I was channel surfing when I paused on "Tutenstein". I enjoyed it and got to thinking about one of my favorite places ever, the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum in Santa Clara. No matter how many times I had been there, it always seemed that I found something new with every visit. The last time I went, I had taken the 8 year old daughter of a friend of mine. She was doing something on Ancient Egypt in her class and her mom didn't have time to take her. I love the place, so I volunteered in a heartbeat! Seeing all those mummies was like visiting old friends. VERY old friends! LOL I saw the alabaster dice, 3D6!!! I had to laugh at the image of a group of Ancient Egyptian temple nerds getting pushed around by the temple guards. Dioramas, the exhibits, the self-guided tomb tour, sigh! I'm gonna miss it badly when we leave the west coast for good!
How about you? Any place you've been to that you could go to million times and still enjoy as much as your first visit?
Monterey Bay Aquarium.
The woods. Any river. That sort of thing. Actual places typically have people in them. People, by and large, suck donkey ass. And that, of course, makes their breath smell terrible. I can't abide bad breath.
I spent my weekend in Palatina, and boy, if any of you ever gets to Germany, go there. It was... spectacular. The hillside, hectares over hectares covered in wine, slowly descending to the Rhine as it passes the cliffs to leave the forested mountains for the plains beyond. Only tiny villages, too, no cities, no noise, only rural calm. I listened to the Rheingold the entire way, of course 
. I could do that everyday, so very beautiful.
Pretty much the same as Z_B... There's tons of little natural places around here that just jump out and surprise you when you're not looking for them.
Avery Point, however, is my spot. It's a UCONN extension campus built on the site of an old estate on a spit of land sticking out into Long Island Sound. The physical plant and campus police station are located in original stone buildings from the estate, and the manor house (Branford House) itself is still there as well. There's a small historic lighthouse down by the water, as well as a larger one called the Ledge Light out in the water that's supposedly haunted by the last lighthouse-keeper, who hung himself there.
All day long there are seabirds flying and sailboats passing by, and sometimes the tall ships sail past. Back in college I sat out on the rocks and wrote poetry all day instead of going to class.
I could sit and listen to the sounds of the ocean with the sun on my face for the rest of eternity.

The 7-11 near my house is a place of comfort for me. A point of light in the darkness, if you will. Whenever it changes, it does so for the better.
Everything else just kinda sucks more than it used to.
I feel as at home there as I do at my house. Me and that 7-11 have a long history...
I do have a second favorite place. Although the Rosicrucian ranks #1 on my list, the Japanese Friendship Garden in San Jose comes in a close second. It's hidden from the surrounding places, so once you walk past the gates it's like the rest of the city doesn't exist. After my mother died, I went there seeking comfort amidst the stones and the koi pond. I don't know how long I was there that day, but I felt much more at peace when I left.
