| #1terronusApr 29, 2009 19:13:45 | Any advice? Not just for me, but for any of the community members that want to go beyond just posting and become aggressive/potentially banned members? Thanks in advance! ![]() |
| #2pigknightApr 29, 2009 19:17:38 | inb4lock |
| #3Mad_JackApr 29, 2009 19:24:43 | Hang out in Astrid's Parlor and General Discussion and take notes on the locked threads.![]() |
| #4ciaranApr 29, 2009 22:42:42 | Post BS that you know people will go after. Carrot on a stick kind of thing. |
| #5dirtyfrankApr 30, 2009 1:05:33 | Call people out. Accuse them of being dishonest. |
| #6baneofelvesApr 30, 2009 1:08:33 | Act like me. Most people think I'm a troll. I think I'm one, too. |
| #7Reg06Apr 30, 2009 1:56:29 | Act like me. Most people think I'm a troll. I don't think you actually know what a troll is (or you're lying about it. Probably both), considering how sad an attempt that was at being trolling. It's like when people try to roleplay, but instead they play 4e, that's how bad you trolled. My tongue is somewhere in the vicinity of my cheek. |
| #8baneofelvesApr 30, 2009 2:00:32 | I don't think you actually know what a troll is (or you're lying about it. Probably both), considering how sad an attempt that was at being trolling. It's like when people try to roleplay, but instead they play 4e, that's how bad you trolled. A troll is a poster that says things specifically to spark an argument and get negative reactions. Also called Griefers in MMO's. I did not troll in this thread, but I have trolled in plenty others. Just ask KillerGM about what I said a few days ago. Also, the bolded section is an EXCELLENT example of trolling. Thank you for giving this fine example for those who aspire to have green skin and weakness vs fire and acid. |
| #9KillerGMApr 30, 2009 2:08:28 | I thought that was just a failed joke, one which you apologized for. It has been my experience that trolls don't apologize. I don't think of you as a troll. I mean, I can if you want me to, but that would involve my ignoring you, and that might make playing in my PbP game difficult. |
| #10baneofelvesApr 30, 2009 2:11:25 | I'm pretty sure that I've thrown that term around back when I was in Astrid's after one of the *ahem* YOU KNOWS accused me of torturing cats because of a immature joke I made, then refused to listen to my explanation, then called me a woman-hater. So I responded with the-word-that-shall-not-be-repeated. And then I ran for my life, and never looked back. So when I said it then, it was intended to deliberately provoke and upset posters there. So that was troll-ish. I think. |
| #11KillerGMApr 30, 2009 2:13:37 | I don't know to what/whom you're referring. But I don't really care. *shrugs* |
| #12baneofelvesApr 30, 2009 2:16:36 | It was like a half a week after I joined up on the forums. It was a while ago. I can't even remember the name of the poster. Zandilar? Zaardnar? Something with a 'Z' |
| #13KillerGMApr 30, 2009 2:17:41 | Like I said. *shrugs* |
| #14baneofelvesApr 30, 2009 2:21:27 | It's also why I have a strong aversion to the Astrid's Parlor section. I realize that it (probably) won't happen again, BUT, I prefer not to play with fire if I don't have to. And I'm sure that there are plenty of other *cough* that will take offense at anything I say or do. |
| #15KillerGMApr 30, 2009 2:22:09 | You're an idiot. ![]() EDIT: That was meant with all goodwill. I don't really think you're an idiot. Just young, I guess. There are people everywhere that will take offense at whatever you say. But if the discussion doesn't interest you enough to give it another shot, then that's fine. To be honest, bane, there are far more effective trolls there than you, and I doubt anyone remembers what you did. |
| #16baneofelvesApr 30, 2009 2:25:57 | I never denied that. But, here's the thing. I pretty much type whatever the **** comes into my head, which is why most of the **** I say makes little to no sense, and at times offends people. And this is the OTT, where most people have thick skins. If I say the wrong thing in Astrids......![]() I peeked around in there a little bit, and it seemed like some of the posters would LOOK for something to take offense at. I don't like dealing with people like that. EDIT: And don't worry about calling me an idiot. Everyone is, in their own way. |
| #17KillerGMApr 30, 2009 2:28:03 | I disagree with the looking to be offended thing. There are lots of sensitive discussions, but that doesn't mean that people who feel strongly about something are looking to be offended. I do think that some come in looking to offend (and create multiple accounts to do so) ... but I haven't seen that from you. ![]() |
| #18dirtyfrankApr 30, 2009 2:31:35 | I peeked around in there a little bit, and it seemed like some of the posters would LOOK for something to take offense at. Those are usually the trolls and they aren't looking for something to be offended by but rather something that they can use as a spring bored for trolling that sounds somewhat legit. Trolls well behave as if they've been offended just to start up an emotional flame war with other posters. |
| #19baneofelvesApr 30, 2009 2:32:21 | Eh, I don't like having to walk on eggshells in social situations. I just say what I think, the opinions of others be damned. BUT, I don't like having to deal with people *****ing about me. Astrid's just seems a bit......how shall I put this? Like a delicate crystal. If you make the wrong sound, or the wrong move, everything comes crashing down around you. I remember seeing Jayne_Cobb really tear Pyromancer999 in there for making a similar mistake. That kind of gave me the signal that it was time to leave for good, before I had to listen to that noise. And I DO have a puppet account, but everyone knows that it's me. I mean, c'mon. How many people around here go declaring themselves the bane of every frakking thing they see? |
| #20KillerGMApr 30, 2009 2:34:25 | *shrugs* |
| #21dirtyfrankApr 30, 2009 2:35:09 | I remember seeing Jayne_Cobb really tear Pyromancer999 in there for making a similar mistake. Quite often J_B seemed to purposely attack people. Such behavior is against the CoC. |
| #22baneofelvesApr 30, 2009 2:38:42 | Well, those are just the things that I can think of ATM. The main reason that I don't go in Astrid's is because I'd probably have to watch what I type. And I hate having to censor myself. A lot of the other things, like seeing people flaming each other all the time didn't help either. I realize that that is the minority, but it's just the impression that's stuck in my mind. |
| #23dirtyfrankApr 30, 2009 2:43:41 | Well, those are just the things that I can think of ATM. The main reason that I don't go in Astrid's is because I'd probably have to watch what I type. And I hate having to censor myself. Censoring ones self is just social common sense. |
| #24baneofelvesApr 30, 2009 2:47:34 | Censoring ones self is just social common sense. I do it all the time. I just don't like it. (there are some exceptions, but in most cases I dislike it) I prefer to be myself, instead of what others want me to be. |
| #25awesome_dudeApr 30, 2009 4:12:32 | Re: OP Say things like, "I believe **** is justifiable when committed in self-defense." |
| #26cherubaddonApr 30, 2009 5:52:56 | Re: OP Hmm. That's not trolling, though - that's being politically contrary (meaning I will, or at least should, defend to the death your right to say it :teach .When you troll, it has to be about something that's entirely personal and unverifiable - bashing games other people play without explanation is a good way of trolling ("4e is like a video game", "3.x is just an example of horrible game design", "V:tM suxxors", and the like; mind you: all of these are sustainable - with arguments. So don't provide any. Instead, put things out there like this, on their own, and accuse everyone attacking them of stupidity/pseudo-intellectualism (works very well)/bad taste, or anything else). |
| #27awesome_dudeApr 30, 2009 5:58:04 | Hmm. That's not trolling, though - that's being politically contrary (meaning I will, or at least should, defend to the death your right to say it :teach I've used that exact phrase before and watched an entire forum blow up. It's a treasure I found back when I was 17. |
| #28cherubaddonApr 30, 2009 6:23:16 | I've used that exact phrase before and watched an entire forum blow up. It's a treasure I found back when I was 17. Huh. Sounds like you were visiting the wrong forums :P . |
| #29awesome_dudeApr 30, 2009 6:31:02 | Alternatively, it counts as trolling. People generally identify as anti-****. The phrase looks decidedly pro-**** even though it isn't. Which means that the dumbasses get angry. What you describe (bashing people) is flaming. Trolling is exactly being politically/ethically contrary. It's about people becoming outraged at your assertions, regardless of their validity. |

| #31s-marrowApr 30, 2009 6:36:44 | Re: OP ...surprisingly, if you really think about it, is this comment even that politically contrary? It's just obviously silly, for one. I mean, unless there was someone in real life who tried to get away with their crimes like this. Ah. Now you've done it. You made me do that thing where I think too much about stupid things. I can actually think of a few situations where you could potentially use **** in self defense. Curse you! Get out of my head! |
| #32awesome_dudeApr 30, 2009 6:41:42 | ...surprisingly, if you really think about it, is this comment even that politically contrary? It's just obviously silly, for one. I mean, unless there was someone in real life who tried to get away with their crimes like this. Raping in self-defense is just about as impossible as things get. But hypothetically, if someone did it, they'd be okay in my book (I mean, we've seen people kill in self-defense, even painfully). |
| #33s-marrowApr 30, 2009 7:16:03 | Hypothetically, I could explain two or three situations where the aforementioned activity would be possible and defensible. I could, but I'm actually quite fond of plausible deniability for all situations I am involved in. But I guess we're getting away from the point of your statement. I have to say that I have found, in general, the people who fall for troll bait to be just as bad. They're really just trolls themselves who pander to public opinion, from where I'm standing. I find it fascinating that people can't seem to realize how ridiculous they are sounding once they sink into anonymity. I'm afraid I'm going to have to attempt this method you have described for the sake of research. When the news reaches you that all reality show fan forums have succumbed to destruction, feel pride in your achievements. |
| #34boj0Apr 30, 2009 7:46:13 | You disgust me |
| #35awesome_dudeApr 30, 2009 8:57:51 | You disgust me So do you. But this has nothing to do with your opinions as much as it does with your existing. |

| #37boj0Apr 30, 2009 10:28:56 | So do you. But this has nothing to do with your opinions as much as it does with your existing. your feeble attempts to bait me are trivial at best Remember kids, trolling is a art ![]() |
| #38awesome_dudeApr 30, 2009 10:42:38 | Remember kids, trolling is a fart Har har. |
| #39stompie5Apr 30, 2009 13:01:17 | Any advice? Not just for me, but for any of the community members that want to go beyond just posting and become aggressive/potentially banned members? Say, "God hates DnD," and list several bogus reasons for your belief. Make sure you act like you really mean it too. |
| #40cherubaddonApr 30, 2009 14:18:38 | Say, "God hates DnD," and list several bogus reasons for your belief. Make sure you act like you really mean it too. Nah, CoC violation = lock. Need to be more subtle - after all, you want other people to get banned. |
| #41Alter_BoyApr 30, 2009 17:09:49 | Don't follow the advice from this comic if you want to be a professional Troll: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2009/4/27/ (Warning: naughty language) |
| #42KillerGMApr 30, 2009 17:14:06 | "A period is a great way to end a sentence! Not a backslash! Don't ever use him! He's a psychopath!"![]() |
| #43terronusApr 30, 2009 18:36:34 | This was a joke thread for my buddy who checks the forums a lot but doesn't post. I figured the progression was lurker > poster > troll, so I made a satirical post. It was also a little bit of helping him know what sorts of things are taboo. Strange, that even the word "troll" (self-referencing and used for lawls) gets some people upset. I think its only against CoC to call someone else one, although... could be wrong. Great replies though ![]() |
| #44zombie_babiesMay 01, 2009 9:25:46 | It's definitely against the CoC to call someone a Troll - 'specially if they are one (cuz thems the ones that'll report ya' for doin' it most often ;)). I've only been warned twice that I can recall here. One was for callin' a troll a troll. I did it creatively - sort of Family Feud-esque, but got no points for style. The second time was for a thread I made here. It was a harmless thing linking to a Youtube vid of a kid that was messed up after he went to the dentist (I'm sure everyone has seen it). I labeled it "Stoner Kid" in jest and that was enough to get the entire thread deleted and me warned. Lame-o. |
| #45ellorinMay 01, 2009 17:33:56 | So, you want to be a troll? A good plastic surgeon, an exceptionally good dental technician and some green paint are essential(unless you're going for a skrag version). Can't help with the regeneration aspect-perhaps you should adopt a die-hard worldview?ever surrender etc. Not even after been hit with a mallet repeatedly. You should open yourself to flaming at all times-a troll is nothing if not flammable. |
| #46awesome_dudeMay 01, 2009 21:01:17 | A common misconception is that internet trolls are weak to flames, which has led many a retard to attempting to **** it off by flaming it. Needless to say, all attempts resulted in the troll being fed and it entering an agitated state. |
| #47orenthesMay 02, 2009 19:11:20 | Check PigKnight's posts and then say sexist things on Astrid's. |
| #48pigknightMay 02, 2009 20:19:21 | Wait a second... ...Hey! |
