| #1jetshieldAug 09, 2011 0:13:28 | Without doing any research, answer the following question. (note: this is just kind of a personal study for my own curiosity) Does glass flow at normal room temperatures? |
| #2pigknightAug 09, 2011 0:15:11 | Short answer: No. |
| #3EscherEnigmaAug 09, 2011 0:18:02 | The scientist in me answers... Sure. I don't have the state equations for typical window glass handy, but I'm sure you can solve for a liquid state while keeping temperature at somewhere around 20 celsius. |
| #4dirtyfrankAug 09, 2011 1:08:48 | If I remember correctly glass flow thing is a myth. IIRC part of that myth came from stuff like church windows where it is thicker on bottom and thin on top. Thing is most church windows are huge and need to last a long time and if it wasn't thicker on bottom they wouldn't last long at all. I do believe that glass does warp over time but I do not think that it is considered a flow. |
| #5The_SilverswordAug 09, 2011 5:55:32 | With out doing any research? Thats not fair!! Well Ive heard that it does, and its actually classiflied as a super cooled liquid and not a solid. Ive heard this anyway, but not sure I believe it. I have seen old buildings with old windows and the glass did not look bigger on the bottom or anything. And my trusty glass pipe is still in the exact same shape its always been, and ive had it for years and years, so Im going with.... No er I mean yes! No! Maybe? |
| #6Robin_HoodlumAug 09, 2011 6:20:12 | Deleted my first post because I was wrong. But here... www.glassnotes.com/WindowPanes.html |
| #7ellorinAug 09, 2011 7:07:10 | That was a quite interesting link RH. |
| #8bone_nagaAug 09, 2011 7:58:59 | Glass can flow when under pressure from a detonation (there is an accompanying increase in temperature, but in a shaped charge the glass or metal will actually flow before it has time to react to the temperature based on the massive pressure alone). |
| #9dirtyfrankAug 09, 2011 8:28:28 | With out doing any research? Thats not fair!! Actually I believe glass is an amorphous solid. Glass can flow when under pressure from a detonation (there is an accompanying increase in temperature, but in a shaped charge the glass or metal will actually flow before it has time to react to the temperature based on the massive pressure alone). I think the question had more to do if it would flow under normal standard conditions. Under certain conditions most things can be made to do nonstandard and unintuitive things.
technically anything can be defined by flow and for all solids it would be absurdly slow. Scientists would call this not flowing. Just as how diamonds are spontaneously combusting but we don't say they are exploding. |
| #10dirtyfrankAug 09, 2011 9:33:14 | Diamond is not the favorable form for carbon. Diamonds do not last for ever. They are always reacting with their environment in a forward reaction. However, this reaction is very very very slow. It is however the favorable reaction and it is considered a combustion reaction IIRC since I believe it is a reaction with oxygen. Combustion and explosion are usually seen as synonymous however diamonds are doing one but not the other. |
| #11jetshieldAug 09, 2011 9:44:17 | A little explaination: I had a group of friends and relatives over last night and somehow the topic came up. The first I heard of it was one of the adults telling thier kid that glass is actually a liquid and flowed very slowly. He used the example of the windows in his grandmother's house (the kid's great grandmother), and pointed out the ripples, explaining that they were the result of the glass flowing down to eventually make a puddle. Being a contentious lot by nature, this, quite naturally, let to a full-scale debate. Lines were drawn in the sand, and both sides were completely convinced they were right. It was entertaining to watch...for about half an hour. In any event, I was a bit surprised who was on which side of the debate. I expected the more highly educated to be on the correct side far more often than they were. It was wierd. Naturally, I made sure the kid(s) got the correct information before they left. edit: Link to the one source I found that everyone there could agree must know the truth, mostly because it's close enough that almost everyone has visited it at least once (how proximity equals correct, I have no clue). |
| #12mudbunnyAug 09, 2011 10:05:05 | Glass is not a l iquid, it is, as mentioned above, an amorphous solid. It does not flow. The reason why old windows are thicker at one end than another is due to the techniques that were used to make windows then. |
| #13SomeoneAug 09, 2011 12:28:46 | Yeah, a lot of what you are seeing is a result of the manufacturing process that was used- if glass flowed at a perceptible rate, then giant optical telescopes ( the ones with ten foot+ mirrors) wouldn't be possible. |
| #14jetshieldAug 09, 2011 15:57:23 | The point behind this thread was to see if the OTTers would, likewise, be split. Interestingly, I asked the same question at work and all but one of my co-workers said glass does indeed flow under normal conditions. |
| #15bone_nagaAug 09, 2011 18:12:19 | Glass can flow when under pressure from a detonation (there is an accompanying increase in temperature, but in a shaped charge the glass or metal will actually flow before it has time to react to the temperature based on the massive pressure alone). Oh I'm aware of all of that, I was just having a little fun. |
| #16dirtyfrankAug 09, 2011 19:32:42 | understood since fun is fun. |
| #17pigknightAug 09, 2011 20:18:54 | The point behind this thread was to see if the OTTers would, likewise, be split. Interestingly, I asked the same question at work and all but one of my co-workers said glass does indeed flow under normal conditions. Obviously were are more intelligent than your coworkers. |
| #18The_SilverswordAug 09, 2011 22:59:18 | A little explaination: Something like this happened to me awhile back, it was the weekend, there was a large group of us gathered together and somehow the topic of how many states there are in the United States came up, this lead to a big argument, now the up thing about this is that the main argument was whether there was 52 or 53 states! One side was saying 52 the other 53, I was the only person out of 25 or so people that thought there was 50 states, can you believe that? People would show up randomly during this and as soon as they came in Id be like tell these idiots how many states there are, and with out fail they would say either 52 or 53 lol, not sure why 51 wasnt in there. At the time we had this American flag hanging up in place of curtains, and I even told them to count the damn stars, of course that didnt work, I was told that it was an OLD flag lol. I did remind them that us territories such as Guam dont count, they all said they knew that, were talking about stats here! One girl went so far as to tell me that shes in college so she would know that theres 52 states, duh! Yeah, I hang out with some real winners, but they do make me look really smart by comparison.Actually maybe I shouldnt of posted all this, maybe I shoulda just posted the question How Many US States are there? and see what everybody else said lol. |
| #19homicidal_squirrelAug 10, 2011 0:15:13 |
63. You forgot to add the stripes ![]() |
| #20dirtyfrankAug 10, 2011 1:05:29 | Something like this happened to me awhile back, it was the weekend, there was a large group of us gathered together and somehow the topic of how many states there are in the United States came up, this lead to a big argument, now the um wow. if they weren't counting US territories how were they getting the extra 2-3 states? Did any of them bother to google a listing of states and read them off one-by-one because that should only take no more than 5 minutes to do? man people are disappointing these days. ![]() |
| #21KlirshonAug 10, 2011 1:23:00 | I am uncertain as well. Even with the incorrect inclusion of Washington D.C. as a state would conclude 51 presumed states of the USA. You should have suggested that they name the states. Of course that might not work with your group either... |
| #22The_SilverswordAug 10, 2011 2:24:57 | Yeah I dont know where they came up with 52 and 53, maybe they was thinking that Southern California was its own state, and theres New Mexico, so it stands to reason that old Mexico is a state too? One guy even called information (411) and asked the operator how many there were then got mad when she hung up on him. hahahaha I ended up pulling out a map of the US and made them count the states. My friends cant count either!! The ones who thought there was 53 counted 53 states and the 52 ones counted 52. What we ended up doing is making a list of all the states in alphabetical order and then numbered it, and wouldnt you know it, theres 50 of em!!! They were still certain that I tricked them somehow though lol |
| #23QubeAug 10, 2011 4:33:21 | Depends by what you mean by flow. and glass |
| #24ADHadhAug 10, 2011 5:06:49 | Well, to be fair, I wouldn't be able to tell how many voivodeships Poland has either. And there's only, let me google this... 16 of them. But I always sucked at geography. Then again I know there are 50 United States... |
| #25EscherEnigmaAug 10, 2011 8:32:33 | ... am I the only one thinking back to elementary school when they made us learn that song "50 nifty United States and thirteen original colonies"? I'm pretty sure I can get most of the names by memory too (in alphabetical order). Edit: [Here's the song]. |
| #26zombie_babiesAug 10, 2011 9:08:26 | Obviously were are more intelligent than your coworkers. Yeah, obviously. ![]() Ok, I need to get more maturer. The fact that people think glass flows when it's solid cuz some old glass has manufacturing defects or that there's more than 50 states can still make me angry. Like, actually angry at their stupidity. I don't have time for dumb and I don't think the world does, either. I shouldn' be this way ... ![]() 52 states is actually sorta explainable, too. Factor in dumb and DC plus Puerto Rico and you get 52. Then again, that's assuming someone that dumb knows about DC and Puerto Rico. Grr. Oh yeah, how many states did Obama say there were, again? Maybe they just listen to the president too much. ![]() |
| #27zombie_babiesAug 10, 2011 9:20:34 | *sigh* I have friends that think HARP really does control the weather and that certain 9/11 evidence was planted. Yeah. Overall they're smart, though. It's ... painful. I do firmly believe that we will soon be overrun by radioactive zombies, though - and it'll start in Cali. See, there's a ton of bodies out there from the tsunami. On land and in the sea. There's also a major radiation issue. On land and in the sea. So zombies. They're walkin' across the ocean floor right now. May even be zombifyin' sharks an' whales an' giant squid, too. But yeah, they're totally real an' totally comin'. And it seems I have yet another SyFy Original to write. Maybe I can get Debbie Gibson and Traci Lords to be in it ... |
| #28EscherEnigmaAug 10, 2011 9:26:33 | Good thing I'm not on the coast then. Hrm... I wonder... how well do you think a zombie would take Death Valley? |
| #29zombie_babiesAug 10, 2011 9:28:53 | They'd probably evolve fairly quickly. The next stage in zombievolution is skeleton. All that heat, I imagine they'd rot to bones fairly quickly. |
| #30jetshieldAug 10, 2011 9:29:26 | Death Valley sounds like a zombie vacation spot. |
| #31zombie_babiesAug 10, 2011 9:45:10 | Dood, they'd zombify all the predators and bugs. These are radioactive zombies that have zombified sharks, whales and giant squid already. And they don't 'die' when their flesh rots all the way off. They become skeletons. Radioactive skeletons. Er, if the radioactiveness didn't give them some sort of set of zombie super powers - like rot resistance or SPF100. |
| #32zombie_babiesAug 10, 2011 10:01:52 | Skeletons do not. And absurd? Dood, it's friggin' radioactive! By definition no trait gained via radioactive exposure can ever be absurd! |
| #33dirtyfrankAug 10, 2011 11:33:54 | Yeah I dont know where they came up with 52 and 53, maybe they was thinking that Southern California was its own state, and theres New Mexico, so it stands to reason that old Mexico is a state too? Here is my theory on it. They all think that there are 50 states on the mainland and that Hawaii and Alaska make 51 and 52. some probably think dc is a state so that's where you get 53. Skeletons do not. And absurd? Dood, it's friggin' radioactive! By definition no trait gained via radioactive exposure can ever be absurd! oh they're absurd alright. absurdly awesome! |
| #34jetshieldAug 10, 2011 11:34:28 | Would they rot and become skeletons, or would they dry out enough to become zombie-jerky (AKA Mummies)? I mean, since they're radioactive, they'd just zombify all the bacteria that would ordinarily cause rot, right? |
| #35zombie_babiesAug 10, 2011 11:50:13 | Here is my theory on it. They all think that there are 50 states on the mainland and that Hawaii and Alaska make 51 and 52. some probably think dc is a state so that's where you get 53. That's actually a pretty sound theory. oh they're absurd alright. absurdly awesome! Damn you and your good points! ![]() Would they rot and become skeletons, or would they dry out enough to become zombie-jerky (AKA Mummies)? I mean, since they're radioactive, they'd just zombify all the bacteria that would ordinarily cause rot, right? You know, I was gonna answer this but I think I've revealed enough of my script to you punks for one day, thankyouverymuch. ![]() |
| #36dirtyfrankAug 10, 2011 12:07:00 | Obviously the zombies with SPF100 due to the radioactivity wont rot so they'd mummify. However, those that don't would rot and those with the radioactivity improving their motor skills and that hold them bones together would become skeletons. Once the zombie invasion is over and they're integrated into society do you think that zombies would face a similar glass ceiling that women do? |
| #37bone_nagaAug 10, 2011 14:48:13 | Obviously the zombies with SPF100 due to the radioactivity wont rot so they'd mummify. However, those that don't would rot and those with the radioactivity improving their motor skills and that hold them bones together would become skeletons. ![]() |

However, those that don't would rot and those with the radioactivity improving their motor skills and that hold them bones together would become skeletons. Nah, it'll probably be more along the lines of '50s nonwhite Americans. But worse. |
| #39pigknightAug 10, 2011 22:38:58 | There are 50.5 states. Let's be honest, Puerto Rico is basically a state. |
| #40The_SilverswordAug 10, 2011 23:42:18 | Here is my theory on it. They all think that there are 50 states on the mainland and that Hawaii and Alaska make 51 and 52. some probably think dc is a state so that's where you get 53. |
| #41The_SilverswordAug 10, 2011 23:48:21 | There are 50.5 states. Let's be honest, Puerto Rico is basically a state. Ive heard that we tried to get them to become a state, but they said "hell no!!" Ive heard that anyway, not sure if theres any truth to it. Im not reall sure about Puerto Rico, are they considered US citizens? Can the vote for who will be the US prez? Could some one born in Puerto Rico be president of the united states? About the only thing I do know is they make some pretty good rum. Anyway enough of the states talk, lets get back to the impending zombie horde! Ahhhhh I love the Tavern!!! |
| #42dirtyfrankAug 11, 2011 8:38:52 | US territories are well US territory. People born in US soil/territory is a US citizen. They can run for president as long as they've meet the other requirements. Also IIRC US territories have representatives in congress but they are non-voting members. I could be wrong on that but I do for certain know DC is like this. |
| #43zombie_babiesAug 11, 2011 9:12:29 | Facebook sucks. Don't bother. I would kill my profile but I have two friends that have businesses and stuff gets posted about those there so I'm there to support 'em. Umm ... yeah, if that made any sense. |
| #44homicidal_squirrelAug 11, 2011 11:00:35 | Facebook sucks. Don't bother. You should be charging them for allowing them to advertise on your facebook page. |
| #45zombie_babiesAug 11, 2011 11:44:15 | Nah, I'm sorta monetarily compensated by both. |
| #46CCSAug 11, 2011 12:49:25 | yes. |
| #47homicidal_squirrelAug 11, 2011 14:50:27 | Nah, I'm sorta monetarily compensated by both. We've alraxy been modded for that kind of talk. |
| #48zombie_babiesAug 11, 2011 15:31:37 | No comment. ![]() |
| #49The_SilverswordAug 11, 2011 23:54:34 | So I shouldnt join facebook? OK so im going to!! Actually, my mind doesnt work that way, if someone tells me I HAVE to try something, I ussually go out of my way not to try that thing, but if someone tells me dont even bother with that then im like ok i wont. maybe im just lazy? |
| #50zombie_babiesAug 12, 2011 8:22:18 | Lazy is goo |
| #51pluisjenAug 12, 2011 10:03:12 | It certainly does suck. I have one for work and I make it a point to never add someone unless it's work-related and to never post anything on it, just test the games and that's it. And even then some people get butt-hurt that this farce of a spambook isn't connected to them so I can be their 362th friend. |
| #52zombie_babiesAug 12, 2011 10:05:44 | Yeah, all it's good for is anxiety. Like, you see the birthday crap pop up and all of your friends wishing this other friend a happy birthday and you don't want to cuz it's lame and stupid but you do. You do because you just know there's a shot it'll cause real drama if you don't. I hate that ****. |
| #53dirtyfrankAug 12, 2011 10:16:02 | There are two things I use facebook for. Games (but haven't played them much lately) and parties via the event thingy. I don't use it really to talk with anybody. Seems odd to talk to people I know by using the internet. *shivers* |
