Ah, yes. You are referring to the prosti-tots. One of the most favoritest words in my vocab.

Ah yes, the "prosti-tot". This is exactly what negative media reinforcement does after generations of being told the say thing day after day, hour after hour. Personally I'm more ready to blame the parents for not teaching their kids some good moral ethics and not to imitate Brittney Spears, but not being a parent myself I'm sure I'd get blasted for it.

That said... I say round up all the prosti-tots, place them in a white room with a fiberglass divider and put a bunch of 30+ men on the other side. If that doesn't scare them into acting their age, I don't know what will.

Seriously (and I do mean seriously, I'm not being sarcastic, here), is it just me or does every episode of South Park actually have a pretty great moral object lesson in it somewhere? Honestly, I think South Park has more legitimate moral value than most other shows do. I'm not kidding.

What? Others from Finland? Vow!

Anyway, I'm not so sure if those girls have really 'grown up' too fast. They're just trying to get to the fun part of the life* as quickly as possible. That kind of excludes the possibility of having grown up since growing up means understanding that life is not and should not be always fun.

*Think of adulthood with no responsiblities to yourself or the society, you can just have as much fun as you want to as long as you want to.
#27

stealthmarmot

Mar 18, 2009 16:31:39
Well this is the result of girls first realizing adulthood, and starting to see themselves, and starting with the media and the presence of other more developed women, they get serious self esteem issues. These girls dress themselves up because they feel inadequate physically. It is especially awkward because at that age they are several steps into puberty and most of the guys havent started liking girls that way yet, still holding on to childhood. So the boys are not exactly giving the girls the attention they crave when their self esteem is low. But the guys are giving the media chaacters some looks at this point. So feeling unable to compete with models and gorgeous actresses and even sometimes video game women, these girls try to compensate by showing as much of themselves as possible, hoping some looks get put their way.

This awkward stage breeds low self esteem, and without parental or some other counsel, they will end up acting in ways that are truly detrimental to themselves.

This is probably the time when girls need their mothers the most.

They ain't growing up because they is guys. When a guy grows up he becomes man.

My take is that I don't think people need to be dating much at all. At least for quite some time. I never really saw the whole point to dating a person just to date them or to look cool. I also don't see the whole point of needing human contact or needing a relationship to stay sane. To me it seems like the ones picking on the 13 year old who hasn't had a boyfriend yet are a bit superficial.

I was thinking more about all the talk about locking them in with a bunch of men in their 30s, or posting their pictures on 4chan.

I've always found the “Men aren't responsible, we better make girls not send the wrong signals, or else the big, bad men will hurt them”-line of thought immensely childish, and pretty insulting towards men. I can think of a lot of reasons girls shouldn't be going into all that too fast, but shaming them or making them uncomfortable in that way to “scare them into acting their age” really just reminds me of my grandfather (a person I don't consider to have ever grown up).

You do realize that, ya'know, I was joking when I said that? Seriously, is humour that far gone nowadays?

It's not so much the specific joke, more the line of thought behind it.

After a bunch of posters on Astrid's kept using attacks on feminism as really badly veiled attacks on specific posters or general equality, and people kept referring to radical feminists as an explanation/excuse for it, I made the mistake of looking up some anti-feminist movements, to build an argument as to why it should then be acceptable to attack anyone attacking feminism, because of radical anti-feminists. So basically, I spent a big part of yesterday looking at web-pages full of guys cheering whenever a man killed his wife/ex-wife and children, because it apparently showed the world what men had been 'forced' to do by feminism and modern society in general. So that line of thought (if men aren't accommodated enough, they will do horrible things that they aren't responsible for, therefore society should work on men's terms) was in the forefront of my mind. I didn't mean to imply it wasn't a joke, just that it's not as far away from reality as it should be

The sad truth is in our society we do have women with far more self esteem issues than men. Women are more emotional to begin with and thus more susceptible to media exposure that may cause issues. That combined with modern photoshop and makeup make images that are literally impossible to achieve. And that's the "real" pictures, not to mention the digital women of our world.

Then combine that with some increasingly bad role models (Paris Hilton) who attempt to use shock media to try to get attention and ratings, and parents who spend less and less time with their families.

Top all THAT off with the fact that the boys have not started getting the funny feelings as much yet (not their fault puberty starts 2-3 years later) and the girls are all sitting there wondering why they don't get the looks from the guys that are expected. Also peer pressure to be cool, as it seems slutty is now "in".

I feel sorry for parents who have 12-13 year old girls. They really have an uphill battle in convincing them that there is nothing wrong with the way they look.

Actually, the murders tend to happen after the wife leaves them (hence why these extremist groups are heavily anti-divorce).

I'm not sure. I think it's different, but I wouldn't say boys aren't affected. But mostly, I think perhaps girls are being taught to be afraid and responsible, and they worry too much and think they'll be worthless if they aren't perfect. And they fall prey to that whole "if you just look right, act right, and use this product, all your troubles will go away (and if you don't, you suck)"-rhetoric the media use whenever they try to sell something. Boys tend to be given fewer responsibilities ("boys will be boys" and all that) and aren't taught to worry in the same way. But when it finally goes wrong, they're also almost universally less prepared to deal with it, hence why so many of them kill themselves, commit violent crimes, or become the victims of violent crimes.

Men obviously need to learn how to control their emotions. It's not easy, but it's sad when a man kills his ex because she left him. That kind of thing shouldn't happen. But, anything that I say is juswt idealistic rambling that will never happen because of inherent human nature.

There are other complaints about gym classes, of course. For instance, the floor in the showers is cold... and wet. Some parents will do everything to excuse their children, and themselves. Our minister of justice once managed to offend a bunch of them, because she suggested that when under-age kids got arrested at violent demonstrations, the parents had a responsibility (on the other hand, I think she gained a lot of popularity from everyone but the parents of said kids).

For some reason, some people don't get that when your teenage daughter is crying and want to skip school because the nasty gym-teacher forces her to go to class with wet hair, the solution is not to complain to the school, it is to take your daughter far way, perhaps in a canoe or something, to a place where there isn't any showers, or hair products, or even actual toilets, and just keep her there for a week. She'll survive, and it might give her some perspective. But maybe I'm just old-fashioned

Personally, I'd suggest a generation or two of all men receiving a vasectomy at age ten, and having to pass an IQ test to have it reversed by age 18. This should not only put a stop to the rampant population growth mankind is doing absolutely nothing to control, but should also inherently increase the average intellect of each person in the following generation.

Guys rule the world, women rule the kitchen. If something is messed up in the world, thn we have to freaking take responsibility for it whether we like to or not. If something is wrong with dinner, then the blame lays at the feet of the women and they have to accept. Learn how the world works!:P

of course, we tend to spend a lot of time either running or hiding though.

Where I come from, comments like that from the girls would immediately draw widespread ridicule. Just because you're a girl gives you no excuse to behave like a sissy.

"Ooooh, I can't go to class because my hair is wet!!!" Geez. Grow some perspective.

I got no problem with wanting to be hygeinic and presentable and all, but this is school, it's gym class, and it's not going to kill you. It helps that I went to a Catholic school where the girls are raised to be no-nonsense types with downright British-like and very strict nuns.

The oft-cited solution to having wet hair in class is a recommendation to the parents to have it shaved off.

My parents shaved my older sister's head after her hair got too tangled to brush. She's fine.
Funnily enough, my younger sister (who didn't receive the same style of parenting) got into that prosti-tots thing.

Reg06:

Totally agree on that. Nothing like a buzz cut to give some people perspective on what matters in life. Works as well on girls as it does on new army recruits.

As a matter of fact, many girls with more sensible heads often prefer their hair short as it requires less maintenance and is cooler in hot weather - strangely enough, the same reasons many men also prefer their hair short.

I got mine on the 17th. Too bad I've been too busy to read it, though, and probably won't be able to really look at it until Friday. I did read the Sorceror, though and browse through the other classes. My next char will be a Sorceror. They do seem to be a bit more powerful than PHBI stuff, but I want to see the stuff in play first. Typically, damage seems to be higher and the added effects are just cool. I can't wait 'till I get to play one!

You do know that's a myth, right? Long hair doesn't make you hotter in warm weather. I'm a man with waist-length hair and I stay quite comfortable at temperatures that make the shaved head crowd uncomfortable.

Although I am an advocate of anything that keeps me from having to wonder if the girl I'm gawking at is at least old enough to vote. At 36 with a child of my own, I find teenagers dressing like hookers rather distasteful*.

To my happy surprise, I got an email telling me it was on the way on the 16th - and that I saved an additional $2 from their lowest price guarantee on pre-orders. I've found the opposite to be true. My head is much cooler now that I keep my hair short, and landscaping was much more enjoyable with short hair.
Of course, I have fairly thick hair so any amount of length (mid back at my longest) means quite a bit of hair (when I got my hair cut a 2 years ago, the stylist said they'd be able to make 3 wigs for cancer patients from my shoulder length hair).

I'm especially impressed with the Half-Orc. WotC did it right this time (I believe anyway). No longer are Half-Orc's these ugly mothafoo's, who look like they've been smashed together with a pig and then breed with an elephants behind. They look beautiful now. Not in the same way say an Elf or Eladrin would of course, but in their own way they look gorgeous. They really shine through as a race of their own, not just some "-Orc" by product.

Plus, +2/+2 Str/Dex? Absolutely spot on!

I'll have to check 'em out. I've only played one before and I'm not too into 'em. I don't have a Str/Dex concept as of yet, but given proper motivation through cool race-ness, I may develop one to explore it eventually. My next dood is gonna be a Halfling. I wanted to do a Gnome, but the stats work out better as a 'ling. I actually need to take that sort of thing into real consideration because we play RPGA with 4 guys (instead of the 5 it's built for) and we like a challenge. Battles can get hairy, so I need to be as good as possible. Though making him a Human is also something I've considered ... too much to ponder! :D

Not beautiful in the same way one human would compare to another human, understand? Beautiful as in... they look like a race of their own outside of both humanity and orcish blood; they don't look fugly, but their certainly not "beautiful" like an Elf. Compare them to, say a Tiefling. Tiefling are not beautiful creatures (depending on who you ask), but of themselves they carry their own brand of beauty and charisma.

It's no myth. Aside from the thousands of women and men who have experimented with both and found long hair warmer, there's also scientific facts that can be extrapolated to further the theory.

The scalp is one of the most capillary and blood-rich areas of the body. In warm weather, the hair acts as a insulating agent, which prohibits that area from being used as a radiator for body heat. In contrast, a person with short hair will find it much easier to get air circulating to his bare skin and be cooler off that way.

Hair can make you cooler if it's shielding you from the direct rays of the burning sun, but frankly, a hat does that a whole lot better and assuming that the hat breathes, you still get cooler air through your head, too.

I wonder what the cause of all this is however. (I don't belive, like so many others, that media is causing this, necessarily. It could just as easily be a reflection of the changes takeing place as a cause.) The reason it makes older people uncomfortable is clear: It's diffrent, and it conflicts with what they have been taught is acceptable behavior all their life, nuff said. But why is there this cultural drive, over the last generation or two, to decrease the generational period of humans? Is there some enviornmental factor causing humanity as a whole to belive, on a subconscious level, that increasing our population is the best survival strategy?

It isn't a survival strategy, it is marketing trying to expand their range in order to reach the previously untapped market group, the tweens. Their method for reaching this group was to try to sell adulthood to them. Then this marketing attempt mixed with USA's obsessive sexualization of youth in females, which at the same time was selling the image of the loose teenager as an idealized form of beauty(ok maybe not beauty, but I'm not sure of what word I should use there). So the image of a loose teenager was thereby indirectly sold to younger girls, and I think they have just decided to cut out the middleman making it more apparent recently. At least that is my take on it.

Nah, don't worry, Reg06; I may be chained in Asgard, but I have a nice view into the Far Realm from here; they won't show up 'till Ragnarok, at least, and I don't think that'll happen anytime soon... Damn it.

I want to address this from a while back.

Actually long hair can be a boon in hot weather. Sweating is good in hot weather because it cools you down when the wind blows. Even when the wind isn't blowing that hard, sweat is usually a few degrees cooler than the skin next to it. Long hair makes you sweat more, and it captures the sweat. This makes you cooler when the wind blows. It's also not that hard to put your hair into a high ponytail if you don't want sweaty hair on you. I can understand an aversion to sweating, but it does have a biological function. Long hair is also decent at shielding you from the sun.

I have had long hair my whole life, and I'm a redhead, which means that the sun and I don't get along all that well :P, but I've survived plenty of hot days. Summers don't usually get really hot where I live, but we've had our 98 degree days. One year at Warped Tour, I wore my hair down and didn't put on enough sunscreen. It was 98 degrees. I sweated a whole lot, but it kept me pretty cool after I got over being all sweaty. My hair also provided some shielding from the sun and my sunburn wasn't as bad as it should have been.

I think he was referring to the norse religion that you're calling both pagan and dead, even though it does have some adherents.

As to the Mayan apocalypse that everyone seems so fascinated with lately, you do realize that it's not the end of this physical world that's coming, right? It's nothing more than the turning of an age, the passing of a millenium, or the ending of any other extremely large measurement of time. If it spelled the end, how did the universe survive the last time the Mayan calendar rolled over to the beginning again? Considering that this isn't the first time the Mayan calendar has ended, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

It is by definition a pagan religion. And it's less dead and more utterly irrelevant.

Anyway, I'd like to add something. Why is it that nearly every American movie has a romantic subplot crammed in whether it belongs or not?

To paraphrase Ben Croshaw, if we went to an alternate universe where regardless of content every movie had a country line-dancing sequence, we'd think they were insane.

Y'know, I'm actually getting kinda offended right now. I didn't know OTT allowed the insulting of RL religions (I understand that this is tongue-in-cheek, but I still find it offensive).

Look, dude, I'm not trying to be an A-Hole or anything, I'm just screwing around; hell, if some one wants to make fun of Atheism (my "Religion"... or is it "Anti-Religion"? Ah, who cares), as long as the joke's funny, I'll laugh my ass off!

And, to any followers of Norse Neopaganism on this board that were offended:

I wasn't trying to offend you. I apologize if I did. If it's any consolation, because I don't actually worship Odin, there's always that chance that I'll get to go to Helheim when I die. So, yeah.

I concur! There in every action movie, every book... It's freakin' rediculous! Ya' know, just ONCE, I'd like to go to a so-called "Action" movie where the majority of it is, in fact, ACTION!!!!!!!!!

Norse paganism is the name of the original religion though(well name that is used in modern times, I have a feeling they din't really have a name for it when it was in use). Although upon further looking it seems the revival is called Germanic Neopaganism or alternativel Asatru.

And yes I am fully aware that it is simply the end of a time period of a calendar. Hence why I referred to it in my last post as being the end of the calendar not the end of the world. That doesn't mean I can't enjoy saying the world is going to end on internet forums and the like.

That was it. People still follow it, so it ain't dead. It began to resurrect in 20th century (can't recall the year) Scandinavia.

Well then my apologies as I had no intent to offend. It is simply that the norse gods and such have entered to collective unconscience just as many other beings of other polytheistic religions. As such it is hard at times to remember that they were once held in awe and I was unaware that they still were.

It is for a multitude of reasons. It helps force heteronormativity down our throats. It helps diversify the audience that will see the movie(no idea why that works). Also it is tradition at this point I think.

Crossroads Wanderer:

Sweat on bare skin or short hair does a great deal better job of cooling you than the same on long hair. It's the difference between sweating in a cotton shirt and sweating naked. One of those is MUCH cooler.

While hair can serve to shield you from solar radiation and radiative heat, as humans we don't really have need of it since a proper hat does the job much better without sacrificing air circulation around your scalp.

crossroads_wanderer

You get much better circulation with just hair than you do with a hat. I have plenty of experience with this. And actually you do stay cooler sweating in a cotton shirt than naked. The sweat doesn't stick around as well when you sweat naked. My dad worked construction for several years and he will tell you that the guys who wore the shirts with sleeves were much cooler than the guys who wore sleeveless shirts.

EDIT: Even better real-world example. In the desert, people wear long layered robes. According to your logic, it would be highly impractical to do so, and they would be better off going in shorts and a t-shirt. Yet the robes were developed as standard clothing because they keep people cooler than skimpy clothing can.

Cotton will make you cooler. In fact, it makes you too cool because it doesn't pull the moisture from the body.

Cotton is good for everyday use, but not for anything outdoors-related in anywhere that might get too cold.

Marked for demolition, I'm
Just a time bomb, ticking inside,
No hope for the hopeless;
I can see the pieces, all laid out in front of me.

No point even asking why,
Couldn't help, even if you tried.
Step aside, or you might just be
the next contestant to feel the brutality.

Devastation, Obliteration,
all to the point of exacerbation,
no explaining my situation now.
Why does this **** keep happening to me?

I've held on too long, just to let it go now,
Will my inner strength, get me through it somehow?
Defying the curse that has taken hold,
Never surrender, I'll never be overcome.

Too dark for forgiveness, I
Can't seem to do anything right,
When I try to rebuild,
I see my humble shelter
Just fall to the ground again.

Object of an evil eye,
No point to let anyone try.
Take heed, my friend;
Lest you be torn asunder, like all that's become of me.

Decimation, Disintegration,
Beyond the point of imagination,
No explaining my situation.
Why does this **** keep happening to me?

Another time to carry the colors again

To win the honor of coming back home again
No explanation will matter after we begin

My true vocation and now my unfortunate friend
You will discover a war you're unable to win

I'll have you know
That I've become
Indestructible
Determination that is incorruptible
From the other side a terror to behold
Annihilation will be unavoidable
Every broken enemy will know
That their opponent had to be invincible
Take a last look around while you're alive
I'm an indestructible
Master of war

Another reason another cause for me to fight
Another fuse uncovered now for me to light
My dedication to all that I've sworn to protect
I carry out my orders without a regret
My declaration embedded deep under my skin
A permanent reminder of how it began
No hesitation when I am commanded to strike
You need to know that you're in for the fight of your life

You will be shown
How I've become
Indestructible

Marketing does not have the ability to act independently aginst the will of the majority of the populace in its area. If what your selling, or the manner in which you are trying to sell it, is offensive to most, then you wont sell anything, and may face repurcussions. Thus marketing cannot be the root cause, as something caused it to be acceptible enough for them to attempt to make money off it.

Blood gushes from the wound
The cut is wide and deep
Right before I turn around
He falls to his knees

A clear song rings in the blades
When steel meets hardened steel
I hear the sound of wood that breaks
A sword cut through my shield

I drop the shield and grab my axe
A weapon in each fist
The first blow makes the helmet crack
The axe cut to the teeth

I rip the axe from the head
covered in blood and brains
Leave the body lying dead
Ready to strike again

My sword cuts through clothes and skin
Like a hot knife cuts through snow
I smile as the bastard screams
when I twist my sword

Sword in my hand
Axe on my side
Valhall awaits me
Soon I will Die

Sword in my hand
Axe on my side
Valhall awaits me
When I die

Bearskin on my back
Wolfjaw on my head
Valhall awaits me
When I'm dead

I raise my axe above my head
My eyes turned furious rage
Yet more blood will be shed
This is a victorious day!

Blood gushes from the wound
The cut is wide and deep
As I turn around
I fall to my knees

Our helmets shine in the sun
As we near their wall of shields
Some of them turn and run
When they hear our frenzied screams

Draw your swords to strike
Hear the Black Birds cry!
Let them feel your hate!
Show no fear!

Ride them down as they run
Send them to their violent graves,

Dead and wounded lie all around,
See the pain in their eyes
Over the field an eerie sound,
As we hear the ravens' cry
