| #1EscherEnigmaJan 11, 2011 19:36:10 | So yeah, I'm with Vash10887, in that I need more practice. And seeing as I'm done with school but not yet in my (hopefully) exciting new career that sucks out all the time I previously had for hobbies, I figure I'm just a slacker if I don't take the opportunity to get some practice. Alas, I'm not quite so ambitious as to have a queue. So only one free character portrait for the moment, first person that posts with an idea. Then we'll see how long I drag my feet on that. So... who has a character they want illustrated? |
| #2homicidal_squirrelJan 11, 2011 20:33:26 | I'll take a crack at it. Human Thief wearing leather. I always imagined him wearing the Gnomish workman's leather armor from the old 2E arms and equipment guide... human sized of course. Carries many knives/daggers... many. |
| #3pigknightJan 11, 2011 21:06:18 | A pig knight. Preferably a paladin or dark knight. |
| #4Robin_HoodlumJan 12, 2011 7:26:20 | An elf, with short brown hair. He is also a Cleric/Priest type, but does not worship "nature" gods. His gods are his ancestors, and his purpose is to protect his people. He wears a long, grey-blue cape that reaches his ankles, with no hood; a hard leather breastplate and greaves; a soft leather cap; knee-high boots; his arms are bare; his pants are light grey. At his belt are a short sword and dagger. Slung over his back is his bow, created from a rare and strong wood. He is an old RoleMaster PC of mine... |
| #5ADHadhJan 12, 2011 7:38:10 | A pig knight. Damn, I'm fresh out. All I have are lady pig barbarians and warlocks. |
| #6jetshieldJan 12, 2011 8:27:13 | Maybe something unusual will get your creative juices flowing. Female kobold dragonrider. Wears a flightsuit (fairly tight fitting to avoid getting pummeled by flapping leather) made from the skin of a giant chameleon. Weapons are shortspear and 2 daggers. When working magic she holds a crystal shard (a milky red color) the length of her forearm in her left hand. The dragon is also female (smaller, more rounded scales - finer bone structure - built more for speed than bulk [think falcon instead of eagle]). Primarily crimson, shading to indigo on the belly. Four horns on her crest. When she has her scales painted (a common passtime for good dragons), she prefers landscapes of mountain scenes, although she's willing to accept other work if the artist is particularly skilled. She'll allow a light saddle for the comfort of her rider, but prefers to fly without one. |
| #7jesse.two.coinsJan 12, 2011 8:36:38 | Maybe something unusual will get your creative juices flowing. wow ![]() |
| #8jetshieldJan 12, 2011 8:51:36 | Heh. I guess I'm technically cheating, because that's really 2 characters in one portrait. The kobold is my newest, and the dragon is another player. But the two are life-bonded, so, in a strange way, they're like one being. We've still got a couple details to work out (like names....I'm really bad at names), but they'll be getting played very shortly. |
| #9iqwinnJan 12, 2011 10:46:50 | Artificer/Wizard hybrid, with a Swordmage MC. Human male, stands at about 6'6". Favors wearing blue, grey, and tan/khaki. Wears a broad-brimmed hat of blue felt, grey leather boots, blue slacks, white shirt and a tan jacket. Brown hair, blue eyes with glasses, squarish frames. His swordmage implement/weapon is a drow long knife. Long fingers with slender pinkies. Has a small tome in a pouch on his hip (tome of readiness) as well as a knapsack on his back which holds his spellbook and other items. He also has a bandoleer of vials, holding alchemical weapons. |
| #10EscherEnigmaJan 12, 2011 13:03:24 | ... Heh. What part of "not quite so ambitious as to have a queue" was unclear? Either way, started on some sketches of the rogue in leather. Bit of a sparse description (and the only description of "gnomish leather" only really indicated excessive amounts of pockets) but I might have something up later in the week. |
| #11homicidal_squirrelJan 12, 2011 13:08:31 | I thought I'd give you the freedom to draw him as you saw fit. I guess for a bit more of a description I'd say I play him as an Indiana Jones type rogue (not into hats, but if you want to add one in I'm not opposed to it). Motivated by the adventure, not the treasure. I usually think of him as clean shaven and with short hair, but it's up to you how you envision him. |
| #12Mad_JackJan 12, 2011 13:12:33 | Can I get a sketch of the character "π"? ![]() |
| #13jetshieldJan 12, 2011 13:13:43 | There was nothing unclear about "not quite so ambitious as to have a queue". However the "for the moment" part might have created hope that, once you got started, you would be tempted to continue. Besides, you never know what ideas might stick with you and give you inspiration for a character of your own sometime down the road. I can't speak for anyone else, but I knew before I posted that it was a very long shot in the dark that you (or some other person with any artistic tallent who might read this thread) might decide a kobold dragonrider would be fun. |
| #14toastedamphibianJan 12, 2011 17:29:27 | A kobold dragon rider in a skin tight skin suit with a giant red ****. Sounds dangerous. |
| #15jetshieldJan 12, 2011 17:37:49 | I believe Freud might like to have a word or two with you. No doubt he'll blame it on your mother. That was pretty much his answer for everything. ![]() |
| #16toastedamphibianJan 12, 2011 17:47:59 | I believe Freud might like to have a word or two with you. No doubt he'll blame it on your mother. That was pretty much his answer for everything. Hey, its not my fault your characters make me think of lesbian-interspecies-reptilian-S&M. Okay mabey it is. |
| #17jetshieldJan 12, 2011 19:05:36 | I must be getting old. I have an unsettling feeling that as little as 15 or 20 years ago I would have considered that possible interpretation. Maybe not... |
| #18EscherEnigmaJan 13, 2011 2:26:10 | Gonna work on it more tomorrow, but here's a WIP, homicidal_squirrel: |
| #19homicidal_squirrelJan 13, 2011 6:26:16 | Looks good so far. |
| #20jetshieldJan 13, 2011 10:37:11 |
I didn't mean to draw one of your own characters. Picture it: It's a dark and stormy night. Your character lies bloody and mangled deep in the darkest pit you'd ever seen. Unrecoverable and unresurectable, here is the final resting place. You have no choice. You must create a new one, but every idea is fatally flawed in some way. Dozens of ideas come to you, and all are rejected. In desperation, your mind casts about for inspiration. There, in a dark corner of your mind, you come accross this thread amidst a pile of other trivial things that have been tossed asside, but not forgotten entirely. It hits you like a thunderbolt! Your next character will be...an elven darkknight dragonrider who wears blue and grey gnomish leather armor and has a flying pig pet. Unlikely? Sure. But that's what I meant by "inspiration for a character of your own". I could happen. It could. Really. To H_S: Is this the armor you were referring to? |

| #22EscherEnigmaJan 16, 2011 23:18:48 | Another WIP. [link] I think I have the eyes placed a little high, and I've never been good at drawing hairlines. And that armor... yeah... sorry, but I don't do detail-wank. Especially when it's overkill like that... |
| #23homicidal_squirrelJan 16, 2011 23:43:10 | I know the Gnome armor seems a bit excessive with the pockets and belts. I always imagined it as a toned down version with a lot less pockets all over the place and most of them as secret pockets that are not visible. As for WIP... very cool. I like the buckles. I have a thing for pockets and buckles. |
| #24EscherEnigmaJan 16, 2011 23:54:00 | Re: Buckles If there's anything I learned about armor and buckles in my few months of going out and beating up my friends with padded sticks while wearing funny suits (also known as "SCA fighter practice") it's that all those pieces of armor have way too many buckles and that's why you put on your gloves last. Because if you don't then someone helping you with your armor goes from "nice" to "necessary". Also learned that the New Mexico chapter of the SCA decided that stiff leather wasn't enough to protect the neck, and so every SCA-legal gorget in New Mexico is either entirely made of metal or has a metal plate. That's what that plate on the neck is supposed to be. |
| #25homicidal_squirrelJan 17, 2011 0:36:54 | Interesting. I thought it was for aesthetics. It looks pretty cool. Even better now that I know it is also functional. |
| #26boraxeJan 17, 2011 11:48:32 | Re: Buckles If there's anything I learned about D&D is that it has sod all to do with reality. ;) Nice work BTW. |

+1 ![]() This is esp true when they draw females of any class, but esp fighters, who wear skimpy bikini armor that exposes their bellies. As sexy as that is, it just screams, "Please eviscerate me!" |
| #28zombie_babiesJan 18, 2011 8:59:33 | Not here! This isn't Astrid's! ![]() In all seriousness, the 'magic did it' explanation works fine for me where skimpy armor is concerned. That belly gap? That's your +2 right there. Meh, it comes down to the rule of cool. If ya like it, it works. And if ya don't, someone else probably does so it still works. ![]() |
