a bit over-the-top at times), the storyline was amazing, the CGI scenes completely made up for the "kiddy" look of the characters, a Final Boss that was an actual challenge and had only one form (though he, too, was kind of cheesy), and an ending that worked. Also, ARC, BABY!! ![]() |
| #16disciple_of_juiblexMar 17, 2009 23:41:57 | FF6 is one of the few games that once i beat i can go back through an enjoy. many Interesting if somewhat sterotypical characters that have some sort of quirk that makes them stand out. And kefka is one of the few villians that i truely hated. I cannot, CANNOT, stand FF7. The magic system felt weird, the characters where boring as heck, and the plot... Oh my the plot was an abomination. "oh poor me, im a clone of a clone, of a clone, of the spirit of the earth. and the bad guys another clone thing." I had to force my way to play to the end just so i could talk to peaple that i knew about how bad it is. I honeslty havent played a single new final fantasy after seven, as all i hear is how bad they are, exept for the one about the dreamed up sports star and that just sounds dumb. |
| #17crimson_lancerMar 17, 2009 23:44:37 | Play 9. No emo main character and it's much more reminiscent of the "Old Skool" style of FF. People just don't like the graphics. ![]() |
| #18MusicOfCreationMar 18, 2009 0:00:01 | Kefka was such a lame joke of a villain. It would be like if instead of casting Heath Ledger for the Joker in the Dark Knight they cast Paulie Shore instead. |
| #19crimson_lancerMar 18, 2009 0:11:07 | Kefka was such a lame joke of a villain. It would be like if instead of casting Heath Ledger for the Joker in the Dark Knight they cast Paulie Shore instead. Paulie Shore would never have the balls to blow up the world on a whim. Kefka was a freak, and filled his role perfectly (irony, laughable grasp of reality, total and utter lack of morals, and a willingness to do anything for MOAR POWA!!). |
| #20Lord_VentnorMar 18, 2009 0:14:19 | Kefka was such a lame joke of a villain. It would be like if instead of casting Heath Ledger for the Joker in the Dark Knight they cast Paulie Shore instead. He seemed that way to me at first, until he ended up blowing up the world. Sadly, I haven't finished the game yet... |
| #21crimson_lancerMar 18, 2009 0:17:31 | He seemed that way to me at first, until he ended up blowing up the world. He's totally not a BBEG, and then suddenly, OH WAIT!! Yeah, yeah he is. :D I love it when they find new ways to mess with you that don't depend on being incredibly obvious in the storyline. Sadly, I haven't finished the game yet... ![]() Get to it, Ventnor! :P |
| #22baneofelvesMar 18, 2009 1:29:21 | Final Fantasy 4. Kain kicks ass. |
| #23KillerGMMar 18, 2009 1:37:16 | The one with Kefka and the octopus opera. Damn that octopus opera scene!! I always loved how Kefka laughed. |
| #24crofterMar 18, 2009 1:45:49 | FF VIII is one of my favorite games ever. It is also the only FF game I've ever played. I plan, however, on getting my hands on the other ones, too |
| #25viktor_von_doomMar 18, 2009 11:32:57 | For me 1. FFIX 2. FFX 3. FFVI 4. FFXII 5. FFXIII Most of the others I can't stand at all *IV specifically* or haven't played. |
| #26jasonorlandohawkMar 18, 2009 12:36:54 | Final Fantasy 2 (I use the SNES numbers exclusively, in honor of my childhood). Kain, Cecil, & Rydia are among my favorite video game characters to this day. I'm still annoyed that I can't find a good mp3 of the Red Wings March. The game was pure awesome. Final Fantasy 3 was also great (Terra, Umaro, Mog, & Gau were among my favorites). FF3 managed to produce some incredible music... Magitek Facility for the win! My all-time "greatest" FF moment was beating the Original NES Final Fantasy... that took FOREVER!!!! But when I won, it was worth it... FF7 was a great game, particularly for the music (and no, not just One Winged Angel). I loathed the magic system, but I still enjoyed that game. FF12 actually impressed me a lot, but I haven't beaten the game yet... and judging from it's size, I may never finish. Official ranking of this game is "pending." FF8 - FFX-2... ...I deny their existence, much as I deny the existence of FF Mystic Quest. |
| #27midnitepoisonMar 18, 2009 13:13:58 | Final Fantasy X. Ive beaten it 300+ times and I still cry like a baby every time I see the ending.![]() |
| #28baneofelvesMar 18, 2009 13:28:29 | Still? Wow. Play 4. Kain is so badass. He could TOTALLY hand Auron's ass to him, and Cecil isn't an irritating prick like Tidus. He's a likable protagonist. |
| #29rakeMar 18, 2009 14:31:48 | Still? Wow. Play 4. Kain is so badass. He could TOTALLY hand Auron's ass to him, and Cecil isn't an irritating prick like Tidus. He's a likable protagonist. *rage* Please don't mention Tidus. Seriously, what an irritating moron. Raaaarh. Worst. Lead. Ever. |
| #30baneofelvesMar 18, 2009 14:34:07 | I know. Seriously, FF's leads lately have just been garbage. Where are the Cecil's when you need them? Now HE is a awesome lead character. But Squall, Vaan, and Tidus. whiny angsty emo pretty boys.Never played 7 so I can't comment on Cloud. |
| #31rakeMar 18, 2009 15:24:54 | I know. Seriously, FF's leads lately have just been garbage. Where are the Cecil's when you need them? Now HE is a awesome lead character. I'm going to be unpopular and stick up for Squall here. He wasn't whiny, just kind of icy and logical. He was basically a prick, even if he dressed like an emo. The real-life emo trend hit hardest post ff8 too, so he wasn't intentionally riding the emo wagon. I actually liked Squall okay. Especially since he actually demonstrated some pretty believable character development. He's no Setzer, Edgar, or Cecil, but he's nowhere near as lame as Tidus. Blech. |
| #32baneofelvesMar 18, 2009 15:27:19 | I will agree with you, Squall is not that bad, but seeing "..." constantly got irritating. I think you pinned Squall the best w/ the description. His character developement was good, I will admit. But T**** and V*** are just pathetic. Yuck. |
| #33bofferMar 18, 2009 17:16:55 | My favorites are Tactics (PSP and PS1) and FFVI and FFXII, in that order. And like CL, I can probably play throufh FFVI in my sleep too. Just one name: Thunder God Cid, if there has ever been a broken character in the FF-series, it is him. |
| #34handofdarknessMar 18, 2009 18:37:53 | My Favorites are VI since it was my first, and VII mainly because of the soundtrack Haven't played VIII, IX, X-2, XI, III, or tactics though I bought X, used, on a whim, and I can't say that I was pleased. Maybe if it had a different story and characters it would be ok. |
| #35tiornysMar 18, 2009 18:48:24 | FFX is actually my favorite. Tidus doesn't bother me much, the story is entertaining and well paced, character development is a good mix between fixed (so the characters actually feel different) and optional (so you can take them in different directions on later playthroughs), and it has my favorite combat system of all the FF games (loses to Grandia for overall best RPG combat system). FF VI has my favorite story and characters, FF Tactics has the best overall mechanical mix, FF VIII has the best mini-game, FF VII has the best final boss track, and I like all of the rest but they don't have any particular aspect that stands out for me (admittedly, the only time I played FF IV, I borrowed it, played through it, and returned it in the space of two days at the end of Finals week, so I didn't get the most in-depth experience). t~ |
| #36viktor_von_doomMar 18, 2009 18:50:21 | Still? Wow. Play 4. Kain is so badass. He could TOTALLY hand Auron's ass to him, and Cecil isn't an irritating prick like Tidus. He's a likable protagonist. Other way around for me, I find Cecil and Kain utterly uninteresting. Give me Tidus and Auron any day. But I do have to agree on Vaan, while I don't hate him and Penelo, there just kind of their. Stupid focus groups cocking up the FFXII storyline. |
| #37jhonesyMar 18, 2009 18:52:44 | I wasn't able to get into the whole anime-FF thing after several of the games. I just always felt put-out by the experience and could not complete more then five minutes or so of a game before I turned it off. |
| #38FireclaveMar 20, 2009 15:32:19 | Of the ones I've played, IV, VI, VII, X, XII, FFT, and FFTA are my favorites so far.Thunder God Cid, if there has ever been a broken character in the FF-series, it is him. The assassins from FFTA have him beat, IMO. They had so many ways to auto-kill a char, it wasn't funny: Straight-out auto-death, petrification, and my favorite, a skill that inflicts both sleep and doom at the same time with the doom count ending on the same turn you would normally wake up, giving you plenty of time to steal that character's equipment and skills at greatly increased accuracy before his impending death. And the accuracy of these attacks were at least 60% or better, making FFTA the only FF game I've played where Death effects were actually useful. Works even better if you have a blue mage, since sleeping targets have pratically zero evade (bumping the accuracy of most attacks to 100%) and blue mages have a skill that can put the entire field to sleep. Now add more assassins. |
| #39awestrikerMar 20, 2009 15:35:34 | I'm going to have to go with 5, because except for Tactics Advance, Tactics A2, 3 (the DS remake of, in other words, the one between Japanese 2 and American 2), and Crystal Chronicles (which was HORRIBLE. don't get it, especially if you're a story type), I haven't played any others. As for those Assasins in FFTA... Yes, Blue Mage + Assassin FTW. Last Breath, Rockseal, Nightmare... all extremely good moves. They are less so in A2 because an enemy's Resilience (their resistance to negative status effects) varies more and is unaffected by facing. You get 65% at best on a conscious target. Also... Can we please be consistent? I'm hearing FFVI being referred to as FFIII, and FFIV being referred to as FFII. Please stick to the numbers they were given in Japan. |
| #40ranadielMar 20, 2009 18:59:23 | Bleh, I hate these topics. They always make me depressed when I read other people's responses.:P My break down would be as follows: 1. FFT 2. FFVI 3. FFIX After this the order sort of breaks down to where it depends somewhat on my mood, but I can break the remaining ones down into categories. Pleasent Ones to Play: FFIV FFV FFVII FFVIII FFTA Ones I dislike: FF FFMQ FFII FFX FFX2 FFXII FFCC And the only one I hate is FFIII. I bought the DS remake when it came out a long time ago, and I just could not stand playing it. I don't know what it was, but I gave up on liking it after entering the second dungeon or so. Crystal Chronicles You are a sick sick man. |
| #41midnitepoisonMar 20, 2009 19:27:30 | FFTA had BUNNIES!! |
| #42zeratulcraftMar 20, 2009 19:27:32 | Man what's wrong with Mystic Quest? I love that game... FF4 is my favouritest, Cecil's Dark Knight to Paladin shift is just a really interesting part of his story. As for FF8...I used to think Squall was all emo-whine-baby, til I replayed it, and thought "wow he's a really logical prick." and sorta understood how he got that way. FF9 I was replaying til I noticed someone had stolen/lost my fourth disc, and suddenly lost purpose in playing more. But still, not bad! FFTA amuses me cos Marche is terribly evil. A2... almost finished that, it is teh hardz. FF7 I never played for very long. FF6 wins because Shadow is made of win and ninja and nothing else. |
| #43crossroads_wandererMar 20, 2009 23:38:03 | The only one I've played is Crystal Chronicles, but I liked it. ![]() I know, I'm totally not enough of a FF geek for this thread. I liked playing a Selkie (I think that's what it was called :thinks , though. ![]() |
| #44crofterMar 21, 2009 3:17:40 | Hey, it's OTT; you are always good enough for any thread. Or that's how I have understood it. |
| #45baneofelvesMar 21, 2009 13:32:41 | FFXII sucks. I hate that one so much. As usual, the lead character really sucks, is a bishie, and there really is no point for him to come along. Bacsh or Balthier should have been the main character, IMO, or Ashe. |
| #46handofdarknessMar 21, 2009 13:39:51 | FFXII sucks. I hate that one so much. As usual, the lead character really sucks, is a bishie, and there really is no point for him to come along. Bacsh or Balthier should have been the main character, IMO, or Ashe. I didn't think that FFXII sucked, just that some of the characters needed to be redone, Vaan especially. Mechanically, though, I thought it was a good, but not great, game. I do agree that Basch or Balthier should have been the main characters though. |
| #47baneofelvesMar 21, 2009 13:46:04 | Vaan is so bland. I was wondering to myself: WHY are they dragging this kid around with them? He just seems completely out of place, like he doesn't really belong there, and is tagging along. Same thing with Penelo. Hate her too. I liked all the others, though. The combat system was boring, since you really didn't need to do anything, because of gambits. And magic seemed nerfed to me. |
| #48ranadielMar 21, 2009 14:06:50 | I didn't think that FFXII sucked, just that some of the characters needed to be redone, Vaan especially. Mechanically, though, I thought it was a good, but not great, game. Mechanically, it felt like you were playing Everquest by yourself. I would easily nominate it as one of the worst RPG battle systems I have ever had the displeasure of using. If I really thought about it, I'm sure I could think of some that are worse, but it would not be easy. |
| #49baneofelvesMar 21, 2009 14:08:56 | Yeah. I don't really like MMO's but at least in an MMO you can chat with friends. So MMO's have at least one thing over FF12. |
| #50ArmisaelMar 21, 2009 14:10:02 | The thing is, Vaan is NOT the lead in FXII. Seriously, the lead is Balthier. Vaan is just a viewpoint character, and that's confirmed by the developers of the game. They were forced to make Vaan the viewpoint character because the suits wanted "teh bishiez" as a lead, but the devs managed to sneak the true lead in anyway. |
| #51baneofelvesMar 21, 2009 14:12:50 | Why do they need bishies in it anyways? *sigh* Vaan and Penelo just had no point in the game, they should have been scrapped. |
| #52handofdarknessMar 21, 2009 14:13:37 | Mechanically, it felt like you were playing Everquest by yourself. I would easily nominate it as one of the worst RPG battle systems I have ever had the displeasure of using. If I really thought about it, I'm sure I could think of some that are worse, but it would not be easy. I guess I'm just used to playing Guild Wars with henchmen and heroes. But, to each his own. |
| #53ArmisaelMar 21, 2009 14:15:05 | Why do they need bishies in it anyways? *sigh* Vaan and Penelo just had no point in the game, they should have been scrapped. Bishies get the stupid girls to take a look at the game. You wouldn't believe what some executives are capable of doing for shifting a few extra units. |
| #54baneofelvesMar 21, 2009 14:17:11 | UGH. God, that is stupid. I prefer to have male characters that actually LOOK like a guy. I hated the lead of Suikoden 5, not b/c of his personality, but because he looked like a chick. |
| #55ranadielMar 21, 2009 14:20:47 | I guess I'm just used to playing Guild Wars with henchmen and heroes. But, to each his own. Well my issue with FFXII was that the way it was structured, I could swear that it was designed with the intention of eliminating lag from the battle. The delays in actions are just too freaking long, and it reminds me of when I played Everquest back when I was in middle school. For an MMO, dragging the actions out and automating them make sense so as to somewhat equalize the people with fast connections and slow connections. However it served absolutelty no purpose other than dragging the fights out to obnoxious lengths in FFXII. I suppose if you are used to those ideas from playing MMOs with some regularity, it wouldn't actually be an issue though. *shrugs* |
| #56ranadielMar 21, 2009 14:22:40 | UGH. God, that is stupid. I prefer to have male characters that actually LOOK like a guy. I hated the lead of Suikoden 5, not b/c of his personality, but because he looked like a chick. Oh come on, the prince just had long hair. At least he looked decent unlike Lazlo and his bicycle shorts.:P |
| #57ArmisaelMar 21, 2009 14:24:30 | UGH. God, that is stupid. I prefer to have male characters that actually LOOK like a guy. I hated the lead of Suikoden 5, not b/c of his personality, but because he looked like a chick. I know. Why do you think I'm making my alter-ego in the edition war a bishie? I remembered the idiotic comments from when 4th edition was launched about it being all "clichés, anime, and MMO!", and decided to run with it. And, of course, the first step was introducing the classic anime character: The guy who makes Vaarsuvius' gender ambiguity look easy to clear. :P But yeah, suits are stupid like that. D'you know how Raiden's appearance was created? By asking girls who mostly played DDR how they'd want the lead of a spy game to look. /facepalm |
| #58jhonesyMar 21, 2009 14:26:13 | The primary lead goodie will always have spikey hair. The primary lead baddie will always have long hair, girlish looks and being extremely annoying. Often he'll be a member of your team in disguise. :P |
| #59baneofelvesMar 21, 2009 14:28:42 | Oh come on, the prince just had long hair. At least he looked decent unlike Lazlo and his bicycle shorts.:P DO NOT REMIND ME OF THE HORROR OF THE BIKE SHORTS! NOOOO! At least Tir and Riou didn't suffer from those problems. Or Hugo and Geddoe. |
| #60viktor_von_doomMar 21, 2009 15:54:56 | *Is a guy and prefer bishies* |
| #61ArmisaelMar 21, 2009 16:05:39 | I like bishies too, but there's a time and place for everything. Adding a bishie just for extra sales is as bad as adding sex gratuitously. And there's no doubt Vaan was a gratuitous bishie. |
| #62viktor_von_doomMar 21, 2009 16:44:21 | Belive me I aint arguing against that. Vaan was useless, and at this point I've learned to just kind of tune him out, Penelo all right in my book though, far to adorable. |
| #63studpuffinMar 22, 2009 9:47:52 | I've played all of them (dweeb alert ) since just before X came out and haven't touched them since. Some of them are just horrid while others are great. The first game was probably good at the time, but its so hard on the eyes now that its impossible to play. Same for II, and III doesn't even appear to be finished with as many glitches that made it into the final game. Any remakes for them are welcome period.Final Fantasy IV (used to be 2 afaik) was may favorite in the 2-D series. You cannot top Cecil, and the mage twins were funny as hell. FF V wasn't as bad as most people complain. Its plot was useless, but the job system was beautiful. Glad it made its way into final fantasy tactics as well. VI is everyone's girlfriend. I don't know many people IRL who wouldn't say this was their favorite. VII was awesome. Some of the characters were kind of lame (I'm looking at you giant mog riding cat puppet Cait Sith), but they made up for it with a pretty compelling plot and lots of action. Music was good too, best in the series so far. VIII was okay. It didn't feel like a final fantasy game to me, but it was enjoyable enough to play mostly. IX is my favorite 3-D. Most people complain about this game, but I absolutely loved this game. The visuals were stunning, the characters were done well, and this game never dragged its feet. It also brought back the classic classes. X, of what I played, seems like its caught somewhere between 7, 8, and 9 on just exactly what it wants to be. Tactics is by far the best game in this series, however. The game was stunningly beautiful for the graphics style it used. The cartoony 2-D art on 3-D backgrounds made the game leap off of the screen. A heavily customizable job system made the game work well from the second battle through the end of the game, and shocking twists kept you coming for more. It set the curve and the rest of the games in the series are just SUV's waiting to roll off the road. Tactics Advanced sucked though. I hated those god darned judges and those cruddy rules! |
| #64pigknightMar 22, 2009 11:40:03 | I STAND BY CRYSTAL CHRONCLES! |
| #65viktor_von_doomMar 22, 2009 14:59:56 | I STAND BY CRYSTAL CHRONCLES! I like Crystal Chronicles to, only problem with it what you had to go through to play it with multiple people. |
