I will start us off by selecting three films I love.
Suspiria~Dario Argento (1977 I think)/Witchcraft, ultraviolence, sex, and lots and lots of gore. It is very appropraite for the halloween season. Basic plot follows a girl who discovers that her school of dance is actually a cover for nasty witch coven. Very classic. It also is kind of the start of a milestone in Dario's career that really sets the pace for his other films. In fact, it is a the start of a trilogy that took 30 years to finish (the final piece of it "Mater Lachrymarum, The Third Mother" I just got for my Bday this past June very close to its release date). It takes a particular type of fan to reallhy enjoy Dario, but if you like this film there are many others I can reccomend. dario was also the first director to ever use CGI, has always pushed the envelope. Maybe I will make a second post with some others after some other folks have had a chance to reply.
Ju-on~Takashi Shimizu (2000). This is a Japanese film that the US film "The Grudge" was based off of. It is a fantastic film about the haunting of a single location and at its very core its a revenge story that plays out in a way that has a confused and wronged ghost taking out revenge on everyone as a way of trying to find peace. Its a very cool film and superior to the US version IMHO. Not that the us film was bad. But tghis film is certainly creepy and worth a gander with your candy treats this holiday.
Ill finish off with a popular one..
The Shining Stanley Kubrick (not sure when, I think the 80's) Another ghost story about a man going insane and being tormented by large group of ghosts. Lots to explore here, and all ina ll a fantastic look at haunting and cabin fever all in one. Also is sort of a think piece as well, definately a worthy horror film.
Would love to here some other movies and favorites fromt he rest of the folks here. I really need some inspiration for my halloween film party this year. I am hoping maybe I can steal a gem from someone here. I am three films short for my marathon halloween weekend.

2. The Thing - 1982 version
Dread and paranoia punctuated by sudden and memorable outbursts of gore.
3. The Sixth Sense
Even after its twist is revealed, it still works. It might be Bruce Willis' best perfom`ance.

The name might be a bit of a throw off but it's more discussion than a concise list (As a movie-buff, and specifically horror, I love discussing films). Would love to consolidate if need be... if this takes off instead of mine, I'll try to bring over some recommendations that people listed for reference.Didn't see you growing there, and consolidation sounds great. no point in having two!
