#2 thecasualoblivion May 21, 2008 1:35:54	Its cliche, and people will groan, but its how I feel if I'm being honest about this: Final Fantasy VII I could say something more interesting like Suikoden II(which I do own), but I'd be kidding myself. On a side note, I have a soft spot for old school RPGs from the 80's like 'The Bard's Tale' and 'Might and Magic II'. Explaining 'The Bard's Tale' to modern videogamers is one of the more entertaining and interesting conversations a person can have.
#3 belladonna5012 May 21, 2008 2:02:34	God Hand, the game that was the Epic Destiny of the PlayStation 2. It's a game about punching people in the face (you could also say it's about a guy who gets his arm lopped off by a bunch of demonic thugs, woke up the next morning with the God Hand in its place, and is now saving the world from being taken over by demons, but that is beside the point). Rather than fluff up the game with endless filler to distract the player from the monotony of the fighting... it went right back to basics and made the fighting fun in the first place. Button mash like a dummy, and the game destroys you with great prejudice. That, and it doesn't take itself seriously; where many games try to be all "epic" and stuff, this one just goes for a plain, straightforward storyline that A) gets you into the action and keeps you there and B) serves for a few laughs. Also, the game had awesome music and an honest-to-goodness sense of humour, with intentionally bad dialogue and voice acting, a new off-the-wall joke around every corner, and completely over-the-top moves. The makers set out to make the best B-game ever, and they did it. It's better than a great many ultra-hyped, best-selling, "serious," A-list games I've seen in the 17 or 18 years I've been playing video games. Also, it's hard and actually makes you earn your victories instead of rolling right over for anyone who can push buttons like so many games these days. The sad thing is, nobody cared and nobody learned from the things it did so right. The public refused to accept non-mediocrity, God Hand flopped at the market because some idiot reviewers at third-rate game mags (like IGN) gave it crap reviews for not rolling over and letting them win like the rest of the yawn-inducing cakewalk button-mashing games on the market, and the studio that made it got canned. Clover Studios died to bring you this extremely awesome game. And it's available for like eighteen bucks brand-spankin'-new on Amazon. Funny though, how easy of a DnD Character he is to make, especially thanks to the PHB2. I otherwise have many other favorite games too, such As Final Fantasy 4. Edit: I think this God-hand sounds interesting, also I've played Gotcha Force! nice game

Honourable Mentions go to: Secret of Mana Tetris Attack Mario Kart (N64 + GC) Chibi-Robo Animal Crossing: Wild World Elaboration... Yes, I think Link to the Past is the best Zelda game. I know most people seem to think Ocarina of Time is, but that ranks about 3rd in my opinion. Majora's Mask getting 2nd. I still haven't finished Secret of Mana either. Me and brother used to play it loads though. I was the sprite, because magic is cool. My family members refuse to play me at Tetris Attack now, because I always beat them. I don't own the DS Mario Kart. I have the SNES one, but think it's improved a lot since then. I'm not so keen on the Wii one. Steering with the wiimote feels awkward. Chibi-Robo is amazing. It's bizarre. You play a tiny little robot whose job is to make the family that bought you happy. You do this by cleaning. This is of course before you meet the living toys, the giant robot in the basement, and the time-travelling aliens. Animal Crossing is great fun, if a tad completely pointless. People ask what the aim is. There is no aim. You just do stuff. I love it though.

Personally, though, I think the most sucktastic thing Capcom ever did was forgetting how to count past 2 for a decade when it came to the Street Fighter series. Although I did stop playing Mega Man after one of the Zero releases, so I may have missed further degradation of that series.

(I am on the Dagoth server if anyone wants to say hello) I was also a big fan of games like Oblivion. On the web based side, I've been enjoying Weewar ( www.weewar.com ) and Goal Line Blitz ( www.goallineblitz.com ). Weewar is a little mutiplayer hex-based wargame where people have a set amount of time to take their turns (usually 24 hours). Goal Line Blitz is essentially a football MMO. You roll up a character for a position who starts at level 1, and spend starting points and skills. Then, as you train and play games, you gain experience and start leveling up which allows you to improve your stats and skills. The cool thing is that there are both computer run and player run teams. So all characters get a chance to get some play time on CPU teams to start, and as they develope skills, Player Run teams will start making contract offers to have them join. So many games to play, so little time!

I loved the Snes great games, some of which have helped my ways of Dming in D&D. As it's better than people mentioning all those GTA's, Halo, and I don't think WoW has been mentioned yet (if so, my bad, if not, then it might be my fault once mentioned).
#22 wolfvyn May 22, 2008 7:20:43	A lot of this thread almost seems like bragging, but in the defense of the posters who posted just about every game they really liked instead of their favorite there are a lot of good games mentioned. personally I'm going to have to say asteroid. there are scores of games that I really loved, but honestly I always come back Asteroid. I have almost every system and a library of at least a hundred games, most of which i can't find for the life of me, and I play none of them as often as I do asteroid. If there exists a button for gaming asteroid hit it like a hyper child in an elevator.

PS1 & PS2) Bushido Blade 2 (PS1) and the Tenchu Series (I have 1, 2, Wrath of Heaven, and Fatal Shadows), Though I'd have to say Wrath of Heaven is my favorite mainly for Co-Op mode. (PS1 & PS2) and I could go on but I'll stop here. On a side note worst game ever: Death By Degrees for PS2.

They very quickly devolve from "what's your favorite game" into "post a bigger list of obscure Japanese RPGs than the last poster to prove how 1337 you are". Kind like like threads about intelligence/IQ become "post an IQ number at least 10 points higher than a poster you consider yourself smarter than" threads. ;) My favourite "game" is the GTA series. Based on sheer time on keyboard I'd have to list WoW, Civ II, and Sim City 2000 as faves as well.

Final Fantasy Tactics I didn't care for the music, and I had just discovered the joy of techno music and specifically Daft Punk, so I played that one CD over and over while I played. Now when I listen to Daft Punk I remember this game oh so fondly. Knights of the Old Republic I'm a sucker for Star Wars and for RPGs so this was an obvious fave. Didn't care so much for the sequel. World of Warcraft Horribly addicted to this one. Fable I was depressed by how short this one was, but it was lots of fun. Hoping the sequel will prove equally amusing.

So... of the early nineties, when SNES and Genesis were all the rage... Chrono Trigger. It was the first RPG I played and was just so damn awesome. Moving onto PS and Nintendo 64... Final Fantasy Tactics. The story was baffling, but the characters were neat, even if I didn't understand how the individual scenes flowed together. And the mechanics were awesome. At some point Baldur's Gate 2 should be thrown in there. Loved the character interactions, even if the system was a bit arcane to me. Fortunately the game was designed well enough that you could succeed without understanding it completely. Moving into more recently we get Knights of the Old Republic and Final Fantasy X. Loved the characters from both even if the stories (though epic) didn't catch me as well.

Oh, btw, it's PLANESCAPE: TORMENT The best game I have EVER played. EVAR. Seriously. If I could only ever play one game again, this is the game I would choose. It's not as pretty as some, and I hate that it is a game that has THAC0 in it, but I love the game nonetheless. No game, and I've played hundreds, has ever come close to dethroning it from the number one spot of gaming memories. So much, that I would probably shed a tear if my copy got damaged and if the only way I could get it again was to buy an overpriced copy on ebay, I would gladly do it.

Specifically Baldur's Gate 2. The sheer awesomeness cannot be described. I can thank the creators of this game for begining my love affiar with D&D. The Legacy of Kain Series (Blood Omen 1&2, Soul Reaver1&2, Defiance) Really awesome. I am obsessed.

If you loved BG and BGII, then you will enjoy PS:T Planescape has the same engine as Baldur's Gate... with a few bugs and it doesn't run too smoothly at times... but the plot, the story, the depth, the NPCs and the world are amazing. I got my copy off e-bay a couple of years ago... you can find it if you look hard enough

Those who said Planescape: Torment should be commended too - it didn't get my blood pumping like BG, but the story is arguably better (and weirder!). Space for an honorable mention... - Grim Fandango

#42 kittenstew May 25, 2008 16:08:10	1) snake 2) minesweeper 3) FreeCell 4) solitaire ... ...Joking... ______________________ OK, my real Top 5 are (I have been playing since the days of pong, but these are the ones that I played/enjoyed the most): 5) FF-X (I just loved the ending to this game - and the sphere grid was an awesome leveling system - I spent something like 300 hours leveling my characters...). 4) Burn-out 3: Takedown (Only driving game I ever liked - mostly because the destruction you can cause in this game was brilliant - I would hazard a guess that I would like the sequels as well). 3) Kingdom Hearts 1 & 2 (I liked the story better in the first one, and game play was better in the second). 2) Fable (Sometimes it is fun to marry a girl, get a dowry, have your way with her, beat her until she divorces you, and then murder her, find another girl, rinse/repeat – or you can be good too if you like ;) ). 1) Mass Effect (The character development is really cool and the tactics and gameplay are rediculously rad. Wish the game had been a little bigger, better sidequests, and better AI, but honestly - It still delivered WIN in spades).

#45 erleni May 26, 2008 12:11:15	I'll stick to five games only: Tales of Symphonia (GameCube): a wonderful storyboard, outstanding characters, a nice bit of humour and great combat effects (Thunder Blade!!) Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii): real action. During a mission you are riding, shooting a bow to hit flying enemies, waving your sword to smash enemies on horses, while trying to put down a fire on a cart ALL AT ONCE. Ultima Underworld II (PC): best atmosphere. Music really touches your heart and character's are sooo deep. Resident Evil 4 (Wii edition): this games always keep you on the edge of your nerves... Eye of the Beholder II (PC): the first computer RPG I played...

Many of the various resident evils, and panza dragoon saga also make the list. I like the soul calibur games, but for the fighting, not the girls (with the possible execption of Ivy in the earlier games)

I'd like to and read a lot about it, but since SS2 didn't work on XP and now Vista, I figured it was hopeless trying to dredge up SS1 and watch it not work. There are DOS emulators out there that could make it work, though I've got an old VAIO with Win 95 so I haven't had to look for any. There are also legacy drivers for many sound cards to make them compatible with older games--often on the installation CD the card came with.

It is rare even now for a game to have that much depth and such a well developed story. It was awesome. Deus Ex Rocked Morrowind meh (hatred for people who say it was "too open ended" don't hate me ;). The too "open ended" aspect is an issue for me was more of an issue of no real direction or story. Deus Ex and Planescape: Torment both railroaded like crazy, but the story was worth it.

#57 strudel_lumpycakes Jun 01, 2008 2:22:32	1. Warcraft 2- I don't even have words for this one. I've spent entire DAYS daydreaming of nothing but this game. I spent 4th and 5th grade almost worshiping that game. Without it, I doubt I ever would have gotten interested in fantasy, let alone be posting here. Four runners up: Fable- I picked Fable up late in the game, after the huge fallout from the massive overhype, so my expectations where quite low. Something about it grabbed me and wouldn't let go. I racked up 20-something hours of play in the first 3 days (quite a bit for me). Black and White- Not a big fan of the sequel, but my god, this was one of the most beautiful games ever made. Black and White knew how to play its cards right, and that was by not showing them all. This is possibly the only game where I've felt a sense of wonder Smash Bros Melee- The greatest party game ever. Starcraft- It says something that every LAN party, this 9 year old game is played 9 times as much as anything else.

Super metroid is probably the best in that series.), Starcraft, and to some extent the 3D legend of zelda series that isn't Windwaker. My tastes are pretty odd, I hated God of War(the third one butchered greek mythology so much. It wasn't even funny.)

Being a Bioware Aurora Engine game, its sort of a younger cousin to the neverwinter and Kotor games, but, (IMHO) better in every way (engine wise). As for the story and game itself, it is even more awesome, and I really gets you in the mood to play a game of D&D, even though it isn't D&D. Plus its really pretty.

It was really simple in form, being 100 rooms laid out in a 10x10 grid with pits, bats, rope, sword, arrow, and dragons. If you fell in the pit without the rope you died. If you ran into the bats without the sword you died. If you ran into the dragon without the arrow you died. It was quite fun, running around, looking for the arrow while avoiding the pits until you found the dragon and then fired the arrow at him to kill him. I even have "Door Into Summer" on my cellphone (not as a ringtone, but just to listen to know and then; it's a .midi, so it's not like the quality's that much worse than on my laptop). It's a shame my 32X and Genesis broke, otherwise I'd be playing it till this day. Heck, if they still worked, I'd probably never have bought a PS2...

I adore Metal Gear Solid, MGS3 Snake Eater and MGS4 Guns of the Patriots above all the series, but they are all awesome. I love action movies and MGS is like the greatest action movie *ever*. <3
