For those of you who don't know (which means everyone), I'm in High School; and, in Speech Class, we need to make a speech that uses propaganda, including things like Name-Calling, Glittering Generalities, Testimonials, and other things like that. I kind of wanted to make it D&D-Related, just because I love the game so much, but I'm unsure of what to do (that's pro-D&D, obviously, none of that "D&D=Satan" crap). Any ideas? |
| #2eldritch_lordNov 11, 2008 19:37:22 | Hey, guys and gals! I need your help. Have you noticed the edition wars threads here recently? (I know they're quite subtle and hard to find, so.... ;)) Simply pick a side and go for it. Hell, lots of the edition wars threads are ready-made propaganda right there. Two hours of browsing and voila, enough material for a dozen speeches. |

Tempting, but I'm not sure if spouting incomprehensible babble would get me a good grade :P |
| #4Lord_VentnorNov 11, 2008 19:50:35 | Tempting, but I'm not sure if spouting incomprehensible babble would get me a good grade :P Look up Joseph Goebbels. Guy wrote the book on modern propaganda. Or, alternatively, look over some of the mud that the Obama and McCain campaigns flung at each other over the last few months. Hopefully, that was helpful. ![]() |
| #5fenrir7139Nov 11, 2008 19:56:47 | Look up Joseph Goebbels. Guy wrote the book on modern propaganda. Yeah, I might! Hmmmm... "People who don't play D&D are terrorist-loving socialists!" "D&D will bring change and hope!" |
| #6eldritch_lordNov 11, 2008 20:05:21 | Tempting, but I'm not sure if spouting incomprehensible babble would get me a good grade :P While true, that's not what I'm talking about. Anti-4e --"$th edition" --"It's a video game on paper!" --"It's so anime!" Anti-3e --"It takes a PhD to understand grapple!" --"3e multiclassing is all powergaming, no roleplaying!" --"Any 3e player is just a grognard stuck in the past!" And so on and so forth. |
| #7pigknightNov 11, 2008 20:26:15 | Name calling...have you seen my "Your Stupid" thread? |
| #8fenrir7139Nov 11, 2008 20:52:18 | Name calling...have you seen my "Your Stupid" thread? Yeah, I saw it... but it won't help, because of your bad grammar :P /sarcasm |
| #9pigknightNov 11, 2008 20:58:21 | But if I change it, it won't be funny. :P But seriously though, very simple and silly things such as "You're stupid" invoke reactions that make no sense. 5 Year old: "You're stupid." Teacher: "OH MY F G GOSH*!! HOW F G DARE YOU SAY THAT GOSHDARN* WORD!!!"*Changed to censor. |
| #10fenrir7139Nov 11, 2008 21:05:29 | But if I change it, it won't be funny. :P Lulz; I know what you mean. I'm thinking about just going full-on crazy with it (more so than regular propaganda), and say something like "people who don't play D&D won't be able to vent their frustrations, which will lead to violent outbursts!" :D |
| #11goblin_prideNov 11, 2008 21:28:15 | Propaganda is inherently political, therefore forbidden. Prepare for immediate censure*. *There's always time for lube. |
| #12fenrir7139Nov 11, 2008 21:48:26 | Propaganda is inherently political, therefore forbidden. Prepare for immediate censure*. Is it seriously? I was hoping that, since it was for my class, it wouldn't be... PLEASE, MODS, DO NOT DELETE THIS! I HAVE NO POLITICAL INTENT! ![]() |
| #131_ton_ghostNov 12, 2008 9:34:51 | Unless you have alot of gamers in said class, I would steer way the Hell clear of gaming, D&D specifically, unless you are looking for alienation and derision. Most just won't be able to ID w/ P&P gaming...not in vogue. More along their speeds would probably be something akin to propaganda between 2 competing platform video game systems, notably Sony & Microsoft. Plenty of fuel to work w/ there and I can assure you there are plenty of vidiots in your class that will sit bolt-upright and clue in soon as the words "360", "game of the year", or "rated 'M' for mature" leave your mouth. Trust me, it'll sell itself w/out having to do much research beyond dropping a few bucks on a Game Informer. Ask, in the beginning for, "A show of hands" who owns what platform firstly. If you have one too, bring it in for a visual aid. Use all the bells and whistles you can get as this isn't about substance, prefering propaganda. |
| #14goblin_prideNov 12, 2008 17:13:16 | Is it seriously? I was hoping that, since it was for my class, it wouldn't be... Just jerking your chain, relax. |
| #15Johnathan_VagabondNov 13, 2008 8:26:59 | I don't know if it's as pulemic anymore, but you could always just bring up Dungeons & Dragons itself. That used to start fights nice and easy. |
| #16fenrir7139Nov 13, 2008 16:13:23 | Unless you have alot of gamers in said class, I would steer way the Hell clear of gaming, D&D specifically, unless you are looking for alienation and derision. Most just won't be able to ID w/ P&P gaming...not in vogue. Eh, it's all good; the people in my school know I play; they just don't care. Anyway, I all ready came up with one: THE ORCISH MENACE! It's basically just me making fun of Orcs for their lack of hygeine, grammar, and all-around intelligence. (P.S. I don't mean the O.R.C.s, I mean actual, elf/eladrin-hating Orcs from the MM, lol) |
| #17SavevsDeathNov 16, 2008 8:40:44 | Hey, guys and gals! I need your help. You want the General Discussion boards. Down the hall, first door on the left. make sure you commando roll into the room, and watch out for flying daggers, and for gods sake close the door behind you. we try not to let those guys out. |
| #18the_shamanNov 16, 2008 9:19:19 | Hey, guys and gals! I need your help. Hmm, I would suggest some propaganda from the D&D settings, but I doubt the audience would get it if you start talking about the Eldreth Veluuthra or the Silver Flame. The idea about the competing consoles is better, but still not quite good imo. Now, during the papers and presentations I did on topics I was not very clear about, I did something that many people advise against but that served me ok: I started by checking Wikipedia or a similar broad source (used to be Encarta or Encyclopedia Britannica), then after I got a general idea, went on from there to more specific sources. So if you want, start from the beginnings: the definition of "propaganda" that you want to use. I, personally, consider to be any information that is consciously broadcast (or printed, or otherwise made available to large groups of people) that aims to influence their opinion. It usually aims to appeal to emotion rather than reason, and is naturally biased and misinterprets/bends/omits the facts. Politics is chock full of this, and has always been - even before democracy and the need to win elections, the state needed people to be loyal to their monarch and support it in wars, taxes etc. However, propaganda is not at all limited to politics - technically, everything from advertisement/PR to religious sermons cab be propaganda, especially if they seek to create a certain mood or lead to a certain social effect. So if you want to do a D&D analysis, you could always try to do some propaganda about D&D. If you want to be risky and you think the audience can take it, look up He-who-must-not-be-named (a.k.a Jack Chick) and... heck, just look at anything the guy did, he is about as tolerant towards EVERYONE else as the WBC, and could give Goebbels a run for his money. It's harder imo to find pro-D&D propaganda, but there are quite a few opinion pieces on the interned supporting the hobby. Now, I call them opinion pieces, but can you guess how you could also call them? You can do that too :D Of course, using D&D can be a bit tricky; some teachers really like it when students try to apply the subject matter to phenomena from their daily lives, but some might prefer a more orthodoxal approach such as, say political propagand or advertisement as propaganda (and boy, is there a lot of it). Personally, I say go with whatever you choose, but ask the teacher if it's ok beforehand. It never hurts to test the water before you jump in. |
| #19WebsterNov 16, 2008 20:55:20 | Propaganda is more than just giving a speech. It's designed to motivate people. I'd suggest staying away from D&D as a topic. Go for something that will get attention, something to get the class to cheer for you. "Give me an A for this project", for example. "We all deserve an A, do we not? We all work hard! What say you, fellow classmates? Do I deserve an A? Let me hear you! I don't think the teacher in the back heard you!" Have posters with slogans such as "A+ Material" "And how awesome would it be if we ALL got an A for this project? What say you?! The other classes will be jealous because they know we're the best!" |
| #20Johnathan_VagabondNov 17, 2008 8:48:30 | Propaganda is more than just giving a speech. It's designed to motivate people. Since it's propeganda, don't forget to use baldfaced lies that seem plausible. "Now you all know what the class in room 137 is like. They rarely bathe let alone use deoderant, and yet they get graded just like the rest of us. On 'work' and 'quality'. How can you accurately judge the quality of someone's work, if you can't hold their project without your nose curling away in disgust! And... AND they're barely freshmen. How can a freshmen, with but a fraction of the experience in these Fine American Educational Facilities, hope to match the quality and candor of a full blooded sophmore? But they're graded on the same curve, A through F. We should reserve the A's for the experienced sophmore, leave the rest of the letters for them. After all, are we Americans? Or are we COMMIES!" |
| #21werralNov 17, 2008 9:18:23 | Yes don't forget this key rhetorical point - label those that disagree with you as either Communists or Fascists - regardless of whether this has any bearing on reality or not. "It is clear that cat owners have strong Marxist tendencies: why else would they choose a pet that chants, 'Mao! Mao! Mao!'" |
| #22QubeNov 19, 2008 1:18:01 | well, indeed could check out some of the locked threads. - there was one, of a guy (Goldman, Goodman,... something - I'm bad with names) making the distinction between fighting soldies <-> people playing DnD and watching the war from their basements. (which fell in bad earth, since a number of soldiers play DnD, and also (IIRC) Hasbro has shipped DnD material to Iraq for the soldiers) - or the problem that christian childrens funds (?) rejected the donation from Gencon. |
| #23roxlimnNov 19, 2008 9:03:44 | Make it about meat and espouse the eating of beef over other meats. "Did not Savarin say, 'Tell me what you eat and I will tell you who you are.' Wise words. If you eat chicken, you are yourself, a chicken! If you eat pig, you are yourself a pig! "Are YOU a chicken? Are you yellow? No! Let us cast aside our chicken-eating vices before they get the better of us and turn us all chicken. "Are YOU a pig? I don't think so. Not yet. You have the power to direct your own destiny. Do not allow yourself to turn into a pig from the inside out. Eat beef, and you will be beefy!" |
| #24pigknightNov 19, 2008 18:02:54 | I'm gonna go eat more pork. |
| #25doomsoughtNov 19, 2008 18:17:42 | I suggest you should instead do it on why girls should date gamers. with such things as: They will graduate college, and thus make money. Little competition. When you have fun with them you both remember it, and don't wake up with a ... migraine. You(to the girls) are likely stronger than us and won't get beaten. |
| #26pigknightNov 19, 2008 19:08:02 | Also any real geek knows how to use a "magic greatsword" and takes "weapon focus". |
| #27goblin_prideNov 20, 2008 7:28:28 | - there was one, of a guy (Goldman, Goodman,... something - I'm bad with names) making the distinction between fighting soldies <-> people playing DnD and watching the war from their basements. Michael Goldfarb. And doesn't mention of that person mean this thread has become political? Or is it now subversive? |
| #28newbunkleNov 25, 2008 13:51:52 | If you want to see examples of real propaganda in action, try reading the North Korean news website! (KCNA) Some of the articles are boring, but occasionally you can find some that are a real treat. |
