Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the forums and also to 4e and would like a little help.

Last time I touched a PnP RPG was just as 3e was being released, I was an avid 2e and 1e player but then didn’t care much for the rules changes at the time.

Needless to say 14 years later my wife out of a sense of nostalgia gave me the 3 core rule books for 4e and some dice for Christmas, so I am trying to get back into it again.

Now here is where my problem begins.

I would really like to get my wife into the game because I know that she would love it if she were to give it a chance; however at a glance she found the rules a little intimidating.

I figure that I could just roll up a character for her to get her started.

Which leads me to my next problem.

I don't have a group (well aside from potentially my wife)

I am more into role-playing than roll-playing and fondly remember from my 2e days my adventures as Thorim the Dwarvin Warrior and all his adventures during the War of the Lance on Ansalon.

So what I want to do is find a couple of like minded local people (none of my friends have the time to commit or the desire to play.) So I would like to meet some locals to form a group for a couple of sessions a month.

I want to DM a "never ending" campaign and enjoy doing it all homebrew, however I was planning on picking up the 3 premade Heroic adventures just too kind of get my hopefully new groups creative juices flowing.

So where do I meet local players? I have stopped by the local game shop on a couple of different occasions and found not much help; the people honestly weren’t even feigning interest in "Players seeking Players" or at least in "Players they don't know seeking other Players".
I might go back a few more time to see if I can't open them up a bit to find some folks to play with but honestly I am not optimistic

I am hopeful that I will be able to find a couple of more semi like minded players and also to show my wife why RPGing is so much fun, would be great if we could share this as a hobby.

If you folks have any advice I would be happy to hear it.

Cheers!

As far as role-play as aside to roll-play. I think 4e is able to handle both well. It all mostly depends upon the group. The skill challenge system discussed in the DMG (make sure to look up the erata) is a good new little convention that has come about with 4e. It still uses rolling but it does encourage role play. Many of the ol' school RPers didn't see it as much of a difference from what they were already doing but a lot of the younger gamers are eating it up.

The mechanics/rules can be a bit to take in but what game isn't this way when it's all thrust upon ya all at once. I'd suggest starting with a lvl 1 character and only looking at that stuff. Maybe up 2 or 3 lvls to see what direction you might want to go but for the most part it would only server to make things appear too complicated. Many of the combat rules in 4e have been simplified from what 3e had. Running a couple combats and doing a bit of a step by step should help as far as getting to know most of the combat rules.

A few of the heroic tier adventures have been seen as a bit difficult. Especially the Keep on the Shadowfell. There are a few fights in there that most say are brutal. It's suggested to run that kobold adventure in the back of the DMG first before sending them off to that adventure at the keep.

If you are lfg then I'd suggest going to something like www.meetup.com/. Type in D&D 4.0, your country and ZIP code and you should be able to find a group near you. There should also be other sites you could go to but I can't think of them now. There should also be a place on these boards that serve the same purpose as meetup.com but I can't ever find that part of the boards after the forum remodeling. maybe someone else will point it out.

Your local college is bound to have someone there that plays.  Look around student lounges and such for students playing trading card games (or you may catch them actually playing RPGs).
