I'll save my enthusiasm for when Chinese Democracy occurs in China.

It doesn't matter if they finally release it. Axl Rose has no career at this point and this one album won't be able to live up to the hype that's been building for all the years that he's been working on it. Unless it's a monumental success and outsells the bible, he's a has-been and it's better not to try to recapture his success with this albatross.

Yeah, really, unless this album is the best album ever, people will make fun of him.

A lot of people are going to be losing money though, unless a revolution occurs in China soon.

I'll admit to listening to appetite for destruction.

Oh wait...that was released 21 years ago. I'm safe.

Axl does not Guns N Roses make. Infact he's probably my least favourite of the original band. He's pretty much washed up and needs a reality/ego check, but then he could have used one years ago.

So I saw Body of Lies the other day (pretty good film BTW) and the song on the closing credits was a new Guns 'n Roses song. I didn't really listen to it but it was so bad that I had to leave the cinema immediately.

I liked Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 but I would have been 10-12 when listening to them for the first time and I seem to have this trait where I like (now) any songs that I liked during that time. It is impossible for me to reassess the songs now as an adult. Take for example Right Said Fred. I loved I'm Too Sexy and Deeply Dippy when they came out and I still do. I know that it's wrong and I don't really tell my friends but I can't help myself.

Oh well.

I heard that Axel Rose heard The Fragile (Nine Inch Nails) and then realise that Trent Reznor was making the music that Axel wanted to make and soon after that G&R went kaput. Probably a load of **** but NIN are my favourite band and since it's a compliment to NIN then I am going to choose to believe it anyway =)

Yeah, I had heard that vibe in the latest Entertainment Weekly. Typical article to gloss over the new LP he's releasing. He even wrangled Robin F. (NIN, live member) and was grooming for a new sound back when. Slash was apparently pi$$ed when he started seeing all these DATs and ProTools, etc. everywhere, and that was pretty much it back in the day. No more G n' R.

At that point, I didn't care though, and even back in high school ('91-'95) "Use Your Ills I" & "II" were good, few decent hits, whatever, but it was competing w/ Ministry, NIN, industrial as a whole, some grunge rock (Nirvana, Alice in...), some metal, etc. Slowly was developing my own tastes, ie)deviating from most main stream crap I'd hear on the radio or the parking lots at school, etc.

Then, what, Velvet Revolver (Scott Weiland subbing for Axl)? I liked STP too in school. They were likened to Zepplin (not sound, their arrival/reception) in that many many critics hated them, but judging by their live shows & record sales, well, the public had spoken. Anyway, you'd think the 'H' Revolver was doing together, like Gn'R back in the day, might've been the glue that kept them together, but alas no...2 LPs, and then STP get back together. Drugs are funny like that. Probably a good thing, I'm not for caring.

Weird. To me grunge rock and metal were the mainstream crap I'd hear on the radio.

from a political standpoint, the Chinese version of Communism can't last, on account of the existence of a middle class in China. Democracy, however isn't designed to cope with 1.5 billion people involved in the process.

from a musical standpoint, I don't really care about Guns 'n Roses.

Yeah, it's pretty whacked. Ruthless govt. control of all worker's and humanitarian laws, coupled w/ rudimentary free markets, a massive labor pool, extensive trade networks, yeah...gonna' get ugly quick.

from a musical standpoint, I don't really care about Guns 'n Roses.

Ditto, I gave up on them during the Skin & Bones tour (GnR & Metallica). Basically, James Hettfield got horribly burned on his arm (a guitar playing appendage last time I checked ;) ) by a pyrotechnics accident, so they came out, said, "Sorry, James is real messed up, can't finish the set, we'll make amends, bla bla bla. G'nR will be right out, so sit tight."

Axl got upset like a punk, taking it as a personal sleight, and refused to play, thereby instigating a massive riot. Think this was at a Canadian venue promoting the Black album and probably UYIll II. I can't stand that privledged and pampered rock star crap. That and Gn'R's history of massive whoring, drinking & drugging w/ abandon, and lack of accountability.

Some good songs to be sure give or take, but, whew!, no way to live...

I think I will some have difficulty sending it back in time to myself in the early-to-mid 90's period which you were referencing in the post to which I was responding.

All that **** with Axl's attitude aside, Guns N' Roses sound freaking awesome. It's them who got me into rock.

Chinese Democracy (the song) just rocks. Check their MySpace.
Somehow I feel their new album will get better reviews than Death Magnetic.

Funny how Axl with Bumblefoot sound much better than Slash with Scott Weiland (though I'd still like it more if they called a truce).

Who feels like getting a free can of Dr. Pepper? ;)

Believe it or not, it actually came out.

I'm just after listening it whole for the first time, so let me put up a decent review after it sinks in.

OK, here it is!

First I have to confess that it's GnR that got me into rock music. Second, I didn't believe they would finish "Chinese Democracy" at all. Alas, I was proven wrong. Now, after listening to it for several times I will try to share my impressions.

"Watch my disenchanted face!"

As luck would have it, "Chinese Democracy" was available in a cheap edition series, but unlike some other albums in it, nothing was cut. I have to say the little booklet impressed me, made me accept the rather poor front graphic. The last page features, as usual, a picture by Robert Williams*.
The above quote from the title song deosn't fit at all.

There are 14 songs total, featuring many, many musicians for a rock band. Thus there are many different styles and flavors.

"It's not the same without Slash"

One thing for sure, Axl can control his voice perfectly. In If the world and Street of Dreams he switches between a clean voice and that roughish falsetto we know from the '80 with ease. Maybe Axl doesn't look his best and has weird ideas, but he still can sing the same.
The rest of the band is completely different. The whole album sounds a lot more heavier and darker than anything GnR has made before. There are literal layers of sounds and most compositions need to be listened to several times, each time focusing on a different instrument. The album can and will surprise (I'd swear that Zakk Wylde was playing in background in several songs).
Guitar solos will sure move and enchant, Robin Finck, Bumblefoot and Buckethead did an excellent job. They are varied, usually lower than old stuff by Slash, although you can here a high weep from time to time.

"GnR has ended years ago"

I'm to young to say if the album was worth waiting for, but it was certainly worth buying and loving. Sure, Guns n' Roses have changed almost beyond recognition, but hey, you can't afford to stay the same as 20 years ago unless you're AC/DC or Motörhead.
And free Dr Pepper.

Top list:
- Chinese Democracy
- Better
- Riad n' the Bedouins

Let down:
- Sorry

When the album was released, one of the news channels in Toronto went around asking people on the street what they thought would've happened before Chinese Democracy finally came out, & I think 3 out of 4 people replied, "I thought the Maple Leafs would win the Stanley Cup."

Not sure if that's worse for the Leafs or for G'n'R, but either way, I found it hilarious.:D

I found a pretty good video review of the album, which also talks a bit about what was involved with the production and whatnot:
