I have a plethora of good game concepts. One of the simplest starts out as a text based game which could incorporate simple animations. I've, of course, have many many upgrades in mind, but I need your help.

Can you tell me of a program that would allow me to create a game such as this, allow other players to face off on it, and either be played as a smart phone app, or as a facebook game. I'd even be willing to start my own website for it. If you can start me n a program like that that I could learn I'd appreciate it, and make any special mentions of you that you want in the credits.

So do I, buddy, so do I.
You may try Game Maker for starters. It should be good enough.
Just remember to focus and have lots of self-motivation. I do not posses those virtues

You may also like to contact some independent game-makers communities, such as TiG Source. Just beawre their initial harshness - they're used to quality indie games.

I have a friend that uses game maker and he said he couldn't make it into an app, online game, or mmo. It's a file that you have to download and play off your own computer. I'm looking to make an areana style game similar, but way more innovative than the War games applications you find on face book.

Thanks, I really appreciate your input.

It's better to start small at first. GM should also give you a good idea what does actual pro coding look like and how to think like a programmer. That's the hardest part, I only scratched the surface myself.
For actual programming... C++, .NET, Flash and Java should be your best calls.

If you want text based with simple animations web-based MMO style, I'd consider Flash if I were you. That would allow you to hook it into Facebook and Flash is fairly easy and has the options for MMO support (kinda)

You could also try Java. Runescape was built in it.

Basically the exact choice of language depends on what exactly you want to do... but, as a game developer myself, I think it's only fair if I tell you that when you take on a project like this on your own, you're going to spend the first 2 or 3 months programming things that have absolutely nothing to with the game just to teach yourself how programming works, because it's difficult and tedious.

Thanks for the info guys! I've done some programming in the past for undergrad classes, so I know it's a slow, soul sucking process. The worst was when it would work on my comp, but not the teachers and I got an abysmal grade on the program. That was basic and Vbasic, nothing like C++. I'll look into Java for sure. If you guys keep up with me then when the time comes, who knows when, I'll be putting o0ut a line for beta testers.

I found the program that kid used to make his million dollar game! It's here www.anscamobile.com/corona/ . The problem for me though is that it requires a Mac and I've got Win, of course. I am not deterred, I shall press on! It did give me a flash of inspiration though ;).
