GUNS N' F****ING ROSES PEOPLE!

You mean Axl Rose and Band.
#31

Armisael

Mar 13, 2009 6:40:00
No, he means Guns 'n Roses. See, there's two similar bands: one of them is named Guns 'N Roses and produced albums like Appetite for Destruction and Use Your Illusion, and the other one is named G'n'R and created Chinese Democracy, a very different, yet very good album. They're two different groups.

Now, on some good stuff...

A) The Kinks. Get Arthur, it's unbelievable.

B) David Bowie. Ziggy Stardust is one of the best albums ever, and the title track's just unbelievable.

C) Meat Loaf. While he's THE guy to call if you need someone to say DID SOMEBODY ORDER...A LARGE HAM?, his album Bat Out Of Hell rocks really hard.

D) Frank Zappa. Hot Rats and Chunga's Revenge are made of comedic win.

E) Jethro Tull. Especiall Thick As A Brick or Aqualung, as the first one is how to make a 40-minute track that doesn't suck.

F) Kraftwerk. They launched a whole genre, and you owe them a listen.

G) U2. Ignore the studio albums, but do yourself a favor and get Rattle and Hum. It's up there with Live After Death and Live At Leeds for best live album, and the studio tracks are incredibly powerful pieces of music.

H) The Who. Tommy and Who's Next are mandatory, and Who Are You and Quadrophenia are little jewels in Rock and Roll's crown. Not to mention Live at Leeds, which won them the title of best Live band ever.

I) B. B. King. He's not just a blues legend, he IS Blues.

J) Chuck Berry. He created Rock 'n Roll. 'Nuff said.

K) Velvet Revolver. At least, get Fall To Pieces. It'll make you cry, because it's Slash pulling a riff that is absolutely sweet.

L) Extreme. The name says it all. Nuno Bettencourt shreds fast and HARD.

M) Ayreon. I'm a total sucker for Ayreon, but Arjen Anthony Lucassen's extremely varied approach to music is incredible. Just listen to Amazing Flight (Yes, that's funk, folk, and space rock. Play that funky music white boy!), then My House On Mars, and then Chaos/Dawn of a Million Souls, and realize it's the same guy helming those vocalists (he sings the "Hey dude, you're so uncool..." chorus on the first song). The mind boggles at such diversity.

i dont intend to be argumentive, but in death metal, grindcore, hardcore, black metal - there is a huge level of vocal talent that is talent. its just a different style then what you prefer.

to be able to tour show after show, if you dont actually know what youre doing as a singer - you can wreck your voice.

of my list i just posted, id recommend pedro the lion and fugazi - theyre amazing and excellent and actually sing - not growl

Actually, nothing on Minja's list is even regular old heavy metal. None of them remotely approach death metal. There's some industrial, ol' school idustrial and some rock from what I can gather. Death metal is like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Deicide, Napalm Death (my god, am I showing my age? :D), etc.

I can rap better than .5 cent Remember with modern rap it doesn't even have to follow a beat, nor rhyme.

Besides I've screamed at something for more than half an hour straight before. Death Metal can't be that hard.

Really? Wow... I feel for you.

I listen to just about everything but country, and I will give most music a try at least once. Lucky for me my dad had a huge CD collection that started when he as a college DJ. He has some REALLY obscure stuff.

But anyway as I listed them, in genre...

Industrial (techno dance music with a metal edge)

Nine Inch Nails
Ministry
KMFDM
My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult

...you could also add...

Butthole Surfers
Skinny Puppy
Rammstein

I could dance all night to Ministry's "Jesus Built My Hotrod", or KMFDM's "Juke Joint Jezebel", or Butthole Surfers "Who Was in My Room Lastnight".

Punk Girls (girl bands, and angry girls at that)

The Muffs
Velocity Girl
Zuzu's Petals
L7 (kinda)

Punk Boys

Dead Milkmen
Dropkick Murphys (revered in Boston)

...I also LOVE The Pixies...(boys and girls band)

Alternative

The Jesus and Mary Chain

No death metal here.... not really my thing....

I am OFFENDED, sir, by you NOT knowing about the Murphies. Just listen to the sweet awesome of I'm Shipping Up To Boston and go buy all of their catalogue.

Also, Earth Wind and Fire and James Brown. How did we miss these again? Listening to the funky Shooting Star, then Get Up (I feel like being a) Sex Machine Pt. 1. 'Cause you can NEVER have enough funk.

Also, Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine. It's lounge versions of rock 'n metal. How could you NOT like it?

You need some country and blues.
Kris Kristofferson (at least listen to Sunday Morning Coming Down)
Johnny Cash (saw this one coming didn't you? God's Gonna Cut You Down )
Blues Traveler The Mountains Win Again
Pete Seeger The Big Muddy (Admittedly he's more folk than country/blues)

A couple punk bands you need to know
Iggy Pop The Passenger (I'll bet you already knew Iggy and the Stooges, though)
Patti Smith Break It Up (Patti Smith is known as the "god mother of punk"

Then there's typical artists (which I won't check to see if they are named);
The Clash (punk)
Ramones (punk)
Dead Kennedys (punk)
Cheap Trick (American rock n' roll)
Creedance Clearwater Revival (American rock n' roll)
Cream (Try Tales of Brave Ulysses)
Elvis Costello and the Attractions Watch Your Step

I'll agree Johnny Cash is overrated. He is however, a rock n' roller as true as Keith Richards (okay, maybe not on the level of Keith, that man is a drug fueled lich). Cash had an influence on rock near as big as any other artist, and he indirectly helped birth heavy metal ("The Man in Black", he invented that image. He also influenced blues, the style of music that gave birth to bands like Black Sabbath and The Rolling Stones)

And I hate country. So whiny. I just dislike that style of music as a whole.

As opposed to "Cut the world open! Pain is barbwire life!" death metal?
There is alot of awful country music, I'll give you that. But some of the best song writers, ever, write country (Kris Kristofferson and Johnny Cash come to mind).

Toadies--dark humor, clever lyrics, solid rock grooves.

They Might Be Giants--I'm getting shot down for this one, probably, but if loving TMBG is wrong, I don't wanna be right.

Kate Bush--you want a vocalist? Here you go. Go ahead, deny that "Lord of the Reedy River" gave you a chill the first time you heard it. Liar.

Steely Dan--these guys are a great band: they have awesome jazz-rock melodies, clever lyrics, tons of irony, good instrumentation and composition, and they're both decent singers.

Van Morrison--he's mainly blues/rock, but he incorporates Welsh and Irish melodies, too. He's also a great lyricist. Astral Weeks is probably one of the best albums ever made.

Brian Setzer Orchestra--as far as rock goes, when it comes to arranging a piece, Brian Setzer is the best act in town. Not to mention that he plays a killer guitar.

Primus--how come no one has mentioned Primus? These guys are hard to classify; some of their stuff is alternative, some rock, some metal. But they have great instruments, and some of their songs are hysterical.

Jethro Tull--I've heard most of their work, and I don't think they ever had a bad album. Some of their stuff is a little heavy as far as subject matter, especially Aqualung and A Passion Play, but they're an awesome band. They're a rock band, but they use unconventional instrumentation, and the subjects they write about are all over the map--everything from the fairies to the plight of the common laborer.

I dunno what you think of the various electronic genres but I highly recommend:

-VNV Nation: This is probably my #1 Band of all time.
llusion by VNV Nation: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pu-8wGbWMro (Not all their music is so heavy (in terms of content), but this is a very good piece of theirs)

My favourites are still missing, so here some recommendations from me:

Since you like Nightwish, some bands in the same vein you might or might not like:

Within Temptation
Evanescence
Epica
Krypteria
After Forever
Ephemeral
Xandria
Aesma Daeva

If you like Darkwave (and for ambience, you should):
Arcana
Dargaard
Mortiis (only the first album)
Ice Ages (with a colder, more industrial edge to it)

And my all-time favourite (along Nightwish) is Devil Doll (there are two bands with that name. I mean the ones who made The Girl Who Was... Death). Pure Lovecraftian genius.

Abba

I had almost lost my hope with this thread.

Other than ABBA, I recommend to listen to classical music. It's not really what you might be used to, but it is really good. And, it is far more varied than thought.

True. Let me recommend Brahms, Bartok and Russian composers such as Tchaikowsky. Refreshing to those jaded by the always same Mozart-Bach-Beethoven-Vivaldi routine (not to imply them being bad, but you get bored of them after some time).

I was getting to them. I was going to put them down once I remembered they existed, which is likely when I hear them on the radio.

bane here is some of Primus' great stuff.

Tommy The Cat by Primus

My Name Is Mud by Primus

Wynona's Big Brown Beaver by Primus

Jerry Was A Race Car Driver by Primus

As opposed to "Cut the world open! Pain is barbwire life!" death metal?

That's death metal for p******. I don't listen to songs with emo lyrics.

Yeah. THIS is good death metal metal (mixed with prog, just to make sure it's awesome).

Prequel To The Sequel.

Selkies, the endless obsession.

Ants of the Sky, split into two.

Also, I notice a distinct lack of foreign bands. Should I start listing bands whose vocalists' sing in foreign languages?

If you like folk stuff, Bane, how about folk rock? Check out Great Big Sea and Spirit of the West, two Canadian folk rock bands. Home for a Rest by Spirit of the West (and covered by Great Big Sea) is full of win.

You'll have to excuse me,
I'm not at my best.
I've been gone for a month,
I've been drunk since I left.
And these so called vacations
will soon be my death!
I'm so sick from the drink,
I need home for a rest.

Take me home!

I don't get how Bane can like folk while not liking blues, you know. It seems weird, imagining someone who says that he likes Dylan's version of All Along The Watchtower without liking Hendrix's.

Nope.

Funny story though, in high school my principal received a "death threat" letter from an anonymous student. I was pulled out of class and questioned for this because the administration heard I listened to Marilyn Manson.

Yes to Megadeth, maybe to Manson. If you only consider his music, yes, he's good. If you consider all of his showbiz persona, he deserves being lynched.

Also, yet another song, this time one of my all-time favorites. Eiti Leda, by Serú Girán. It's in spanish, so you probably won't be able to make heads or tails of the lyrics, but the musicianship is just breathtaking (and the lyrics are so full of sadness they can bring tears to your eyes if you get what they mean). Here's the studio version, and here's a rather different live version, which is a lot more rockier.

They Might Be Giants--I'm getting shot down for this one, probably, but if loving TMBG is wrong, I don't wanna be right.

One of the first songs to ever get stuck in my head to the point of insanity was Birdhouse in Your Soul. I loved that Tiny Toons Episode where they did the TMBG's videos. It was teh awesome.

Some of my personal favorites...

Heart/Lovemongers - Especially their early work... Some of their stuff from the 70's and very early 80's is awesome.

Blackmore's Night - Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple/Rainbow fame, they do updated versions of a lot of Rennaissance tunes... The original version of "Play Minstrel Play" has a flute solo by Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull

Billy Joel
Kris Kristofferson
Siouxie and The Banshees
Guns'N'Roses
Harry Chapin
Concrete Blonde
Cowboy Junkies
Billy Ray Cyrus
Janis Joplin
Gaelic Storm
Susan McKeown
Greatful Dead
Queen
Ozzy Ozbourne/Black Sabbbath
Simon & Garfunkel
Willy Nelson

Well, since many of the bands on here I've heard about and listen to, I thought I'd recommend some bands that very few people might know about that I personally like:
Abney Park

Collusion

40 Sons and Daughters - Local Hamilton, Ontario (Canada) band.
Deadly Nightshade Botanical Society
Zombina and the Skeletones

Leaves Eyes

Some other bands you may have heard of:

Disturbed
Buckcherry
Cradle of Filth
Eagles of Death Metal - They are not a death metal band by the way.
Lordi - kind of a cheesy metal, but in a fun way.
AC/DC
Beastie Boys
Schubert, specifically Ave Maria
The Animals
Carl Orff - Carmina Burana specifically Fortuna
Gordon Lightfoot - Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Pearl Jam - Specifically, Do the Evolution and their cover of Last Kiss
Louis Armstrong
Richard Cheese and Lounge Against the Machine
Rage Against the Machine

Basically, I have a very wide selection of music I like and listen too.

You mean, his COVER of a Nine Inch Nails song? Yeah. I've heard it. It's good. In fact, I feel both versions portray a different meaning when sung by either artist. Trent Reznor's version is more angsty of course, but you can still hear the sadness in the voice. However, with Johnny Cash's cover, the pain is more readily available because he's wearing it on his face because of his age.

I love how the medium of the message can affect the content of the message.

Here is a short list of some of my faves, covering a lot of genres and not in any particular order:

Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR)
System of a Down (along with Serj's solo stuff, Empty Walls is a great song)
Days of the New ( These guys grew up 30 miles from my house, and are very humble)
Tantric (Used to have Matt Taul on drums formerly of Days of the New)
Bob Seger
The Doors
Pink FLoyd
George Thorogood and the Destroyers (i think I misspelled his name)
Chuck Berry
Johnny Cash (and I believe his attitude was a fore runner of some metal, besides he was a great artist, no matter what genre he was)
Willie Nelson
Hank Williams Sr.
Charlie Daniels
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Beethoven
Mozart
Midnight Syndicate
Staind (older stuff, before 14 shades of grey)
Disturbed
Ozzy Osborne
Black Sabbath (without Ronny James Dio)
Slipknot
Stone Sour
Black Stone Cherry (some are the sons of the Kentucky Headhunters)
Mudvayne
Linkin Park
Eminem
Tupac
Snoop Dogg
Bone Thugs n Harmony
Wierd Al Yankovic
Black Label Society (Zakk Wylde ftw)
Amon Amarth
In Flames
Hatebreed
Behemoth
Cradle of Filth
Walls of Jericho
Opeth
Otep
Suicide Silence
Kittie (an all female metal band, they are smokin' hot)
Pantera (RIP Dimebag Darrell)
John Denver
Marily Manson (the stuff before the album with Personal Jesus)

and the list goes on and on...

Another good band to listen to is Flaw. They are/were a band from Louisville, KY and they have 2 albums out. The first, Through the Eyes, was featured on the Scorpion King as well as XXX (Vin Diesel's). Their 2nd album, Endangered Species, is not as good as the first but it is more mellow.
