| #2The_SilverswordFeb 08, 2010 4:27:37 | Got any links? I totally missed it. |
| #3grumpyceltFeb 08, 2010 8:51:00 | tv.yahoo.com/blog/the-super-bowls-buzzie... Second from the top, but YMMV. 'Cause Betty White talkin' trash about your girlfriend is pretty funny too. |
| #4pluisjenFeb 08, 2010 8:59:38 | I hate all ads (some are funny once, hardly any are funny twice, none are funny when they show up when I'm trying to do something else, which is basically all the time) I still find it hard to believe people actually like watching advertisements ![]() |
| #5grumpyceltFeb 08, 2010 9:03:48 | Only some ads and only once a year. |
| #6scypioFeb 08, 2010 10:03:52 | Superbowl ads have been declining with the general decline in ad quality. 10 or 15 years ago, the ads were amusing. Now, they're pretty annoying or just stupid. Man, everything was just better in the 90s. |
| #7The-Mage-KingFeb 08, 2010 10:12:27 |
It appears that Disney noticed that, since they've digitally remastered MMPR. On the OT, the Audi one. |
| #8boraxeFeb 08, 2010 12:18:00 | Man, everything was just better in the 90s. ![]() ![]() Oh nostalgia, you make people say the funniest damned things! ![]() ![]() ![]() |
| #9Cpt_MichaFeb 08, 2010 14:19:17 | Seriously.. Nirvana was at it's fever pitch in the 90s. Don't get me started on Rob Liefeld and his Disciples. Then of course you have warhammer/40k in the 90s god some fugly minis. With even worse paint jobs. Dialup internet... computers in general. Early 3d gaming with all of the **** Brown. That's all just for starters. |
| #10ShiftkittyFeb 08, 2010 14:33:00 | There was one commercial that seemed to get past the censors. It was a Groundhog day celebration, but they pulled some tiny football player out and if he saw his shadow it meant 6 more weeks of football. What caught my attenion was the name of the town. It was on screen only briefly: "Gobbler's Knob" If you don't get it, ask your raunchy friends what "gobbling the knob" means... I liked the Betty White/Abe Vigoda ad and was surprised to see that Abe Vigoda was still alive! The Dorito's one with the funeral was one of my favorites, and the Dorito's throwing star/samurai one was good, but the Eco-cops Audi commercial gave me the creeps. Please! Don't give those eco-nutjobs any ideas! However, the one with the guys with the killer whale stuck in the back of the car was great. Overall quality was not the greatest, however. I didn't see anything truly memorable. The E-trade baby wasn't as annoying as he usually is, and the "Milkaholic" one even made me chuckle, but overall there was nothing I'd say was great. My all-time favorite from Superbowls Past was the EDS commercial with the cowboys herding cats. Don't recall which year that was. |
| #11scypioFeb 08, 2010 15:06:14 | Seriously.. Nirvana was at it's fever pitch in the 90s. Even if you don't like Nirvana (or Pearl Jam), you'd compare them to what rock bands today? Nickleback? And if you go to "punk" music, I'd much rather have Green Day, the Offspring, Blink 182 than Fallout Boy, Panic! at the Disco, or Cute is What We Aim For. (Music is based off of popularity and not actual "goodness".) I'm not sure about the actual comic book industry today, but didn't Jim Lee and Todd McFarlane actually draw comic books regularly in the 90s? I was also a fan of Michael Turner and J. Scott Campbell who both were popular in the late 90s. I don't know anything about wargames. But I'll definately give you technology. Technology is much better. And that's not even touching "real" subjects like the economy, obesity and other chronic illness, the news media/journalism, freedom, people, and even my coresponding job if I had it in the 90s. I also think movies (mainly action movies) and television were better then. |
| #12EscherEnigmaFeb 08, 2010 15:54:52 | Why can't you have Fallout Boy and Blink 182? They both sit quite happily on my iPod. Along with a few choice Disney songs, some Garth Brooks, a scattering of Madonna, I think one Britney Spears song, Meat Loaf, Nightwish, ... |
| #13ShiftkittyFeb 08, 2010 21:21:27 | You ought to try my player. It's probably the only one in the world where you can have Domine followed by Rosemary Clooney followed by John Philip Sousa and capped off with Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs! |
| #14Cpt_MichaFeb 08, 2010 22:10:39 | Even if you don't like Nirvana (or Pearl Jam), you'd compare them to what rock bands today? Nickleback? (Music is based off of popularity and not actual "goodness".) Nickelback is much better than Nirvana. Saliva > nirvana. We also have Lacuna Coil now. The thing about those two, is they were Exceptions in a Sea of utter Crap. (and trust me there's alot of Crap in the 90s more than there is now actually. This happened because of the Balooning that happened where "investors" would buy comics cause "they are collectable"... yeah... it lead to some serious *** being made) Most comics stunk to high heaven in the 90s. |
| #15scypioFeb 09, 2010 8:28:42 | Why can't you have Fallout Boy and Blink 182? They both sit quite happily on my iPod. Along with a few choice Disney songs, some Garth Brooks, a scattering of Madonna, I think one Britney Spears song, Meat Loaf, Nightwish, ... You can have both. I don't think you have to chose to have only one or the other. Variety is good. But my assertion was that pop culture (primarily, although most things) were better in the 90s. And in that comparision, Blink 182 is superior to Fallout Boy (in my opinion). And on top of actual music, Fallout Boy is much douchier and annoying (even though Tom is pretty douchy, but that mainly happened in the 2000s). Honestly, Pete Wentz is one of the douchiest people I can think of currently plus he's not even the lead singer or lead guitarist; he's a stupid bassist. Nickelback is much better than Nirvana. Saliva > nirvana. Nickleback? Is that the top representative? Now I don't hate them nearly as much as my wife or my coworkers, but if they're the "best" rock band of the decade, then you have some serious problems. I'd definately not say they're good rock music. Even if you don't like Nirvana, you have to acknowledge that Pearl Jam is legitimately a good rock band. I think Saliva is okay from random stuff I've heard from them. But they don't really stick out much to me. So I'll have to refrain from commenting. I also do not know what Lacuna Coil is so if its a band, it should have to fit into the ultra popularness required for "pop culture". But c'mon, 90s alt rock was amazing! Nirvana, Pearl Jam, the Offspring, Green Day, Soundgarden, STP, the Smashing Pumpkins, Blink 182, etc were all really popular and good music. What would be their 2000s equivalence? Nickleback, Linkin Park, Fallout Boy, My Chemical Romance, Papa Roach, Kings of Leon, Panic! at the Disco... I'm not really sure who else would go there. But that's a vastly inferior list. I also left out bands like the Foo Fighters since they pretty much were popular in both decades, even though their best album was in the 90s. And remember, I'm talking about popular music since in every decade, you can probably find good bands. I regularly read comics in the 90s. There were good artists and writers. I don't read them as regularly now, but I still read stuff now and then. Its also good. I'd say comics are a push, but I just remember more exceptional artists back then, but that can easily be due to knowledge of the industry. I know the Kuberts are still active (although apparently for DC), but who else are considered some of the top artists today? |
| #16zombie_babiesFeb 09, 2010 9:07:51 | There was one commercial that seemed to get past the censors. It was on screen only briefly: "Gobbler's Knob" Gobbler's Knob is a real place. It's where Phil spends his time before the big day. Unless we're askin' the censors to go after the names of actual places, there was nothing missed. Now for the important stuff. Nickelback better than Nirvana? I smell crack. That's just absolutely insane. I don't even hate Nickelback. Really. But Nirvana was one of the greatest bands of all time. Of all time! |
| #17EscherEnigmaFeb 09, 2010 10:01:24 | But my assertion was that pop culture (primarily, although most things) were better in the 90s. Forgive my incredulous stare, but people have been talking about the "good ol' days" of yor since at least Plato. You will always find someone that's saying things used to be better. |
| #18boraxeFeb 09, 2010 11:59:37 | Nickelback is much better than Nirvana. Saliva > nirvana. Bite your tongue! I am not a member of the Nirvana cult, but that is slanderous! Nickelback are a crime against humanity. |
| #19boraxeFeb 09, 2010 12:02:28 | What caught my attenion was the name of the town. It was on screen only briefly: "Gobbler's Knob" It is the name of the actual location in Punxsutawney, PA where the Groundhog Day event is held each year: pittsburgh.about.com/cs/punxsutawney/a/g... |
| #20The_SilverswordFeb 09, 2010 12:42:25 | The fact that Gobbler's Knob is a real place makes it even funnier! And the Careebuilder comercial with "casual" fridays was pretty funny, I actually laffed out loud on that one. And the early 90s was the time of my "coming of age" so theres alot of good memories there. And there was some killer comic books from that time! Any body remember the Sandman (not the Spiderman villan)? One of the best ever, although i think it started up in the late 80's i would still count it as a 90's comic, thats when i started to really get into it. And Marvel just had the one Timeline, well and What If?, not the crap theyre doing now! |
| #21scypioFeb 09, 2010 13:00:28 | Forgive my incredulous stare, but people have been talking about the "good ol' days" of yor since at least Plato. You will always find someone that's saying things used to be better. But that doesn't make it false, hence the discussion. |
| #22EscherEnigmaFeb 09, 2010 13:25:52 | But that doesn't make it false, hence the discussion. This is a discussion? I thought it was just people acting like people and complaining about how things today are worse then things were yesterday. That's not really a discussion, it's just stating unverifiable opinions as fact. |
| #23scypioFeb 09, 2010 13:40:48 | Eh, its kind of both. For myself, there were times where I stated opinions as facts, but other times I was trying to engage in a discussion. But it probably is more of complaining. Although I at least mentioned facts like the economy and obesity. And you can have discussions of opinions. |
| #24EscherEnigmaFeb 09, 2010 13:50:11 | And you can have discussions of opinions. Based on history, not when it comes to music. |
| #25Robin_HoodlumFeb 10, 2010 17:37:37 | I didn't see the Super Bowl ads. Nor did I see the Super Bowl... MY FREAKING CABLE WAS OUT!!!! ARRRGGGHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
| #26MechaPilotFeb 10, 2010 22:04:45 | Seriously.. Nirvana was at it's fever pitch in the 90s. I hope you were listing that as a negative. Nirvana is (imo) the most overrated band since the beatles. Every time a major band member is killed, OD's or commits suicide, the band ends up being talked about for way longer than their music warranted. |
| #27Robin_HoodlumFeb 11, 2010 5:40:33 |
Agreed. |
| #28zombie_babiesFeb 11, 2010 8:05:58 | No way, doods. Nirvana was actually quite good. So good, in fact, that their stuff is still listenable to this very day. That's much more than can be said about most modern attempts at music. |
| #29scypioFeb 11, 2010 8:08:40 | Even if you don't like Nirvana (or Pearl Jam), who I think are the representatives of 90s rock, you have to admit they're better than something crappy like Nickleback. I don't even know who else would be considered a representative of 2000s rock. |
| #30zombie_babiesFeb 11, 2010 8:13:05 | Yep. They had that thing so many bands from today lack ... talent. EDIT: Thinking about it, there were a couple of popular rock bands from the 2000s. Audioslave and Velvet Revolver. So, I guess that bands today can be kind of good. Oh wait. Those were bands formed from other bands that were popular in the '90s. Soundgarden/Rage for Audioslave and GnR/STP for Velvet Revolver. Whoops, guess those don't count. ![]() Wanna talk overrated band? Howsabout Tool? Waaaaay overrated. They have one song. One. They just keep recording it over and over again and calling it something different. Seriously, everything they do sounds exactly the same. It was cool at first, but I'm really, really tired of hearing the same song over and over. So they suck (IMO). Rammstein is pretty overrated, too. Though I do like that one new song they did that I can't name here cuz it would either end up as '*'s or get me modded. Maybe more overplayed than overrated, but I don't like 'em very much. |
| #31scypioFeb 11, 2010 10:30:09 | Yeah, I think Audioslave was one of the better bands of the 2000s, but it doesn't help that they're just a mashup of 90s bands. Who is considered a top 2000s rock band (besides someone crappy like Nickleback)? And I don't know too much about Tool. I heard a few songs which I liked, although I think I have a general negative opinion of them. They just seem overly snooty and artsy. So I would agree with your overrated comment based on very little. My wife likes Rammstein. I really don't know anything by them so I can't comment. Although it just seems harder to listen to since you (I) can't understand them. She's slowly been starting to listen to more of my metal bands (since apparently Rammstein was her only metal band). |
| #32zombie_babiesFeb 11, 2010 11:53:49 | Yeah, I think Audioslave was one of the better bands of the 2000s, but it doesn't help that they're just a mashup of 90s bands. Who is considered a top 2000s rock band (besides someone crappy like Nickleback)? I honestly can't name one rock band of the 2000s other than Nickelback. Not a good time for the genre. Tool is well known for their artsy snobbery. Yet another reason to dislike them. ;) I don't consider Rammstein metal. More industrial than metal. They also do English versions of some of their songs so you can get an idea of what it is they're saying. My favorite (and currently the only one I like) song by them is in English. The video is hilarious. Totally NSFW and a perma-ban type CoC violation to link to it, but that's why it's so damned fun. ![]() |
| #33scypioFeb 11, 2010 12:04:28 | My wife said that its best not to know what they (Rammstein) are singing about because its extremely lame and stupid once its translated. |
| #34zombie_babiesFeb 11, 2010 12:12:37 | My wife said that its best not to know what they (Rammstein) are singing about because its extremely lame and stupid once its translated. Heh. That's a fair assessment. The one song I like is supposed to be stupid, though, so it's not quite as bad. |
| #35MechaPilotFeb 11, 2010 13:20:06 | Tool and Rammstein are also both overrated. And don't get me wrong. Overrated doesn't mean that they don't have talent. It just means they get much more play on the radio and much more love than their talent actually warrants. |
| #36eratoFeb 11, 2010 13:46:16 | Rammstein is pretty overrated, too. Though I do like that one new song they did that I can't name here cuz it would either end up as '*'s or get me modded. Maybe more overplayed than overrated, but I don't like 'em very much. I like Rammstein. But most of all, I love the attitude of some of their fans. When they made the music video for '****' (the female genital organ), my father told me there had been a lot of outrage among their fans. I was curious about what taboo the band had broken, what could suddenly make people outraged, compared what they had already done in their older works. So I watched the video, and was fairly disappointed, since it just looked like porn. Normal porn, at that. So I checked one of the Danish fan pages, to see if people were really offended over it, and the answer was (roughly): "They've sold out! They used to be provocative and innovative, but this just looks like every other music video with hot chicks!" So apparently, gender bending and cross-dressing is fine, aiming to be disgusting is fine, semi (and full) perversion is fine, but the breaking point is showing mainstream porn, not because of the sexual context, but because it's too normal. I can respect that ![]() |

The way my friends and I see it is that they made the video that most guys would make if they were ever in a band big enough to be able to make a video like that. It's perfect. Why hint at sex - even strongly - when you can just do it? My favorite part is when he's standing at the podium singing and pointing his finger at the implied gathered masses. Fantastic. And if that's the way the fans see it, I gotta say I have to respect it, too. I mean, that's a pretty hardcore reaction. But I do have to ask them something: 'So what's the problem?' ![]() ![]() |

But I do have to ask them something: 'So what's the problem?' I guess it's a problem for the people who liked Rammstein videos because they were different. They often seemed to be made partly out of an artistic vision, and partly for breaking taboos just for the hell of it. Making it pleasant for the viewer never like seemed a priority before. And maybe it wasn't a priority here either, but it looked a lot like it. I personally I enjoyed watching a Rammsteain video and go away thinking 'that was actually disturbing/surprising/interesting/whatever'. This video didn't do anything for me. Anyway, wasn't this thread supposed to be abut Superbowl adds? I don't have any myself, don't watch it, and barely even know what it is (it's got something to do with American football, right?), but maybe someone else has something on-topic to offer? |

It's just so much noise, ya know? Taste in music is just taste in music, there is very little objective quality to any of it, and what objective measures there are don't really correlate to how much people actually like the music. |
| #45eratoFeb 11, 2010 16:22:49 | I was jus' quotin' a line from the tune. Oh well. I think I remember that, something like 'you've got a ****, I got a ****' etc.? Haven't listened much to it, I like their songs better in German. I thought the video was quite amusing. Ya don't see all that many like it. Well, I don't. ;) There's actual porn, and there's 'we want to make porn but we're too scared of it, so we'll just borrow the body language instead' music videos. Rammstein made a music video showing what the others only hinted, but it wasn't very different from normal porn, which stopped being interesting to me after the 4th time, approximately. The video only works as daring and innovative because porn is still something of a taboo among certain people. But among others, it's completely mainstream, and it's those people who're most likely to watch the semi-porn videos anyway, so what's the point? Porn faces, porn movements, porn women, etc, are being used by almost everyone, while still somehow being regarded as 'edgy'. It's the safest thing in the world, do absolutely nothing to challenge or provoke your target audience, just count on other people's dislike to give the audience something to feel smug about. And of course, being a heterosexual woman, I have little interest in the standard 'sexy girls service non-sexy guys' routine, which is the standard for both porn and 'sexy/edgy/we didn't know what else to put in it' music videos for decades. WARNING: Extreme dorkiness. |
