| #1shamurai7Jul 15, 2008 14:41:46 | its a sad day when a game that had such potential is going to M$.....those money grabbing pigs have done nothing but krap all over the electronic gaming industry.... now it isnt being released until 2009 so they can release both at the same time...i bet M$ payed them extra so they can turn it into another lame FPS game..... apparently nothing is sacred anymore. everything M$ touches turns to krap, and now they have ruined videogames for me... just wait DND is next....they will offer HASBRO gobs of cash and make everyone burn their books and turn DND into an exclusive program that only runs on VISTA!!!!!!! |
| #2encaraJul 15, 2008 14:51:03 | Oh please, as if expanding a video game to play on PC has ANYTHING to do with Microsoft or the quality of the game. lrn2ply life |

| #4encaraJul 15, 2008 16:33:58 | Holy nerd rage, Batman! It's like some sort of rampant fanboy planetary alignment. Hmm alignments say you... (We'll do it 4th ed style) Chaotic Fanboy When picking this alignment, choose a subtype (like Final Fantasy, Warcraft, D&D [particular edition], etc.). A Chaotic Fanboy tends to flip out when changes are made to his/her subtype. As a rule, they find any available forum and post apocalyptic messages, ignoring or openly mocking counter arguments without any real rebuttal. Fanboy When picking this alignment, choose a subtype (like Final Fantasy, Warcraft, D&D [particular edition], etc.). A Fanboy will relentlessly pursue information regarding or related to his subtype. If changes are suggested, Fanboys can start out with cautious optimism or derisive pessimism. Regardless, Fanboys tend to viciously critique and criticize any minutiae of information released. Anyone who disagrees with them can be expected to be met with aggressively defensive arguments varying from mildly well thought out to effective forum vomit. |
| #5farmer42_dupJul 15, 2008 18:30:17 | So, apparently Harmonix has sold out, too, since they're making RBII a 360 exclusive at launch, though they're releasing it to the other consoles a couple of months later. i mean, things like this have nothing at all to do with the fact that the 360 has the best (I'm not being a fanboy here, several developers have said this) digital delivery format right now. Or an easier coding language that's more familiar to any devs who went through a comp-sci major in college, or even that it's currently the top selling console (in NA, worldwide the Wii has the edge by about 5 million units, with the 360 on top of the PS3 by another six million.) I mean, there's no need for sound business descisions. The days of thrid party exclusivity are fading away. We'll likely still see some for the 360, but that's more a result of the easy transition to PC compatability than anything else, and will likely only be with publishers traditionally associated with PC gaming. |

| #8TenzhiJul 16, 2008 1:01:18 | i bet M$ payed them extra so they can turn it into another lame FPS game... Like Resistance? Or Haze? |
| #9farmer42_dupJul 16, 2008 1:22:28 | Like Resistance? Or Haze? Even then, the exclusives on the Xbox tend to be better. Resistance has better MP, but Gears had a better story. Sure, they have MGS, but it's getting stale, and the core consumer for MGS isn't mainstream, the way FF will be. And you probably don't want to bring the PS3 up over on the SAGA boards, since they've been waiting since before March for the Force Unleashed to come out, but it keeps getting pushed back so that the sourcebook can be released at the same time as the game, which was in turn delayed so that they could launch on multiple consoles (IE the PS3, which wasn't done at that point.) So we have Force Unleashes minis, lego sets, and action figures, but no sourcebook. Great. I'm just so motivated to get a PS3. Now, don't get me wrong, it's a nice console, and a dirt cheap Blu-Ray player, but it really isn't that great a system, especially if you're tied down to only one console. But I can tell you that most of the people I know that have both mostly just use the PS3 for movies. Like I said earlier, we're likely to see third party exclusive go away, with a couple of exceptions. We'll also likely see more "exclusive" launches, like what we're getting with Rock Band 2, where there's a window of two-to-three months between releases, that way the game hits shelves on the primary development console first and they have time to port it over and maybe add some tweaks and extra content that was pulled from launch. |
| #10eldritch_lordJul 16, 2008 13:02:56 | --ignore post--- I find this incredibly funny, given your screen name. Hmm alignments say you... (We'll do it 4th ed style) I prefer 3e style. Lawful Fanboy When picking this alignment, choose a subtype (like Final Fantasy, Warcraft, D&D [particular edition], etc.). A Lawful Fanboy tends to flip out when changes are made to his/her subtype. As a rule, they find any available forum and insist that change is horrible, change is evil, it's just a change for the sake of changing things, etc. Their most frequent arguments are Appeal to Authority and insistence that things must remain the same because that's how they've always been done. They work within the rules, always being just polite enough to ensure that their attackers are warned while they get off without a problem. |
| #11encaraJul 16, 2008 13:36:44 | I prefer 3e style. Alright, now we have something for everyone! |
| #12_jayne_cobb_Jul 16, 2008 13:57:32 | lol ...that may be the case for me, but i very much hate seeing a possible AAA title A game's merit is unaffected by the system on which it is played. get watered down to a shoddy port. And Squenix has done an adequate job of destroying their properties without any help from Microsoft. transform into something similar to the devil that is EA Companies are not devils. |
| #13ADHadhJul 16, 2008 14:09:38 | PC is actually the better platform, that's not true only for about half a year after the new console release :D PC releases are good for those who think buying a machine that you cannot do anything other with than playing games and you can't upgrade is a waste of money. |
| #14shamurai7Jul 16, 2008 14:22:07 | A game's merit is unaffected by the system on which it is played. ok hot shot.....thank god for message boards protecting cowards because if "someone" (im not pointing fingers) tried to pull that arrogant attitude with me i would.....***** so thanks for trying to krap on my thread... it was for people who could sympathize with me, not be pricks about it. | #19lord_mhoram_02Jul 16, 2008 21:51:12 | The days of thrid party exclusivity are fading away. I really hope so. I would love to see the only exclusives be the stuff from the company who makes the system itself. And I find it interesting that the PS3 rage is over a multiplatorm announcement. If it had been a switching platform (like when Square went from Nintendo to Sony) I could understand the upset. But upset because more people can play a game you want to play. ![]() The 360 version of FF XIII is only coming out in Europe and NA. It isn't going to come out in Japan, as there is not much installed userbase for the 360 in Japan. I do know a number of 360 owners who were saying "I'll get a PS3 when FF XIII comes out" that aren't now. Now they are saying "I'll get a PS3 when God of War III comes out". Personally I try not to be closeminded about things like what game console or which RPG system to play. I got a 360 because when I got it last year, the hardware was cheaper, and there were many more games on that platform (I never had an Xbox so the BC was a big decision there). Ever since we got burned buying a Sega CD at launch we wait for 10 must have games before we buy a console. I never worry about who makes or what console it is I'm buying - I follow the games. Whichever console has the games I want to play - I buy it. Edit - if anyone is curious I have 9 on my PS3 list of must buy games. When it hits 10 we are going to start saving for a PS3. |
| #20lord_mhoram_02Jul 16, 2008 21:52:59 | PC is actually the better platform, that's not true only for about half a year after the new console release :D I game on my PC, and I have a PS2 and a 360. ![]() I love the variety and the interesting things I can do on a PC. I love the fact I can put a game disc in, know it will work, and get to playing in a matter of moments on a console. |
| #21TenzhiJul 16, 2008 23:11:06 | so thanks for trying to krap on my thread... it was for people who could sympathize with me, not be pricks about it. So you posted a thread on a message board expecting everyone who posted in it to agree with you and share a drink of hate in your honor? |
| #22nowiwantmydmgJul 17, 2008 1:29:54 | its a sad day when a game that had such potential is going to M$.....those money grabbing pigs have done nothing but krap all over the electronic gaming industry.... I don't ususally go this far, but you've gotten to me so: This is elitist crap. Sony and Microsoft are the same-big faceless corps. Microsoft is a large company that will tromp all over the little guy to make money, true; but that's no different than Sony (Who you obviously support for some reason). Big Corporations like making money, that's exactly what this deal is about. And as for the Microsoft touching stuff turns to crap; the 360 has far and away outsold the PS3(Wii has beat the living **** out of both but that's neither here or there) and their exclusive games (past + present) have been IMO superior to Sony's (Gears of War, Halo, Fable, Jade Empire, etc). And Final Fantasy is cliched, rehashed junk that's been done better a million times before, I really don't get why it's so popular. As for Squaresoft/enix's honor-----are you kidding? How about the honor they showed in jumping from the company that made them successful(nintendo) to their competitor (sony)? |
| #23RyokuJul 17, 2008 2:00:22 | Go ahead and be angry if you want. Me, I'm just happy I get to actually play the game now. |
| #24_jayne_cobb_Jul 17, 2008 9:22:08 | ok hot shot.....thank god for message boards protecting cowards because if "someone" (im not pointing fingers) tried to pull that arrogant attitude with me i would.....***** Disagreeing with you does not make me a "hot shot", "coward", "arrogant", "prick", nor does it merit your insults, threats, and abuse. You might want to dial back the aggro a bit, mate. This really isn't worth getting banned over. |
| #25shamurai7Jul 17, 2008 22:27:27 | So you posted a thread on a message board expecting everyone who posted in it to agree with you and share a drink of hate in your honor? well yeah!!!! pretty much that was my plan...lol.. i like to assume this is a place where i can make a comment, or share my opinion, and other people who are friendly will sympathize with me.....and if they dont, then dont bother posting to begin with....even if compelled to post there is no reason to be arrogant, rude, snyde, or sarcastic to me.... remember what momma said... if you dont have anything nice to say.... hopping into a thread i made to ridicule me does no good....would any of you do that to your friends at their house if they said something you disagreed with? if so then i have to question your friendship.... my buddy just had a kid and named him Ambrosio...i dont ridicule my friends choice in nameing his son...even though i dont like it... |
| #26TenzhiJul 17, 2008 22:53:04 | remember what momma said... if you dont have anything nice to say.... ...then say it on the internet, but don't expect everyone to agree with you. ;) Mother was wise. hopping into a thread i made to ridicule me does no good.... It does as much good as making a thread cursing an unrelated corporate decision and casting sidelong ridicule at something other people enjoy. And by the numbers, more people enjoy that which you are maligning than enjoy the PS3. You're not the victim here, after all. would any of you do that to your friends at their house if they said something you disagreed with? if so then i have to question your friendship... Yes, I would. And then we'd laugh about it and move on. That's the secret to busting chops among friends. |
| #27rainbowcannonJul 17, 2008 23:06:17 | Awesome, now more people can enjoy teh game. Anyone who has a heart attack over news like this is way too invested. It shouldn't bother anyone that now more people can share in an awesome experience. And if the excuse is that they will "dumb it down" then you'd need to realize that they are completing it on ps3 and then porting over to the 360 so no change there. Share the wealth, and is the smartest thing square could have done for their company. |
| #28ranger_regJul 18, 2008 1:23:15 | its a sad day when a game that had such potential is going to M$.....those money grabbing pigs have done nothing but krap all over the electronic gaming industry.... ![]() Meh. I WISH they would have been awesome additions to brawl! and i am glad that the game is accessable to more people...but deep inside i wanted it on just sony's console....when i bought the ps3 it wsa with the thought that i would be able to play all of sony's exclusive titles......and now that they are all being ported to the cheaper console, i dont feel my purchase was justified.....xbox didnt have krap last generation(IMHO, and i thought halo was hot trash) in fact i feel kinda used and played. but as the poster above mentioned it is indeed my nerd rage!! If any of you had purchased a PS3 for the reason of titles you thought to be exclusive, and later found out all those titles were no longer exclusive you would be ticked too. |
| #32TenzhiJul 18, 2008 23:09:59 | If any of you had purchased a PS3 for the reason of titles you thought to be exclusive, and later found out all those titles were no longer exclusive you would be ticked too. I wouldn't be ticked about it if the system I had purchased was worthwhile. So I suppose I can understand your anger to some extent, though I'd say it is misdirected. |
| #33darkangel1979Jul 19, 2008 13:01:05 | What, you expected Square Enix to stick with the loser platform in the platform war? |
| #34shamurai7Jul 19, 2008 13:49:36 | What, you expected Square Enix to stick with the loser platform in the platform war? no i didnt expect that, and since everyones 360 breaks from the rrod error, and all 4 of my friends that own one have had to replace theirs already (one had to replace 3 times then bought a ps3) that the 360 was the loser platform...not to mention there is a monthly fee for the thing to play online.... i have enough bills to pay, i dont need to my game console to be another bill. lol also i am someone who refuses to play WOW because of the monthly fee. and yet the game is hugely successful. so apparently my opinion counts for little as many people play that game. (i have enough to pay for xbox live, and wow, but wont pay because i have principles, so i played guild wars, and bought a ps3) square, in my opinion, should be embarased to release their game on that platform for reasons of belittling the titles name. when women are like that we call them something......and to me it applies in this situation. |
| #35trobonJul 19, 2008 15:20:00 | remember what momma said... if you dont have anything nice to say.... So then why did you come online with nothing nice to say about microsoft. If you have nothing nice to say... |
| #36The_White_SorcererJul 19, 2008 15:51:15 | and i am glad that the game is accessable to more people...but deep inside i wanted it on just sony's console Whippersnapper. Final Fantasy should be exclusive to Nintendo consoles! |
| #37farmer42_dupJul 19, 2008 18:24:48 | If you really believe that you should be left alone for complaining about a MP release instead of an exclusive, you should also stop taking passive aggressive jabs at the 360. And as far as feeling used and played, why? Because they didn't support one console? Because they made a descision that benefits everyone (including you)? Multiconsole means more people buy the game. It then means more money flows into the company, so the company continues making games. We get more great games from the same people. Yes, there are some problems with the system. Everyone has heard about them at this point. It still manages to outsell the PS3, and there are plenty more people who stick with them after RRODs. I'm on my fourth 360 right now, and the only reason I'm going to be getting a PS3 is because I recently got a 42" TV and want a HD movie player as well as a gaming mahine. Compared to other Blu Ray players, the couple of games I'm interested on the console make it a worthwhile purchase. Of the two current gen consoles (no, I don't count the Wii, All it is really is just two gamecubes hooked up with a hard drive and motion sensors; we'll see what their next console looks like,) the 360 is by far the stronger console in every market but Japan, and even then, it still isn't hurting Microsoft to much. Developers are having to make hard descisions right now on where they want to be stronger, sales wise, Japan or the rest of the world, and it looking more and more like even the Japanese developers' are accepting that games on multiple consoles will move much much faster. I mean, we now even have ATLUS releasing on the 360. EDIT: I feel I should add that I hate you all. Now I have to dig out my NES and SNES. I wonder how they'll look on this beast... Maybe I should pick up a cheap old TV... |

I'll only buy an XBOX if they have built-in Wi-Fi, which is an optional accessory, unlike PS3 and Wii which come as part of their standard units. | #42_jayne_cobb_Jul 21, 2008 9:49:31 | and now that they are all being ported Non exclusive ≠ port. to the cheaper console, The "cheaper console" is substantially more successful. Why would Squeenix not want to appeal to that much larger audience? If any of you had purchased a PS3 for the reason of titles you thought to be exclusive, and later found out all those titles were no longer exclusive you would be ticked too. Why? You can still play the games on the system you bought. What difference does it make if they are "exclusive" or not? Does it in any way enhance your enjoyment of the game if the number of other people who can play it is artificially limited? Back in the day I bought a PS2 to play two "exclusive" games: one didn't remain exclusive and the other was canceled. Neither of those affected my ability to play and enjoy the system and the games on it, and there was certainly no reason to flip out and throw a tantrum over it online. i have enough to pay for xbox live, and wow, but wont pay because i have principles, so i played guild wars, and bought a ps3) Paying to play an MMO is not a matter of "principles", and your implication to the contrary is both unwarranted and insulting. |
| #43flamepulse2Jul 21, 2008 10:23:31 | This is what gets me, the PS2 has had a higher defect rate then the 360 but yet sony is still the good guy and can do no wrong. Everybody bashes on the 360 when htey do somthing saying they are evil facists that are jsut trying to make money but yet when sony does the exact same thing they are the best companie in hte whole wide world and we will more then happily pay 600 dollers for a system. I own both systems they both have good games. i bought the 360 a year after release first and waited for about a year to get the PS3 I prefer the 360 because it has a better selection of games and they are cheaper. but i dont hink either is superior over the other at this point. I remeber peole *****ing about hte 360 controller cause it didnt include rechargable batteries. yet the PS3 controller has built in rechargebles(that you cant replace) but when you pay 50 doller s for the controller they give you no way to charge it. that you have to buy sepereatly. MS and FFXIII (not M$, it really annoys me when people put the doller sign in hte place of an s, of course they are trying to make craptons of money all companies do, they are not in it for you they are in it for htemselves anyone that says otherwise is trying to sell you somthing) Square did a fine job of destryoing what was once a phenominal franchise with the release of FFX-2, they are slowly taking everything that made the series goiod and throwing it out with every incarnation. |
| #44generalhenryJul 21, 2008 10:25:48 | Whippersnapper. Final Fantasy should be exclusive to Nintendo consoles! yep yep |

| #46kittenstewJul 21, 2008 17:55:06 | I made the exact opposite post of the OP on another message board, I was happy that FF13 was coming to X-Box 360 and I think it is a good move for Square-Enix. Both 360 and PS3 are impressive consoles, but I went with 360 because of Titles (just got my 360 recently). This is just another happy reason to have a 360 now. With any luck some of their other titles will start coming out multi-platform. |

| #51akodoreignJul 23, 2008 10:07:32 | Trust me, not all PS3 owners are not as mental nor as immature as shamurai7. True enough, but the fact that FFXIII is coming to 360 is a real Coup De Grace. I find it extremely Ironic that last generation all the great RPGs were on the PS2, and FPS were on 360. Now the role is kind of reversed (haze, MGS4, MAG) for PS3 (shooters) (Blue Dragon,Fable 2, Mass Effect, Last Remment(sp), Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean 4, Lost Odyssey) + FFXIII being multi platform. Makes the 360 THE choice for RPGs. I think that's what erks the PS3 fans off the most. They all held on to the fact that THE RPG (final fantasy) was theirs alone. Now it isn't. Least I don't have to shell out 400+ for a system for a single game :D |
| #52lord_mhoram_02Jul 23, 2008 10:19:50 | Now the role is kind of reversed (haze, MGS4, MAG) for PS3 (shooters) 360 - Timeshift, Halo 3, COD4, Blacksite:Area 51. ![]() Not to be a system advocate, but the 360 has a solid list of shooters (even if a few of the ones I like are not that popular). (Blue Dragon,Fable 2, Mass Effect, Last Remment(sp), Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean 4, Lost Odyssey) + FFXIII being multi platform. Makes the 360 THE choice for RPGs. Eternal Arms, Sacred Heart 3, Operation Darkness, Tales of Vesperia. What it looks like to me is the both consoles realized where they were losing to the other one in the previous generation and tried to fill that hole in their game list. Sony getting shooters, and 360 getting RPGs. And in that respect the 360 has done a better job of making sure their previous core market is supported while bringing in the others. We learned years ago to never be loyal to a company or system. We just buy whichever system has the most games we want to play (and we never get systems at launch). |
| #53akodoreignJul 23, 2008 11:06:05 | 360 - Timeshift, Halo 3, COD4, Blacksite:Area 51. Yeah I was not trying to dis the 360 (I have 3 in my home, 1 elite, 1 pro (eldest sons room), 1 arcade unit (back up for rrod). I was saying that it seems that Sony has focused more on doing FPS what they made fun of the American console for last generation. While MS went out of their way to secure RPGs. :D |
| #54kittenstewJul 23, 2008 12:29:58 | Other FPS games that I have enjoyed on 360 are: - Bioshock (Seriously cool and weird atmosphere). - The Darkness (this is multi-platform with PS3). - And Condemed 2 (very short, don't buy it, definately worth a rent though). I am hoping FF-XIII sells really well on X-Box 360 and then they port Kingdom Hearts 3. That would make me brilliantly happy. EDIT: Orange Box (Halflife 2) was pretty good too, and it is multi-platform as well. "The Cake is a LIE!!!" |
| #55elondirJul 23, 2008 13:30:19 | The thing that amazes me is that the OP is talking about Final Fantasy, which has been a cash cow for ages. FF8? Mystic Quest? I'm glad it's multiplatform. I haven't finished FF12 yet. Of course with Lego Indiana Jones in my PS2, I might not bother. |
| #56lord_mhoram_02Jul 23, 2008 14:54:01 | I was saying that it seems that Sony has focused more on doing FPS what they made fun of the American console for last generation. While MS went out of their way to secure RPGs. :D Yeah. I could tell it wasn't a dis. I was agreeing with you that each system went out of thier way to court the styles of the previous gen's main type (360 for RPGs, PS3 for Shooters) - I mean heck, MS bankrolled Mistwalker studios startup to make RPGs for the 360. Then Atlus and Squeenix doing 360 games. We follow the games, and buy systems accordingly - we got a 360 for 2 generations of actions games (I never had an original Xbox) and I knew we had a few RPGs. The fact that the RPG support for the system I happen to have is icing. ![]() Having games that don't appear on the same system actually start to do so it really cool - I remember when Working Designs and Square were making games for the same system - I was in heaven. ![]() |
| #57lord_mhoram_02Jul 23, 2008 14:56:31 | Other FPS games that I have enjoyed on 360 are: I think that one is coming to the PS3 soon too. I agree great game. Our policy has always been not to buy a system until there are 10 must have games for it (from our perspective anyway). We got burned on the Sega CD at launch (paid way to much for it, then very few good games). So we always take a wait and see attitude. We got a 360 last Christmas - we will see about another console in a couple of years - if the PS3 lives up to potential, it might be a PS3... We have 7 must have exclusives on it right now. |
| #58JohnLynchJul 23, 2008 21:13:36 | (Blue Dragon,Fable 2, Mass Effect, Last Remment(sp), Infinite Undiscovery, Star Ocean 4, Lost Odyssey) + FFXIII being multi platform. Makes the 360 THE choice for RPGs. When I do get an eighth generation console it will be interesting to see which one is THE choice for RPGs, as RPGs are the only thing I play. |
| #59shamurai7Jul 23, 2008 22:44:59 | Trust me, not all PS3 owners are not as mental nor as immature as shamurai7. ------ you sure are a swell guy!!! and i can tell your a kind, polite, and educated person! have a nice day!anyway... my list of good exclusives: god of war resistance fall of man...1 and 2 little big planet metal gear solid 4 FF VS killzone 2 white knight heavenly sword drakes fortune twisted metal socom wardevil kingdom hearts 3 blah blah blah...like 20 more i could name but a lot of them are not worth mentioning and suck. with last gen i could name 150 titles...this gen is a bit slim. the 360 has a good sized list of exclusives i would like, but i wont buy a 360 because they all have a lifespan of 1 year before breaking...(slight sarcasm) I also refuse to pay for online..... its a shame because i like the games. i would feel like im parking a ferrari in a trailer park. with the ferrari being the game. 360 is ghetto. |
| #60farmer42_dupJul 24, 2008 0:27:51 | ------ Please stop. What they said was out of line, and a passive aggressive swipe at them doesn't make you or them look any better. the 360 has a good sized list of exclusives i would like, but i wont buy a 360 because they all have a lifespan of 1 year before breaking...(slight sarcasm) I also refuse to pay for online..... Neither does posts like this, where you subtly, then not so subtly insult something you don't like. We get it, you don't like the 360. But, unfortunately for you, over 6,000,000 people in the world disagree with you. And I somehow doubt they all live in the hood, as you imply. |
| #61shamurai7Jul 24, 2008 11:37:54 | Please stop. What they said was out of line, and a passive aggressive swipe at them doesn't make you or them look any better. i meant the adjective.... ghet·to -adjective- 1. cheaply made, and assembled poorly 2. having many problems with its intended function and in fairness my swipe was passive, but no where near agressive!! lol:D |
| #62_jayne_cobb_Jul 24, 2008 12:26:59 | my list of good exclusives: These aren't even out yet. How do you know they are good? 360 is ghetto. You're kidding, right? If you want people to respond to you in a mature manner the best way to accomplish that is not to post immature things like this. i meant the adjective.... From where are you getting this definition, cos "ghetto" is not an adjective in English. Indeed the slang (read: incorrect) use of the word "ghetto" as an adjective is considered to be extremely racist and offensive. and in fairness my swipe was passive, but no where near agressive!! lol:D You might want to look up the definition of "passive aggressive". I would suggest using a better dictionary than the one you used for "ghetto". |
| #63count_arioch_the_28thJul 24, 2008 18:37:11 | After seeing FF11 and FF12, I decided that I wasn't interested in anything Square-enix pinched out. |
| #64count_arioch_the_28thJul 24, 2008 18:45:18 | This is what gets me, the PS2 has had a higher defect rate then the 360 but yet sony is still the good guy and can do no wrong. The PS2 is irrelevant to this discussion. Xbox 360 has a 16.4% failure rate. The PS3 is sitting just under 1%. You're comparing obsolete tech with something modern, of course modern is going to be better. |
| #65alaiacJul 26, 2008 10:59:20 | The real issue at play here has nothing to do with loyalty, honour, or any other such crap. All of the involved parties are corporations, and corporations exist to do one thing. Make money. From a business standpoint, it makes sense to branch out your product so as to gain maximum market penetration. Taken from that point of view, I am certain that if SquareEnix thought the Wii could deliver an adequate experience (from SquareEnix's point of view) for the title in question then it would be headed there as well. |
| #66lil_bunny_fufuJul 26, 2008 11:24:04 | Even though I am a ps3 junkie (had a 360 red ringed on me sent it in came back and red ringed out of the box. Needless to say I took a hammer to it) I am kind of glad it went multi. It gives more people a chance to play a game I enjoy and ps3 has plenty of great exclusives already so give the 360 a break. we got: Drakes uncharted fortune Resistance ratchet and clank hevenly sword metal gear solid devil may cry ( I think thats exclusive) Me personally I don't need a 360, all their exclusive games go to pc anyways. So don't hate just be happy that now you can be a final fantasy fanboy with even more people |
| #67ADHadhJul 26, 2008 13:00:55 | we got: DMC will eventually hit PCs, with Capcom's recent policy and previous ones being already ported. But the rest is exclusive I think. For me there's no reason to buy a gaming console - Street Fighter 4 will have a PC release soon :D |
| #68dalzigJul 26, 2008 13:36:05 | I think the real question is... With PS2's still selling, why isn't FF13 being ported to PS2? :D I mean, surely 140 million units and still selling that should provide a nice boost to sells. Hell, I don't even care how the graphics would look. I still play DOS games. |
| #69minuetJul 26, 2008 15:12:25 | Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not as if Square Enix owes Sony any loyalty anyways. Square Enix is an independant company trying to make money, as someone else pointed out. Also, Square has been around longer than any Playstation system, and actually the first Final Fantasy game was for one of the first two Nintendo systems. My point is that the company will do whatever it can to maximize profits, just as it did when it started making FF games solely (almost, with the exception of a couple for the handheld Nintendo ones) for the PS, and PS2. I honestly wish all games would go "multiplat," just so I could have the chance to enjoy them all, this is unrealistic obviously, but I am ecstatic about FFXIII coming to the 360, as I'm sure a lot of fans of the FF series are who don't own a PS3. And you should be excited as well because more fan support = more games. (Generally) |
| #70annoyinglizardvoiceJul 26, 2008 15:43:11 | I like muti-platform releases. They mean that gamers on different consoles can share the same gaming experience. I'm not going to buy a new console just for one game, so multi-plat releases are a great way for companies to ensure the custom of folks like me. If a game goes multi-plat, be thankful you're going to be able to get it, not furious 'cause the rest of the world is aswell! |
| #71farmer42_dupJul 26, 2008 20:41:20 | . . . the first Final Fantasy game was for one of the first two Nintendo systems. You hit it on the head. the first FF was released for the NES, and competed with Phantasy Star on the SEGA Master System, back in the Bad Old Days(tm), IE, right around the time I was brought into the world. |
| #72count_arioch_the_28thJul 26, 2008 20:54:03 | Actually, Final Fantasy competed with Dragon Quest as well during those times. Which is less relevant considering the two companies merged. |
| #73razal_dazzleJul 26, 2008 21:41:39 | I own a Xbox 360, and for many other reasons I will never get a PS3. Let me explain. I do not live in the ghetto. It would be hard to live in the Ghetto and spend over $500 for a video game system plus the ammount to play on Xbox Live. I am not saying everyone in the ghetto is poor, I am just saying they have more things to worry about other than playing video games. If you want beautiful graphics(realistic) and great Multiplayer then the Xbox is the way to go. All M$ was doing was creating that competetive vibe that weeks at an Arcade could only get you. You know, LEADERBOARDS for Pac-Man, and such. Sony wanted more than a game center, they wanted a full blown entertainment center. They wanted(Like what M$ did with the 360 degrees of Entertainment pitch.) people to go home and turn their system on. and that is where they would spend all of their time. Xbox fell short. But I still can turn on my machine and be in a game within less than a minute. PS3 takes about an hour. What would you play? The PS3's HDMI graphics don't compare to my 360's HDMI grahpics. Sure the blacks(color) display better than the 360, it just looks like JAPAnime plays an important part to PS3 programming. 57" DLP Mitsubishi. That just makes games different than if played on a lower res tv. Why do all Good Guys look like chicks? The graphics just feel too cartoony. I am a gamer, and these are my opinions. I know people will be upset with that, but oh well I am speaking the truth. I love Final Fantasy and this makes it so I don't have to spend 500 just to play one game. |
| #74farmer42_dupJul 26, 2008 21:58:06 | Actually, Final Fantasy competed with Dragon Quest as well during those times. Which is less relevant considering the two companies merged. Well, yes, but DW was on the same platform. I was referring more to that generation's console war. |
| #75count_arioch_the_28thJul 26, 2008 22:33:12 | What console war? You had nintendo fans, and you had people who bought Sega Master Systems somehow when no one sold them. Seriously, I've never seen a sega master system anywhere ever. I've never known anyone who owned one, never saw one being sold in stores, never knew anything about them other than stuff as an adult. I know that the Genesis was a blatantly inferior system that Sega made up lies about to make themselves look better ("Blast Processing" wasn't anything special at all.) |
| #76lil_bunny_fufuJul 27, 2008 0:12:26 | I own a Xbox 360, and for many other reasons I will never get a PS3. Let me explain. I think you may be over generalizing a bit... first off with a ps3 it does not take any more time to get into a game then it does with the 360, I put a game in and it auto starts, very fast. Second saying that all good guys looks like chicks is silly. The game designers decide what the characters look like not the graphics card. Take a look at a few games, snake does not look like a chick, Drake does not, ratchet does not and those are just a few. Personally I have owned both and could not tell much of a difference some games look better on the 360 and some look better on the ps3. I am not a ps3 fanboy I just ask that we not make weird arguments like all ps3 good guys look like chicks, or it takes an hour to start playing a game. |
| #77ranger_regJul 27, 2008 2:17:18 | True enough, but the fact that FFXIII is coming to 360 is a real Coup De Grace. Well, those fans aligned with shamurai7's thinking should get off their high horses and be rid of such ridiculous sense of entitlement, coveting FF like Gollum coveting the One Ring. If a franchise can do well in more than one consoles, they should. There shouldn't be any one good console for the human race, anymore than there should be any one MP3 good players (like that ridiculous Apple iPod, and all the companies accommodating their products to it, from Ford to Blaupunkt). |
| #78dalzigJul 27, 2008 3:53:07 | I think you may be over generalizing a bit... first off with a ps3 it does not take any more time to get into a game then it does with the 360, I put a game in and it auto starts, very fast. Unless you're talking about Devil May Cry or MGS4. Those preloads are killer from what I hear. But yeah... other than preloading, the load times are very comparable, maybe even better on the PS3. |
| #79minuetJul 27, 2008 10:32:22 | As I said in my earlier post, Final Fantasy started on Nintendo. Thus, it's not unprecedented for the multiplatform. And to suggest that Final Fantasy "belongs" to PS owner's is completely unfair, because clearly Final Fantasy belongs to no one, just based on the jump from Nintendo to Sony back in the 90's. If you like a game (or series of games) so much, wouldn't you want more fan support for it? |
| #80The_White_SorcererJul 27, 2008 10:43:00 | Aren't some of the older games also sort of multiplat? I-II and IV-VI at least were released at some point for both Nintendo and PS. |
| #81kittenstewJul 27, 2008 12:53:15 | It's funny, cuz PS3 fanboys rave about how much better the PS3 is compared to XBox, but really, if you do a little honest research, the difference is nominal at best. Biggest differences are as follows: 1) Blue Ray Player (PS3) - OK, I admit this is pretty cool. I may get one just for this feature at some point. And now that $ony has squashed their competition (HDDVD) it seems like Blue Ray is the HD medium of choice (Yes, Sony is easily as "Big Corporation" evil as M$). 2) Architecture - The systems process information a little differently, but in all honesty, both systems are pretty kick-ass powerful and it is difficult to declare either side as better here. At best you could say you prefer one better than the other, but if you do ... it is just an opinion. 3) Noise - The XBox360 fan is bloody loud dude. 4) Controllers - XBox uses regular batteries that can be changed on the fly (I have rad plug and play rechargables that charge while I play). PS3 controllers have built in batteries (that have caused service issues) but the controllers are also a little tilt sensitive (seems like a poor Wii ripoff, but it is still there if any developers feel the need to use it). 5) Durability - XBox360 has had some issues with systems crapping out for no good reason (I know a guy that has gone through 6 of these) but thank god the warranty is good for a nice long 3 years. I have not heard of this problem with PS3. Supposedly, the newer 360s are better, with smaller processors and larger heat syncs. Mine is new, but time will tell if this problem has been fixed or not. 6) Development - I have read that the tools for creating games on the XBox360 are extremely good, and most multi-platform titles are developed for Xbox AND THEN ported over to PS3. It is also desirable to develop for XBox because it is so easy to port over to PC. 7) Titles - XBox 360 wins this hands down. I have played some seriously killer fun XBox games lately. It also has some really good titles that are XBox Exclusive. See earlier in this same thread for examples. Personally, I can't wait for Fable 2. And Mass Effect is ridiculously cool. Most of the other good titles seem to be multi-platform (now including FF13 - and possibly other Square-Enix games to follow). Seriously though, gaming is all about the titles. I'm not saying PS3 is a bad system (quite honestly I think it is a remarkable system), it's just that XBox has way better titles. When PS3 catches up, I might get one. Oh, and for the record...I'm not even a little bit ghetto. PS: I really hope FF XIII sells really well on 360, and that Square-Enix decides to make Kingdom Hearts 3 multi-platform. Wheeeeeeeeee.... |
| #82dalzigJul 27, 2008 13:18:24 | Don't forget that Microsoft knows how to make press conferences interesting. Playable demos out the wazoo. That's what E3 is about. Sony's press conference? "Just give us a couple more years to get things rolling! Please!" Granted, they had some great info about movie rental/purchases... but that has nothing to do with gaming. Nintendo's press conference? I watched about 15 minutes then quit. Pathetic. |
| #83minuetJul 27, 2008 18:26:00 | Nintendo has been steadily losing my respect since I bought the Gamecube whenever it was first released (can't remember the year). While I have no problem with family-friendly titles, it just seems that Nintendo's entire marketing plan is "Appeal to Children." I'm not speaking about every game they produce, but the majority just doesn't interest me as much as it would when I were say, 10. I will never play a Zelda game again, not because they aren't great, but because I can't bring myself to buy a system for 1-2 games. The same goes for PS3 and Final Fantasy. Now that it's multiplat, I'm quite content, and as Kittenstew said, I hope it's sells really well, so maybe Square will continue to multiplat their fantastic RPG's to the Xbox. |
| #84lil_bunny_fufuJul 27, 2008 22:27:25 | Unless you're talking about Devil May Cry or MGS4. Those preloads are killer from what I hear. The pre loads can be a bit heavy never more then 10 to 15 minutes (and that is more then I have seen so far, the longest I have seen was 5 minutes), and that mainly sets the game up so other loads are faster. I am willing to sacrifice some time in the beginning to shorten the time at those really cool moments in the game a hard core cut scene that gets you amped for a boss fight can loose some flair if the loading time is too long in my humble opinion. |
| #85falstyrJul 27, 2008 22:41:30 | Hmm... I could be bothered about this as a FF-fan. Then again...FF12 had the worst combat system. No matter how good the story, but if the game play is awefull then it doesn't really matter. Either do it right or don't do it. Don't fix what isn't broken and more of such cliche's. So if FF13 isn't improved then to me it doesn't even matter if it is released as a multi-platform title or not. Still I can understand why people feel "used" as if Square sold them out to the highest bidder. But the x360 isn't that bad of a console. Got one for two years and never had a problem with it. As an RPG'er I'm really glad there are suddenly an uprise in RPG's. The Final Fantasy game would've been the only reason for me to get a PS3, because...well...the only other system seller is Metal Gear Solid 4. So even if the machine is better the game offer sure isn't. And what do you buy a game console for anyway? But like someone sarcastically noted...had the same type of discussion when Square started to develop for Sony instead of Nintendo. So really...who cares? |
| #86count_arioch_the_28thJul 27, 2008 22:50:08 | About the PS3 blue ray? I can get a blue ray burner for my computer for half the price. I already have a high-def monitor, and an empty drive slot on my tower... |
| #87ranger_regJul 28, 2008 0:11:25 | the 360 has a good sized list of exclusives i would like, but i wont buy a 360 because they all have a lifespan of 1 year before breaking...(slight sarcasm) I also refuse to pay for online..... Meh. Your prerogative. I'd rather have more choices than be given only one choice. |
| #88ranger_regJul 28, 2008 0:13:51 | About the PS3 blue ray? A blu-ray burner for under $300??? Are you communicating from the future? :P Tell me, will there be 32-inch 1080p 120Hz HD TV for under $400 when you at? |
| #89count_arioch_the_28thJul 28, 2008 0:40:55 | A blu-ray burner for under $300??? Are you communicating from the future? :P When you go back to your time, tell Leif Eriksson that in the year 2008, LG will offer one for $259 dollars through the Newegg website. Also, Lite-on offers one for $299.99, which is technically less than $300. If I wanted to forgo the burner, I could get a blue-ray player for less than $200. |
| #90falstyrJul 28, 2008 0:54:15 | And in Europe a BD isn't interesting yet, because HD tv's have just become a standard object. Prices are dropping fast past few months. While in the USA it has been for a longer time. And with anything less then a Full HD television a Blue Ray or MS's HDvd isn't even worth getting. So that whole discussion has been pretty mote and will remain just that untill at least christmas. By then the BD should've dropped in price as well making it a lot more interesting to get as a stand a lone player. Really...Game consoles are to play games on. Who gives a rats ass about the useless multimedia aspects? It only adds hardware that jacks up the price of the console AND increases potential hardware increasing the risk of console failure. And what's the use of adding all those nice multimedia gadgets when most people have all that stuff already in their homes anyway? A game console should remain just that...games. Not an idolized dvd player or music box, because I got a lot better stand alone stuff for that which gives a lot more quality as well. |
| #91kittenstewJul 28, 2008 9:51:12 | Really...Game consoles are to play games on. Who gives a rats ass about the useless multimedia aspects? And what's the use of adding all those nice multimedia gadgets when most people have all that stuff already in their homes anyway? You make a fine point sir. BUT, I know people that do use their console as basically their entire home entertainment system because they don't want to invest in all that other stuff. I guess it is a matter of what you want, need, and can afford. As long as the console doesn't get so expensive that only the well-to-do can afford it. I doubt that would ever happen though, because the console producers do want to reach as wide an audience as possible. |

Right now, MS, Sony, and Nintendo are all loosing money on their consoles and portables, per sale. The consoles are marked down way below cost while accessories are marked up. Games are also priced fairly close to production costs, at least for the first year or so. Then the development cycle has (hopefully) been paid for and they're back to profit. |
| #93count_arioch_the_28thJul 28, 2008 23:32:29 | You know, people have been saying that the game companies have lost money on every console sold for about fifteen years now, and it doesn't sound any less ridiculous no matter how many times I hear it. That's just a gamer urban legend, they've been saying that since the SNES days. It's not true. There's about fifteen bucks of plastic and silicon in a game system, they're making their money. |
| #94ranger_regJul 29, 2008 1:54:02 | Also, Lite-on offers one for $299.99, which is technically less than $300. But is it good? What's the review? Actually, I'm looking for a blu-ray burner for my laptop. |
| #95farmer42_dupJul 29, 2008 2:38:31 | You know, people have been saying that the game companies have lost money on every console sold for about fifteen years now, and it doesn't sound any less ridiculous no matter how many times I hear it. As someone who actually sells the things, I can guarantee that we're selling them at a loss. |
| #96count_arioch_the_28thJul 29, 2008 9:06:33 | As someone who actually sells the things, I can guarantee that we're selling them at a loss. I don't believe you. Sorry. |
| #97count_arioch_the_28thJul 29, 2008 9:09:38 | But is it good? What's the review? Looked at a couple reviews, there seems to be compatibility issues with Vista, but it seems to roughly do the job. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827106254 |
| #98razal_dazzleJul 29, 2008 9:14:58 | I think you may be over generalizing a bit... first off with a ps3 it does not take any more time to get into a game then it does with the 360, I put a game in and it auto starts, very fast. I apologize. I know the graphics card does not render the girly animations. I played MGS4, and Uncharted. They both were glorious, and it felt so cinematic. I guess what I was really trying to do is promote the 360. For me the PS3 is a single-player game machine. I know the games load faster I was just being silly. I have had poor experiences with the playstation network, but never with 360. I guess that is what I pay for. |
| #99shamurai7Jul 29, 2008 12:32:44 | Aren't some of the older games also sort of multiplat? I-II and IV-VI at least were released at some point for both Nintendo and PS. well this would not bother me as much because nintendo is also a japanese company.. I just dont like the coveted japanese title to be on the xbox. At least i know that microsoft payed dearly to square to have this game be non-exclusive. But when you are rolling in disposable income i suppose you can throw cash at all your problems and competition. I guess im a fan of the less wealthy underdoggs. Sony cant afford to just buy out every game they want. And yet they offer a very nice console and dont charge for online. in my mind heres the comparison. MS = rich guy will charge you 15 a month to lick the sweat from his... so far this plan is working splendid! the sweat tastes like $$$ and people feel good when licking it. SONY = middleclass guy makes an honest sale at a loss to promote customer loyalty and is being outdone by the rich competition. If he could only sweat $$$ then he could use it to make the the product better rather than try charging people to lick it. NINTENDO = lowclass guy comes up with fun affordable gimmick and thrives on "peripherals" this guy sells more than anyone on a stroke of luck but we have no idea what he is doing with his money. He is feeding none of his profit into his product will likely have an unpleaseant demise. for the record i do own all 3 consoles, but my xbox is broke, and my nintendo has had 2 remotely decent titles since the launch lineup...(smash bros and mariokart) |
| #100_jayne_cobb_Jul 29, 2008 12:42:25 | You know, people have been saying that the game companies have lost money on every console sold for about fifteen years now, and it doesn't sound any less ridiculous no matter how many times I hear it. Doesn't make it any less true. They take a loss on consoles cos they make a killing on software. However, corporate greed being what it is, and with gaming now being mainstream, companies are no longer willing to take the same loss they once did when gaming was a niche market. Gone are the days they sold a system at a loss just to hook in a new games buyer, they know they've got a built-in market of millions of gamers who will buy both games and console regardless of the price. That's just a gamer urban legend, they've been saying that since the SNES days. It's not true. There's about fifteen bucks of plastic and silicon in a game system, they're making their money. It isn't an urban legend. The manufacturers don't just get a hug pile of raw materials dumped on their doorstep, they need to buy and source parts from a number of manufacturers and they all cost money. |

| #103The_White_SorcererJul 29, 2008 13:02:52 | I just dont like the coveted japanese title to be on the xbox. But if it's still on the PS, what's the friggin problem? Propably just unwillingness to share, I reckon. Shame on you. |
| #104kittenstewJul 29, 2008 13:30:21 | SONY = You are joking right? $ony as Honest? Do you seriously think they don't do big business like M$ does? I know they aren't quite as big, but they are plenty evil themselves... I'm more than sure they went out of their way to squash HDDVD format so blu-ray would be the only HD medium out there. They struck a deal with Wal-Mart (also, one of the princes of evil) to only carry blu-ray (and others as well). Now HDDVD can't compete. But we wouldn't want HDDVD to have a monopoly or anything... (sarcasm). Then there was that whole secretly having their CD's install software that put a "rootkit" on your computer. And then when people complained, their "fix" was a program that is now classified as malicious spyware. All this just so they can control how you listen to music and track your listening patterns. Disgraceful. Sony’s consolidated sales in the U.S. for the fiscal year ended March 31, 2008 were $29 billion. So it isn't like they are the small, helpless, victims that you are making them out to be. I'm not saying Microsoft is any better, but IMHO, neither company is "Honest." Nor does either company promote "Customer Loyalty" from me. |
| #105_jayne_cobb_Jul 29, 2008 13:38:48 | your right....im psychic, racist, a slang user, offensive, incorrect, immature, I cannot recall making any such accusations against you. and i also have a dictionary that is not as good as yours..... I never claimed I was "superior" to anyone. since im psychic i know that those games will be good. being psychic involves playing previous versions of a game, or closely following development of a game. Noe of which means anything. There is a vast difference between something looking like it will be good and actually being good. You do not know how good anything is until you experience it. Kind of like how a weatherman is psychic. Weathermen are wrong 60% of the time on-average . i would like to write more of my opinions about how i think this is a shame that microsoft can just buy anything they want, but i need to go to meet up with my father (who is black) at the "ghetto" hospital to visit my mother (shes also black) and keep her company. Good for you, your mother, and your father. Being black does not make "ghetto" in that context less of a pejorative. Just cos you don't find it offensive doesn't mean it is not. If you are getting so bent out of shape over people not agreeing with you, I think you may be on the wrong internet. |

| #109lil_bunny_fufuJul 29, 2008 23:46:43 | I apologize. No worries I see your side and respect it, you are correct in saying 360 is better for multi player games but me I grew up playing single players or with a couple friends in the same room. And to me that is where the fun is. And in my humble opinion 360 has some games I want to play like mass effect but I think ps3 has more to offer the single player crowd. If I want multi player games I get on my comp but like I said I concede the fact that the 360 is great at online play it's just the amazing single player ones that I am into on my ps3 I know this is heresy but I have more fun playing my wii (super smash brothers) with my friends at my house then I did playing halo 3 online I just got wore out of online play from games like Everquest and WoW |
| #110akodoreignJul 30, 2008 9:11:54 | You are joking right? $ony as Honest? Do you seriously think they don't do big business like M$ does? I know they aren't quite as big, but they are plenty evil themselves... I agree totally, Can we say exploding Dell + Apple batteries. Sony is in it for the cash. If they were not making money they wouldn't be in the game. I am curious though. If the flag ship sank (say in the next few years due to lack of exclusives.) Would Blue Ray be viable? That's a huge if question, Since Sony has a Ton of money and would do everything they could to keep it alive (they have a poor track record for formats) |
| #111falstyrJul 30, 2008 10:09:24 | Companies making a loss on products IS a myth, well at least on the long term. Short term they indeed do make relative minor losses which get covered by other branches of said company. So the company as a whole still makes enough profits. But within a year the game products start making profit on their own. It is a basic marketing technique. The reason why Blue Ray would be the blatant obvious winner against the HDVD is because BR was developed as a co-operative product. Co-operative meaning developed by the biggest leading companies on the planet. You expect that one "rogue" developer with his HDvD would win a battle against a large manifested opposition which has the shares of the market? It's like decennia ago with the tape recorders. You had one which was the market leader and the others died a quiet death in a time span of a few years. And that death in this generation will be on HDvd. If you're smart you'll just wait till the prices drop for the BR-players and buy it. At this time it isn't more then a nice new "worthless" gadget so why waste loads of money on it? Unless you're a gadget-***** who needs the latest stuff to show it off. Sony was a generation too early to implement BR as well. There aren't games to be developed to even fill the discs. It has no added value yet. It is like those 3d-hologram tv's which they are developing right now. I'll skip the BR and wait until it is usable for the next generation tv's. Blue Ray will be viable. It isn't only a PS3 gadget you know. They're also available as stand-alone ;) Now that will blow you away I'm sure :D |
| #112lil_bunny_fufuJul 30, 2008 10:28:41 | PS2 did the same thing with the dvd when it came out I was still only buying vhs but once I picked up a ps2 I started getting dvds and now with my ps3 I am starting to pick up blue rays. So The ps3 may have brought the BR too early but to me it save me money. In my opinion it is a cheap BR player, the 360 is 299.99 while the ps3 is 499.99 with a wi-fi adapter the 360 is 399 that means I only payed $100 extra too get a BR player that is a great deal to me. Or if you go for a 40g ps3 is is only 399 that means the a 360 + wi-fi adapter is the same price (or more for the elite) meaning the BR player is basically free. |
| #113count_arioch_the_28thJul 30, 2008 10:50:16 | It isn't an urban legend. The manufacturers don't just get a hug pile of raw materials dumped on their doorstep, they need to buy and source parts from a number of manufacturers and they all cost money. Yeah, and it costs them maybe $25-$30 bucks per system to buy all the parts. No one who has ever claimed that video game companies have lost all sense of business and reason and sold product at a loss has posted any proof of this. Which means I automatically don't believe it. Like you people keep telling me, just because you say it doesn't make it true. |
| #114_jayne_cobb_Jul 30, 2008 11:20:15 | Yeah, and it costs them maybe $25-$30 bucks per system to buy all the parts. Based on what data? No one who has ever claimed that video game companies have lost all sense of business and reason and sold product at a loss has posted any proof of this. Which means I automatically don't believe it. It is not "los(ing) all sense of business and reason", it is called a "loss leader". Look it up, we'll wait. :whatsthis Back? Good. Let's carry on. Companies like MS and Sony can afford to lose several hundred dollars on a system cos they make up that amount several times over on software. If they price the system at-cost or above then fewer people buy them. The amount of cash they make selling fewer systems at a profit is nowhere near what they make selling them at a loss and making profit on a greater volume of software sales. This was a fairly necessary model back when video games were a niche market, but gaming has gone mainstream now. There are so many people buying video games that they can afford to sell systems at-cost or at-profit cos they are selling a ridiculously large number of both systems and software. Like you people keep telling me, just because you say it doesn't make it true. Just cos you don't understand it doesn't make it false. |
| #115falstyrJul 30, 2008 11:43:12 | Sony and MS don't make profit with the software. Sure it generates most of the income the first year, and afterwards, but in the first year it still doesn't allow them to close the gap of the loss they make on each console. Luckily these companies have other branches as well which make profits. Those other branches allow the entire company to still make a profit. Then after a year when the hardware costs go down and the prices of the consoles don't really drop that much they can get even on the consoles and make profits with the software. The second year prices drop and also the prices of the consoles start to drop and that time the companies make profit on both hardware+software. Now Nintendo...they make consoles which are meant for games only without the additional (in my eyes) media junk hardware. So Nintendo makes hardware profits since day one. It is a strategy which each company decides for themselves. And each comes with different marketing/administrative tasks. |
| #116count_arioch_the_28thJul 30, 2008 16:59:05 | Alright, since you people seem to be a bit dense here, I'm spelling it out. Give me hard evidence that game companies lose money on each console sold. I don't want to read about loss leader or any other waste of cranial capacity, I want documented proof that they lose money on each system. If you can't do that, you're lying. End of discussion. |
| #117ranger_regJul 30, 2008 18:15:00 | Sony was a generation too early to implement BR as well. Better to have it a generation too early than a generation too late. Which means I want a burner soon to archive loads of data and files I have. I can't always keep buying a new large-capacity external hard drive, which soon fill up. That way I can use it on any PC with BR drive. |
| #118ranger_regJul 30, 2008 18:17:29 | Give me hard evidence that game companies lose money on each console sold. I don't want to read about loss leader or any other waste of cranial capacity, I want documented proof that they lose money on each system. How can they lose money when they fix the price that stores cannot discount, except a few pennies (like when everyone is selling PS2 for $129.99, Wal-Mart rollback to a mere $129.88 ... 11 cents less)? The same goes for the "ever popular selling" iPods and Zunes. :rolleye2: |
| #119shamurai7Jul 30, 2008 18:19:10 | Alright, since you people seem to be a bit dense here, I'm spelling it out. ok hot shot.... nintendo pockets about 60 or 70 dollars a console... microsoft pockets about 40 or 50... used to lose 40 or 50 but production is cheaper sony shells out around 90 to 100...used to shell out over 150 a unit but production is cheaper now. ill even put in the first link i found since you dont know how to navigate the internet. http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/06/28/news_6128295.html |
| #120ranger_regJul 30, 2008 18:30:31 | ok hot shot.... So? ![]() As quoted from the article you linked, "It is normal for game companies to take a loss on hardware whenever a new console launches, since they typically focus on acquiring market share rather than generating a profit during the first year. During the second year and afterward, they can recover the losses with the savings that come from mass production and with licensing fees from publishers." |
| #121count_arioch_the_28thJul 30, 2008 19:54:49 | Now, was that so hard? | #124shamurai7Jul 31, 2008 1:32:30 | well on the neutral side i recomend soul calibur 4 to anyone who likes fighters!!!!! character creation is AWESOME! you can make some cool looking dnd characters and get a picture of them. game looks amazing on the ps3 and i heard its pretty good on the 360 also (if yours isnt broke like mine) half of my gaming group was over today and we had a blast making our dnd characters. games like this dont burn me when they are multiplat. you can get the most out of them on pretty much any console from the ps3 to the wii. a fighter, sports title, racers..... they dont come near 9 gigs so are not hampered... but first person shooters, long action games, and rpg's with long storys and open world environments suffer when they are ported. the problem is developers try to make them identical on each console, so if 1 console has more potential in certain areas, then you will never see that potential used. MGS4 would have taken 3 or 4 regular dvd's and if it was on both consoles it wouldnt have been as nice. i think this will happen with FF... i really hope they release on more than 1 disc rather than trying to compact the title and give the ps3 users less of an experience. the dialogue and high res videos alone will likely take up 10 gigs. and thats not even gameplay. |
| #125ADHadhJul 31, 2008 8:31:37 | (...) but first person shooters (...) Playing first person shooters with a pad is either a sin or a penalty. Period. :P |

I don't think this will happen (at least I hope it doesn't). I can't see them compacting the game just for us 360 users. The game is being released in Japan first on PS3 only. The international releases in North America and Europe will be simultaneous between PS3 and 360 from what I have read. I imagine they will do it like Lost Odyssey, where there is 4 or 8 (can't remember) disks for the game. That is one of the cool things about the PS3 - No game ever made, nor any game that will be made for a while, will fill up a whole Blu-ray disk. I don't mind switching disks though, I did it lots for FF-VII. ![]() |

The developers are only realizing the potential of PS3's Blu-Ray disc feature despite PS3 being in the market for just one year. Whether they'll exploit the feature is up to individual developers, but I prefer game to be multiplat rather than proprietary (yes, Microsoft, including your XBOX exclusive HALO). Just as I would rather have a Luther Vandross song be played on any MP3 player, not just on iPod. |

| #137shamurai7Jul 31, 2008 19:50:27 | well companies have presidents and executives that run them. And some companies are in fact ran by better people. I cant personally vouch for anyone from sony, ms, or nintendo, but personally i do not like the way americans do business in general, or on average. traditions, honor, and pride have little meaning in the US compared to japan. its just a cultural difference. i see a reflection of this in many products from game consoles to motor vehicles. im sure you can all point out exceptions to this, but im grading on a curve and those exceptions are outliers. this is a stereotype, but im sure there are good people in MS, as well as bad people in SONY. but as a culture i like japan much more. feel free to share your opinions, but dont criticize my opinion |
| #138farmer42_dupJul 31, 2008 21:41:00 | If you don't want anyone to criticize your opinion, then you shouldn't share it. By sharing your opinion, you open yourself up to discourse, which includes criticisms. That said, dude, Japanese automakers are more honourable than American auto makers? Do you know why each Japanese automaker has three or four brands under their names, Like Toyota with Lexus and Scion? It isn't because they ate the other companies, like the American companies. It's so that they can get around import/export tarrifs and laws. It's still a company, and they'll do anything they can for margin. Different companies have different means of attaining margin, but the ultimate goal is not a happy consumer, it's margin. End of story. |

MS offerred enough that they would be stupid to turn it down. |

(i went there and never saw one of these) consent at 13 sounds believable, that was normal in most cultures up untill this century, so in that sense we are the odd ones. We still have states with blood relatives and first cousins getting married through commonlaw marriage. The death sentence, and Legal prostitution in areas. its very uncommon, but i wouldnt judge our whole culture on freak occurrences with odd state laws. "i heard in the US people marry their own sisters, and if you commit serious crime they kill you. And if you want some action you can get it on any corner!" sounds funny to us...because thats not the norm. |
| #142farmer42_dupAug 01, 2008 0:05:41 | Customer satisfaction is only a consideration because it tends to drive margin. Business models are designed such that return custom is the goal, and the easiest path there is satisfaction. Failing satisfaction, the next step is ease. After that we have availability, which encompases product and cost. Wal-Mart has a model based off of availability to drive consumer returns, not service or ease of shopping, though the latter is factored into the design of the store. How you keep customers is an inexact science, and companies constantly shift in an effort to accomodate them as best they can, or to at least cement their position, and believe me, Japan is just as bad about it as America. Oh, and the panty thing? Not a myth. |

Second off, Japanese law allows first cousins to be ACTUALLY married, and that is not considered abnormal at all, in America, it might happen, but it's considered aberrant. If they fault us on incest, then I don't know how to respond to that. |
| #149Mournblade94Aug 02, 2008 11:23:36 | its a sad day when a game that had such potential is going to M$.....those money grabbing pigs have done nothing but krap all over the electronic gaming industry.... Oh I know! By the gods MSoft has RUINED gaming. THat oblivion is a piece of crap!!! The XBOX 360 graphics are so much worse than XBOX. You could actually be stopped by a mop bucket in XBOX, now XBOX 360 lets you kick it out of the way, How STOOOPID!!! Then they put out mass effect. You know what I hate... Video games are ruined. I have so many buttons I don't know what to do with them. 2 sticks? How do you play a video game with 2 STICKS!!!! Why can't they just go back to one stick and a nice red button. Video games used to be slow mazes, now they FORCE yes FORCE you to play a character in a movie. You can't make your own decisions like you used to be able to, like left, right, up, down, now they force you into playing with full 360 degree movements. And don't forget the REAL games like ZORK. There you had to READ, and your imagination had much better graphics than movie quality HD ever could. Ruined. Curse them. |
| #150BloodsoulAug 02, 2008 21:31:15 | ZORK FTW. Alright, so now FFXIII is reason #4 for me getting a 360. One, was Sneak King, which I've been dying to play for I don't know how long. Two, was the limited edition of SoulCalibur IV which I've already experienced on a friend's 360. Aside from the oddly named shoulder buttons, play IV was no different than playing III on the PS2. Reason three is Street Fighter IV. Well, atleast I THINK it's coming out for the 360. If not, then, oh well. (Granted, I just got SCIV today and it was their last copy; had it been the PS3 version, then I probably would've gotten that. Still, my friends are three states away and I rarely get to see them, so being able to play them online will be quite enjoyable, something I probably couldn't do with a PS3 [unless they picked up that version, too]) |

While where out it, lets call Square Enix greedy evil company out for only wanting to make more money and profit, kind of like what company are suppose to do. Also, why would to bring up final fantasy to the D&D website? You play the same god damn role every game. Some trouble youth hippy trying to take down a large evil power "corporation, empire, its all the same thing" from getting the ultimate power that will destroy the world. Possibly by killing the planet, or just killing everyone. |

These points have already been established. It is nice to see it all paraphrased so concisely, I guess. Also, why would to bring up final fantasy to the D&D website? Possibly by killing the planet, or just killing everyone. This is the off topic tavern. Prettymuch anything goes as long as it is within the COC, at least as far as I understand it. It is the perfect place to bring up Final Fantasy, which I might add, a lot of us enjoy. |

To be quite honest, I've already fought against Yoda before while playing on my friend's 360; curbstomping him seems quite effective. Second, I'm not in for SW, I'm in it for Tira and Create-A-Soul. I can't wait to remake the Harley Quinn costume I gave her at my friend's house. :D |
