Harmonicas: nerdy?

Ignore for a second the fact that I am asking this question on the dungeons and dragons forums. My question is: are harmonicas considered 'nerdy.' I am thinking of picking it up but am worried what kind of street cred a harmonica has? Are they geeky, sexy, smexy, meh, ghey, nerdy, teh uber, or godly?

Thanks

People who play harmonicas:
Canadian survivalists/folk artists
Old comedians who wish they where blues musicians
Old blues fans who wish they where comedians

I'll let you draw your own conclusions.

Well when i think of Harminicas i get two thoughts

Comedians
And
Blues music

If you want a geeky instrament look at the recorder... i hate that thing.

I personally like the flute and picallo, but both of those arnt really considered manly.

The harmonica (a.k.a. mouth harp) is not nerdy. It comes closer to nerdy when played by a white guy (just telling the truth), but everyone I know considers it a blues man's instrument.

I am a white guy, to be fair, and I am not a comedian (yet?). I just think it's a cool instrument, and a seemingly easy one. The point of the thread was to make sure the harmonica is NOT nerdy. I am in high school atm, so do you think the other kids would think it odd, nerdy, eccentric, or none of the above? or, less likely, cool? or just plain neutral?

Btw thanks so much for actually commenting

It is different. So yes, you will get harassed for it.

If your high school is like the one I went to, any attempt to better yourself or do anything that is not 100% conformist or cliquey will get you called names, intimidated, or beat up.

Prepps are worse than normal. Atleast you have the outcasts and the goths/emos at other schools you could fit in with. Once a prep decided you where out, they all thought you where out.

I'm not out yet mostly because they don't know about this or that I played WoW for a few years before I quit

For the most part, every instrument is considered nerdy with a few exceptions. Such exceptions include the guitar, bass, and the drums. If you are looking for a manly instrument then you should look into the skin flute. Not a regular flute, those are girly. I'm talking the manly skin flute. It might take some time getting use to playin' it but once you become accustom to it you'll be a champ.

Now a harmonica can be cool but that depends upon how you play it. Playing one with sunglasses might help. Playing one with confidence might help even more. Not screwing up a tune will definitely be beneficial to your street cred. So if you think you can pull it off then go for it.

I think the accordion has successfully drawn such a high nerd rating in the last thirty or so years that nearly every other instrument can now be played without the fear of damaging any fragile egos.

Possible exceptions to this may include the bagpipe, recorder, and kazoo....
I'm really wishing I had some more musically talented friends right now so we could start up a band.

One of my friends was nearly or actually homeless for a few years. He loved to play music, but its too tough carrying around an instrament when you're living in a park or a tweaker house. He started carrying a harmonica with him everywhere he went. In a few years he got pretty damn good. I know a hell of a lot of good musicians, and I don't know any who can do what he does.

Is it nerdy? Maybe. Most of the musicians I know - myself included - are nerds. It has little to do with their favored instrament.

Almost everything I ever dd got me beat up in my school lol. You see, society expects you to behave the way they want you to. They can't exactly force you to do as they do, but they mark you an outcast by beating you up, and making fun of you. It's their way of showing you they don't like you or what you do.

Very pitiful people.

Here's a secret. 95% of all people don't care that you're trying to achieve something, or better yourself, or change your life in a positive way. Most people are losers who can't change their life in positive way, and it's easier for a loser to try and drag you down to their level rather than try ascend to yours.

Do you like the harmonica? Do you find it cool? Do you REALLY wanna learn to play it? If the answer is yes, then do it. When someone tells you something negative for it, tell them to go **** themselves.

It was the same for me when I told my friends I wouldn't try drinking alcohol or smoking. They were being jerks about it, I just turned around and ignored them, never hung out with them again. But who the hell cares? There are 6,5 billion people on this planet. And you have plenty to choose your friends from. Take the best, screw the rest

As for the skin snorkel, studies have found that playing one underwater leads to a higher chance of death, not a lower one. Sorry.

Also if you're fat enough you could have someone teach you how to "roll"

Harmonica is going to get you labeled eccentric in highschool and cool in the real world, especially if you're any good at it by the time you get to the real world.

And regarding the nerdiness of other instruments, drummers are never nerdy UNLESS you can call them percussionists without them batting an eye.

And they do have sharp corners too. Good for lacerating facial nerves. Nothing says nerd rage like severing a facial nerve so a bully forever looks like he had a stroke.
