| #1retrokythApr 08, 2013 23:40:30 | Hello All, First poster here from a long time D&D fan. I've been watching Game Of Thrones and thinking about what all of the characters would be in the old school 9 choices of D&D Alignments (Law - Chaos and Evil - Good axises); so my friend and I made a video about it: Retromancers Head Games ep.1 - Game of Thrones D&D Dungeons & Dragons Alignments (Season 3 Start) . I'm really curious what this community has to say about our choices (since of course there is a ton of room for interpretation) - so if your a fan of GoT as well please check it out and let us know. Just keep in mind that it's only based on the TV show up to season 3 start. Thanks everyone, hope you find it interesting. |
| #2The_SilverswordApr 08, 2013 23:47:27 | No one 'round here reads that crap. we're all Wheel of Time fans. On that note Rand al'Thor: NG Mat Cauthon: CG Perrin Aybara: LG Egwene al'Vere: LN Nynaeve al'Meara:LC |
| #3retrokythApr 08, 2013 23:49:34 | Haha I see. I think I had the first few books...came out around the late 80's right? |
| #4The_SilverswordApr 08, 2013 23:54:43 | Late 80's early 90's, round there yeah. Last book was actually pretty good, wrapped up alot, but not everything, still got an air of mystery to it. Now that ive finished perhaps I'll read these GoT books everyone keeps goin on about, got to be better than Twilight right? |
| #5retrokythApr 09, 2013 0:02:20 | I haven't read the GoT books yet, but I'm reasonably sure they must be better than Twilight ;) |
| #6ADHadhApr 09, 2013 1:23:43 | Late 80's early 90's, round there yeah. They're okay. I was kinda disappointed at first that it teases with supernatural and later it's almost exclusively political, but it's well written and reads easily. I've read only the first two though. |
| #7draco1119Apr 09, 2013 1:46:41 | It gets more supernatural. ![]() Also: Ned Stark is Lawful Stupid. Joffrey is Chaotic Stupid. |
| #8zombie_babiesApr 09, 2013 8:40:20 | No one 'round here reads that crap. we're all Wheel of Time fans. Lies. Some of us have taste and therefore read neither. |
| #9Ragnar_LodbrokApr 09, 2013 10:53:57 | Joffrey is Chaotic Stupid. More Stupid Evil. So is Cersei. Baelish is definitely NE, Ramsay Snow/Bolton is CE, Stannis is either LN or LS, and so on. |
| #10retrokythApr 09, 2013 11:01:59 | Nice; we had Baelish as NE and Stannis as LN so we agree ;) BTW I tried to just embed the video in my post, and though the preview showed it properly when I posted it just showed up blank - anyone know if this is normal? |
| #11draco1119Apr 09, 2013 11:15:27 | For Onesite, it is. I'm forgetting Baelish is, but I'd actually put Stannis at LE or LN with Evil tendencies. I'd say Jon Snow is LN with Good tendencies. |
| #12Ragnar_LodbrokApr 09, 2013 12:02:22 | Petyr "Littlefinger" Baelish. Yeah, Stannis can easily lean LE, if he doesn't fit perfectly there. Now that I think about it, there are surprisingly few characters that I'd consider fully Chaotic anything. Some, many of them Wildlings, but not that many. |
| #13retrokythApr 09, 2013 12:29:43 | Yeah, we actually had Stannis as LN "in motion" towards LE (thanks to Melisandre's influence). I agree too about the Chaotic statement - I think too often a dash of mental instability confuses people into picking Chaotic for people who clearly aren't (like Joffrey for example). |
| #14draco1119Apr 09, 2013 12:49:38 | Halfman is CN. |
| #15zombie_babiesApr 09, 2013 13:00:52 | What's his other half? ![]() |
| #16pigknightApr 09, 2013 14:33:58 | Tyrion Lannister CG. |
| #17draco1119Apr 09, 2013 15:11:56 | Nope. CN, straight up. |
| #18pigknightApr 09, 2013 15:25:30 | He's too much of a good guy. |
| #19draco1119Apr 09, 2013 16:20:23 | The little sister (the sword fighter) is CG, and headed for CN. Sansa is Neutral or NG. And Tyrion is CN (I'm open to N, though), possibly with Good tendencies. Oh, and Lankhair(?) the priest of the sea god, is CN or N. |
| #20Ragnar_LodbrokApr 09, 2013 17:19:31 | Yeah, we actually had Stannis as LN "in motion" towards LE (thanks to Melisandre's influence). I agree too about the Chaotic statement - I think too often a dash of mental instability confuses people into picking Chaotic for people who clearly aren't (like Joffrey for example). Actually, Joffrey could easily be Chaotic, and if I'm GMing is one of the major influences I'd put in a major Chaotic Evil villain. His actions are principally motivated by his whims, with no actual forethought or planning. The "sentences" he got to pass in the books weren't really based on Westerosi law, they were just him subjecting (mostly fairly petty) criminals to his caprices. Tyrion is one of the few others I'd call Chaotic; not as extreme an example, certainly, but he doesn't really put much stock in the rules of others and (as his final interaction with his father demonstrated) dislikes people trying to control him. I'd put him at Chaotic Neutral leaning Good. As to Aeron Damphair: I'd say Lawful Neutral, honestly. He's very much tied to the rules of his religion, which his words suggest is a rather Lawful one, like most (if not all) in the series. EDIT: Figured out how I'd define Jaime Lannister. Includes spoilers from A Storm of Swords, which the show hasn't reached yet. Show He definitely starts off as Neutral Evil. Very much a self-absorbed prck who has no issue with trying to kill a kid just because he thought it would benefit him. The only people he actually cared about other than himself were his siblings (I don't remember if he even had a scene with Tywin in the first book, so I don't know if he really registered to Jaime.) After his imprisonment and the loss of his hand, however, he starts a very impressive shift of alignment, being very much LN by the current point in the series. At this rate, he may eventually hit LG. |
| #21draco1119Apr 09, 2013 18:05:43 | Damphair I classified the way I did because he follows the law of the sea... Which really isn't lawful, and is often considered to be chaotic. Maybe we should compromise and leave it at N. |

| #23retrokythApr 09, 2013 18:18:17 | Very interesting discussion. Ragnar I think we actually may have predicted what you said about Jamie, which I'm happy about ;) If you guys want check out the video for the characters we're debating (you can jump to characters from the menu), and feel free to comment there as well...it's currently looking pretty sparse! |
| #24homicidal_squirrelApr 09, 2013 18:56:11 | Le sigh... D&D alignments were never really well thought out. Martin's characters aren't any alignment in particular. They tend to be a mixture of several alignments depending on the situation. |
| #25homicidal_squirrelApr 09, 2013 18:58:13 | No one 'round here reads that crap. we're all Wheel of Time fans. Lies. You can't read. |
| #26retrokythApr 09, 2013 19:11:32 |
I'm the guy on the left. As far as the books: since both of us had only seen the show we figured it would be cool to do a "base" one based on Season 1 and 2 - and then maybe do follow ups so we can illustrate how alignments might evolve over time. Also, it'd probably be fun for people who have read the books to see if whether our predictions are correct or horribly wrong, lol. |
| #27homicidal_squirrelApr 09, 2013 19:14:30 | I'm the guy on the left. Get a haircut, you damn commie hippie! ![]() As far as the books: since both of us had only seen the show we figured it would be cool to do a "base" one based on Season 1 and 2 - and then maybe do follow ups so we can illustrate how alignments might evolve over time. | #28retrokythApr 09, 2013 19:20:33 | Lol, that's nothing - my hair used to be Sephiroth long ;) And as far as horribly wrong...I dunno - based on the comments above it seems like we were on target for almost everyone discussed. |
| #29homicidal_squirrelApr 09, 2013 19:25:56 | Lol, that's nothing - my hair used to be Sephiroth long ;) That's not making you sound any better. Yes, but what you fail to understand is that they are really stupid. |
| #30retrokythApr 09, 2013 19:28:40 | I have no reason to trust your assessment over theirs ;) |
| #31homicidal_squirrelApr 09, 2013 19:32:32 | That's exactly what a communist hippie would say. ![]() |

| #33draco1119Apr 09, 2013 20:02:32 | Or maybe he's intelligent enough to take the word of a dragon, a Viking, and a sword over that of a rodent. ![]() |

| #36retrokythApr 09, 2013 20:17:31 | Welcoming bunch here I see ;) |
| #37Hipster_DogApr 09, 2013 20:19:12 | Welcoming bunch here I see ;) This is nothing. Now get off my lawn. |

| #42Ragnar_LodbrokApr 09, 2013 23:22:19 | And as far as horribly wrong...I dunno - based on the comments above it seems like we were on target for almost everyone discussed. No. It just isn't well written, and, while it's better than leaves, the paper it's printed on is inferior to toilet paper for the best remaining use. However, it's much better than the Sword of Truth. |
| #43The_SilverswordApr 09, 2013 23:33:31 | Well I thought they were written pretty well, Jordan could really paint write a scene. I also like how he never just came out and told you anything, you had to figure stuff out on your own. But whatever, its not everyones cup of tea. Never read Sword of Truth, hell dont think Ive even heard of it. The name kinda remains me of an Elven NPC in a game I ran awhile back, I cant remeber his name now but it translated into Truthblade. I know everyone loves stories about D&D characters, especially NPCs!! But Ive been told we're not allowed to talk about D&D here so Im gonna cut myself off right there. |
| #44Ragnar_LodbrokApr 09, 2013 23:49:21 | Never read Sword of Truth, hell dont think Ive even heard of it. Good. |
| #45ADHadhApr 10, 2013 6:45:42 | Never read Sword of Truth, hell dont think Ive even heard of it. The TV series was entertaining. |
| #46SadClownIsSadApr 10, 2013 7:41:54 | The Mord-Sith were entertaining |
| #47KlirshonApr 10, 2013 7:42:54 | @ADHadh: Regardless of the quality of the television series (of which I have not watched, and therefore I am unable to validate a claim attributed to its quality), Terry Goodkind is a hack. |
| #48ADHadhApr 11, 2013 5:35:42 | @ADHadh: I've seen quotes from his books on these very forums and yes, I would not read that. But the series was like something from the 90s, only made now. |
