#1 grinsplitter_dup Mar 31, 2009 21:50:21	Some of the stranger superstitions that my group has had for many years: If you see a hearse on your way to the game, you are likely doomed. If you forget your character sheet, you are certainly doomed. If you see a hearse, and forget your character sheet, go home immediately. Do you or your groups suffer any weird supersitions like this? Personally, I change d20's a lot because they hate me, and I can't quite get my head around the idea that dice are random, and I just KNOW that somewhere in my dice bag is the one die that has absorbed all the luck from the others.

#5 faurieth Apr 01, 2009 2:12:10	One of my Group's players, he'll uses a different dice every time he has to make a roll, and never the same dice twice. Ever. During a single session anyway. He has like three pounds worth of dice, and carried two bags: One to carry them to the game, the other to leave with all the used ones so he knows which ones are separated.

#8 EscherEnigma Apr 01, 2009 12:20:39	Hrm... one of my GMs had a d12 that he called his 'John killer dice' because on two separate occasions it rolled max damage against myself and another player also named John. Thereafter whenever he wanted to threaten the players he would say "I'm pulling out my John-Killer dice..." My SO has a few pounds of dice, and whenever someone isn't rolling well he'll sort through it, examining different ones, and then eventually choose one and say 'try this one!' Oddly enough, he doesn't have a superstition about other people using his dice, but believes he can find the 'lucky' one in his bag. When I was GMing my last 3.x game the entire group had the superstition I was out to kill their characters. Myself, I have no superstitions. I don't care if I'm using someone elses dice, my own, whether the dice has been rolling 20s or 1s. And whenever someone at the table engages in superstitious behavior I just kind of wryly half-smile at them and shake my head a little. I think having a cynic present just encourages them.

I also keep my dice sets separate from one another when on the table, but thats more of a quasi OCD/boredom thing. I had a player friend who went to sleep holding his dice bag close ON PURPOSE. After sleeping with his dice, that session he rolled nonstop 16 or above. Thems dice were happy. Or so creeped out they were willing to do anything.
#10 dirtyfrank Apr 01, 2009 16:55:27	One of my players always has to roll his dice up against my DM screen or the back of my laptop. He thinks it gives him great rolls. He tends to always get a great amount of successes but that may have to do with his character being built very well.
#11 baneofelves Apr 01, 2009 17:32:09	I like to roll my dice before the game and find the dud ones, then I trade it to another player for an equal sided dice that is working poorly for them. We then roll nothing but high numbers. :D Works every time, too.

One guy has a d20 he refers to as the 'Billy Beru' and he even says 'ooooh billy billy billy.....this..is a BIG one. He keeps it in an aladdin's castle felt token bag, like its own little dice bag.

I used to have to have all my dice with high number up, too. Not for luck, but because it literally bothered me not to. Now I don't have to. It took some discomfort to get there, but now I'm actually more comfortable about my dice. Cuz I don't get irritated if they ain't just so. ;)
#19 dirtyfrank Apr 02, 2009 10:39:40	I'll sometimes group up my dice such as put all d20s together and all d10s together but not for any kind of imaginary luck. I do it because it sometimes bugs me to have to search for the dice I want especially since I tons of dice and other junk, as DM, that I have to keep track of.
#20 zocchihedron_dup Apr 02, 2009 13:31:24	I carry a lucky d10 with me everywhere I go. My friend bought it for me a few years ago when we were just browsing a hobby shop. The clerk dropped the dice and lost it down a crack in the floor tile. So she gave me a new one. We came back in a few days later and the clerk had found the one she dropped; she gave it to me for free. I keep it in my pocket at all times so I know where it is.

But it's hard to shake off some funny ideas when they seem to run true for a long time. -- In my Monday night group, if you roll the dice on the table, it's going to suck. Roll them on a book or something, and you're OK. Weirdly enough, it seems to be true far more than not. -- My RPGA Warlord, in the seven times I've played him, has always taken big damage in the first encounter or two - it's not that he sticks out or I charge ahead or that his defenses are low or anything, it just happens. After that, he's pretty much OK, or at least no more hurt than the others. -- I do have one die (the one given away on PHB release day!) which either runs hot or cold; either it rolls multiple crits in a single encounter or it gets multiple 1s. These streaks generally run about an encounter and a half, then either return to normal or swing the other way. -- There is one guy in my Friday night group who, when I GM, never tell him what he needs to roll any more. He rolls unusually well in general, but if you give him a specific target number, he will hit it almost every time, no matter how unlikely. As far as anyone can tell, it's honest dice and honest rolling, it's just a weird lucky or semi-psychic thing.

I won't repeat it here because it made me want to throw things at him.

Basically one of the players in a former group was looking through his dice and found a dice that belonged to his ex-wife. he was about to throw it away when i said that i would take it if he dident want it... it rolls A LOT of 1s. but sometimes, a 20 will show up. the rest of the numbers dont show up all that often. i suspect that some one might of tried to load it but failed. anyways im always very hesitent to use it. Also never face a dire weasle in 3.5 alone. my players easly dispatched a hydra and the pali went off alone to look at the loot in another room. while the players where talking a weasle jumped out the pile and attacked the greedy player. what happend was weasle would attack then grapple. palui would shake it off on his turn. this happened for like 10 rounds before the pali called for help when he was at just a few hp left. by the party got there and easly dispatched the weasle he was in the negitives. it was hilarious as the weasle couldent roll lower than a 15 and i dont think the pali ever rolled over that much.

We are actually lucky he didn't burn the house down. Me? No superstitions. Unless you count the fact that I kiss my dice before a really important roll.

There have been many screw around threads such as (controversial statement), word association, five word game and such that allowed for a lot of quick responses. I really got most of them, probably the last 8 to 9 thousand, in the last 4 to 5 months. Basically since the ban on religion and politics.
#56 p5ych0k1n3515_dup Apr 03, 2009 1:02:38	I have a few; 1) Never lose a dice. If you do, scour everywhere until you can find it. Failing to find said dice, buy two more of the type you lost. 2) Keep different dice in different bags. Keeping a d4 with a d10, and other variants, spells rub-off. Nothing worse then a d10 that won't roll higher then 4. 3) Never try to copy Famous Characters, such as Drizz't. Your Character will always be far worse then the original, and suck so hard you'll be left with an unplayable Character. Borrow or imitate to a degree, just be cautious. 4) Never say "I'm going to crush/kill/beat/whip/destroy/defeat/reign/outsmart/outmaneuver/outclass/other variants", when facing a large pool of enemies or the BBGE. You will lose in one fashion or another. And lose spectacularly.
