| #2LFKJul 27, 2011 12:17:18 | You're evil. Why did you make me watch Jar-Jar Binx? Yeah, soon-ish I'm planning on doing an episode that's going to take a bunch of the current batch of "stuff happens" effects-driven movies and really try to disassemble the formula. I still have yet to see Dark of the Moon or Captain America, though, so we'll see. I might just end up using Revenge of the Fallen as the center piece, since it's basically the ur-example to date, but that kinda feels like kicking a dead horse, even if I haven't seen many attempts to actually break it down structurally. That might be the saving grace for an episode like that, especially since the typical response is an exasperated "WHY ARE YOU SEEING THIS?!" and not an actual "wait, why are people seeing this?" The best I've seen so far, and it is brilliant, is this article on io9. The author is mostly mocking the movie, but hits on some very salient points about many of the elements of the film standing in for the id, ego, insecurity, and so on. Honestly I think if I go down that rabbit hole the final conclusion will be that it's basically like watching sports: the linear nature of the experience is enough narrative for the target audience, who's really just looking for a visceral experience; a football game doesn't have a plot, but it does have conflict, a beginning, and an end. I like all the addons you had. How long does montage take? Editing an episode like this one or Brain Candy takes about five hours, including at least one significant interruption or setback. It goes much faster depending on how many mistakes I made in the actual recording and how dilligent I was gathering and preparing samples before hand, or way slower if I didn't do any gathering first. Gathering clips, and getting them formatted probably takes another 2-3 hours, but that's usually spread out over the week. Research and script writing is likely about 20 hours, maybe way more or way less, depending on what you count. Lights of Endangered Species took closer to 10 hours to edit, mostly because of a corrupted sector in one of the clips that caused a system lock-up every time I scrolled the playback head across that section of video in the timeline. That ate up easily 3 hours of productivity from work I had to re-do, the constant re-starts, troubleshooting, and fixing the problem. Until the Lion Learns to Speak only took about 2.5 hours to edit, excluding an entire finished version of the show that I did with the puppet but discarded. As far as the eyes are concerned, storyline wise FH's eyes broke after watching Transformers and Revenge of the Fallen back-to-back, but really I just wanted to call attention to the hours I spent building the lighting system into his head. Thanks for watching, and the feedback! I've got a long list of things to improve, so it's nice to see if I'm on the right track. |

And I think I avoided including any of the shots with him where he had glowing green eyes, but yeah I had to sift through thirty odd commercials with him and nother kid that looked very similar. |
